Good games for lains that runs smoothly (and easily preferably) on linux. Please post which distribution do you used and if you had to install something else to play (wine, for example). I'll start with some that i played. >Mount and Blade: Warband I've played on manjaro and ubuntu, both runs really well and didn't crashed even once. >S.T.A.L.K.E.R:SoC Another one that i played on manjaro, idk if it runs well with ubuntu, but probably does. >Dusk Tried with Ubuntu, it runs well, except that the game crashed once and i didn't know why, so i can't say if it's my computer or compatibility error (i used steam's Proton for this one).

It's been a while since I've messed with Wine manually, most of the things from Steam work automagically now. >F.E.A.R. 2 The first game I've finished on Linux from start to finish (on debian). Only DoF effect when aiming down the sights didn't work. >DOOM 2016 Runs flawlessly on Ultra settings in 120 fps.

Many older Windows games can be run pretty well using Wine, e.g. Diablo II, especially if they used Glide, DirectX 1-7 (DirectDraw, Direct3D), D3D 8.1 and 9, and in such cases you should be able to use one of the two wrappers: >dgVoodoo 2 https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/DgVoodoo_2 http://www.dege.freeweb.hu/ >DDrawCompat https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat For installing games, aid yourself with Lutris, or look up the scripts it uses to install particular games (they are available on the website).

Do you think future games will be more compatible with Linux because more games will be made to run "in the cloud" i.e. on Linux servers?
Nguoi La · 2020-06-19 13:33
>>3237 There's already quite a lot of games that are "compatible" to run on Linux in one way or another. Compatible in quotes because you can mean "native" titles or titles that run with the use of a translation layer. Today, the biggest restriction are those games with abusive anti-cheat demands (ie. Valorant, PUBG, Doom Eternal - when they added Denuvo, only to remove it because it even messed up Windows users). The second biggest hurdle would be the developers that outsource their Linux ports, which would end up making the Linux version lag behind in updates or harder for them to add new features (ie. Dying Light, Dead Cells, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided) Cloud gaming would remove that barrier since there would be no need for anti-cheat on the clients. And we are seeing that with Stadia, releasing certain games on Stadia that would never have come to Linux (ie. ESO, PUBG). I'm still of the mind set that I have plenty of games right now in my backlog that unless some new hot game can really wow me, I'll stick to what I have until I can shrink this list of uncompleted games.
Joey · 2020-06-19 20:13
>>3238 >I'm still of the mind set that I have plenty of games right now in my backlog that unless some new hot game can really wow me, I'll stick to what I have Same here. I hardly ever buy games, and when I do it's always old titles that are on sale or indie early access stuff that has a good community. Can't remember the last time I bought a game at launch, but the only game I can think of that might make me do it is cyberpunk 2077.

William Holtzer · 2020-08-01 18:11

Besides, if you try to keep tech-illiterate people away from GNU/Linux, that just discourages the use of free software and propagates Microsoft's near-monopoly over the desktop OS market. It's also like keeping illiterate people away from books - you might feel like it's a waste since they probably won't use those books to learn to read, but taking the books away will only guarantee that they won't learn to read. What is "Windows cosplayer" even supposed to mean?

I really enjoyed it and got ~70 hours out of it, but I am done with it for now.

I play on pure wine or wine-staging, manually managing prefixes, debian or gentoo usually, some of my experiences: > Melty Blood Actress Again works perfectly, nice fun for a quick rush > Fallout 1 got a full play-through on linux, works perfectly > Fallout New Vegas works great aside from some minor graphical glitches sometimes, blur or bloom stuff or something. and some audio stuttering when huge fights break. the mp3-based music was broken until I removed the gstreamer libav plugin that wine was using for some reason, and now it falls-back to something else and music works perfectly. > Dawn of War: Soul Storm played many multiplayer matches, works perfectly. pretty nice strategy game > Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds works pretty well. had some trouble with the multiplayer, it worked but sometimes randomly disconnected. other players were on windows. don't know if this is a wine-related issue or a windows one or both. > S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Chernobyl an awesome mod for Call of Pripyat, I use the Road-Side Picnic mod-pack. play iron-man mode which makes it a rouge-like where death deletes your saves. makes the game way more enjoyable, scary, and adrenalin-filled. > VA-11 HAL-A good VN, did a full play-through on linux, works perfectly. > Red Alert 2 works pretty well. I only played single player. some rare crashes. > The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion minor problems, but works well in general > Nehrim: At Fate's Edge great mod for Oblivion, also works pretty well. spent a lot of time with this one. > Age of Empires 3 also works pretty well. I don't play it much nowadays.

This is important because wine has regressions all the time and even if your package manager version works for one game, it might not for another. It also has a website where you can download config files/scripts to install various games so you don't have to guess the correct settings and versions, but those are pretty hit or miss in my experience.

