Final Fantasy XII is one of my favorite games of all time. Not the most favorite, but definitely in the top five (I don't quite know which is my most favorite). What I loved was how there was an immense world to explore with many optional areas, as well as rare items. The combat system was a little odd, but one could get used to it.
The best thing about that game is how it feels just like an MMORPG, and yet isn't. I don't like most MMORPGs because I'm asocial and it often requires too much money, time, and internet connectivity, but I love the massive virtual worlds that they provide, as well as any liberal character customization. I suppose Skyrim is right up my alley but you need to have the PC version to have any serious mods, and my current laptop is not very powerful.
So, what games are similar to FFXII? Also, did you like the game as much as me, and were there any other games that you enjoyed just as much?

Ni No Kuni and latest Zelda comes to mind - both have extensive fantasy worlds that you can explore.
What I like about FFXII is that almost any area has a special unique vibe. Music adds a lot to this, for example music in the village of that plain tribe really sets the mood.

lol that's exactly the reason why I disliked it.
that aside, I disliked Xenoblade Chronicles for this very same reason, so I'd recommend you to try it.
Also emulate it with a soykafton of graphical improvements since the original game in the Wii looks awful.

Try Morrowind, if you've not already. The world seems so much bigger than Skyrim's.

Bummer. FFXII is one of my favorite games ever and I found FFXIV pretty similar to XII. Both have slow combat, monster hunts, massive scenarios, (somewhat) interesting story...
I'd suggest giving it a try since there's a free trial, you don't even have to interact with people that much so maybe you end up liking it.
