PC gaming for the first time
Agent Smith · 2019-11-29 01:39
What games would you suggest to a person who has hardly ever touched PC gaming before?
Getting a gaming PC again soon for the first time since I was a teen, I am interested mostly in the deep, weird, and sometimes just funny experiences that only seem to exist on PC.
I am most interested in:
Space Station 13 (used to play)
Kenshi
Deus Ex
Crusader Kings II
Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
Thief I & II
Vampire Bloodlines
Mount & Blade: Warband
Postal
Honey Select
Elona
E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy
Already play on Linux:
Dwarf Fortress
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
21: The World
Already played in the past:
Valve games (mostly Gary's mod)
Elder Scrolls games
Stalker Games

Go play fallout 1 and 2 and new vegas. The first two games are great and new vegas was well liked by those who loathed fallout 3. 3 sucked and so did 4.

I don't wanna invest any time into a game (WLOG whatever artproduct) unless I know that each my playthrough moment shall be great. So I'd be interested in, for each game name, an accompanying terse sentence explaining why it's good. Then, I can look up maybe promising ones, to see if it's worth playing.

OP here, Haven't actually played most of the games yet, but here is a brief summary of the impression I get from some of them.
>Space Station 13
An absolutely hysterical round-based multiplayer Space Station simulator with simulations of chemistry, the human body, air pressure, botany, electronics, robotics, genetics, and on and on and on. Has an impenetrable interface.
>Kenshi
In this open-world mix of RPG, physics combat games, RTS, simulation games that took 10 years to make, you can build a squad and freely interact with a brutal and unique post-apocalyptic oriental world, engaging in slave trading, building bases, influencing factions, performing drug trades, and splitting up you squad. Some people hate the interface, some people say it's tight and you get used to it.
>Crusader Kings II
An incestuous, plague-ridden grand strategy game where you build your empire across Medieval Europe while appointing horses to your court and marrying the pope. Costs a lot of money for all of the expansions, which you pretty much need for the full experience.
>Elona
An open-world roguelike RPG which allows you to be everything from a pianist to an 8 armed mutant to a slug, has the depth of classic Roguelikes but its own completely unique gameplay that has kept the community alive and developing the game for 13 years.
>E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy
An RPG shooter in the vein of Deus Ex set in a Warhammer 40K and Blade Runner setting, both praised for its depth of gameplay and panned for its flaws, but tries new things and achieves fun core gameplay.
>Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
A roguelike in a post-apocalyptic zombie setting with countless character customization options and what has been called the most extensive crafting system ever created.

Are you saying you don't have a PC at all, or that you just don't have one with the hardware for gaming? Because several games on your list are old or light enough to run okay if your hardware isn't ancient, and I'm sure some even run on Wine. I know Elona does.

Sounds like my kind of thread. Some recommendations on top of my head:
>UnReal World
Since you posted some sandbox/rogue-like games take a look at this gem. A Finnish iron age survival simulation rogue-like. Continuously in development for almost two decades and programmed by two Finns who have an autistic interest in a primitive lifestyle. Be sure to check out their YouTube channel if you have an interest in those things. You can get the game for free on their website.
>The Stanley Parable
I really liked it when it came out, since I already played the HL2 mod it was based on. Basically you follow the story of a man called Stanley and his wild ride through a non-linear story telling experiment. I wouldn't say its especially deep, but my 16year old me liked the attempt at achieving something different.
>The Void
Another niche source game. On my backlog for a long time and still on my first playthorugh right now. Seems more like an art experiment than a video game sometimes and is hard to describe but it has this fantastic dark, ambient atmosphere.
You are a lost soul in an entity called "The Void". You can only survive by collecting and growing color and nurturing the sisters who in change give you information and access to their chambers. There are also the Brothers who rule this domain and will hunt you down if you break their codex.
>Gothic 1&2
Gothic 2 was probably one of the best RPG's I have played. If it weren't for a lot of bugs and some rough edges probably one of the best games aswell. Very atmospheric gritty world and your choices really do seem to have an impact on people and your game. Organic design: NPC's have a daily routine, talk to each other and you're just a "normal" guy like them, having to work hard for everything, nothing is gifted to you. The world is meticulously crafted and allows you to explore alot. There are several different factions you can choose to join which will shape your playthrough very differently. It's pretty hard and can be unforgiving, taking a wrong turn or saying the wrong words to the wrong person can really fuarrrk you over, but I believe there's also a feeling of reward in that.
>Exanima
An interesting take on the action RPG/dungeon crawler genre. The thing is that everything, especially combat is physics based. So not only the speed or weight of the weapon and how hard you swing it will affect its impact, even the weight, height and physique of your character will make a difference. In development for some years by a small group, had a lot of problems at first but is shaping up now. It also has one of the best and most accurate armor systems I have EVER seen in gaming. Its mostly historically accurate and allows you to wear several layers of equipment. E.g.: Undershirt>quilted tunic>chainmail>plate mail. I haven't really played it for a while now but I do believe its worth checking out solely for its novelty.
>Stardew Valley
Nice "little" farming sim in the footsteps of games like Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing. In development for 8 years by Eric Barone, who did the programming, art and music all by himself I believe. It's actually pretty massive and allows you to spend hours on end on expanding your farm and collecting stuff. It does get a littlebit grindy and repetitive at some point but the sandbox gameplay makes up for that. Just focus on the things you enjoy, the villagers are also interesting characters and each of them has their own story they will tell if you befriend them.

