Games on linux
Agent Richard Gill · 2017-06-17 13:10
Which games do you play on Linux, Lain? So far i haven't had many problems, Hearthstone, Heroes of the storm, Path of exile and The witcher 1 worked fine, but I've yet to try an MMO.
League of legends is the only game i couldn't play, their launcher doesn't work here.
So, which games do you play on linux? Share particular configurations and setups.
Mitnick · 2017-06-17 13:35
I only play Katawa Shoujo.
I'm not much of a gamer.

I play whatever game I please, thanks to the magic of wine.
Sipho Nkosi · 2017-06-17 14:36
Wesnoth, OpenTTD, Hedgewars and Teeworlds. All of them are FOSS.
John Doe · 2017-06-17 20:34
I play torchlight II and Pillars of Eternity, from GOG.
Chan Siu Ming · 2017-06-18 10:08
Roguelikes, Dwarf Fortress and Crusader Kings 2 mainly
Joey · 2017-06-18 10:28
How did you manage to run Heroes of the Storm? I couldn't get it running.
I play these native games on GNU/Linux: DotA2, CS:GO, Rocket League, factorio, minecraft, stepmania, and the occasional indie games from steam or humble.

I didn't do anything, just installed wine and hots was working. I might have installed other packages for other games, but for hots specifically i didn't do anything.

I'll never get rid of this weird feeling for using proprietary drivers and DRM, but I just love Steam. I have more than 1.300 hours on Team Fortress 2, but I also play some AAA games released for Linux.

I'm not much of a modern gamer, my last decent hardware - besides a laptop that struggles with Borderlands - was a PS2.
But I really love retro games, so I have a emulators running on this machine.
I have epsxe for PSX games, which is primarily to play through Policenauts, finish FFVI, and get an occasional Metal Slug/MMX fix in.
I also have dosbox set up with several text adventures and DOS games I loved when I was growing up.
This includes the original Zork trilogy as well as Return to Zork (one of my most cherished childhood games), as as A Mind Forever Voyaging, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, etc.
I have Uplink and Deus Ex on here, which are both high on my list - I've never played either and particularly want to get into Deus Ex - but haven't gotten around to installing WINE.
However, my semester just ended, and I have been thinking about starting a game...

In many cases, you should be able to get games to run by looking them up on wineHQ. It's also a great way to quickly check if a game you want to play will even run at all without spending time to get it to work.
Here's a page about hots:
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=32232
Right now I'm using wine-staging to only play the fallback version of osu! I've played through some games with wine-staging back in the day, for instance Max Payne and Max Payne 2.
I use wine-staging, because it has some additional options and it tries to make DirectX stuff run faster. Osu! runs at ~420 FPS on my machine now, and I couldn't hit even stable 120 FPS on windows.
Right now I'm mostly playing native games through Steam or just playing other native games, mostly stuff based on ioquake3 (openarena and q3 cpma).

The most recent Hitman game was ported to Linux. It makes you install Steam to play it which was fuarrrking annoying. Once it crashed and made me download the whole game again. Other than that it ran fine.

>Once it crashed and made me download the whole game again.
This is a big issue with Steam. It can't partially download things and it starts from the beginning if something goes wrong. I have to download games in one go, and I this was changed.
Also, some ports of games are broken, and it makes me sad. Ports of 2k games are notorious in this regard. I've gotten used to having to spend time getting games to work.
Some ports aren't fully featured. Retro City Rampage lacks some scaling options compared to the Windows version, and PAYDAY 2 had broken support for mod_overrides for a long time.
Last time I had to get a compatibility package with older versions of CURL and set environment variables to load the right version to play Devil Daggers.
Also, screen redrawing in Steam is trash. At times it can just become unresponsive and not redraw anything for good 30 seconds. I notice this much more, because I don't use a compositor. Automatic logging in is bad as well — at times it forgets my password and forces me to log in manually again. Sometimes it does that every time I launch Steam.

