Touhou will probably be the last game I'll keep playing, since it doesn't takes too much time : after half an hour my fingers start hurting and I get pissed off.
At several points I was training pretty intensely, like an hour a day for several weeks, which is how I managed to beat on normal Scarlet Devil, Mountain of Faith and Subterranean Animism, my proudest achievement.
I usually play either EoSD or SA, as every other has some kind of gimmick that I dislike, while EoSD has none, and I actually like the gimmick of SA.
Touhou is a great serie of games, praise ZUN.
Also half the reason I started to learn japanese was to read untranslated works by the circle Musha Prune.

touhou is fuarrrking sick. to think that i got into it 10 years ago is just a peculiar feeling to me.
anyways i suck at the shmups but i like to play the doujin games if theyre any good. been thinking about getting into the hisouten but i just cant play anime fighters. maybe i should give it another go, isnt there supposed to be a new fighting entry or some soykaf.
also reisen is mai waifu and everyone is GAR for rinnosuke

I can't even remember how I got into touhou, it was at least 10 years ago, I was probably no more than 12 at the time.
I think the first doujin I read was that one where Reimu falls in love with Cirno ; but I was already aware of the existence of the franchise by then and had played a little bit.
At the time, the computer I used was slow that the game ran at around ~50% of the normal speed ; but the keyboard was pretty old and didn't let me move in diagonal when shooting and focused (too many keys pressed at the same time), which balanced the difficulty a bit.

I love touhou almost religiously, not once in my life have I seen a single guy create his own universe of cute little girls wearing silly hats that attracted and entranced so many fans at once as I have with touhou. ZUN basically fueled the early comikets with his creations + derivatives thereof and later caused the creation of a massive doujin event perhaps comparable to the likes of M3 and dedicated only to touhou related stuff, reitaisai. Very rightly so, if you indulge yourself in the many printworks and delve deep into the lore by ZUN, you start to see how much consideration goes into his every characters, settings, places, incidents, basically his own universe. His work is not just arbitrarily constructed, he bases most of his work on established concepts of several religions and incorporates many (but not limited to) Japanese traditions and beliefs. Even the amount of though that goes into the process of choosing a name for a character and his sheer ingenuity overall makes me believe this is the ultimate fictitious universe to be a fan of. I might just be drunk on fandom but nothing will ever take the place touhou has in my heart.

for everyone with too much time on their hands, you can rank ALL of the touhou characters with a character sorting on https://tohosort.frelia.my/ (and the same with 2hu songs on https://relick.me/song/ this one took me about 4 hours! proceed with caution). We could make a 2hu sorter thread if lainchan so desires.

if you want to play 2hu fighters somewhat competitively hisoutensoku is the most popular one around, it's balance is good enough and it actually requires skill. There was a huge community over at #hisoutensoku on irc.rizon.net but they migrated to discord. They pretty much obsess playing hisoutensoku and create discussion and community events around it (podcasts, tournaments, you name it). I recommend you check out https://www.twitch.tv/tessiro/videos/all or https://hooktube.com/results?search_query=tessiro to get an idea what the community revolving around an anime fighter is like, in my opinion it is extremely comfy.
If you were diehard about old school you could try getting into touhou 7.5 immaterial and missing power, but I doubt you will find many people willing to play with you. 10.5 scarlet weather rapsody (hisouten) is mostly abandoned in favor of 12.3 hisoutensoku. There are more recent fighters but the mechanics of the game were changed up completely, 13.5, 14.5 and 15.5. They're all floating fighters and were simplified with mostly dial a based combos and no complex skill inputs (you don't d236 or DP anymore) but they look much more modern and anime centric. 15.5 is even more special as it the first touhou tag fighter were you can switch between a master/slave during combat and even during combos, but 15.5 mechanics apart from tag fighting remain mostly unchanged from 14.5, so you can get into 14.5/15.5 if you prefer the modern fighters.
I recommend you give them all a try and see for yourself, there is enough casual players out there so starting off should not be too difficult. In case you choose hisoutensoku, here is an excellent resource to start with https://hisouten.koumakan.jp/wiki/Touhou_Hisoutensoku_Wiki
happy fighting lain

I've really been enjoying PCB, I haven't tried the others besides Soku though. I've been struggling to beat stage 5 on normal for some time now. I opted to not try easy mode at all, and I don't use continues (I like to save replays and see where I messed up).

Every other danmaku that I've tried has boring patterns and relies more on fast reflexes than strategy.
The only exception is this one, if it can help you see what I mean :

It's funny, I'm the opposite. I like the games and the music, but I can never tell what the heck is going on in the story, let alone understand the characters or the lore. I also suck at the games but still find them fun. I play on lunatic because I'm a tryhard and I can never get past the third or fourth level. Still, the feeling when you finally grok a pattern after a few hundred tries is nice, so is whistling along to the BGM.

Most of the canon comes from the various official books rather than from the games. And you can just read the dialogues of those on the wiki if you care about that.
But for me the most interesting part is to see how the characters are reinterpreted in the fan works.