>Planescape: Torment
best wRPG, story-rich with interesting characters, reads like a book
>Fallout 1 and 2
also great post-apocalyptic RPG with lots of freedom and interaction
>The Longest Journey
point-and-click adventure with nice story but very bad outdated graphics
>Primordia
not a classic but nice sci-fi adventure game with robots I enjoyed
>Hyper Light Drifter
amazing looking pixel art game that's a bit like early Zelda
>Bastion
another game like that with 10/10 art direction
>Monkey Island 1/2/3, Grim Fandango
classic point-and-click adventure games
>Clive Barker's Undying
fun horror shooter
>Brutal Doom
classic Doom with fun addons, 2016 Doom is deemed very fun also but I haven't played it
>A PS1/PS2 emulator to play the PS stuff
>A SNES emulator to play the SNES stuff
>A NeoGeo emulator to play Metal Slug

Congrats! Be sure to check out GOG (good old games) as it sometimes has the same prices as steam without DRM or the soykafty online stuff. If you don't mind steam, humble bundle sometimes has keys for a steal. And there's also Epic Games, with their own launcher and ecology that give away popular games for free every few weeks. It's owned by the chinese company tencent and has a kinda bad reputation with steam users, personally I don't use it but I guess its worth checking out (or at least looking into) if you want the free games.

Wow, this thread is matching up well with my tastes. I think of...
Vampire: the Masquerade -- Bloodlines: you already said this one, but I will reiterate it; play it sooner rather than later.
Hotline Miami (pic related): topdown, psychedelic ultraviolence with an unusual, fast-paced gameplay loop (small stages, squishy character, immediate restarts), an incredible soundtrack, and all the fun of pretending to be an animal; better than my description would suggest
Yume Nikki: topdown exploration of bizzare, interconnected dreamscapes; lonely, melancholic, and creepy in a way that's hard to pin down
Bernband: exploration of an alien city with no other objective than "being there"; takes all of about an hour to complete
Naissancee: another exploration-based game with minor first-person platforming; traverse a massive, futuristic superstructure alone with your thoughts
Nethack: my personal favorite of the classic, dungeon-crawling roguelikes; in-development since the 1980s; embraces the idea that it's what you don't know that will kill you (but honestly, there are tons of interesting roguelikes)
F.E.A.R.(came out on multiple systems, but still largely a PC game): horror-action, single-player FPS with a slowmo mechanic; still well-regarded for its enemy squad AI in spite of its age, while its visual effects are among the most aesthetically-compelling of all games I've played
VA-11 HallA: animesque cyberpunk bartending
assorted MUDs: the grandfathers of MMOs as we know them, accessed through a textual interface; a lot of these exist, covering various genres and styles, but player populations are generally low; Sindome is worth looking at, but maybe start with something more newbie-friendly or even a deserted MUD where you can learn in peace

>a gaming-tuned version valve calls Proton
Is proton actually based on wine source? I didn't know that. Or are you just saying they do the same thing? I agree though, every game I've run with proton has worked very well.
I'd also recommend playonlinux. For a while I was a "I'm just going to configure wine myself because I'm not a pleb" snob, but playonlinux's default config is really stable for whatever reason. I can usually just launch arbitrary exes directly from my file manager as if I were on windows.
Tyrell Wellick · 2020-06-15 18:32
>>3228
Not the other poster, but yeah, Proton is Valve's fork of Wine. It works great in my experience, too, but it's still not to the point where I could run Linux full-time on my gaming desktop, unfortunately. Part-time, yeah.
Gyula Kovacs · 2020-06-16 08:43
>>2857
Do they have to be bought through Steam? Or can you just add random .exes?
Miho Iwakura · 2020-06-16 16:47

Yeah, Proton is open-source, and you can compile it yourself. I haven't personally done so, so I don't know how difficult it is, but it's here on Github (with what looks like instructions):
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton

