Whats your favorite cyberpunk themed game?
Sipho Nkosi · 2019-09-01 16:13
Personally I absolutely dig Neotokyo, you can see where the inspiration for it's artstyle and theme comes from, and the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful, really helps nail the atmosphere down. Even though it's mostly dead a dedicated community still gathers around every friday, so I can usually find a decent amount of people to play with if the server they use isn't filled up.

I wish this game's style was used more. It feels more like the future to me, this bright and clean "Apple Store" aesthetic, than classic cyberpunk does.

Man ME's world is great, nothing is ever in your face, no flying drones, holograms or other high tech sci-fi stuff happening, Buildings are based off of architecture you can see today, some of them look like buildings you can find in Tokyo, and any information about the world is told through the news screens on elevators or computers, and theres always a camera placed somewhere on the path you're running.
Roger Pollack · 2019-09-22 21:44

Yes mirror's edge. I really like the escalation of the character models from beat cops to diet riot cops to riot cops to runner cops. I think the character designs become increasingly intimidating over the course of the game.
Also, trackmania^2 is racing game where you play as a fully autonomous race car driving around a completely automated abandoned super track. At some point humanity mysteriously vanished without a trace and it's unclear how much time has passed since the apocalypse. Now the machines just drive forever, racing for no one, striving to go faster, faster, faster.
H.R. Giger · 2019-09-25 15:06

Pursuit cops were the scariest thing when you encounter them, they shrug off all your punches, can't disarm their tasers and take you down quick. I've gotten good at wiping the floor with them over the years though.
Vasya Pupkin · 2019-09-26 15:20
>>2420
What really spooks me is how they run slightly faster, and I can hear their footsteps getting louder and louder as they run me down like a wild animal.
To keep harping on about mirror's edge, I also think the plot fits very well into the cyberpunk genre: your sister is framed for murdering a prominent politician, and you have to clear her name. The ending is pretty ambiguous but I hardly think that destroying the Shard would put a dent in the police state. I'm sure that Faith and her sister are happily going to be on the lamb for the rest of their lives... as a family.
I really like OG mirror's edge. I want to see more of their world that they built.
J.C. Denton · 2019-09-27 06:26
I already posted on this thread, but since I'm coming back for recommendations, I'll post some of my favorites that haven't been posted already for others to try if they want.
>Soul Hackers / Shin Megami Tensei in general
Pic related, RPG family of games with god rejection, gigant ass corporations and man-machine interfaces to summon demons. General /cyb/ tones in almost all of its games.
>VA-11 HALL-A
Comfy visual novel where you're the bartender of a soykaf dumpster city, and the characters are everyday joes who can't/won't leave the city for different reasons. Developed by venezuelans who were pretty much living on their own dystopia.
>E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy
RPG/First Person Shooter inspired by the W40K universe about an eternal war between two factions. Environments are /cyb/ as fuarrrk. Check your leg status.
>Shadowrun series
Isometric RPG. I mean come on it's shadowrun.
>System Shock series
You're a hacker who got caught hacking and you either go to prison or help the corporation stop the rogue AI that runs a space station.
>Watch_Dogs
>Ok but seriously the atmosphere of the first game is amazing. Though kinda mediocre game. Second one's objectively bettter but it's also way less /cyb/ than the first game.

>Soul Hackers

Junichi Fujiwara · 2019-12-07 06:25
>>2618
Honestly I love the original ME because the surveillance isn't in your face like in the sequel, but if you look around you can always find a camera or two on the path you're going down, the news propaganda and news helicopters tipping off the cops. The fact that people and possibly even corporations might be hiring runners to deliver sensitive information because transferring it normally or digitally is a bad idea. It never goes into that high-tech generic sci-fi surveillance state, everything that you need to know is in the environment you run past and stopping to look around rewards you with some nice amounts of lore.

Idk what to think of the newer deus ex games. I played MD like a year ago and am half way through HR now. I don't follow gaming news and I'm obviously late on this one anyway, but I'm vaguely aware that people liked MD and didn't like HR, and I don't get why. The plot of both games is pretty stupid to be honest, particularly the aug racism thing from the second game (it kind if made sense in context, but frankly the context was already pretty stupid to begin with). If they wanted to do a gritty story about future prejudice they should have picked an actual race because it's pretty hard to take cattle cars full of "augs" seriously. At the end of the day it feels like they were pulling punches because they didn't want to upset people by getting "too political" in a game about the literal Illuminati.
On the other hand, I feel like HR was a better game than MD in pretty much every way. The Prague setting is more interesting and better realized than Detroit. The characters and side quests were more interesting. You seem to have more options in the way the story progresses (I haven't finished it yet, so I could be wrong, and both are definitely worse in this department than the original deus ex). I will say, HR keeps pestering me in menus and such to install an (I assume) defunct cell phone app and there seems to be some kind of microtransaction thing related to your outfits but I've completely ignored both and it hasn't impacted me.

