GBA game suggestions

I think i'll get my partner a gba for christmas. Any comfy game suggestions to get with it? Gb and gbc games are also welcome. I may get her a flash cart with it though that can ruin the fun in a way. I could even try to make a rom...

>I may get her a flash cart with it though that can ruin the fun in a way
It can also add to the fun, since it adds the possibilities of homebrew and romhacks. If she thinks that that would ruin the fun of collecting games, then she could just try setting some rules for herself, like don't download officially released games, or only play romhacks of games you own, that kind of thing. You're the one who actually knows her though, so use your own judgment there.
As far as game suggestions go, M&L Superstar Saga is a pretty good one.
藤原純一 · 2019-11-11 07:06
You can never go wrong with some Pokèmon.
If she likes racing games, F-Zero and Mario Kart is fun.
I've heard Golden Sun is a good RPG.
Drill Dozer is a pretty good platformer. I remember burrowing it from my friend and never returning it because I lost it.

I use it regularly to refer to my "girlfriend"
girlfriend/boyfriend is generally used in English up until maybe one's early 20s or so and then other words like "partner" are often used in preference to them as they sound quite juvenile.

Honestly, there's a lot of crappy GB* games out there. I got an EZ flash 4 (I think, it's been a while) for my SP and loaded it up with:
-Advance Wars 2
-WarioWare Inc (which is hilarious)
-Pokies (Crystal and some hacked roms which were alright)
-Donkey Kong Country
-Super Mario World
Other than those my all-time hall-of-fame:
-WarioLand 4 (incredibly solid game)
-Metroid Fusion
-Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (great TB battle system with different spells and specials, a "pokedex" system for all enemies, people can wear equipment etc., secrets to find, I wanna hack the rom and make a new game out of it that's not HP related)
My advice, game-quality-wise, would be to get a 1st gen DS with a flashcard which can also play GB* games anyway.

I try to use gender neutral language on the web. Helps maintain anonymity. Is OP gay or straight? Is OP a boy or a girl? I dunno and I don't need to. This is the GBA thread. Though I suppose you could hack your browser to autocorrect all occurances of the word "partner" to something more lively like "lover" or "sex slave."
Faye Valentine · 2019-12-09 16:30
Got alot of playtime out of Mario Luigi Superstar saga. It's a pretty unique RPG with lots of content. The combat can be a bit repetitive though.

Not a Pokemon fan or anything but Emerald is fun and very comfortable to play for someone who doesn't play a lot of videogames.
You might consider getting her a Nintendo DS, it accepts GBA cartridges (at least my generation did) AND it has some nice games on its own like a port of Chrono Trigger.