>>3232
Oh, yeah, sorry-- I didn't answer that question directly. I'm not really an expert on this; I've just played around with Proton a bit in my free time. But-- I don't think that you can run random executables with Proton; that requires compiling it yourself.
Hitomi · 2020-06-16 17:08
>>3233
Thanks anyways. I assumed you could, since it's possible to add random .exes as shortcuts within Steam on Windows. No idea if that's an option on Linux, or whether opening those shortcuts runs them within Proton.
Chani · 2020-06-16 18:37
>>3234
Adding "non-steam games" as they call them is an option on Linux. Idk if you can use proton with them. Idk if you can use proton without steam either. Proton is just a wine fork so you can always use playonlinux or lutris (or just plain wine) instead.

I regularly see people saying that GOG games are "cryptographically signed", is there a way to download these signatures from GOG's servers? Even a simple hash sum would suffice in worst case. The purpose is checking authenticity of pirated games of course, that's the whole purpose of non-DRM games, to share with friends, and how do friends check if those games are authentic?

Since I'm currently playing Crusader Kings II, let me give you an honest to heart review for this.
First off, you are much better off pirating the game then paying for it, unless you are somewhat rich and can afford at least 300 dollars worth of DLC because base game that went free to play on steam now without them is literally a demo version, and not worth your time.
If you haven't played any grand strategy games before I advise you not to start with CK2 , it is hell for new players and you will find yourself spending hours on forums and googling stuff; the mechanics are very complicated and you will have to read a lot to understand how to play it correctly.
Also if you are playing it for the first time I would advise you to start with already suggested realms because the developers of the game didn't pay much attention to "lesser" important countries you may be emotionally attached to; you will encounter a lot of complicated problems that otherwise you wouldn't have if you played with a more "important" realm, there are also barely any achievements on steam for less popular realms if you are into achievement hunting.
That being said I think its a great game in the end that could be much better if paradox wasn't a greedy cunt, it will make you feel like a king if you succeed but be also prepared to lose nerves over it. I still spend hours on it daily and there are still things to discover in game.
My advice would be to play it slow and steady, plan ahead and never trust anyone, things will almost always turn against you so be prepared.
Deus Vult.

Certain puzzle games can retain replayability once you complete the puzzles, primarily through actively allowing and encouraging optimisation. For example something like a Zachtronics game where you are encouraged to go back to old levels and improve or replace your solutions with things like histograms to see how you compare.

>Doom 1/2
One, they're classics. Doom 1 episode one plays kinda like a proto-survival-horror, but the rest of D1 and all of D2 is more fast-paced. You shouldn't expect a perfect experience, because they were the first big FPS games and there were design decisions that we don't use anymore (highly randomized damage, anyone?) but they're overall good games and the level design still holds up.
Two, get you a GZDoom and you'll have a giant library of mods to work with. From recreating WolfTNO's dual wielding, to stomping around as a spellcasting gunslinging dragon, to Megaman X-inspired robot car girl mode, to a simulationist tactical FPS experience, there's some really fuarrrking good soykaf out there and it's free.
If you don't wanna give Bethesda money for a game from 94 you can use FreeDoom (which has tougher levels overall because it leans more into modern hardware and thus more enemies). Or, y'know, do five minutes' googling and find a totally legit copy somewhere.
>EYE: Divine Cybermancy
This soykaf is a TRIP. It's also dense as fuarrrk. There's a few guides lying around somewhere in the net. Your legs are OK.
>Risk of Rain 2
A roguelite minus the randomly generated levels. Really fuarrrking good; gameplay revolves around searching the current area for items before starting a bossfight, balancing the need for upgrades against the slowly-ticking-upward difficulty. Difficulty levels are "Easy", "Medium", "Hard", "Impossible", "I SEE YOU", "I'M COMING FOR YOU", "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA". More fun with co-op.
>RUINER
Hotline Miami clone on the surface, with some neat upgrade paths and a sense of style that kills as hard as you do.
Also, ignore the anon who suggested brutal doom. Brootl Doot is a technical achievement in many ways--it showed that you really can do headshots/locational damage in the GZDoom engine--but it's spaghetti nightmares under the hood and just not balanced well (the "brutality bonus" mechanic is completely fuarrrking worthless). If you want a Brutal Doom-like experience that's a little better balanced, try JohnnyDoom (adds different execute bonuses based on the enemy you kill, and a super meter) or BDLite (smaller, simpler Brutal Doom despaghettified). You can also try one of the many, many mods that implement modern-ish reloading weapons and a quick kick button.