No one has mentioned Cataclysm DDA, which is very cyberpunk unless you're considering it from a purely aesthetic standpoint. It's a free, open source roguelike set after an apocalyptic event brought about by clandestine government laboratories' investigation into intradimensional technology, wiping out the vast majority of humanity & unleashing various lovecraftian plagues on earth. You get to custom make deathmobiles from scrap, chug mutagens to become anything from a rat to a mi-go, pack your body full of cybernetic implants (from synaptic accelerators to monomolecular blades to arm-implanted railguns to fuccing alarm clocks), really whatever you want while cruising the bleeding husk of new england. best soykaf ever

Kind of playing fast and loose with 'cyberpunk' as a description. I'd say it's exploring a world wracked & eventually killed by this dystopian cyberpunk future, but it's not heavily aestheticized in a 'high tech low life' way, or with the noir tone or imagined futures -- its world very closely resembles our world but with the ability to explore BSL-IV labs, D.U.M.Bs, XEDRA research facillities, and where incredible consumer technology has just hit the markets but it's still just new england as we know it.

Personally prefer the original, the world is that lowkey cyberpunk atmosphere, where if you look closely, you really start to see the pervasive surveillance, and how PK gets all that info on the runners to create the pursuit cops, or how the cops always seem to know where to find you when a news chopper isn't involved.

yea, you are probably right, i still kinda like catalyst more because as a east european the whole idea of a post soviet state failing at liberalism and breeding oligarchism hits close to home lol
but one thing that is more cyberpunky in the sequel is the absolute prevelance of cameras everywhere, and the absolute tracking of anyone everywhere in the city by any means neccesary.
like yea, lowkey is more clever wont disagree, but the sequel still explores some interesting concepts both politically and athmospherically, also, the whole idea of a corporatized ad infused society is a lot more present in catalyst
also i just like the movement more, its kinda more fluid, shame you need to unlock moves tho.

I really enjoyed the half-life series, other good titles would be syndicate and remember me (pic related). I especiallylike remember me for all those mass manipulation aspects and the fact that there are marginalized people, bezerk goverment, etc. gives you a nice anarchistic feel.
Other honerable mentions I would say are the bordelands series, rage, far cry blood dragon has nice aesthetics although it doesn't have much of a cyber punk setting It does give you that nice sci-fi feel. On the other hand there's also Brink, which doesn't have much aesthetic to it and the gameplay isn't that great, it does have a nice cyber punk setting.

If you're getting stuck on the first few stages its most likely you're just struggling to figure out the syntax and systems you have. Once you wrap your head around that it'll click and you'll glide through until you get to the more difficult levels.
Either that you aren't fundamentally capable of dealing with basic assembly code but that seems rather unlikely.

Exactly. Like right here I designed my code so it worked for the given test case, but it doesnt work for other cases where that are different amounts of orders.
I figure I need to replace the SEEKs with LOOPs to find the end of the file, but I'm not sure how to do that with the tools I have.

There are a lot off cool tricks and "hidden features" that you can perform with Exa's that aren't explicitly mentioned in the manual that you pretty much have to "innovate" yourself.
For instance: you can use the COPY M _ or COPY _ to M to "Pause" EXAs. The Exa will wait for another EXA to pass it data or ask for data before continuing execution. It's really handy so you don't have to fill your code with NOOP and/or roll your face against your keyboard trying to time them to work in sync.

One thing that I love about the game is how you have to figure most of those little tricks out for yourself. Really makes you feel good when you find a new tool and apply it instead of just having it spoonfed to you and reducing it to a simple matter of pattern recognition.

