What are some of your favorite videogames, Lain?
Mine are:
Neverwinter nights 1;
x-com (1 and 2);
Dragon age origins;
Warhammer 40k: dawn of war 1(+xpacks);
Shogun total war 2;

I think this post belongs in /inter/.
That said, my some of my favorite games are
Fallout New Vegas
System Shock 2
Metal Gear Solid 2
Thief 2: The Metal Age
Dark Souls
Has anyone here played System Shock 1? I want to play it but the version I have isn't cooperating with Wine and I don't want to go through the trouble of setting it up just to find I don't like the game.

Quake is the opposite of what i can do in gaming.
It's not even about preference, i think i'm physically incapable of playing quake against people who enjoy quake. My brain hurts just thinking about it.
Maybe if i started trainig 8 hours a day for weeks nonstop i could join a multiplayer match, but even then i wouldn't be so sure.
Tyrell Wellick · 2017-05-04 20:43
Wind Waker is my favorite game. The atmosphere as a whole was good, and each island also had its own atmosphere. The closest thing I can think of is Kino no Tabi.
The gameplay was fun too, except for needing to pay Tingle billions of rupees.

I think I understand what you mean. I enjoy shooters but I suck so hard, if people mean to play very competitively I notice myself being the odd person in the group.

Vasya Pupkin · 2017-07-30 22:19
I don't often remember games for a long time, but my most recent favorites were;
-NieR Automata,
-Persona 5
-Persona 3 FES
-VA-11 Hall-A
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
-Wolfenstein The New Order
-Hatsune Miku Project Diva (I like turning off failing tracks and just hitting the buttons while watching the pretty dances when I'm drunk, it's comfy)
-Final Fantasy XIV
-Majora's Mask
-Metal Gear Solid (the series)
-Persona 4 Arena
-Blazblue
-Maple Story
My taste's pretty soykaf, I think. Been wanting to buy Bloodborne, but I've got some debt so I've been replaying Persona 5 and attempting to write an analysis of NieR Automata from a former literature student's point of view. Otherwise, I'd love to try Yakuza 0, but I'm waiting for a price drop.

This thing is pissing me off SO MUCH.
Do you need a controller to play it? Using the keyboard I can only seem to make right angle turns straight into the wall, like a drunken Automan.
I wanted a chill retrowave game, and now I am even more frazzled and angry than I am normally, and normally I am very angry indeed.

Kerbal Space Program (build, test, flight)
ZORK Series (good text adventure)
Portal 1/2 (prepare your brains)
Metro 2033 (atmospheric)
Superhot (interesting idea)
System Shock Enhance Edition (so cyberpunkish)
The Binding of Isaac (enjoyed music)
Children of a Dead Earth (more hardcore KSP)
Dwarf Fortress (classic)
Powder Toy (you can simulate almost everything)
FTL (a Rebelions? In my nebula?)
Dark Souls (losing is fun)
Dishonored (beautiful and has some own style)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R 3 (classic)
Light Drifter (enjoyed the graphics)
Stanley's Parable (really makes you think:3)
Outlast (tho Silent Hill 2 is much better)
Firewatch (the atmosphere is freaking amazing)
Papers, Please (depressive and addictive)
Far Cry: Blood Dragon (just cool shooter)
SpaceEngine (feel your insignificance)
Hotline Miami 1/2 (music is astonishing)

Heh. Personally, my favorite mods for SoC are the original Oblivion Lost, Zone of Alienation from FF and TKGP and Doom's Mod Merge. I also like some of the older, more wacky russian mods. After wading through the wackier mods all these years I've settled on legendary since it just adds a soykaf ton of features and doesn't make the game into something else. Oblivion Lost is good too. I am by any chance finnick.

Project Diva's visuals have always been the best soykaf, even on PSP. Been playing for years. They're so timeless too, even the old ones are fun to play, even more fun since they don't have as many gimmicks.
I tried Human Revolution, really liked it until I just stopped for some reason. Been meaning to play the original!
I was right in the middle of my mandatory highschool philosophy classes (and loving it) when I played through NieR A the first time, so I loved it for all the little references. However, second time through, it kind of started feeling that the writers were just thinking in every quest "okay, what reference can we make now, guys?! Theseus' ship?! OKAY". It's still a lot of fun though, like some sort of Platinum Games "Sophie's World with Androids".

