For a while I've been looking for Windows 95/98 era Japanese PC games. I figured with how many there were on the PC8801 and 9801 surely some Jdevs would have carried over into the new era of PC's. Surprisingly I've found next to nothing. Almost everything is a visual novel, and the only Win98 compatible games I've found like Card Hunter Sakura 2 and Azumanga fighter were made at the beginning of the XP era. What the hell happened in Japan? Did they suddenly decide that PC gaming is like kicking dead whales down the beach and ignored it for a couple generations? I know some people made SHMUPS for Windows 95/98, but why only that?

PC-98 were discontinued only in 2003, by then XP had replaced 98.
It would make sense that japanese devs kept away from windows as long as they could (nips are known for hating change), and thus never really used 98.

I find that very bizarre. Did the PC-98 have good internet browsers?

Welcome to Japan. The reason so many games from the era are on PC-98 was the large install base. A developer could target the base system and know that the game would run in any home that had a computer.
