Good VR Games

Hououin Kyouma · 2020-02-24 00:21
Let's have a thread for sharing good VR games Lains. It's hard to find good titles for a relatively new media type I guess. I'm sure there's some really good but more obscure games out there right? Anyway, my recommendations (although likely well known) would be Boneworks, VRChat, SkyrimVR, and Minecraft (with Vivecraft not Microsoft's soykafty version). Bonus points for good multiplayer :)

>>2888 That's me as well. That and I resent the VR experience being controlled by the government to the point that it's just a way to have facebook spy through your very eyes and also to force fat people to exercise. Let me lay down and stop hurting my nose. It should be a helmet, lonely, and I should only move my thumbs. If not then it needs to be full body VR of SOME kind. Like running inside of a ball, like a track ball, with rounded shoes. AC control, rain, body suit that feels touch, etc. But that'd be even more expensive. Right now they're concentrating on graphics and not improved gameplay, also concentrating on making people exercise. Fakebook buying the oculus still has me mad, yes it does indeed. At least they made a cheaper version though, I guess. It was supposed to be a console after all. I've read it's that other one that's better though. I played a cool small android game but then it broke itself in my storage, for no reason. I gave up on VR that day. It was the guy that made the Alien Apartment game. He was making a free game along with that one but it was unfinished AND self destructed. I used to sleep staring at the wife in the apartment one. The other is about the planet ending and there being nothing they can do about it. I don't even remember anything but the name Alien Apartment and the games having not been finished. They make horror games a plenty I'm sure, on google play. They cost money... they also had some platformer similar to a mario game but it REFUSED to play on my android. I don't even like androids as they're dystopian but found a 150 USD one on the ground one day and reformatted it to try out their VR. Reality hacker I found funny. You can make the bedroom look like a drawing. Pretty silly but I enjoyed it. Also, the things like magical caves and volcanoes you can be ridden through like a theme part. I'd often sit there with it paused just staring. One game was where you float around in a city in outer space. I think that might ahve been a roller coaster game but it had a second mode where you can float and stop in any direction you want. The ambient noise tier music went well with that one. I sat on a building watching spaceship-cars float by while staring at stars. But no, I didn't play a single real VR game in my whole life. Yet. If they finish the killjoy Alien Apartment and it's sister game then I'll be all over it. >escaping reality to just be sucked into a Greek tragedy that's not even finished What is my life? Pic related is the self destructing game that had another game being slowly made by some guy. Pretty isn't it? Now you see my taste.

The best VR game is going to a hospital irl dressed as a surgeon and trying to dissect people. Step one is finding one of those wheelie-beds (which are usually left lying around or folded in storage cupboards they don't lock them up or anything). Step two is finding a patient heavily medicated enough to let you wheel them off without complaint. Now you'll probably want to dose them up on some painkillers beforehand (it usually isn't worth the risk to try and scrounge some up from inside the hospital, just buy some from a dealer). Just find a surgery room and check the clipboard by/on the door for the schedule (you might want to do this before finding a patient for obvious reasons). Hopefully there's an opening somewhere and you can just wheel your potato in and go to town. Just make sure get out of there in good time and wear a facemask/cap constantly, act like you're supposed to be there, and no one will have the slightest clue what happened.

I got PSVR this week and have been blown away so far. I had an experience of being lowered deep into the ocean and a great white attacking my cage. It was terrifying. Wip3out and the Battlefront X-Wing game are awesome too. Its best I wait til evening to play as its too light in the daytimes atm. I get a weird sense of unreality after using and coming back into the real. Makes you feel like you are in the Matrix.

They don't exist. VR has had several decades of resurfacing fads to produce some games with actual merit and it has failed abysmally.

>>3276 >half life Not him but if someone is going to make something breakthrough you'd figure it'd not be some awful remake of a title. A title sells automatically just because of it's name. It's not a real new game. with new technology it ought to change the gameplay. Why not change into a new game? People won't buy it is why. So an impasse is there. No motivatioin to make nice things if sheep buy garbage just because of it's name. We're in an age where people are remaking gameboy games and nes games to improve them. They will milk what they made before and change it as slowly as possible to keep milking over time.

>>3277 Wut, how is HL:A a remake? It's a prequel with entirely new gameplay and mechanics as a foundation.
Zero Cool · 2020-07-01 16:55
>>3276 >idk if its actually doing something a regular mouse and keyboard game couldn't I mean people have mod'd it to use mouse and keyboard but the game is designed around research that valve gathered from people using various free tech demos (Youtube: "the lab VR" for example). The game exists to show the industry how to make good VR and as a soft intro to VR for consumers. It's not a hard game like HL1. It's more about exploring and looking at soykaf, using the VR to make you uncomfortable in ways that would be fairly ineffective looking through a screen. For example they make you spend time hanging out with a gross invincible monster that can kill you in one second. They leave lots of really gross corpses all over the place and encourage you to play with them. The dead headcrab ragdolls are deliberately amusing to play with. IMHO alyx will be considered a classic but it will be something of a borefest in the future when people are good at high twitch VR games and the things established in alyx become staples of any VR shooter. Maybe like playing wolf3d is these days.