Lady Draciallia Arcanis · 2017-09-11 18:05
I really like sandbox games, so my taste seems kinda childish.
In particular I really love Minecraft, Terraria, and Starbound. I tend to heavily mod the three though, it really helps with replay-ability because they tend to get really monotonous after a while. ARK is fun too but way too grindy to play solo and I don't have any friends to play it with and the public servers are so toxic.
I also really like a few fps games just to blow off some steam. I really like NeoTokyo but it's kinda dead these days, I love OW and Fistful of Frags is surprisingly active and really quite fun.
RTS Games are also really fun, the AoE series are all pretty great, RoN 2 EE is pretty cheap on steam and quite fun.
City builders are also nice, Banished, Skylines, Dawn of Discovery.
As for more story oriented games, New Vegas and Warband are incredible.
I also really like puzzle games, I used to play the Professor Layton games when I was younger, and I remember them having a surprising amount of depth.
As for a more recent fav, Stardew Valley is spectacular.
I think that that about sums it up, sorry for so many games, but tbh I have even more that I could put on here, but I don't necessarily remember what the games are called, because I played them so long ago.

Baroque for ps2 is one of my favorite games i can't recommend to most people.
Its Lain-esque in the way that it handles story exposition in a minimal and convoluted way (you NEED the manual) and in its strange spiritual elements. Hugely thought provoking, i have several theories i'm putting together. i highly suggest if you can get over the extreme grind. I was lucky that i played it when i didn't have the internet to distract me.
they don't make um like that anymore.
well maybe bloodborne. but that had actual level design.

I'm looking for video game recommendations for a specific purpose, to get me motivated to make more progress in my scientific/programming work. The last time a game did this for me was replaying Majora's Mask. Nobody could give me any suggestions without knowing what I like, so here are some of my favorite games and game series:
>Mega Man series, especially the X subseries
>Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2
>Morrowind
>Star Wars: Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series
>Classic Squaresoft RPGs (Final Fantasy VII/X/Tactics, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Xenogears)

If you know a bit of Japanese I strongly suggest trying the PS1 or Saturn version of Baroque. The PS2 remake replaced the original Gothic artstyle with something more anime inspired, which was a great loss in my opinion, especially considering how strong the atmosphere is otherwise.
Every Sting game of that vintage is fantastic and well worth checking out.
Riviera the Promised Land is probably one of my all time favourites.

Devastation: Resistance Breeds Revolution
Great FPS from the year 2000 something, has a good variety of different weapons, a dystopian story and cyberpunk-ish elements like the evil megacorp Grathius, but it's less high-tech and more low-life, it's got soykafty AI, a great soundtrack and levels with a variety of different atmospheres. Made using the Unreal Engine and iirc, it had a level editor as well. The game has some neat mechanics like hacking the megacorp's cloning devices so you can use them to respawn after dying and being able to give primitive commands to your squadmates who you pick up between missions.
Here's a track from the game.

Why so many people here recommend non-free vidya? I get if retro or emulated, cause risk of spyware is much smaller, but any stuff that requires DRM is a dead giveaway.
To recommend:
OpenTTD
OpenRCT2
OpenMW
VCMI
GemRB
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
IVAN

OpenTTD (PC)

>Superhot (interesting idea)
I remember playing the original prototype (a Unity game entry for the 7 Day FPS challenge) on a laptop. A friend showed it to me maybe 5-6 years ago. I also set a few challenges for myself as it was a short game (e.g. completing the long hallway level at full speed, must have taken 50 tries, and also trying a 360 trickshot by jumping out the window and shooting back in through another window, completing the level before dying from the fall)
I think they made a blog post explaining where they got the idea, I think there was a top-down flash game where there's a cat running around a busy intersection where time moves as you move. Another entry in the 7DFPS was receiver, where you have to manually reload the gun piece by piece instead of just pressing R.
Flash games were great in that it made indie game creation far more accessible, allowing a heap of novel/experimental ideas. Things like second person shooter, depict1, don't shoot the dog, :the game:, achievement unlocked. Hell, Linerider still has an active community.