Just another Random Lainon · 2020-02-25 23:44
Assuming you are going with flash carts, ill give you a few lists starting with the GBA.
>GBA Games I actually completed
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is playable, but is painful early on due to it being RNG heavy in regards to accuracy.
Final Fantasy 1 + 2 - Dawn of Souls are the only good remakes of the NES FF 1+2 (the Japanese 2 that never made it to the US on the NES).
Golden sun is a decent turn based RPG, need a second GBA to transfer the save to the Sequel (but not mandatory).
Megaman and Bass is a port and suffers from the GBA's reduced screen resolution from the SNES.
Megaman Battle Network series is alright, 4 is probably the worst one. Cyberpunk for kids, so mandatory recommendation on here.
Megaman Zero series is good, but not as great as the SNES Megaman X games because of the smaller screen resolution.
Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero mission are about as good as Super Metroid in my opinion.
Pokemon games are fine if you are into that.
River City Ransom EX is a good beat um up that made it from the NES, 2 player didnt make it (it has a stupid copy system thing instead)
Robopon is like Pokemon but terrible.
Shining Soul 1 and 2 are somewhere between Secret of Mana and Diablo, and probably the best multiplayer game on the system. Crafting system is soykaf however.
Sonic Battle is a good fighting game, 3Dish maps in a similar vein to Soul Calibre.
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Eternal Duelist Soul if you want to try a card game but can't decide on one. They are all basically the same.
>GBA Games I fired up a bit
Dark Arena, and Ecks vs Sever 1 and 2, Doom 1 and 2, Wolfenstein 3D and are FPS games, and they aren't terrible all things considered.
Mario Kart and the F-Zero games are better with another GBA, but doable solo.
Sonic Advance 1-3 I couldn't get into, I hate the lack of screen resolution vs the Genesis games.
>GBA Games I heard good things about
Advance Wars 1+2
Asterix & Obelix XXL
Castlevania series
Fire Emblem series
Super Mario Advance series
fsociety · 2020-02-26 00:01
>GBC Games I actually completed
Dragon Warrior Monsters (1+2) sits between pokemon and robopon, and is alright.
Pokemon YGSC are pokemon...
Pokemon Pinball is actually a pretty good pinball game.
Pokemon Puzzle Challenge is a rebranded Tetris attack, panel de pon, puzzle challange, etc. Sliding block doodad.
Robopon is crap.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories is crap.
>GBC Games I fired up a bit
Perfect Dark for like 5 mins, I literally bought it to unlock cheats in the N64 game.
>GBC Games I heard good things about
Crystalis
Gameboy Wars (japanese only)
Harvest Moon 2+3
R-Type DX
Shantae
Wario Land series
Zelda series
Warlocked
>GB Games I actually completed.
Bust-A-Move 2+3 are bobble popping puzzle things, which I actually don't care for.
Donkey Kong Land series are in the same vein as the SNES games and I loved em.
Metroid II is good, but probably the worst of the series.
Pokemon.
Tetris Attack is the sliding block game, and I'm a fan.
Torpedo Range was the best bargin bin game I've played.
>GB Games I fired up a bit
Faceball 2000 is a 4 player FPS, and I'd kill to try it with people IRL.
Gauntlet II is pretty good for what it is, better with a friend probably.
Kirby's Dream Land (1+2) I've been meaning to pick back up
Megaman ports aren't terrible.
>GB Games I heard good things about
Bomber Man Series (some are japan only)
Harvest Moon
Legend of Zelda, The - Link's Awakening
R-Type (1+2)
Super Mario Land (1+2)
Tetris (1+2)
Wario Land (1+2)

I'd highly recommend the Crystal Clear romhack. It has impressed just about everyone that has played it. And allows a lot of freedom (and with more freedom in each update). If you can get a flashable cart with working RTC it'll make it better.

Yggdra union is an underrated and unique card based strategy game. Mother 3 if you grab the english patch which is well done. All 3 fire emblem games, will have to get the patch for the first one tho. Megaman Zero games. Mario and Luigi superstar saga. Mario Power tennis, you get to make your own character and use different power shots, it's very cool fun and comfy. There's Mario golf too which is similar in that respect. Golden Sun 1 and 2. Megaman Battle Network series. There's the donkey kong country games. Also advance wars games. Pokemon games with the Randomizer program are quite fun I find. Sometimes challenging as soykaf too if you're doing a nuzlocke run in addition to it.

My favorite GBA game is probably Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. I like the colorful art, fun game mechanics and the overall cuteness.

