JanusVR

JanusVR, on first glance, is yet another virtual reality chat game. But what separates it apart from other VR games is:
1. It's more like a 3D web browser, as typing in website links will load worlds this allows it to have decentralization.
2. Quite a few of it's worlds have a neat weird experimental feel. You know that feeling of wonder you got when you first started using the web in the 90's? Some of the 3D websites on Janus VR manage to capture a bit of that, strangely enough. It honestly feels like JanusVR is a small glimpse of everyone thought web 2.0 would be like in the 90's.
With that in mind, why have we as a community let JanusVR die? A lot of it's worlds are broken now, and that's a damned shame. JanusVR doesn't have all the features VRchat has yet, but it's worlds often have a different feel. It's worlds often have a dreamlike feel, and they weren't made by memelords. You'd think JanusVR would be right up Lainchans alley. It's decentralized, open source, has a retrofuturistic web 1.0 feel to it, you can talk in text, and it's websites are constructed through web browser-like code. Surely there's got to be a way we can save JanusVR.

>why have we as a community let JanusVR die?
probably because vr headsets are rich people soykaf.
personally i found janusvr to be kind of cool conceptually but extremely awkward to use. id rather use regular chat software or play a regular video game, not walk through an instantiation of the unity asset store while trying to find someone to talk to. honestly its the same reason i dont like vr chat but at least that has the benefit of overcoming the initial chicken and egg problem and manages to draw in an interesting, if underage and trolly, demographic.

Miss the adventure here when this thing was new. A Janus Revival would be really cool.
8chan's mall, Ben Garrison everywhere, the E.Y.E room.

Well, what's the cheapest VR headset it works with?
I'd play with it, but I don't make much money.

fuarrrkin VR is a hobby for rich niggas or children who beg their parents hard enough
I'm barely above minimum wage on full time hours and the >1000 dollaridoos a decent VR headset costs is just too painful considering I have no idea how much value i'd get out of it.

If you're somehow fine with using Windows 10, the Windows mixed reality headsets can go for as cheap as 100$.
>>2174
Maybe exactly because of that.
If something is supposed to break into the market first, it needs to have capital, in order to advertise it and make it popular.
And since the majority of people are already playing vrchat and other games, they aren't really inclined to switch to something that requires effort to get it running.
Also the share of open source enthusiasts, which also own VR is probably rather low, since they require a lot of proprietary software to run.

maybe, but a headset isn't required to use VR.
>>2410
it works without a headset, so $0 to use the monitor you already have?

Is VR mixed with URL'S navigation type represent the idea of new "visual" web? Is this a new small step, or we all getting new Worlds.com?
Jet Black · 2020-01-15 01:58
their is this thing called a-frame that you can use to make 3d vr worlds with

I'm vaguely curious about vrchat, but the couple times I've taken a look on Twitch it was all really creepy people roleplaying as anime girls. I remember something similar with 2nd life where this woman showed me and a friend how her avatar could take on all sorts of sex poses.

>vr headsets are for rich people
Your opinion was deprecated with the release of the Oculus Quest standalone (does roomscale VR for 399$). If you can afford a Nintendo Switch then you can afford an Oculus Quest. Also Oculus just dropped the price of the Oculus Go (even cheaper than the Quest) by another 50$.
Quest has been selling quite well and the content lineup is surprisingly huge. Lots of PC games are getting ports for the Quest store or are getting released on the unofficial Sidequest store.

I met the founder of JanusVR and the whole team at VRTO. I talked with an engineer for like an hour and a half and the founder for 30 or 45 minutes. They were super nice guys, and the conversations we had were really great.
Also the engineer I talked to did a live coding session where he showed some cool stuff about creating an html defined VR environment similar to how John Carmack showed VRScript (LISP) before Facebook ruined it by changing the syntax to Javascript and renaming it ReactVR.

It turns out back when I had my Oculus Developer Kit 2 (DK2) VRChat was the less popular app compared to Converge (since gone and the devs work at Rec Room iirc), or AltSpace VR (acquired by Microsoft and subsequently ruined).
I think even JanusVR was more popular than VRChat at one point. I remember Palmer Luckey, Cymatic Bruce, and some other early days VR crew went and held a meetup in Janus VR if my memory serves me.
The odd time I ever managed to find anyone in VRChat back then (it was so empty whenever I was online I was usually the only one online) it was usually another developer, and we'd end up just talking about how we were looking forward to the consumer devices releasing and asking about each other's applications.
It's kind of funny to see how VRChat has turned into this massive autism clusterfuck given it's origins were so humble.

Don't lie to him, a VR headset is at least 300 usd at the cheapest, and realistically it's 500 without including the 2000 dollar PC you need to go with the vive you'd buy, and then on top of that you must afterwards buy games on top of this, of which are meant to add up to more than the console you bought, as video game industries always make more on the games sold than the actual consoles with how it mathematically plays out.
SO, you won't find it for-filling unless you spend at least 700 usd. I, as I am not him and a NEET, only make 200-400 per year.
Fat chance I'm getting anything more than a 20 usd cellphone device to go with an obama phone, and most VR won't work on that due to planned obsolescence. And free stuff is disgustingly bad to begin with most of the time.
Also, games that did work from the playstore literally self destructed, the freeware did, after a few months and just didn't play anymore even though I had the updates off to prevent such a thing. That's when i gave up on VR as a poor person. I would buy a 300 usd rift, but facebook, of which is the (((government))), bought the rift many years ago. I was hyped until that happened, barely holding on to hope afterwards, and once the android failed me completely I just don't care anymore. Drugs is the most any human can hope for, drugs, sex, and old emulator games nes-psx. That's my life since the early 2000s and it will always be my life even as decades pass it seems.
>>2762
The Rift itself is immoral to even own, and you have to buy games on top of that thing and people are poor in this current age.

I have never used it but I can make suggestions that would make it better thus possibly revive it. Apologies if these already are in it. Instead of relying entirely on VR headsets just make it so it can also run on Android devices so people can just make their own VR headset using their phone some cardboard and some lenses. Also considering you have to type to chat and navigate how about some speech to text input to make it feel a little more natural to chat without subjecting yourself to a bunch of people's annoying voices and give it a text to speech option that can be toggled on and off. There should be two modes a mode where you can explore without interaction with anyone and a public mode you can interact with other users.

Do you actually run this setup? It's the exact thing my friend has and I was wondering if he could use VR.
His egpu is a 1060 but the thinkpad he has actually only uses 2 pci-e lanes for his thunderbolt port.