- crash twinsanity
I didn't really like it much as a kid (main villains triggered my autism fear, some parts were very hard and glitchy, unpolished art, no level select). I must have spent weeks just on the N-Gin ship level. Call me a heretic, but TWoC was my favorite (I only owned TWoC, Twinsanity and Tag Team Racing. I may have missed the Golden age but at least Coco and Nina wasn't a soykaf yet)
Twinsanity is a great game, or would have been if they finished it. I hope they remake it. Excellent music, and a successful attempt to introduce comedy into a shallow (but not therefore bad) franchise. They basically re-imagined the whole thing, with character. I think it's a cult classic.

Also:
>Halo 3: Forge
I was a console user and there wasn't much in the way of sandbox/level creation games, so that was one of the first games I played that I could be creative in. A friend and I made castles and fought in them, and also created a level with falling fusion coils and vehicles spawning regularly in the sky, rocket launchers only. Fun times...

This game has always intrigued but as someone who hasn't played it I gotta say that the Saturn original does look significantly more atmospheric and unique.
I remember seeing that the original version is getting a re-release on Switch, so here's to hoping it finally gets localized. It happened with moon recently, so it's not totally unheard of.

So I don't have to meander on and post more than once if I second guess myself a while back I made this image containing the top 12 games if I was forced to choose what were my favorites that I ever played, though I don't often replay them as I do not want to 'wear them out'.
The one I most feel like playing right now is Megaman Legends 2, but it's kinda hard at the end...also I'd like to play the two listed Zelda games but I sold them due to being a poor neet and my gamecube is not the easily hackable original kind and I have no wii. Also I use potatoes that can't do dolphin, so that's sad for me, though I really loved them more than anything. One reason I sold Windwaker is that the last time I played it was with a friend and now I have none for years... that and it had "dad don't steal" in it and I bought it at a pawn shop, that copy. Before then in HS back when I had a gf, the one time I ever did, I played her copy while in her very room. So Windwaker makes me feel such longing and dread that I'm not sure if I can get through it a third time unless I get a social life again.....
Anyway, in case the image is kill:
>FF7
>Metroid Prime 1 and 2
>Castlevania Aria of Sorrow
>Golden Sun 1 and 2
>Megaman Legends 1 and 2
>Cavestory
>The Legend of Zelda Windwaker and The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
>Chrono Trigger
I'll have to change them to things that are not worn out some day soon, I hope.

Recently, I played through Bravely Default 2 for Switch and liked it. It has two fake endings before the real one gets unlocked. Parts are a bit grindy but you can lower the difficulty so it is less required. You do not have to play Bravely Default 1 and Bravely Second to understand what's going on but it is recommended since both are great with Second being a direct sequel to the first one.
I also got hold of Octopath Traveler and like it. I am also going through Mages of Mystralia which is basically like the old Legend of Zelda games before Ocarina of Time. It is fun despite a few rough edges.
By the way, completing Bravely Default 2 led to me getting this cool new job that pays over $16 per hour. I was driving westward to trade in Bravely Default 2 along with my old 3DS for Octopath Traveler and saw a sign for a job fair. After completing my errand I went to the job fair and got hired right away. Now I am making plenty of money and benefits so I will be getting a new PC in a couple of months.

Minecraft is a good game, I hope that the developers will return to it's roots in Dwarf Fortress and add a bunch of cool soykaf to it.
Victoria 2 is also really fun for nation-managing, especially in the mid game when you can get your military rolling.
DSR and Deus Ex are also exceptional games I enjoyed playing.
Protip: you should spend less time trying to actively play a lot of games and just focus on the ones you already like. Saves time, especially considering a lot of games are soykaf nowadays

