Who was your best AI companion, who talk, explore and may be even don't stand on your way?
Tequila · 2019-06-04 19:25
Thats a hard one anon, i played a lot of games but i forgot about most by now.
I think the most memorable coming to my mind would be leanna from dark messiah of might and magic, great game btw can recommend.
The ai was pretty ok, she would follow me and attack enemies and healt me on occasion and not do anything stupid.
Good animations and voice acting too.
She i also hot as fuarrrk, but there is nothing to see under her skirt :(.
Also dogs from postal 2, ai is pretty soykaf and they only bark and look at you, but hell feeding them and then watching them chase cats and eat them, you just cant find that anywhere else.
Never heard of an ai that actually explores before, but then again i dont bother with new games.

From a purely emotional side: Dogmeat from Fallout 1. He is very vulnerable when your in the military base because of force fields (but there are ways to keep him safe) but still he is a must have companion in Fallout 1. Fairly strong at the start of the game. I can't imagine playing Fallout 1 and not taking him with me on a quest to slay the Master.
>"It was here that Dogmeat fell, a victim of a powerful energy forcefield. I miss that dog." --Vault Dweller, Fallout 2 manual

I've played so many games I can't recall the best sidekick I had, so I'll take this question literally - one of the best "AI" sidekicks I've seen in games was A.D.A from Zone of the Enders.

Lily from New Vegas. She's effective in combat, a walking inventory storage, and has a nice back story. Also faction relations/karma don't have any effect on your relationship.

Larry "Pixie" Foulke.
fuarrrkin' baller. I would have been with Pixie all the way, if the game had let me join A World With No Boundaries.

The bots from the OG Star Wars Battlefront. I loved to snipe from obscure corners of the maps and an engineer always came with health and ammo. In the second game you had to recruit and then summon one.

When I was really young, it used to be Farah from prince of persia SOT. In hindsight she was a bit of a bitch, but when she was with me at the time, I didn't feel alone in an undead hellscape and would get sad when she'd disappear through a crack in the wall.

Agreed, best girl. I just wish they made her more unique than the other housecarls. They only added a few lines after Dragonborn, and they weren't very interesting.

I just replayed half life 2 and episode 1 and I'm going to have to nominate it for the worst companions. I can't count how many times I got killed in the base game while trying to take potshots at a strider to find some resistance fighter had stolen my spot around the corner, blocking my way from cover. And episode one, holy soykaf, Alyx needs to get laid bad. She was humping my leg for the entire game. Almost like a weird form of lag, any time you change direction you go half a foot until she blocks you, then gets out of your way letting you move again.
Incredibly infuriating games, not at all how I remembered.
Anamika · 2019-11-20 11:53

On the other hand did nothing good either, a npc partner that is all talk and no action is lame.
I just love npc fights, even if theyre stupid as fuarrrk.

I havent played hl2 in a very long time, though i would like to again.
I dont recall the ai being bad, but i guess thats cuz hl2 was the peak of gaming at that time.

I don't think there was another game where I loved my entire crew and enjoyed every bit of dialogue with them. I always had Annah, Morte, Fall-from-grace and Dak'kon.

The Nali from Unreal, Those guys straight up worship you. You'll always find yourself rescuing them from the Skaarj but they'll always give you a big fat reward afterwards.

(May Stallman forgive me for uttering this word) Microsoft office agent Foxxee. A good deal cuter than Clippy.

boone,he was useful for softening enemies before closing the gap, and his ncr status didn't matter to me because i never cared for the legion anyways

As a kid I thought in the future we'd all have robots or AI friends that would help us with problems or just be our friends.

Why do you think people use Siri? They wanted the same thing.
Pris · 2020-05-26 02:54
I get weirdly attached to various bethesda companions. Idk why, they're all annoying as fuarrrk, have very little interesting dialogue, and are basically useless except as damage sponges. Still J'zargo was (afaik) the only mage companion in skyrim that actually had decent destruction magic skills and his personality is pretty funny so hearing the same lines over and over again doesn't grate on you that much. Honorable mention to Strong from FO4 because that bit of dialogue where he thinks that the "milk of human kindness" is literal milk that he needs to find to capture the source of humanity's power is fuarrrking funny.
In terms of being an actually well designed gameplay element Elizabeth wins. They did a pretty good job of making her feel like an actual AI companion despite the fact that she can't die and doesn't really help you fight.. at least in the first play-through. By the second time you play the game it's kind of hard not to start thinking of her as an item dispenser with tits, but I'd absolutely take that over an actual AI player that can die and get stuck on level geometry.
I guess Mass Effect NPCs are also pretty well designed since they know how to use cover, rarely get in your way, and are pretty integral to your effectiveness as a party. As characters I like Legion, Tali, Thane, and Garrus, but in terms of gameplay my favorite party will largely depend on what kind of build I'm going with for Shepard.

I vote wheatley if we're going to count companions that are fully scripted, but I agree with >>2567.

Are there any videos about her? I've been searching online and I cannot find much media besides still pictures and the background on how she was made.

I agree in terms of the resistance fighters, disagree in terms of Alyx.
The resistance seem to get in your way because you can direct them to places, which never seems to work well. Alyx seems to be mindful of leaving some space behind you for you to fall back into.

A few of the ME1/2 characters were endearing in their own shlocky fanfiction way, but outside of the little plot scenes there is so little dialogue that you quickly reassess them as the scripts they are. This is one thing the older games with text only dialogue managed to pull off, type is cheap and you can put as much as you need in the game without feeling like you're wasting budget.

Dunno about the tits, but such a pretty face and demeanor

Yeah I was assessing them more in terms of gameplay. They work well mechanically as party members because IMO they're the right balance of independent ai vs direct control. Even when theyre taking cover on the wrong side of a chest high wall getting shot up the consequences aren't that bad since you get them back for free at the end of the right. On the other hand, character writing was definitely not MEs strongest feature.
>>3301
Sorry, that was crude. She's cute but I'm just saying once you've seen all of her little scenes she mechanically functions more like a machine that randomly gives you items rather than a proper party member/companion.
