Anyone here play VNs? Pics related are the two I'm playing right now. I really liked the beginning of G-Senjou, but I'm a bit after the split from Shiratori's route and it's honestly gotten a bit dull, and honestly I think the novel isn't as edgy as it could be. Anyway, if anyone could recommend some good psychological/mystery/good VNs I would really appreciate it. I've already played SnU Thanks!
Unnamed · 2017-05-14 11:47
Not many i play(ed) a few and even work on one.
But many of those are too sexual/romantic or just animeish for me.
XERXES · 2017-05-14 14:25
I've only really played Puppy Love, and Anime, The Visual Novel. Both were pretty tongue in cheek.

>psychological/mystery
For psychological and mystery, I would suggest the nitro+ games, Steins;Gate and Chaos;Theory. I have seen many people bad mouth Chaos;Theory, but I never understood the dislike, maybe it's because I read it years and years ago, when I was first introduced to visual novels.
Steins;Gate is one of the few visual novels that has made me experience an 'emotional' rollercoaster effect, and funnily enough, Rewrite, although I haven't yet finished all the routes, is another one.
One other great mystery novel I like and would love to finish since I basically never did and afaik, there are many different endings to it, is Ever 17. Great mystery and mindfuckery to be had, I loved the characters and the absolutely isolated feeling that I got, it definitely managed to convey the sense of being stuck underwater, slowly starting to question more and more, including your sense of reality.

Steins;Gate is really good, seconded.

I played through chaos;head, and while I thought the plot was interesting, I thought it was poorly executed. I played a while ago so at this point I can't really remember what specifically I disliked.
Anyway, I watched the anime for Steins;Gate and while I thought it was cool, there were some plot holes that I didn't really like (I can't remember those either). Thanks for the rec though, I'll give those a try.
>>163
I've heard about it, but I would like to finish Higurashi before I play that. Also heard that it's very long.
Y.T · 2017-05-17 06:34
I need to re-read Morenatsu: I read only two routes, years ago, but there are more routes now.
Some day I'll also play Higurashi, and that one with the girl in the washing machine.
Gyula Kovacs · 2017-05-19 21:24
I don't play (read?) many visual novels, but I really like VA-11 HALL-A. Danganronpa is okay, a bit cheap at times.
Tank · 2017-05-22 15:59
>>196
VA-11 HALL-A has some nice character design, but the content is so vane and full of SJW I couldn't bear it. It could have been an awesome third-party sci-fi, instead it's a lesbian bartending sim with no character development (and no, that loli-"nurse" doesn't count, whatever any game review site writes) and no plot. Meh.
Sipho Nkosi · 2017-05-22 16:56

I don't remember the plot very well , but what is it that you found SJW in the story?
Boris Grishenko · 2017-05-22 17:41
>>214
Don't mind him, he's probably the kind of person who believes that any woman that acts out of his cliched mindset or any mention of gay people is a SJW move and they're trying to push a political agenda. The game's pretty fine, I loved the atmosphere and soundtrack.
Just another Random Lainon · 2017-05-22 18:44
>>212
Alright this is low quality b8 but I'll bite anyways, the story was absolutely not full of SJW pandering, the guys who made the game marketed it as a "cyberpunk waifu simulator" you interacted with a child sex robot and the guy that paid her for sex, there were cat-girls, the women talked about their boobs all the time. There was definitely an homage to 4chan and other imageboards. This was not a game that was designed for SJW's.

I bought it on itch.io when it was still a prototype and really liked it and now I own the full version, but I haven't played it because I can't get hyped up to play it as the main character is female. Feels bad man.

You're mostly right but I think SJWs should be OK with catgirls. If I say I'm a cat (or a girl (or both!)) no one should judge me.
Nobody important · 2017-05-25 20:56
OP here, I got a bit bored of G-Senjou so I decided to play through Higurashi. I'm on the 5th chapter right now, and I'm really enjoying it. I highly recommend if you haven't played before. Especially with the PS3 voices patch, and mangagamer picking up the series again, there's almost no reason not to play it.

I only played 999 for nds.
Oh, and a free ren'py VN from steam called Carpe Diem. I expected maximum trash but instead it really impressed me, considering that it is free and long about 5 minutes you should try it.

I have played some VNs. Just started Steins;Gate.
Tequila · 2017-06-20 05:21
Can anyone rec some old VNs? Like those with the pixel graphics and soykaf. I missed out on them, my first VN was YMK.