For some reason games on my t440p seem to run as poor as (if not worse than) my x220t, despite this machine having a quad core i7 CPU and the x220t having a dual core i5. The t440p uses debian while my x220t runs fedora, so could old packages be the issue? I mean, could that really cause such a big hit to performance? And regardless, the games are installed through steam so shouldn't that mean that dependancies are downloaded on a per-game basis from steam directly? I dunno, it's weird and I feel like I should be getting better performance than this. All I can run reliably is retro-style 2D games, and even that isn't guaranteed. Pic related, Mushihimesama, ran fine on my x220t but is full of slowdown on here.

My Logitech G29 was gathering dust in a corner since I could never get bothered to reboot in a Win10 partition just to play some Assetto Corsa/ProjectCars 2/whatever. I read somewhere that there was a program named Oversteer that could manage logitech wheels, but there were mixed opinions every time it was mentioned. I decided to give it a try and installed it. I plugged the G29 in and nothing happened. Then I just switched the toggle from PS4 to PS3 and in no time it was up and running. All things considered I was done in like 10 seconds. Didn't even have to reboot. On windows I had to spend a few hours finding the right version of Logitech' soykafty software, since every time you uninstall it and install an older build you have to clear a whole bunch of folders and reboot. Different story for the games. Assetto Corsa refused to launch, I had to use proton5-0.10 and install dotnet4.7 with protontricks, which took a while. But now it runs perfectly. It just strutters a bit every time you spawn in a new track since it has to build caches. Even multiplayer just works. CODEX' releases of Project Cars 2 and Assetto Corsa Competizione just work. Just like ETS2, which is native.

Try change Audio driver in Runner options, disable toggles connected to PulseAudio in System options? Lutris does not mess with audio that much. >forces vulkan by default even if your gpu doesn't support it Most modern GPUs support it. Disable it in global settings. Lutris should show you a warning on first launch. It is sometimes hard to tell whether a given GPU with given drivers supports vulkan; for some GPUs support is partial, there are different drivers, different versions of drivers, so lutris does not do that. Is it that hard to toggle one switch once? >rapes all of your monitors if you have multiple when you launch a game >launches on primary always instead of the one where lutris is running >locks you into the monitor game is running on, if you try to switch to another one to do something it starts raping your monitors and prevents you from switching Try submitting PRs if it bothers you, it is probably moderately easy to fix. I have not encountered that though since my second monitor mirrors first one 95% of the time. Multi-monitor setup seems just redundant with a tiling window manager. Maybe guys who develop lutris don't have multi-monitor setups? >I don't understand if I'm doing something wrong or what, but for a tool to make things easier it sure as fuarrrk doesn't seem to do me any favors. It is a neat frontend for wine and other emulators and also a game library organizer. I like it; it is much better than retarded dmenu shell scripts I wrote for substituting the latter. Managing multiple versions of wine is also neat. It works very fine for me.

>>4695 >Most modern GPUs support it. Disable it in global settings. Lutris should show you a warning on first launch. It is sometimes hard to tell whether a given GPU with given drivers supports vulkan; for some GPUs support is partial, there are different drivers, different versions of drivers, so lutris does not do that. Is it that hard to toggle one switch once? the problem is that lutris itself seems to know your GPU does not in fact support vulkan (there is system info tab somewhere in settings, and it clearly said vulkan not supported) yet it still forces it regardless. that's just badly written software
Linda Lee · 2021-04-23 16:27
>>4696 Yeah, that is bad design then, maybe it should provide user an option disable DXVK if vulkan is not available (it can't determine if it is actually supported by GPU, libvulkan might just be missing, which is usually the case https://github.com/lutris/lutris/blob/5637f25c1802c4b26f7868c78ca1877897f21f87/lutris/util/graphics/vkquery.py#L83). You may submit a PR to fix that as well. Add an option to disable DXVK and don't show again here, it is just couple of lines https://github.com/lutris/lutris/blob/5637f25c1802c4b26f7868c78ca1877897f21f87/lutris/util/wine/wine.py#L348

Yamaoto Toshi · 2021-04-24 09:45
>>4699 Some games just hardcode resolution instead of using dimensions of a window. You can't really do anything with it but to redraw contents of a game window to a separate window, I guess.

https://crawl.develz.org/ I've Been playing it since 2014, and i love this game a lot. It's more realistic that what you amy think at first glance. and has a lot of races/Backgrounds/Gods, wich make the playstyle options almost infinite. The race usually defines the difficulty, so, if someone wants to be a real men/women/combat helicopter, you gotta play with Mummy, the hardest race (and my personal favorite)

>>4724 forgot to mention, i sticked with the 0.16.2 version of the game (it's from 2016 i think), bacause in newer releases the devs deleted or nerfed a lot of things and redesigned the UI Also, on this game, you don't even need a mouse connected to your computer, wich is nice.

Would like to try this, but am curious on your opinion between the latest and 0.16.X beyond UI changes. Did the devs "ruin" the game, or would the latest version be worth a try?

Had a lot of fun with Taisei which is an open source Touhou fan game. Not a big 2hu guy myself but i like shoot em ups and it's pretty high quality, plus i finally get why Cirno is an idiot. It's in the void repos and you can even play it in the browser, but it doesn't work for me, not with my autistic privacy settings. taisei-project.org