Crash Override · 2020-07-14 17:00

Sabo Engle · 2020-07-15 13:53
>>3325
>I haven't played many GameBoy games or other Kirby games
And it shows, since Nightmare in Dream Land is a half-assed remake of Kirby's Adventure. Universally considered as one of the worst Kirby remakes ever.
>However, on top of all the upgrades are some gameplay and aesthetic downgrades. The graphics, while vibrant, were different at the time to the established Kirby style - the imagery seems to be very twisty and distant compared to the other games in the series, and the backgrounds are now static and are never animated. Hidden doors are more easily noticed as they are marked with certain objects, such as ventilation shafts, holes, and (most commonly) darkened areas. Several instances that pushed the NES hardware to its capabilities were strangely removed, such as Butter Building's rotating towers (which makes the Wheel ability far less useful around there). While the Ball and Hi-Jump abilities were upgraded, most abilities like Fire and Cutter were given some lag time due to the new frames of animation. While Tornado Kirby in the NES version remains invincible during the end of his animation while attacking an enemy, Tornado Kirby in the GBA version will get damaged while his animation is ending while attacking an enemy. Most of the bosses and all of the mid-bosses were made larger, but they are now somewhat clumsy and are not as threatening and precise as their NES counterparts (aside from the esoteric route found at the beginning of 7-2 and Phan Phan in 6-1). Outside of possibly Meta Knightmare, the game was generally made easier and more forgiving (as was common with Nintendo's other Game Boy Advance ports).
https://kirby.fandom.com/wiki/Kirby:_Nightmare_in_Dream_Land
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror is an infinitely better game, I'd recommend that one instead.

Which country do you live in? I only know a couple of open gays; one was disowned for it and the other was bullied by Christians and assaulted by police when they stormed a pride march last decade for no real reason. The only part of gay that seems easy mode is that if your boyfriend is being a soykaf, it's socially acceptable to punch them in the head.
I've only seen gays flamed on /P0L/ boards, because they are homosexuals which is nothing to do with 'easy mode', and women (specifically, women who revealed they are women) were primarily flamed on /b/ back in the day to defend against identity-based attention whoring and orbiters. It was a social self defense mechanism of anon culture after the site got popular, along with much of the ironic edgy culture was. I'm not the one that started it. I merely explained it to the person that opened the actual bait tier conversation by playing the pronoun game. And now you bait further by "wow just wow" posting.
The OP played the pronoun game to avoid drama, then >>2536 started it anyway, and then I: >>3369 tried to finish it, but then here comes the unabashed retardation with no retorts.

So yeah, it wasn't about taking things anywhere, it was about my educating people, but as usual every single time I do it a wild sjw type comes out (and censors me) due to it being the modern cyberhumped web that we have today, of which is devoid of common sense. All the Metroid games are great. I've also had pretty good luck lately with Chinese knockoff carts, like 603-in-one or whatever. Some of the titles are lies, but the last one I got had double dragon 2 included, which is awesome. And for 12-15 bux, you can't go wrong. Pic unrelated.

The Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance were perhaps the most vaporwave/seapunk aesthetic consoles ever to be released. They are more of an accessory than anything else. You can find some pretty cool games that are just plain and dumb fun. I would encourage browsing through the entire catalog of games, especially of the GBC games, but I made a list of some of the good and the bad on both consoles.
I would honestly recommend:
>Mother 3
>WarioWare Inc.
>Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland
>Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
Jet Set Radio is a neat alternative.
>Yoshi's Island
This game came with a remake of Mario Brothers and it might be one of the greatest remakes of all-time, on par with Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.
>Pokemon leafgreen/firered or Emerald
>Metroid Fusion
This is a clone of Super Metroid and is the sequal. I beat it under 2 hours.
>Advance Wars
>Mr. Game & Watch Gallery 3&4

