What are some games that try to make you think while also being all-around well-made experiences? I guess that's games that handle both the game aspect and the thematic aspect well without sacrificing one for the other, or even blend the two inextricably. By "think" here, I'm referring to thought of the philosophical variety, so your average puzzle game doesn't count. I think of pic related and the Metal Gear series.

>>1535 I havent' played it, but I heard that Braid pretty much fits your description.

Both NieR and NieR Automata are games that are intrinsically built around philosophical concepts while still being very competent games. The Talos Principle, The Stanley Parable and SOMA can fit the bill too.

>>1537 >The Stanley Parable this game isn't nearly clever enough for how boring the actual gameplay is. don't get me wrong, i'm not one of those people that thinks video games are all about gameplay challenge, but there has to be some tradeoff. >>1535 "thomas was alone" is nice, if you haven't already played it

>>1535 >The Talos Principle, The Stanley Parable both of these were good, I liked the lore and the computer chats with the AI though "haha you thought there was another person, all I had to do was act as a person in distress and you believed me to be more than a system." the game lore was interesting, but the puzzles were not the greatest, like a historical architecture version of portal/portal 2 without the constant derogatory humor the Stanley parable was well thought out, but the gameplay became repetitive and boring after a while, which unfortunately detracted from the value of the game. an FPS that may not be mentioned frequently is SPEC OPS: THE LINE >Yager started the game's development in 2007, taking inspiration for the setting and story framework from various media, including Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now. The game was designed to be "physically opposing", causing players to question their thoughts about treating war in a video game as entertainment, and tasks players to make a variety of morally ambiguous decisions. alternatively mass effect 3 for the ending which was mind blowing

The Witness. You won't regret playing it.

>>1535 dark souls The lore is hidden and indirect, the game designer based it off of cyclical pagan mythology as well as making everything vague enough for people to decide who's good and who's bad, kind of like MGS until 4.

I don't think there's any modern system that will play All-New Gen or Typhoid Mary. Too old for anyone here to care: Deus Ex Machina Bureaucracy The Prisoner Within living memory: The Endless Forest LSD: Dream Emulator Yume Nikki The Path Papers, Please McDonald's Video Game

>>1570 The game is significantly older than I am, but I'm trying the Prisoner (well, Prisoner 2) on account of having enjoyed the show. I can't even figure out how to enter buildings, but it seems interesting thus far.

>>1576 how are you playing it? is there a remake that can play on modern hardware, or do you have to do some kind of emulation?

>>1578 not him but playing it always fills me with the urge to go innawoods. i used to play singleplayer survival a lot. i guess it makes me consider the more traditional or primitive lifestyle...

>>1579 I'm using the AppleWin emulator. It's a bit difficult to tell what should be attributed to the clunkiness of the time and what should be attributed to intentional clunkiness.