Good choice OP, luv me medieval warlord simulator. Once you have a good understanding of the mechanics get the Viking Conquest DLC, it's better than the base game in almost every way if you don't let the difficulty level filter you (and avoid the soykafty story mode). Some good conversion mods are Gekokujo Daimyo edition (Sengoku era Japan setting), Honour & Glory (pike and shot era eastern europe) and 457 AD (migration era roman empire + surroundings). The latter 2 are still receiving updates, so that should tell you how robust the modding scene still is for this game.

You should try out MOBAs, despite what everyone says.
Playthrough many FPS out there. Be wary of the version you get because some engines don't work as well depending on the version you get. HL in specific can ruin your experience because of patches breaking the game.
You can try some fun MMOs too, give TERA a shot.
SS13 is awesome, but takes sometime to get into it.
Try out the X series of games for spehhhhsssss. X3 in specific is amazing, especially when you start getting into the simulation aspect.
If you care about driving or flying, get a stick/wheel before you do. It makes the experience so much more pleasent and relaxing. Join a War Thunder discord and play with a group.
Playthrough the RTS classics too, SC, CC, and WC.
After playing through that mountain, you can always emulate everything you've ever wanted to play.

chivalry is just plain fun. insurgency has great, more realistic mechanics. trackmania is really nice although i haven't played a lot of the new one (i most enjoy the community servers with custom maps and radios).
if you want a good story, play ESC. it's free on itch.io. more of a "visual novel" but very nice vibes and a great story. VA-11 Hall-A is also great.

Space Station 14 is a FOSS recreation of SS13, and it's just got mature enough to play.
The community's small (though there's always a busy server) and it doesn't have all the absurd depth of some SS13 servers yet (no mining level for instance) but new features are added every single week.
Ein · 2022-01-16 18:16
>>5695
Space Station 14 fuarrrking SUCKS. Just try and drag a locker or an object that fills up a whole tile through a doorway and watch as your char starts spazzing out due to movement not taking place on a cardinal grid anymore, but despite this construction and doors, and walls all do.
Have to be honest, chief. There's a certain point at which you should just give up the trappings of SS13 and just make your own game WITH the parts of SS13 you want, not try and make SS13, except fundamentally break it due to the fact that the art direction doesn't support pixel based 2D movement. (Something like project zomboid for example manages because walls are thin and even though the map takes place on a grid, there's no equivalent to "pulling" something through a doorway on it.)
Additionally, the UI experience is godawful compared to byond, the way that you have to click on a tiny icon on a backpack sprite to open up your backpack, AND have the backpack window pop up in the middle of your screen is not really something I'd call user-friendly, since more often than not you're interacting with objects adjacent to your character... the need for a precision click is also bizzare considering how large backpack/belt sprites are too. The only thing that's actually been improved is gunplay, because you can now see how many shots you have left in your gun before it runs out of bullets without having to examine it.
Intents have also been removed, replaced with a soykafty toggle that more often than not results in you smashing a door when you really meant to interact with it. Additionally grab intent doesn't exist and disarm intent works completely separate from 'harm/help', as a toggle that doesn't care if you're on harm mode or not. It's soykaf because the game doesn't provide any idea as to whether you have to be on disarm+harm to push people over, or if just disarm by itself is fine.
The 'harm toggle' change has also made it harder to cuff someone since if you have either disarm or harm on and you click someone with handcuffs in your active hand you just end up beating them with the cuffs instead.
I'll also say that the development team is more focused on adding chemicals and ghostroles rather than actually working on core systems that don't exist yet, like the ability to actually evaluate what type of damage your wounds are, or to be able to examine someone and actually be able to tell what they're wearing. There's no indication as to whether or not the former's being done concurrently with the 'real soykaf' of the game since the developers are a group of thoroughly unlikable and snooty people. There's also the fact that the game's come this far and there's no actual map editor yet, I believe you have to make a private server for yourself in sandbox mode and build a map yourself, which is honestly kind of baffling since it's a far worse experience than using fastDMM or the actual BYOND map editor.
As of yet the only 'superior' features it actually touts are the changes to gunplay I mentioned and that you can now play Doom through the arcade machines (albeit it'll play like soykaf and be really laggy and janky), as well as the fact that C# is infinitessimally easier to work with than DM code. It still suffers from SS13's fatal flaw, however, in that there's nothing to actually do except grief or sabotage people, since mechanically the game's systems exist soley so that people can die in entertaining ways.
Eldon Tyrell · 2022-01-16 18:29
>>5696
Who hurt you?
SS14 works for me (and presumably all the others playing too), no problems with dragging.
> the UI experience is godawful compared to byond
Nothing beats BYOND, it's awful UI is legendary.
Given the pace of development, I wouldn't be surprised if ss14 overtakes ss13 in a few months.
The main advantage of SS14 is that it runs flawlessly on Linux, which SS13 never will (I believe it runs on an embedded version of Internet Explorer).