I really like something about the 2hu community.
They are these neet-ish comfy people who take it easy. They make their music, their drawings, their funny flash videos and their communities. They are the people who run public directories with terabytes of content on apache 2.2.2 on debian oldstable because it works and that's okay. They abandoned a blogspot blog 4-5-10 years ago but it still kinda works.
I imagine that IRL they would go out to some hidden forest near their hometown and build some contraption that unlocks great fun but with the most crude parts; it would be barely held together by duct tape, but there would be a little sign posted with "hidden forest fun machine" and a short howto on how to use it. It's like a slight introverted autism, touhou fans live reality as it it was a sandbox game (e.g. minecraft) and they can build around respecting the principles without really understanding or giving many fuarrrks about them.

My direct experience has consistently been that they'd be more likely to build a concentration camp. The only thing they're concerned about is persecuting "secondaries," even as they themselves hold the series in contempt and probably don't even play it.

Yuuka or Sanae, can't decide ^_^
I got into touhou by listening to a necrofantasia arrange in a youtube playlist back in 2013, and I have been in love with the series ever since. I am quite good at the games, but the recent ones don't really appeal to me. I tried playing violet detector and it was a real drag, while hidden star in four seasons was lacking in interesting bullet patterns. I really hope the next game that comes out is more fun, but I don't think the series will die either way. I am looking forward to fantastic danmaku festival's pcb chapter.

Used to be absolutely obsessed for years. Now it's way toned down, but it will forever be my favorite franchise above all else. Developed a lot of skills because of the games and its fanbase, and has majorly contributed to what I am today.

Sakuya. Even though she's considered basic-tier, she's always been my favorite.
>>685
Sounds similar to me, I also got into it young with 6 and the game only ran at 50% fps. Didn't know any better at the time, and when I saw gameplay at the actual speed I was convinced the game was impossible. Then two years later I 1ccd 6, 7 and 8 for the first time in succession at regular speed and felt so proud.
>>1479
I get what you're saying but I think the average fan is more likely to just fantasize about being a cool weirdo in the woods than actually be one. It is very comfy though. Too bad the forums seem to be dying/dead, but at least there are active boards.

Koumakyou is the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, or simply touhou 6. I guess you play the Scarlet Weather Rhapsody?
I've probably spent waaaay to much with the games, the music and the characters. But I just can't quit!
Crazy Jake · 2019-06-30 17:26
Touhou is overrated, yes i said it, and i am ok with that.
But the game is awesome and fun to play, i really don't like modern touhou games, but i extremely enjoy the classic era.
Best ones are "Embodiment of Scarlet devil", "Perfect cherry blossom", and "Imperishable Night". These are the only ones i played, everything after touhou 9 for me is unplayable.
All characters (except rinnosuke) are perfect. Reisen or Tewi are the best girls.

Interactive Banjo Management · 2019-09-11 09:13
> Do you like Touhou?
Disclaimer: I've never actually beaten any of the mainline shmup games on normal difficulty (though I have made the attempt on a few occasions), but the series is really interesting, and the fan and doujin scene is really inspiring - the kind of things that come out of it can be really impressive. Also the character designs and music stand very well on their own strengths even before fandom comes into the picture.
> Which is your favorite game?
Of the mainline Shmups, probably UFO. But fighting game-wise, I'd probably say on balance Hopeless Masquerade, because it did some really interesting things with its mechanics that struck me as reasonably inventive and an evolution of some of the concepts seen in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody/Hisoutensoku.
> Which is your favorite 2hu
Probably actually Marisa; she's extremely hardworking and driven and is probably the single strongest human who doesn't have the OP Miko powers that Reimu does, and her personality has a ton of charm to it.
In the interests of being slightly less basic though, I'm going to settle on Byakuren, who's my second favourite. There's a certain allure to Buddhist Youkai Jesus. Plus her powers are super cool, and I like her moveset in the fighting games.
Boomie · 2019-10-26 03:45
this follows me everywhere, but my favorite 2hu has gotta be Medicine.
Judge Fang · 2019-12-08 15:10
It was Fall of 2014, saw a friend post Night of Nights on Skype, l loved the style of the song, the smug maid with the knives at hand. I had to look it up. I wanted to start with th1, but that didn't get me far. A friend got interested at that time as well, and we decided to pick up the mainline games. From that point on, touhou became one of my favorite franchises. Challenging shmups, interestingh main(and fan) stories, entrancing music, it had it all.

I discovered touhou through its music with ytpmv and mads, i remember being quite surprised when i realized many of the music featured in those came from it.
I really liked touhou 8 but mostly because it was the only one easy enough i could get to the last stage, otherwise i dont really like those kind of games but i dont think many people who enjoy touhou actually play much of the game.
When it come to my favorite i guess i'll have to go with marisa since its one of the first 2hu i saw and really liked her character and style.

EoSD easily. Mainly due to nostalgia. I remember hearing the music on youtube around 2008 and the OST clicked with me instantly when I rediscovered it. Haven’t played the game much but the artwork and soundtrack are brilliant.
