I suppose this is somewhat a game, so I post it here. Tarot General. Anyone else dabble with tarot? What are good books for beginners, what decks do you like, also what are your thoughts on tarot? Oh, and what standard card games can be played specifically with a tarot deck?

>>1592 I feel like learning how to do this too, so I will keep watching this thread. I had a friend who new a lot about zodiac signs and it was a good subject when talking with normal people, so I imagine doing some quick Tarot reading could be fun for socializing.

>>1593 >for socializing Exactly what I want, it's just fun. Also looking at getting back into astrology and dream interpretation Found this resource, scouring through it: https://www.daily-tarot-girl.com/

I find that tarot helps me see a more vast perspective on events in my life. The insight I have gained from reading the cards has helped me reconcile much.

>>1598 How do you think tarot works? I've heard some interesting things, like the ability to create whatever specific rules you want for a reading and the cards working for this so long as you created whatever intended rules mentally
Nameless · 2018-12-11 06:28
There's the Aliester Crowley Thoth deck and the H.R. Giger Baphomet deck.

>>1594 Thanks for the link. I am also checking the reddit wiki for tarot here: https://www.reddit.com/r/tarot/wiki/index It seems quite organized.

Im interested in magic for which tarot seems to be an integral part, but i dont know anything about it really. Anyone care to give me a summary, doesnt have to be related to magic etc but would be better.

>>1607 As I understand it: The world is chaos and randomness, and in invoking it in the shuffling of cards with predetermined, "stored" meanings the universe will effect the cards to give a meaning. Originally, it is thought that tarot decks were originally used forcard games and gambling, but came to be used for divination later on
Unnamed · 2018-12-12 11:02
For lainons that are familiar with tarot, what deck would you recommend for beginners? Is Smith-Waite a good choice? I've seen some cheap decks on Aliexpress, so I am probably going to get one of those to start playing with.
Debbie Charteris · 2018-12-12 13:14
>>1609 I don't practice, but from talking to a friend that does its apparently pretty important that you are able to understand the imagery. That's why people start with the Waite deck. It's based on fairly straightforward European symbolism. The Thoth deck is beautiful but the illustrations are extremely dense with symbols drawn from all manner of world religions. If you want to use that one be sure to pick up Crowley's book and don't expect to be able to use it without a reference for a while.
Rick Deckard · 2018-12-12 22:45
>>1609 From my minimal researches, thus far Rider-Waite variants seem to be the most recommended for beginners. It will be important, however, to eventually choose a distinct deck that you relate to (unless it happens to be the Rider-Waite)
Cypher · 2018-12-20 15:59
>>1611 I feel, at least for the time being, that the Smith-Waite is indeed the one I relate to. I tried to look at many decks online but the only one I felt like buying was the centennial version of the Smith-Waite. For now I am trying to get familiar to the cards as they appear. Sometimes I feel like the traditional interpretation is quite different of what I intuitively feel about some specific cards though. I also am not fond of the reversal interpretation of the cards as well, it doesn't seem intuitive to figure out when the qualities are lessened or when they are supposed to be reversed. Overall the readings seem to be okay, except there is always some odd card that doesn't quite fit with the others. I guess one cannot help but deal with some chaos for tarot, as well as for life.

>>1624 >different of what I intuitively feel Go with your intuition, set new meanings based on what you feel from the cards. >not fond of the reversal You don't have to deal with reversals if you don't want to, many don't

Recently purchased this deck, and it's beautiful http://cheimonette.com/

Bought my first deck 2 months or so ago. Been using some Anki decks to memorize the deck. Also bought a book (The Holistic Tarot), but have barely read it. I bought them to try to get insight into what to do with myself, what actions to take. Smith-Waite tarot is the best for beginners because the iconography is well documented , simple, and discussed. I bought a Hermetic deck first, because the art looked cool, but to really absorb the cards message you need knowledge of Qabbalah and mysticism in general. The designs are different from the "standard" deck.

>>1605 >H.R. Giger Baphomet deck The problem with that deck is that it only constitutes the major arcana, and that it was put together after Giger's death, without his input. None of the artworks were made for tarot, but I guess that may be fine. IT'd be a great project to try to fill in this deck with the minor arcana Speaking of which, I'd love to do the same with a Beksinski tarot (pic related, also link: https://imgur.com/a/Q3XGb)

>>1679 I feel like the more thought and energy that is put into tarot, the more powerful it becomes. That's why I particularly like the Rider deck right now, because it's had so much thought put into it. Maybe tarot didn't do anything at first
Splicer · 2019-01-22 06:52
>>1676 >Beksinski tarot I did't entirely agree with everything they chose for the major arcana- I propose these changes: This for The Moon: https://uploads0.wikiart.org/images/zdislav-beksinski/untitled-93.jpg!Large.jpg This for Strength: https://uploads0.wikiart.org/images/zdislav-beksinski/untitled-50.jpg!Large.jpg This for Justice: https://uploads0.wikiart.org/images/zdislav-beksinski/untitled-49.jpg!Large.jpg This for The Devil: https://uploads1.wikiart.org/images/zdislav-beksinski/untitled-158.jpg!Large.jpg What does everyone think? I also plan on adding a minor arcana- going purely based on RWS imagery and which of Bex's artworks fit best.