Guild Wars 2 works pretty well in WINE. The game seems to work flawlessly, though there are some minor graphical glitches. (Armor models don't change in fullscreen mode unless you alt+tab.)
Dozer · 2017-09-13 02:09
Stardew Valley
Tumblestone
Oblivion works ok in Wine
(My computer isn't the best spec-wise)

Runescape, EU4 and Warband.
If I have a friend I'll play Don't Starve or CS:GO
Hagbard Celine · 2017-11-03 02:08
Assault Cube, Xonotic, Oolite, and Minetest.
Unspecified · 2017-11-03 05:18
>What games do you play
Mostly Roguelikes, or Doom, but OpenRA is the soykaf, and I play older pc games, or playstation games quite a bit too.
I can't get C&C: Tiberian Sun to work properly under WINE, and that's been bumming me out quite a bit, because it's one of my favorite games of all time.
Chani · 2017-11-03 07:58

Tiberian sun is very nice.
I recently managed to get it to run myself on the laptop.
Have you tried the cncnet.org client?
You can play with it much better, also you might be able to play other games too with it.
Pris · 2017-11-03 08:36

I've tried that, I believe it might something to do with graphics, it lags really badly, but I'm not sure what it could be.
I've been looking at the progress on OpenRA's tiberian sun mod, but it looks like that'll never get done, so for now I'll just have to go tiberian sun-less for the foreseeable future, not a huge problem, just kind of is like kicking dead whales down the beach

Gaming on linux?
lol I think I got pinball to work on a pocket chip, once, after fuarrrking about with the aspect ratio for about an hour.
Emmanuel · 2017-11-26 01:04
While I generally boot into XP for games I have quite a few in Linux in case I do not feel like going into XP
LIke a few here, I emulate a lot of things although emulators are far less finicky in XP
DosBOX is great for really old stuff, same with ScummVM if you are into point-and-click adventures.
I have quite a few native games though:
OpenArena (Quake 3 clone)
Quake 3
Quake 2 (yamagi port)
QuakeWorld (ezquake)
Quake 1 (darkplaces and others)
Warsow
Xonotic
Nexuiz (runs better than Xonotic but unsupported)
Red Eclipse for casual pissing around
Alien Arena
Urban Terror (kinda a cs clone with more fun allowed)
Doom (zandronum, odamex, chocolate-doom, prboom+)
Strife: Veteran Edition (doom engine rpg-like)
Shadow Warrior Classic Redux
Half-Life and CS 1.6 (praise gaben)
Postal 1 and 2
What really annoys me is that there are very few serious driving/racing sims that run in Linux with modest requirements. SuperTuxKart is cute but too arcade-like and not very challenging. The rest I have found are more physics sandbox than driving sim. Old Papyrus and SimBin titles are the main reason I have no choice but to boot into XP. Wine does a very poor job of running anything I have tried in it despite whatever WineHQ says. What runs at all ends up plagued with performance issues, game breaking bugs, and outright crashing in many cases.

Have you tried torcs or speeddreams?
Also how come nobody linked to http://lgdb.org
Agent Richard Gill · 2017-11-27 06:57
disgusting renpy hgames, I love it
Chan Siu Ming · 2017-11-28 16:44

Torcs has broken controls and has been broken for years, Speed Dreams is just a fork so it is unlikely it will be any better. Not to mention Speed Dreams' Linux version for some dumb reason is Ubuntu only and is only officially distributed on PlayDeb.
kalo · 2017-11-28 18:00
zachtronics' games are great, as long as you like puzzles. The difficulty of the games does vary, so find what you like.
Chan Siu Ming · 2018-01-27 21:29
No one has played Don't Starve ?
It's a great roguelike/crafting/survival game, has quite many options and rich gameplay.
I also enjoyed KSP, but mostly the beginning, after that it gets a bit tiresome as everything takes so much time.
Joey · 2018-02-02 04:36
All of the games I want to play are older PC games that haven't been ported to GNU/Linux; it's a shame, though some of the ones I really like, such as Morrowind or Baldur's Gate, have source ports (OpenMW or GemRB, respectively), which I'd love to see for things like the Unreal Engine or the Dark Engine

Just finished with DDLC and loved how they handled the filesystem and even python exceptions as a mechanic/easter eggs. Have any recommendations of smutty renpy games?
Ivan Petrov · 2018-02-02 09:42
A lot of FTL and Hotline: Miami. I like to play some artgames every now and then, recently been having fun with Getting Over It (via wine).
Tyrell Wellick · 2018-02-02 10:16
No one mentioned VA-11 Hall-A (Vallhalla) yet? Check it out, it's cool.
Aside from that I recenty enjoyed Dwarf Fortress, it's in alpha and I had a lot of bugs.. but it seems to run fine for most people.
Hitomi · 2018-02-03 15:18