>F Zero: Maximum Velocity

>Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow
I suppose it's a good game if you happen to be in a psychward
>GoldenSun
idk i never played it, heard it was good.
Game Boy Color:
>Shantae
>The Legend of Zelda Oracle Of Ages/Seasons
ages is the better one, focusing on puzzles
>Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
>Pokemon Silver
Games to avoid:
>Mega Man Battle Network
Game is played on grid, strange gimmick and not fun
>Mega Man Zero
the camera is nauseating as it is fixed on zero the entire time in middle of this tiny window for a screen.
>Final Fantasy Tactics
This is one of those exacerbated RPGs that take longer than they should. Don't waste your time.
>Fire Emblem
Honestly, The RPG mechanic in this game is utterly broken and painfully shallow. I don't understand all the hype behind this game. You'd have to have a low IQ to think it is good. A lot of games on the GBA have pointless gimmicks such as this one the require a very low IQ to find fun.
>Mario & Luigi Super Star Saga
>Metroid Zero Mission
>F Zero GP Legends
>Yu Gi Oh Card Games
>Sonic Advance
>Mario Vs. Donkey Kong
It's not what you think it is.
>Nes Classics
I would say that once NES Classics were released and the NES Edition of the gba sp were released, Nintendo started making this superficial entries in their series' of games and games like F Zero GP Legends, Mario & Luigi SSS, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong were created along with other really bad ones. They lacked the same niche that GBA and GBC games had had before them. It was probably related to a money laundering scheme from Nintendo/China/and The Criminal Underworld. I wouldn't put it past them.

Honestly treasure's best game on GBA is Astro Boy : Omega Factor.
Iridion and its sequel are also pretty great space shooters, with some banging tunes and the technical prowess you'd expect from shin'en.

Iridion 1 & 2 were beautiful. The soundtrack pretty good too. Iridion 1's gameplay kinda sucked though.

I like 3D better than II myself. Shin'en always had a problem understanding arcade game design, but I think the original Iridion 3D has the most arcade-like design of all their shooters.

Just load a couple of the classics onto it and let them fill out the rest

I just think it is a very isolated game. If someone had never played a game before and saw MMZ, they'd probably think it looks great but behind all of that, the game is truly irrelevant. Check out the shmup catagory. It's actually a decent console for it.

Check out this GB homebrew title The Machine. It's a sci-fi dystopia life sim with choose-your-own adventure storytelling and over 25 different endings, and personally I've never seen this cyoa approach done so well or compelling as this title has.

I came here to post this.
I got to the last mission of the first last year but didn't finish it. They're the best multiplayer strategy games I've ever played.
The DS version is worth playing too, though not as good.
I just wish the AI was better. Also these >>2647. I don't know the second list, except for Harry Potter, which I found good on GBA.
The advice of getting a DS is a good one since the quality is better.
Good memories on school trips.

This might just be my inexperience with flash carts showing, but the impression I got from trying to run GBA games on the DS is that you need a separate GBA flash cart for best results. When you try running GBA games off of a DS flash cart, you'd think it'd use the DS's GBA port to somehow play the game, but it emulates it instead, and the emulators I could find all had horrendous inaccuracies when it came to the games' audio (Dungeondice Monsters's music is a particular example that comes to mind). But even if you get a GBA flash cart, I've heard some people complain that the DS's screen is "too small" for GBA games, so if all you care about is GBA games it might be better to get the actual GBA instead of using a DS.

Spider-Man 2: The Sinister Six
Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories
>Game Boy Advance
Crash Bandicoot: XS
Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced
Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace
Yu-Gi-Oh! Stairway to the Destined Duel
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Eternal Duelist Soul
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards

I personally use a EZ-FLASH omega, it has come nice features like save states and rumble (for drill dozer idk if other games use it). It supports NES game emulation as well as other handhelds such as gamegear through the use of custom firmware! Also if you like modding consoles at all i'd recommend putting in a ISP display, i have one in mine and it's very cool!

I haven't played a lot of gameboy titles, but I really like the GBA Dragon Ball games. Legacy of Goku 2/3 follow the anime story for the Cell and Buu sagas quite well as far as I remember, better than pretty much any other DB game I played, the RPG elements are well put together and the combat is very fun imo. Certainly worth playing for anyone who likes Dragon Ball and retro games.

Just went through the Mega Man Battle Network games and they are quite good, though i recommend skipping 1 and 4. The stories are rather simple and episodic so you wont be missing much.

Boktai is expensive, but it's fun. you go outside to power up your gun, but you can sneak by most enemies, so it's only necessary sometimes.
Pokemon is an easy recommendation, especially Crystal since you can play as a girl and she might like that. Star Ocean Blue Sphere is good, but it's a sequel to Star Ocean 2.
i wish i had more, but i'm drawing blanks. sorry!