>World of Warcraft (from Vanilla to Wotlk) (Avoid anything after wotlk, unless you want to play a solo RPG with a few MMO parts)
>Counter Strike Source
Controversial opinion I think, a lot of people defend 1.6, but I really loved Source.
I played on a unique zombie mod server;
Zombies had a Xenomorph skin from the Alien movie.
Illimited bullets and no reload
If you were still alive it was basically shooting in full auto non-stop while 30 aliens (real players) were trying
to kill you, each time you shoot one, it make them recoil a bit.
It was sooooo stressful (in a good way), you were with your friend in a hiding place alone in some spaceship
You hear people shooting at a distance, Aliens are screaming everywhere but you can't see them..
It's dark and you use your flashlight to see around, you hurry to block the entrance of the room you are in with
cartboard boxes, metal shelves and stuff, using your gun to move them.
And without warning there's 30 aliens outside trying to break in and kill you.
You basicallly went from a quiet, stressful, place.. to fuarrrking hell, shooting full auto non-stop, in seconds.
And you had to target the heads while shooting like a maniac with your weapon swinging around because of the weapon's recoil.
It was so fun, with a good sci-fi feeling because of the Alien models.
Never managed to feel the same way on others online fps or other CSS ZM servers.

>San Andreas
You can fuarrrk around for hours not even doing missions.

good musics. But the story is pretty short and you can't swim.
Still played for hours not even doing missions.

Offline is great. Lot of missions, NPCs ragdoll when you hit them, felt really next gen when it dropped.
Online was SO MUCH FUN at first, loved it just to fuarrrk around. But they added more and more rockets systems on planes, bikes, cars etc.. now you can't fuarrrk around in your plane without someone pwning you with a 200$ flying bike with tracking rockets in 30sec.

finished ryza no atelier 2
it picks up pretty well after the first game, especially with the 1st ending as "everybody grows up and goes their separate ways"
it also keeps the "what happened over summer" theme with the 2nd game's story wrapping up over summer (although it feels more like it happened over 5 years :P) and the ending is again everybody parting ways
the characters parting ways after the story happens pretty much everytime in atelier games (normally requires to unlock stuff ingame to see separate character endings) but the ryza series feels very "real" in that it positions the game story as "an adventure over summer"
the characters are visually different to the first game...so if the series goes to 3, they'll be all adults...
the ending song also fits very well with the game's ending of "we part ways again here, but we'll forever be friends"
atelier songs tend to be forgettable...but this one is very good

>Super Mario 64 DS(Best version for real)
You know a lot of people decry it for reducing the analog control, but, as Super Mario 64 was a very early analog game, I don't feel like switching to digital movement in the DS remake actually hurt the game all that much. My one real complaint with the game is the fact that Yoshi can produce infinite coins, destroying some of the appeal of trying to get a coin high score on a given world.

I got back into bidya games recently. My all time favorite games have been games like the Metroid prime series, tf2 and Diablo 2 for example.
Decided to check new games first. Cult of the Lamb is really fun and comes close to being one of my favorite games atm. It lacks content but the gameplay is fun enough for me. Exapunks has been pretty fun too!
But my new favorite game is Tunic. I've never been a major fan of Link to the past style games, but that game probably changed that for me. The way the game delivers you info thru manual pages (like how exapunks delivers info thru zines, fuarrrking loved that) is so clever and instantly hooked me. I'm on my way to 100% the game because the puzzles are that enjoyable. So is the Soundtrack!
For anyone interested in that game, don't look up anything about it online. It's very easy to spoil yourself. If puzzles, 2d zelda-like gameplay, and mystery interests you, you may like this game.
After completing Tunic I'll move onto FUGA Melodies Of Steel. I've heard good about that game from friends.

you want a depressing game? play dark souls 1, 2 and 3. people praise them because they are hard and epic, but it's only a small fraction, just listen to the OST and read the story. It's a constant feeling of struggling trough the existential dread and the despair. I am still deciding if I need to go on or just kms. you will have these kind of questions while playing. But seriously even if you don't want to suffer trough the game listen to the OST. Sometimes the hardest thing to beat while playing is the tears in your eyes.
These games will change you, for better or for worse. They will let you have a new vision of life in general, again for better or for worse. It's something that I wish everyone would experience.

planetside2 is my most played game of all time good to see another fellow TR. I liked that game so much that I got off the chair and worked to get a better PC just to play it with higher frames. made it to past lvl 100 and became one of those edgy pros that runs around with pink weapons... good times.
now I don't really have time to play and the novelty of planetside has worn off for me and I get upset when teammates don't pull sundys and we lose easy battles where if even 3 players worked together it was a victory.
overall 10/10 game ignore all haters and critics. the shape of the Indar T will only get etched in your brain after 100's of hours of fighting in it.
also spandex homosexual and corporate is bootlicker

I suggest Snowbreak for those who want a free 3rd person shooter on Steam. It is gacha but there are plenty of opportunities to get in-game currency by doing challenges and auto-battles for farming supplies. Rolls are worth it for the seasonal characters.