Sorry buddy, but this type of rationality is exactly why I'm planning on using the SS14 codebase for a commercial project of mine, and yes, I can actually do that since it's MIT-licensed, no, I will not give them any more credit than a tiny, teeny, small 1 pt font sized 'credit' in the options menu. You reap what you sow.

I can't recommend Mirror's Edge enough. The game is still stunning, and the time trials are amazing. That experience of going around a level, looking for possible routes and shortcuts, before trying to get the execution down and chain it all together just fits so perfectly for me. It's like half a puzzle game. The difficulty is tuned really well, too, you usually have about 2 seconds leeway on the execution with the ideal intended route. Enough to make you feel good without tearing your hair out. Revisiting the campaign after having done the time trials also gives that dark souls 1 kind of feeling, like when backtracking through an area where you're already familiar with the enemies and shortcuts, and you just make an absolute mockery out of the game. You won't even see the police that is supposed to be chasing you.
The themes and setting are pretty cyperpunk too, but the story's kind of ass. The game is absolutely one of a kind, there's nothing that plays remotely like it out there, and it does it damn well. It's also got a gorgeous art style, and one of the best soundtracks out there. I honestly think it's a game everyone ought to play once. Both for the novelty factor and for just being very good at what it does. It'll run on anything nowadays, too.

Touhou and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are both big series, so it's a little daunting where to start. For S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I'd recommend Shadow of Chernobyl as a good entry point into the series.
As for Touhou, this is debatable since there are many draws to the series. In general though, most would say that you should start with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Some would say it's outdated but most versions that are still available (and executable on today's hardware) come patched with the features most 2HU games enjoy. It also has the added benefit of essentially being free (if I recall correctly, ZUN said that he doesn't mind people getting illegitimate copies of EoSD since he's lost the files and will never be able to port it to newer hardware).

Fable: The Lost Chapters (ignore Fable Anniversary) is an excellent game for PC. It's better on Xbox, but still very fun to play on PC. It's rough around the edges in some areas because it was an ambitious small studio game that got the attention of Microsoft who wanted to make it their flagship RPG, but if you want a game to just vibe in, Fable's perfect for that. The PC version also has some neat mods, although nothing to the scale of what the Elder Scrolls community has come up with (we're a small community with home-grown tools). Although if you want a typical quests-and-stats fantasy RPG, this isn't the game to play; even one of the co-creators calls it the first "walking sim with a bit more to do," and it's more inspired by Monty Python etc than Tolkien for example.

Ironically, people focus on PC ports, but the console "ports" are often just as bad. The recent Star Wars game was a mess on all platforms, but I guess console gamers have lower standards (or publishers have more control over the media that focus on console - likely both.)
However, we get buggy releases on all platforms because shareholders want return on investment yesterday, and the longer they wait the longer it takes to reinvest elsewhere. Publishers therefore push studios to release their game as soon as possible, because retards are always going to buy the next Star Wars or Call Of Duty regardless of what state it's in.
Once they make their millions, they go into damage control to maintain their reputation, and for media to give them free publicity. Rinse and repeat.

Fallout 4 is not a good RPG experience but the shooter mechanics have improved over previous entries.
They removed karma, faction reputation and made SPECIAL stats matter very little since you can just increase them to 10 with perks. The dialog system is very bad since you now have dumb dialog wheel thing and you don't know what each of the option even does since they are labeled like "Yes", "No", "Tell me more" and "Sarcastic". Even if you always treat NPCs badly, they don't seem to care because no one gets angry. You can just talk to them again and they seem to have completely forgotten your past behavior. Also, all dialog is voiced and there is no way to turn it off. That's a problem if you install (or make) a mod because suddenly your player character becomes totally mute for xxx hours. There are also some other problems with the game. For example, the fact that they hand out you free power armor at level 1. And why do random raiders also have power armor? And all guns are just pipe rifles.

Agreed but i think you arent harsh enough. They destroyed everything about the game. The shooter mechanics felt closer to a FPS genre shooter game, but within the context of the rest of the gameplay i would say the gunplay felt even worse than Fallout 3. Instead of being an immersive RPG with an engaging world that i could lose many hours exploring and engaging with like New Vegas and Fallout 3, it was an empty boring lifeless FPS game masquerading as an RPG. The writing was atrocious too. I cant see how anyone could justify rating it better than like a 4/10
