VRChat Lainchan World Build Thread

Special Agent Bob · 2018-07-03 04:03
So, I'm pondering making a VRChat world for Lainchan users to hang out in or just to meme in. I would like to get suggestions by lainons for what to put into the world. I'm also doing this as a mini project because I know soykaf about Unity, so this will be a nice warming project. Either leave a suggestion/idea, have a discussion about it, or say how much VRChat is a trash software, anything can be a contribution. I will occasionally post updates on progress, if others would like to help I can share the project.

I really dislike unity, sadly im not aware to offer any decent alternatives assuming you really want a "3D VR FPS" experience. Nor am i certain what it is that you have in mind, but as a gamedev if you give a decent concept i might be able to help.

>>1041 I'm not a big fan of Unity either. My biggest issue with it is that it's proprietary software. Even FOSS games made with it are still mostly proprietary. I do however like VRChat, even if I never played it, seeing videos of it people sure seemed to have tons of fun. Either way, programming something like VRChat is probably a bigger task than one would first imagine (not to discourage OP).

>>1041 >>1042 I'm asking what people like would in the world, like a lounge or a club? Music, no music?
Switch · 2018-07-03 14:14
I'd join. I have no VR headset though. >>1043 I'm thinking about a lounge or a club too. Music, DJing would be fun.

I mean, if you're making a Lainchan world, you absolutely need to have Cyberia in it
Unidentified · 2018-07-03 14:26
>>1044 You don't NEED an hmd to play the game, you play it on a monitor on 2D viewing mode.
Anamika · 2018-07-03 14:28
>>1045 I remember a dev making a recreation of Cyberia, but it was pretty light in detail. Mainly due to it's direct replication of the anime. So if I were to do Cyberia, I would end up doing my own twist to allow more features. Better seating, lighting, bar area, maybe entertainment off to the side. But it's definitely a nice base.

>>1046 Oh I know, I'm just letting you know my hands won't be wiggling.
Meddler · 2018-07-04 00:50
>>1040 Recreate Lain's house and the Shibuya crossing, maybe the classroom. That should cover the important locations from the anime. After that, it all comes down to random stuff individuals want that no one else does. I personally want a small room where Komm Süsser Tod plays on loop and there's absolutely no way to stop it. It's like a monument to my life. Rude question, but it's important at times like this: how often do you actually complete projects like these, OP? Is this even worth talking about?
Eldon Tyrell · 2018-07-04 08:29
Making a simple recreation of lains world in 3d is pretty easy, its the all around concepts of this idea that i dont get. Basically without some form of gameplay its just a walking sim.
Boris Grishenko · 2018-07-04 15:59
>>1055 It's a virtual hangout space. Of course it's a walking sim.
Yuki Nagato · 2018-07-04 16:24
>>1058 The idea of a NEET echochamber deeply sickens me. So basically a VR version of a discord server where people have names and are not anonymous. Why would anyone want that? All I can see is a bunch of glitterboys creating small groups and segregate themselves further into a secret club by hanging out only with a few selective lainons.
Technician · 2018-07-04 18:01
>>1059 >The idea of a NEET echochamber deeply sickens me. Why...why are you here?
Chani · 2018-07-04 18:38
>>1059 Whoa hold it right there mr community manager. I dont see anything wrong with a vr chat and no cliques comming up either, atleast any more than there are in irc and telegram and fuarrrk knows what many subcommunities we already got. If that is meant as a serious post, i dont see it really getting used, for one it would just be a 3d chat. What else would you do there anyhow that you cant do over irc? >>1060 Probably to offend others. If its as easy as a walking sim then all you need is a engine that supports openvr and then design some levels that look like recreations of sel, which should in all honest be a piece of cake. On top of that you could implement some optional vr features like inverse kinematic on handheld controllers and items, perhaps even the ability to draw into some sort of canvas. All of that should be available plentyfold. You could even do it in the browser using http://a-frame.io
Ivan Horvat · 2018-07-04 19:07
>>1060 To engage in textbased mental exchanges and increase the means of production. >>1062 I'm just scared this imageboard moves even slower than now if we disperse the community to IRC, VR, Discord, etc. >What else would you do there anyhow that you cant do over irc? I don't know, but the filename of OP sickens me as well. People have weird fetishes.
Lady Jessica · 2018-07-05 02:51
>>1064 The tub thing was a meme I wrote. I just randomly name soykaf as I save it on my drive. But hey, if it sickens you, unintentional mission accomplished. Community is gonna disperse whether you like it or not, it's gonna change without any control from anybody.
Neo · 2018-07-05 19:30
>>1064 >People have weird fetishes Sure, but the people who complain the most about other people's fetishes usually have the most strangest and oddly specific fetishes known to man. I would peg you as someone who is really into pic related. I have to spoiler it because it's just too raunchy but I bet you enjoy this, don't you? I would love to try VR chat OP, sadly I don't think I have the computer for it. All the videos even by everyday people looked like a lot of stupid, if a little cringy fun. I could finally be an anime girl and have cute adventures with strong yuri undertones with other cute anime girls.
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2018-07-05 23:20
>>1072 I think those videos are fine, it demonstrates how much people take a liking to the platform. I just think another example should be provided so a potential hangout of a small community can be demonstrated. My biggest issue is whether or not it should be private. My mind says yes, my heart says no. Might do some gay soykaf with the IRC, but first I gotta make the damn world.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2018-07-05 23:37
>>1078 >I just think another example should be provided so a potential hangout of a small community can be demonstrated. Definitely, I say cringy but in spite of all of that, I can really say those people were having fun and that's the important part but I can agree that more videos showing it as some 1st person voice chat with controllable avatars would be better for other people.
Y.T · 2018-07-05 23:47
May I join your server with my furry avatar? I promise not to yiff.
Technician · 2018-07-06 23:51
>>1080 All avatars will be accepted, just don't be a cunt.
Drano · 2018-07-08 04:34
Hey guys, OP here. Just an idea, would it be better to name it Chatsubo or base it on the Chatsubo bar from Neuromancer? I love Lain, but I gotta pay respect to the classics like Neuromancer.
Bob Arctor · 2018-07-08 06:31
>>1085 What was the VR club's name from Snow Crash?
J.C. Denton · 2018-07-08 08:12

>>1088 ...and the image you posted got an iconic movie quote so wrong I can only assume it was an intentional attack on my autism and clearly it's working.
Lain Iwakura · 2018-07-09 16:36
>>1094 It already exists. It's named OSVR. I really expected this VRChat (which I hadn't heard of before) to be on that platform. OP step up your game or go back to /v/ or something.
Shogun · 2018-07-11 03:33
Worlds.com will forever be more schway. Even has a VR ''mod'' in the works for it.
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2018-07-11 21:31
>>1101 Can't find the VR mod, care to link it?
Spike Spiegel · 2018-07-12 06:03
>>1106 No links as it's still being worked on, but here's an unfinished test of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9PKIsgY7Bo

>>1094 There are plenty of foss game engines that could be changed to use openvr and other features. Make a game engine from scratch is insane.