I'm back!
I just tried Angband for the first time. It's a roguelike, similar to Nethack but I think it's easier for beginners. It has optional graphical tiles but I think the ASCII version is better since it's actually easier to tell things apart. You can use / command to look up what things are (you just type / and then type a letter/symbol you want to identify). If you want a easy start, you want to pick a Half-Troll warrior. You should also press = on the character creation screen to enable the option to make items sell for 0 gold because it makes all gold drops to be more valuable and you need to make less trips back to the town if you enable that option.
If you want a tutorial, you should watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM (and the part 2!)
Here are the official docs: https://angband.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ (you want to read "A Players’ Guide to Angband" and maybe "Playing the Game").
If you want to play on phone (not recommended for beginners!) you can find a port of Angband called "Angband (plus variants)" on Play Store (it has a custom keyboard that makes Angband relatively playable on mobile devices).
I'm also thinking about giving Nethack/Slash 'Em another go once I get more better at Angband. There is also Pathos Nethack for Android if you want to play while waiting for something. I also liked Dwarf Fortress, which is actually very different game. Be sure to grab the "Lazy Noob Pack" if you are on Windoze (maybe Wine or Proton supports it? I heard there is a similar thing for Linux called "LinuxDwarfPack") or install a tileset if you use vanilla DF: you can buy DF on Steam to get the official tileset or you can download Phoebus or IronHand tileset for free (installing a tileset is very easy!). There are Dwarf Fortress tutorials on YouTube and https://dwarffortresswiki.org/Quickstart_guide
I have added Demon, DoomRL, POWDER, CDDA, DCSS, Elona+ and Infra Arcana to my backlog.

Celeste is my favorite game ever. I'd recommend it.
Unspecified · 2024-05-05 08:08
My favourite games I recommend are:
- Some Mario games, like Super Mario 64, Super Paper Mario, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart DS
- Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie have a similar look and feel to SM64, plus plenty of British humour
- All the 'core' Viva Piñata games where you look after a garden in order to attract different species, entice them to reside, and romance. Still love those games; the classical-themed music helps the players to relax, while there's a whole cast of characters and plants to help or hinder your agricultural achievements
- The Binding of Isaac - I played the web demo of the original Flash game, but it's full of huge content once you get Rebirth and all the DLC's. Runs can be fun but challenging with more than 17 different characters, like with how Jacob and Esau work as a team, but Esau seems to act like Jacob's personal bodyguard in terms of how he can get easily hit by enemy attacks while letting Jacob walk around a 4x4, randomly-generated room on his own accord. That's from a lot of Reddit users playing the game.

Absolutely. AC 4, 5 and Zero are considered "the golden trilogy" and they are phenomenal games.
4 is pretty light on story while 5 has one of my favorite stories in video games. Zero is also fantastic and I love the FMV cutscenes and different squadrons you have to fight based on how you play. Ace Combat 7 is also a great game, even if the story feels like they stapled together several different stories into one that don't work together at all.
Do know that the gameplay is very arcade-y and doesn't care about realism at all. Great music, too.

my dream game is a dark dungeon crawler where the whole descent is a metaphor to a descent into your psyche and the dungeon and its moster a reflection of it kinda like silent hill
i mean some dungeon crawlers already have some of this since the maze is an archetype but still. king's field IV is one of the best ones i found yet even though it's not what i described, it makes me feel like there's certainly a side plot of the protagonist bringing the idea of evil in the deepest part of an ancient dungeon to "seek the dark".
I would love to get recs if similar games exist