HL:Alyx was my GOTY. That's not really saying much coming from me because I don't play many new videogames, or really any videogames. Alyx convinced me that VR is the future of AAA gaming, and I expect to be proven right in a decade or two. Flat 3D games will go the way of the 2D game: relegated to the domain of nostalgia baiting independent developers. I'm surprised there are so many people commenting on the price of VR. It's cutting edge technology, and a computer with headset now costs about as much as a computer did in the 80s. If cost is an issue, there are... other ways of acquiring new hardware.

>>3874 >Alyx convinced me that VR is the future of AAA gaming Same here. I'm >>3276 and since I made that post my brother bought one of those valve index headsets, so I got the chance to play with it. Alyx is the best VR game by an incredibly wide margin. Then you have games like boneworks and pavlov fighting for a distant second place. Honerable (?) mention goes to Bethesda's VR ports of Skyrim and FO4 which are so awful out of the box that the $60 price tag is practically fraudulent. But if you get them for $15 from a key site (or pirate them) and install enough mods they can be turned into pretty decent VR games. Sim games are in a class of their own, and tend to work very well in VR, but they're a niche within a niche. The benefit of playing a racing sim in VR vs. on a normal monitor is much more pronounced, and of course VR's unintuitive movement controls aren't an issue for them. Porn games are another well represented niche, if you're into that. Can't comment on the quality because obviously my brother wouldn't appreciate me jacking off in his living room. Otherwise I really don't think it's worth it. There's one truly good game you'll want to spend a lot of time with, and the rest are either relatively deep but mediocre or mechanically fun but shallow (beat saber, superhot, job simulator... imagine buying a Wii to play Wii sports). I guess you could always buy an index to get half life, play it, then flip the headset on eBay. They hold their value pretty well since new systems are badly backordered. >It's cutting edge technology, and a computer with headset now costs about as much as a computer did in the 80s I don't think people are saying the price is unreasonable; I think they're just saying they can't afford it. Are you surprised that most people, even people who like video games, can't justify paying $500-$1000 for an (admittedly really cool) toy? I don't think the price of a sailboat is unreasonable either, for what you're getting, and I wouldn't say someone who bought a sailboat is wasting their money; I'd certainly enjoy using a sailboat if I had access to one, but that doesn't change the fact that I don't have that kind of money and even if I did, there are a lot of other things I'd buy first. I guess a better way to frame this point is that to buy a VR headset your desire to own one has to be proportional to your ability to pay for it, and for many people that isn't the case.

>>3344 >>3844 There's a vast difference between having a job and contributing to society. I'd suggest the former is, for most technical users like us, counterproductive to contributing something of worth to society. Not all of us wish to destroy society, though the majority of us are disillusioned with its current state and hopeless in changing it. Doesn't mean we can't contribute to the few parts we don't consider soykaf. Not all us of can get sufficient assistance to live off of, whether from rich parents or from the government. I'd hazard a guess that most US users on Lainchan can't because of the country's lack of a functional social support system.

>>3270 That's not really true, Boneworks, VRChat, Minecraft, are all examples of some well known great VR games. half life alyx was alright but really just a walking simulator :/ Have you actually ever played VR seriously, or did you just come here to complain about things you don't know anything about?
BloodCat · 2020-11-29 19:37
>>3892 >half life alyx was alright but really just a walking simulator idk if i'd call it a walking simulator. it's easy, sure, but not because the combat system is dumbed down. in fact, it's more nuanced than most conventional FPS games; certainly moreso than hl2. the low difficulty comes mostly from the fact that they never really throw that many enemies at you at once, but even so the segments where you actually fight the combine are way faster paced then what you'd get with a walking simulator. i just wish the game focused on them more, because those were the best parts (yeah, meticulously headshotting zombies does get boring once you've played through a couple times and know where they all spawn). i hope it gets some good mods, because the combat system would easily scale to a faster paced campaign (once you get used to VR movement). actually, the i'd say hl:alyx is more like bioshock than anything else, and its faults have more to do with it not copying bioshock well enough than it not being a good enough FPS. bioshock-style action RPG-lites work better in VR than traditional FPSs do, but they basically just took the combat pacing and environmental storytelling from bioshock, simplified the resource management, and got rid of all the perks/upgrades except those gun upgrade stations you find every once in a while. i don't have any brilliant ideas for how you could make a more faithful bioshock clone work with half life lore, but increasing the variety of collectibles beyond upgrade points (for your gun) and ammo (for your gun) would have been a good start. i really just want a VR version of deus ex...

