Any Runners?

Shadowrun is a tabletop game, like Dungeons and Dragons. A quickstart guide is attached and the summary from Wikipedia is below. >Shadowrun is a science fantasy tabletop role-playing game set in a near-future fictional universe in which cybernetics, magic and fantasy creatures co-exist. It combines genres of cyberpunk, urban fantasy and crime, with occasional elements of conspiracy, horror and detective fiction. From its inception in 1989, Shadowrun has remained among the most popular role-playing games. It has spawned a vast franchise that includes a series of novels, a collectible card game, two miniature-based tabletop wargames, and multiple video games. >The title is taken from the game's main premise – that industrial espionage runs rampant in a near-future setting. A shadowrun – a successful data theft or physical break-in at a rival corporation or organization – is one of the main tools employed by both corporate rivals and underworld figures. Deckers (futuristic hackers) who can tap into an immersive, three-dimensional cyberspace are opposed by rival deckers and lethal, potentially brain-destroying artificial intelligences called "Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics" – "ICE" for short – who are protected by street fighters and/or mercenaries, often with cyborg implants (called cyberware), magicians, and other exotic figures, on such missions as they seek access, physical or remote, to the power structures of rival groups. Magic has also returned to the world after a series of dystopian plagues; dragons who can take human form have returned as well, and are commonly found in high positions of corporate power. Since our word filters are all shadow slang, I thought I'd see if we had any Shadowrun fans. So, any runners? Any opinion on which version is best? Any good game stories? Any advice for running a group? Any thoughts on the video game adaptions?

I don't like Shadowrun but I do play pen-and-paper RPGs.

I really like the Shadowrun Universe and I currently prepare a run for my Housemates. They know nothing about the Universe, some know DnD but thats it. Do you have an idea how to introduce them properly without overwhelming them?

>>2966 Probably the same as any game. Small stand alone scenarios and pre-made character sheets.

>>2957 I love the Shadowrun setting to bits, but the TTRPG system is so god damn bloated I can't enjoy it. I think I played the 3rd edition (or whatever it is that grognards say is "the last good one before things went downhill") I don't know if the system got lighter in later ones. I remember there's a D20 variant but D20 is like kicking dead whales down the beach for anything but D&D (and probably for D&D as well). Dragonfall is one of my favorite RPGs and one of the few games I finished more than once. I enjoyed the main characters, it never gets too trope-y. My only gripes are that it's way too short, and you can't start a punk band with Dietrich.

>>2957 I've only recently started playing Shadowrun after years of being interested in the setting. Finding a decent group online is hard, and I'm not about to join one of those living communities. The system is a lot to wrap your head around, but I don't think there's a way around the crunch; Shadowrun is just that kind of game. However, the books ought to be better written and the license ought to be in the hands of a better company. >>2984 I prefer SR:HK, but all three of the HBS games are great. I can only hope that HBS given another opportunity to return to the Sixth World.

Has anyone played Cyberpunk2020? It intrests me more than Shadowrun.

>>2984 Shadowrun Anarchy came out a few years ago and is a rules light narative foccused system. pdf's are available on the trove under fifth edition.

>>3613 Not him, but I've heard not-nice things about Shadowrun Anarchy. I prefer the crunch of the main ruleset, even if it's stress-inducing at times.

I tried to get into it with some friends around the time 6th edition came out. It didn't work out, the setting seemed fun but the rules were too much of a crunchy mess for anyone to commit on it. Same group is totally fine with the crunch of D&D5e, but Shadowrun 6e seems like it's on an entirely different level of messy.

>>3719 >Shadowrun 6e There's your problem. SR6E is almost universally reviled. You're better off going back to one of the earlier editions.

>>3720 Yeah, I picked up on that when I was looking into it. I tried again with the SR5e rulebook, but that one's a hefty fuarrrker as well and didn't address all the complaints that the group had. I feel like it could have worked out if I had started by introducing them to SR5e instead of picking up the 6e pdf, but by the time I was looking at 5e most of the group had already spent more energy on SR-prep than they were willing and we just ended up going back to D&D5e.

>>3721 >I was looking at 5e most of the group had already spent more energy on SR-prep than they were willing and we just ended up going back to D&D5e. It's definitely not a game for everyone. SR is a crunchy game, borderline simulationist at times. Many houserule or handwave some of the more complex (and nonsensical) rules. I'd try again with your group at a later date, or maybe find another group exclusively for Shadowrun.