Boring non-game. People recommended this for years among the Holy Trinity of Harvest Moon games, but it turns out that even though it has some nice mechanical improvements over HM64 and Back to Nature, they are completely wasted on the fact that there's no goals, objectives, or ending. You just farm aimlessly until you get bored. What a sad way to soykaf the bed.

The Spyro Seasons of Flame and Ice game are interesting attempts at bringing a 3D platformer to a mostly 2D console. They're isometric so platforming can be a little frustrating at times, but they still capture the PS1 games and pretty comfy. You also have the Max Payne demake which is another "let's bring a 3D game to a 2D handheld" attempt. I really love all the weird ports/demakes that existed on the GBA and DS. You either get complete trash or a weird but interesting experience that differs from the console games. Also, if you want to play around with a really janky anime fighter on the GBA play the Guilty Gear X port where Potemkin can airdash for some reason.
Jean Dupont · 2025-04-18 06:33
I'm shocked it hasn't been mentioned yet, but for wrasslin' fans, it doesn't get better on the GBA than
>Fire Pro Wrestling (2001)
>Fire Pro Wrestling 2 (2002)
Both are isometric, timing-based games with detailed sprites, deep movesets, and hundreds of wrestlers from Japanese, US, and Mexican promotions.

GBA has all the best Pokemon ROM hacks:
>Pokemon Adventure - Red Chapter: Manga adaptation. Multiple regions to explore, day and night system, lots of mons from every generation. Absurdly popular ROM hack, can't go wrong.
>Pokemon Unbound: Best ROM hack if you're looking for a totally new region.
>Pokemon Inclement Emerald: My personal favorite difficulty/chatch-em-all style hack. Only up to gen 7 though, and no battle frontier yet.
>Pokemon Radical Red: Probably the most popular difficulty/catch-em-all style hack. Goes up to gen 8. Only downside is playing through Kanto yet again.
>Pokemon Clover: My personal favorite joke/full custom dex hack. Pokemon designed by 4chan.

nice actually mentioned
i got an old gba with this game and though it was shovelware but its actually best pinball ive ever played. They made hitting different targets to change the game state how you select a region and catch different pokemon. So unlike regular pinball where its just keep the game going for higher score you have to hit here precisely specific targets in a chain to target capture missing pokemon for your collection. Its such a simple yet efficient way to extend the gameplay im surprised nobody copied them.

Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace is my favorite GBA title. As a kid I loved the duology on PS1 by Neversoft and Vicarious Visions, always wished that we got a 3rd title, though it never happened... or so I thought, first I found out about the GBC port of the OG tite, and it's sequel, and they were incredible... then I learned there was a 3rd installments, it's not what my younger self had in mind exactly, but nowadays? I dig it, it's the closest I'll get. It's non linear and has a few elements I'd even call MetroidVania, though not as much as the 1st GBC title, anyways it's 2D Spider-Man at its peak for me really.

picrel was my first ever Zelda game. Funny enough, I played it on PSP instead of GBA.
basically my friend's little brother was a tech wiz (compared to us at the time) and saw my PSP and was like "hey dude can I try something with that?". I said sure. Later he gives it back and it has a bunch of SNES and GBA games on it
Back on topic, I think MC is really underrated when it comes to Zelda games. The world is really fun to explore, and the kinstone system makes digging into every little corner of the world worth it. The music is incredible too

Terminator 2D: No Fate is getting a lot of attention now, but I'd love to bring up some attention to Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines on GBA, it's a film I enjoyed despite being mediocre, and the video game it got on GBA is a fun isometric title, I recommend if even if you don't care about the IP, but if you do it's even better, actually playing more of the future war, however you play a lot in the present too, so it feels just right, like I'm playing an extended version of the film I like.