Maybe a tenth of the people I met in VR chat at most were cool. I'll give you that boneworks has better gameplay than alyx, but they simply couldn't afford to polish it to the same degree. Hopefully HL3 will be VR only, and improve on what they had with Alyx.

I got a oculus quest 2 for $300. It's a shame that facebook is spying on my movements but I wanted to dip my feet in the virtual water before I spend any more on VR. It's also nice to be able to use it without tethering it to a computer. I don't have a deskop yet, but apparently you can connect it with a USB-C cable and use the GPU like you would a oculus rift or vive. If you get one, make sure you figure out Sidequest so you can sideload fun (usually free) games. Here's three games I've been playing: VRChat: $0. Feels like the old days of Garry's Mod, but with more normal people (in a good way) and furries (in a bad way). Most of the people are 13-22 if not younger, so if you're older than that it can be hard to connect to people. But most people are friendly. If you have traveled before or are interested in meeting people from around the world, it's a fun way to have language exchange or meet people from other countries. Otherwise it's just a glimpse of the future and a fun way to make some online friends. Ancient Dungeon: $0 in beta. The most fun conventional game that I've played. It's a "roguelike" where you collect items and kill enemies with your sword and throwing knives. Get it from Sidequest. There's modding via lua and the environment feels great. For the best experience, turn off turning via control stick so you need to turn IRL to move around -- this helps with direction orientation and motion sickness. Beatsaber: ~$22. It's a fun workout but imo not worth the money unless you either have normal person family or friends that are interested in using it, or like rhythm games and moving/dance. It's a great intro to VR for people not used to it. You can use sidequest to get custom songs, otherwise they are pretty expensive.

>>3896 I would say that less a tenth of people IRL are "cool" and fun to hang out with.
Wintermute · 2020-11-29 22:24
>>3896 >I'll give you that boneworks has better gameplay than alyx More ambitious perhaps. I think the gap between that ambition and what they actually achieved was detrimental to the gameplay though, and ultimately made it a worse game. Some of it is polish, sure. Alyx's gun play feels less like you're fighting with the input method, but it's not really fundamentally different than boneworks' (and of course boneworks did it first, so they get credit for innovation if nothing else). Of course Alyx looks far better, has better writing, and has better pacing, but again that's polish and valve's massive budget. But take the difference between how boneworks and alyx handle picking up objects, for example. Boneworks wants to remove the limitations imposed by specific "grab points" and such, which seems like a good idea on paper (you can use any tool in any way their physics model will allow!), but in execution you grab a hammer and half the time it's facing the wrong way, so you have to do this weird juggling thing to hold it right. That isn't a lack of polish, it's a fault in game design. They actively made the decision to have it be like that then chose not to adapt when their ambitions didn't work out. If they added conventional grab points you'd lose the ability to... idk, hold the hammer weird and use it to somehow bug yourself across the level, but is that ability really worth making conventional use of the hammer substantially more annoying? If I have any criticism of Alyx's gameplay it's that it has the opposite problem. They got rid of soykaf that might have been cool because it would have been kind of buggy. Alyx was originally going to have melee weapons but they got rid of them because they were soykafty. Arguably a good choice, but if you make enough choices like that you end up with a game that is so unambitious that it doesn't even have a proper jump because it makes some subset of their trial group nauseated.

>>3898 Fair point, but IRL you can find people reasonably easily from shared interests. Unless your interest is lusting after anthropomorphic animals, there is much less of that in VR chat. >>3897 It's worse than facebook spying on your movements; they're probably taking pictures of inside your house. If you use a fake (but real sounding) name, and leave a dedicated VR room unadorned they're probably not getting much. It's a shame that the best value headset had to be this way. I wonder if they're selling the hardware at a loss.

Its interesting to notice how people behave differently in VR. You know how interacting on the internet creates a subconscious detachment from social peer pressure, like a bit less inhibition? A similar thing happens when people put on a blinding headset, they can't see the people surrounding them in real life. They tend to swear more and often embrace game-violence (which you could argue is just game-like playfulness, but a random client in a non-game simulation had a borderline mental episode and started beating up their coworkers avatar in response to playful punch, and when their coworker got annoyed and put their headset on the ground, they started curb stomping the avatar for a while). When there are no eyes, most people act a little differently for better and worse. Maybe it could be a useful tool in psychiatry. **A 70yo man who used to fly model planes handled teleporting a virtual player much better than a posh 50yo woman who'd never touched a controller in her life. Elite: Dangerous seems to work well with VR, however, if you aren't accustomed to flying a spaceship that's constantly doing barrel rolls and flips, then it can induce motion sickness very easily. The other issue is that you will probably need a joystick if you're going VR because you can't see the keyboard and it will be quite difficult to use unless you're a god-like touch typer.
