Yearly E3 Thread

Motoko Kusanagi · 2019-06-10 17:04
"I feel like I'm the only OP for these threads" edition. So here we are again, this is the thread for discussing our personal highlights of the conferences. Next year I'll try to make the thread before E3 starts so we can discuss hopes/fears for every conference. Anyway, what are the best/worst parts of the conference so far for you, Lain? The Cyberpunk 2077 is the most schway thing by far and it's the first time I'm legit hyped for something. Check out the trailer feat. Keanu Reeves if you haven't: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YApuEWtG30w The Outerworlds looks amazing too, coming from the devs behind Fallout: New Vegas (among others) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmyF8IjfSUI Also, sue me, the Lego Forza Horizon 4 trailer looks fantastic and is out this week! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cASCytz8o9g DOOM 2: 2, or Doom 5, or Doom Eternal(ly confused about the name) looks straight out of hell and I can't wait to get my hands on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGSMoMtPmbI Those do it for me so far, what are your thoughts on the topic so far, Lain? Today's PC Gaming Show, Ubisoft and Squeenix, and tomorrow's Nintendo. What do you expect/fear from these next conferences? Personally, hope for new NieR and fear anything Ubisoft could do. Discuss!

I don't actually watch all the E3 streams, I just wait for Nintendo streams since I usually have their consoles. Can't wait for Nekopara 4 for Switch and Goku in Smash. Seeing all the Keanu Reeves memes is amusing though.

>>2056 I'm very excited for Cyberpunk 2077 as well. CD Projekt Red has been outdoing themselves with each game they release. Comparing Witcher 1 to 2 to 3 you see a near-exponential quality and quantity increase. I'm also extremely excited for Animal Crossing, even though it'll be quite awhile before it's released (March 20, 2020). Animal Crossing is the perfect game for me in a sense. It's always felt genuinely relaxing and joyful to play, and its core systems encourage playing just a bit each day. No binging, no abandoning. It integrates itself neatly into life.

I've gotta say, I was actually pleasantly surprised by some of the things that got shown off this E3. Cyberpunk 2077 definitely looks to have a lot of potential, I'm interested to see where it goes. It will probably be something of a treat considering the amount of work and care CD Projekt Red seem to be putting into it. The Outer Worlds will also probably be a good treat, I have faith it'll be a good showcase of the skill and experience of Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain, among some of the other veterans at Obsidian. Though it wasn't technically announced at E3, Swen Vincke and Mike Mearls there to show off the reveal trailer for Baldur's Gate 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbs2QfD9S4Q Looking at Larian's track record I have little doubt in my mind that they will make a really good RPG and I very much look forward to seeing it, though I have a few uncertainties in my mind (such as whether the game will be real-time with pause or pure turn-based) that I hope will be addressed relatively soon. I had a pretty good reaction to the reveal of Phantasy Star Online 2 finally coming to the West, shortly before I realised there aren't any plans to bring it to Europe yet, which had me pretty bummed out and bitter towards SEGA and their decisionmaking. Had some nice memes come out of the Ubisoft conference, even though I have very little interest in their major open world franchises. The granny legion was a pretty funny and also cool concept, highlighting a mechanic that'd probably work really interestingly in a game I could actually trust to execute it or any of its supposed themes well. I've always had it in the back of my mind that having a semi-roguelike game in the Elder Scrolls mould could be pretty great, where dying doesn't end your game, but lets you generate a new character to pick up the torch. Seeing Astral Chain made me sad that I don't have a Switch, I wish Nintendo wouldn't keep exclusivising platinum games that I want to play. Microsoft had a strong showing this year, and they're to be buying out developers I care about in ways that at least right now seem to be pretty alright. Hopefully we'll see this being a good thing continue long into the future.