Void · 2020-11-16 18:51
If Zach ever does another Exapunks game, I'd like to see more puzzles were you have to work around enemy Exas outside of Multiplayer.
Maybe have a stage were a system is defended by a patrolling Hunter Killer Exas, maybe tricking a host's exa to execute your code or even killing and substituting a host exa with your own.
XERXES · 2020-11-16 19:23
>>3792
Would also be cool to have blue team stages where you have to write a system that does some job and avoids being comprimised by malicious Exas.
But maybe that scales the complexity of the game too much.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
It was released, but then,
- DLC were released for you to buy
- It was released again, different from owning the game + DLC, a wholesale package edition
- It was released again, breaking mod compatibility, and the previous version was removed from the store.
- It was released again for VR
- It's a glitchy hell of corporate whoops
- Microtransactions were added
- There is never going to be an Elder Scroll VI because they can just keep reselling the same thing over and over again
- Consumers turn it into degenerate porn
- The company that makes it was bought by Microsoft
This is what cyberpunk looks like. You're finally awake

The sad thing is, there's a lot of games that fit the aesthetic, but I've always had trouble finding games that really deliver on the hacker experience(tm). Like, I don't play enough EXAPunks, I need to play that more, but I just kinda get tired of playing the same thing over and over, and even EXAPunks doesn't get at what I really want: A game that's all about sensitive info, protecting it and stealing it. There's a lot of games that have hacking as a mechanic alongside shooting and/or stabbing, but there's not a lot of games where you're trying to hide your home server while cracking open other people's home servers. Uplink is really close, but it suffers from a lack of content (and Hacknet is even more limited in content).
It's also really fuarrrking hard to find things that get the half-assembled, scavenged tech look right. RUINER nails this, as mentioned in the thread. Mechanically, Objects In Space has this in spades--there's a whole set of mechanics centered around buying and replacing spare parts for your janky space freighter, either to repair your nav computer so you can fly straight again or to optimize your emission profile and avoid the pirates who fried your navcomp in the first place.
My dream game would involve building a deck from spare parts, then using it to break into a series of servers, all while desperately trying to obfuscate my character's name and location.

You navigate it with a command line, use a couple basic commands (like cp, ls, cd, scp and a few more)
I think some of the tools are somewhat based on something that exists
Unfortunately a lot of the hacking is just typing commands in a predetermined order, without a whole lot of thinking
I guess I don't know what authentic means, but I'd say it probably isn't very authentic
I haven't played it for more than an hour, but I think Nite Team 4 is slightly more based in reality

To anyone thnking about playing this. Don't play it. The plot twist at the end is that you're a glitterboy. And also that the starting cutscene is the ending. The ending is that you can't save your glitterboy lover.
That being said, although I forget why the ending happened, I do remember it being quite interesting with how it made choosing the questions you ask people a strategic choice, even though I mostly picked the 'wrong' choices in conversations.
I'm pretty sure the game ends on a downer ending though. So in a sense, like VA-11 HALL-A, you're only ever able to extract information about the setting from people, but only sometimes are able to change what happens.

Cruelty Squad is ribofunk instead of cyberpunk. Cyberpunk aesthetic requires copious use of some sort of computerized technology as part of the setting. Yet there are far more biotechnologies and epigenetic modifications featured in the game than cybernetic augmentations or digital interfaces.
This style is not to be confused with biopunk, which I consider a "cleaner" version of ribofunk (much like the relation between cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk) and the one that features some use of viruses, such as the Resident Evil series. Evidently, CS is more on the "dirty" side of biotech futurism.

Late to the party, but Madness: Project Nexus has a lot of cyberpunk themes, both in aesthetic and story. The main storyline is a bit post-cyberpunk, if that makes sense, where the characters go through a ruined city that used to be full of normal people, but are now in the hands of scrapheads and failed agents.

The game is literally about a bunch of outcasts, otakus, and weirdos who build a time machine out of junk in their ratty apartment setting in motion events that lead to a utopia and WW3. If that isn't somewhat cyberpunk I don't know what is. Sure, it doesn't have a lot of that classic aesthetic but it explores a lot of themes in cyberpunk literature: existentialism, identity, alienation, the possibility that technological process is chipping away at individual liberty. It's at least somewhat cyber.

Signalis, I think many would find it's non-standard presentation to be pretentious but I find it to be more of a tribute to things that inspired it. Also it's a personal opinion of mine that the word pretentious gets thrown around at art with a more abstract or non-linear presentation of ideas far more often than it should. Either way, pretty good if you like survival horror. It also uses a lot of classic German music and paintings, and it takes place during a setting very much akin to cold-war Germany, so German lains may have a better appreciation of this game.

