Let's talk about old games from before 2000.

A true classic.

What exactly do you want to talk about? Anyway, Doom is my favorite game/franchise in ever. I even went to the cinema to watch the stupid fuarrrking ass 2003 movie. I wish more games could get right the atmosphere and story telling Doom nails so amazingly.

Sid Meier's Pirates is good, even though the controls are a bit frustrating.

Age of Empires. It defined RTS games. And the music is just perfect.

>>1490 i remember i used to play this all the time after school when i was little >>1400 i like doom for its fun gameplay, but also i like it for all the crazy wads people has made for it over the years

I just started playing Path of Diablo, an overhaul mod for D2 that makes it more like Path of Exile. Its been years since I played but its just as addicting as it always was. Highly recommend

Heart of Darkness is a hard game in the same genre as Another World, i.e. it is a platformer where levels are puzzles and you die a lot.

Mine would be Baldur's Gate. It really set a standard for CRPGs especially ones based off of Dungeons and Dragons. My second favorite would be Quake especially since it (I think) made the keyboard and mouse combo a standard for FPS which then influenced console shooters with the right analog stick replacing the mouse. It was also the first FPS that I had seen use complete 3D graphics. I will say that Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, and Hexen should get mentions too. I am currently playing through Heretic using the GZDoom mod for keyboad and mouse gameplay. I played Brutal Doom and loved it. I hope to go through Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 completely in the near future.

>>1498 Oh and if we want to include console games, I could go on about the N64 games I enjoyed like Doom 64, Mario 64, Turok 2, and Battletanx Global Assault. For SNES, my favorites were Chrono Trigger, FF6 (came out as FF3 in the US), Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, and Star Fox.

You should all take the time to play Shadow President. It's an essentially proto grand strategy game / geopolitical sim, that is mechanically simple but has a great deal of depth due to the unpredictable nature of the game. It's also possible to cause nuclear winter and play the game in a thoroughly destroyed apocalyptic world, which if you're skilled enough, you may even survive.

>>1507 How do I increase leadership in that game? It seems that, whatever I do, my leadership decreases. I am also trying to avoid waging wars.

Dying in Another World...

Flashback is a great game, but its sequel Fade to Black has goddamn awful controls.

Anyone play this gem? In many ways it's an Ultima clone, but the setting is fairly compelling. Essentially, it takes place in a huge subterranean cavern complex where The Empire™ tosses people (through a one-way teleporter) it doesn't like - criminals, social outcasts, etc. It does a good job of portraying a society barely surviving in a bleak and inhospitable world. It doesn't look too handsome, but it was made by just two people in '92. They've remade this particular entry twice now (as Avernum and then again as Avernum: Escape from the Pit), but the original is the one I'm fond of.

I like memes and Earthbound.

>>1587 I played the demo of Exile (and a second game in the series I think) from a disk called "Galaxy of Games 2" I got that had a few hundred games on it. I was never really any good at the combat.
H.R. Giger · 2019-01-27 21:47
>>1587 YES! I loved the Exile games, I finished the first three and remember them fondly. I still have them lying around with all the cracks and solutions. I've tried to play the author's more recent games but I lack the patience these days, and the amount of time he remade Exile and still charged like $25 for the original was ridiculous. He's also a total asshole if you follow his blog. Anyway yeah, great games. I can still hear that "neeeooww... blergh" as the game starts up.

Anyone remember Tyrian? Good ass DOS shmup.
William Holtzer · 2019-04-06 20:19
You can play X-COM and X-COM: TFTD with OpenXCOM.
XERXES · 2019-04-07 05:25
>>1749 My man Also with all the talk about RTSs I have to mention C&C especially Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 1 & 2. RA2 is a little late for the cutoff (2000) but it was one my first PC games, and the first one I played over internet. I got my ass stomped by 1000 tanks for the first time on a DSL connection powered by a free month of internet CD. Also, I just gotta say fuarrrk EA!
Dujour · 2019-04-10 15:45
Been playing around with getting a few of my older CDs and demos to work using WINE on my thunkpad, and to be honest anons, has been really comfy, and a lot more rewardign than going through the motions of getting them up and running on a VM. Most recent game I installed was Diablo II, which has been super comfy. Would reccomend the rest of you lainons to try the same ^^ also get into dwarf fort, ik it was released after '00, but god damn that game is the pinnacle of comfyness and escapism from the depression. <3
Drano · 2019-04-10 17:21

>>1400 >I wish more games could get right the atmosphere and story telling Doom nails so amazingly. Highly recommend anyone into id's games to read Masters of Doom by David Kushner. You get some interesting insight into Carmack and Romero and the overall dynamic and way in which Doom and their other games were made. It's an older book and very much a product of the early 2000s (and the much earlier gaming journalism it's compiled from) but it's well worth reading.

>>1398 anyone here tried bulk slash?