Although I know some people who are just like you and have the sample problem, you may want to try correcting it in the video settings or with what you play your games on (if you're rich enough). Here are some tips I've learned from those people:
1. fuarrrk around with the FOV, a lot of people tend to have their preferences and higher FOVs tend to work better for people who get motion sick.
2. If you're play games on a TV despite looking at a computer all day, you're gonna wanna sit a little further back from the TV to make sure your actual field of view is as equivalent to your computer as possible.
3. Turn off head bobbing or camera sway if possible, this causes motion sickness in a lot of folks I know.
4. Low framerates or inconsistent framerates are best to be avoided. If you can, use a monitor with a high refresh rate. And make sure your FPS is regularly set to a specific amount like 60.
5. Turn off Motion Blur, Chromatic Aberration, or any other effects like Film Grain that distort the picture. Not only do these cause motion sickness for me (someone who doesn't get easily motion sick) but I also find these effects really ugly and don't know why games keep pushing them.
If you're still getting dizzy well I'm afraid you're just gonna have to consult a doctor or live with it. I hope that's a cheap and easy thing to do wherever it is that you live.

Is very good. It's mostly a 3rd person shooter but there are tomb raider elements like puzzles and jumping off walls to reach new places. >Industries of Titan
Is pretty dumb. You make money by hiring office workers to click on ads, take that capitalism! It's not so much satire as the devs have literally no clue how an interplanetary mining company would function in the first place.
>Cyberpunk 2077
Is shockingly bad. It's Grand Theft Auto created by people who hate Grand Theft Auto. You get absolutely nothing from killing civilians except the cops come after you right away. You get absolutely nothing from killing cops too, not even ammo. The only NPCs that drop loot are ones that have yellow names. But there's no pattern to it, it's not like there are different gangs who wear different colors and if you kill too many of them they recognize you and shoot first, or if you kill lots of their enemy gang they will protect you and shoot at the police when they chase you, you know basic soykaf that GTA did 30 years ago. It's literally just "these random NPCs are ok to kill because we said so", thanks devs. It sells itself as an open world game but there's no freedom at all there is only one thing the devs want you to do at any given time.
And there's literally nothing going on. Compare to Red Dead Redemption 2 where the towns are 100 yards wide and 90% of the map is countryside, you're like fuarrrk this is going to be a boring game. But it's not, there's soykaf happening all the time
>2 confederates are about to execute a federal tax collector do you intervene?
>a kid is asking for money but if you get too close he shoots at you
>a wagon is blocking the bridge ahead, men with guns tell you to go back
>there's a burning cross in the distance oh soykaf it's literally the kkk
>a woman's horse has died and needs a ride back to her farm
You can play RDR2 for hours and hours without repeating any of these random events. Cyberpunk 2077 has none of that it's just a completely dead city with soulless NPCs milling around and the only way you can interact with any of them triggers a police chase.
It also suffers from the Fallout problem where everytime you walk through a doorway you have no idea if it will trigger a 5 minute loading screen. Then you find that you're inside a completely pointless building that serves no purpose and you need to wait another 5 minutes to get out again.
There's other stupid soykaf like the first 20 minutes of the game is designing the physical appearance of your character ..... and then you find out that the entire game is in first person view. And really long cut scenes where you are just being driven around the city by an NPC while another NPC spits out a line every 1-2 minutes
>press this button to skip the rest of the car ride
The fact that they had to add that should have tipped them off that they're doing it wrong.
And the game is like 200GB as well like what the fuarrrk is inside all those bytes.

StarCrawlers and StarCrawlers Chimera - it is kind of sci-fi, but the abundance of corporations in the plot and in the game world makes it quite cyberpunky. Awesome dungeon crawlers, if anything, they do not make those often nowadays.
Burn:Cycle - a 1994 point-and-click. Good luck launching and completing it. It's definitely not impossible, since I did it, but it can take some technical know-how, since there were no convenient GOG re-release or something along those lines. If you'll make it to the end though, you will get quite a memorable (IMO) ending.
Rise Of The Dragon - another point-and-click, this time from the year 1990. This one does have GOG re-release though, and is overall better than the previous one, I think... save for the ending.
I will also underline the already mentioned, yet quite under-appreciated (IMO) Ion Fury, Hard Reset and Gemini Rue. I also have stuff like Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death and that new Robocop game in my list of vidya I want to play, but since I haven't played those yet, I cannot really tell you anything about them.
That would be it from the top of my head. If I'll remember something else - I'll post more, obviously.

Some of you will disagree but portal is cyberpunk.
>Big Corpo play God
>Including experimentation on humans
>Revolt of the machine
>The machine consciousness is altered by cores
>The machine is set free but choose to do what it was doe to do because there is no such thing as freedom
All that in an Apple aesthetic which is the one true Cyberpunk aesthetic. >>8192