The first VN I ever played was an eroge, lol.
The game was Viper V16 Imagine. I was like 12 I guess and I decided that I wanted to get into CS so I could make video games when I stumbled onto that game.
The game was about this one dude who got into a college to develop their skills, and it was divided in Programming/Vidya Developing, Singing, Acting, and I think there was another one but I can't remember.
The thing is that I went for the route with a blue headed girl that wanted to be an actress. Spoilers ahead.
After fuarrrking her a couple of times and making stupid ass decisions, I couldn't find her anymore anywhere. After a couple of days, the main character recieves a letter in which she says that she left to act in a tv spot in germany.
I got the bad ending of her route and she literally broke my heart. I was completely devastated and I just couldn't keep playing the game.
I completely forgot the game existed till a couple of years ago, when browsing 4chin's /v/ in an eroge thread, where I asked if someone remembered the game. Some anons pointed me in the right direction and I got to play the game again. And I got the exact same fuarrrking ending.
I clearly didn't change a lot in 10 years.
Switch · 2017-09-27 22:05
428 is the mack daddy king of VNs. Lots of meat to it. Five concurrent, intertwining stories, 85 different bad ends, lots of variety. If you can read Japanese, I highly recommend picking it up. If not, it should be out in English some time next year (if they don't mess up the translation).
Dozer · 2017-09-27 23:13
I'm not generally one for anime or VNs or anything like that but I played Katawa Shoujo a couple months ago and it fuarrrking wrecked me emotionally for a solid week
it still does if I think about it too much
Joe Bloggs · 2017-09-28 16:24
Anyone else play Hatoful Boyfriend? I bought it as a joke a while back, and only played it through once, but I thought it was pretty funny if only because of it's silly premise. This thread has inspired me to go back and play it again to experience the other routes.

Play all the routes and the real story starts. Try not to spoil yourself and have fun!

I've never played any games in the series. I would like to get well acquainted with it, could you recommend me where would be the right place to start? Should it be the obvious assumption of going through the first game?
As for OP, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Saya no Uta. Highly suggest you check it out. My personal favorite.

>Should it be the obvious assumption of going through the first game?
Yep. The order is
>Danganronpa (VN)
>Danganronpa 2 (VN)
>Danganronpa Another Episode (VN/Third Person Shooter)
>Danganronpa 3 (Anime, 25 episodes)
>Danganronpa v3 (VN)

I found two really good bitter sweet ones on gamejolt.com
First one is called deiz and is a story about a guy being in love with a girl that is too hard to reach for him.
The other is called connected hearts and is about a guy trapped in a misterious dream.
I suggest you to look those up, i can only recommend those, even if youre not the vn fan im sure those will leave and impression.
Tank · 2017-11-03 21:25
I really enjoyed playing The Silver Case, directed by SUDA51 and released in 1999( it was remade). It's about a bunch of detectives trying to solve murders linked to a serial murderer that's been dead for a while. But it's still a SUDA51 game so expect some really weird soykaf.
The gameplay is really bad( the towers...), the amount of exposition in the first minutes of the game is completely insane( if relevant at all) and I still haven't completely understood what actually happened in the story, but the atmosphere is godlike and the characters very charming. Plus, it's a bit spooky.
I think that if you liked Lain, you might like this. It's definitely not for everyone though.
Dujour · 2017-12-03 19:59
Played Tsukihime, Saya no Uta, School Days (HQ), enjoyed them very much. Planning on buying Higurashi. I think I enjoy the eerie ones the best.
Trinity · 2017-12-04 11:06
playing higanbana no saku yoru ni right now, really like characters and atmosphere
i didn't play many vns as ones that are 10h+ have like 1% chance that i will actually finish them; i really enjoyed saya no uta, va-11, tantei club ii, ddlc
also i have massive backlog of vns
btw, do any of you vn-players think of making their own vn? i started writing my scritp some time ago and well... it would be easier to continue without doubting myself with every sentence

Of course. Rather than doubting myself, I write it down, read it the next morning and delete it immediately out of shame.

Do you have a recommendation on a good galge/dating sim to start with? I haven't played any "real" ones. I like lolis, but it's not a requirement.
H.R. Giger · 2017-12-30 22:50
I play a lot of VNs.
The three following games would be my recommendations, though none would be a good first experience with visual novels. I'll start with the negative aspects - at least from the perspective of the common player, the good ones, and then my recomendations regarding the game.
...
Muv L.uv Alternative :
The VN is built on some very annoying H.arem grounds. It's sometimes long too. So it's not for everyone. A thing important to mention is that the creators of the game are very right wing. I've seen a lot of p.ol fuarrrks here recently so I guess some people would like it, but it actually creates a very manipulative background to the game ; basically, as the creators admitted, it's meant to put you in the head of a common Japanese during WW2,
and legitimize some of this mindset.
But, it has some great moments, very strong emotionally, and it plays with many different themes. In my opinion, for a weeb, it's the ultimate kamige.
Contrarily to most people, I wouldn't advocate playing the first Muv L.uv before Alternative ; it's not worth it, and you don't need it to understand anything. Actually, I loved the feeling that everything happened very fast at the beginning of Alternative, since it exposes a lot at once.
...
Euphoria :
A very g.uro nukige. So it has a lot of s.cat, a lot of violence, and it's meant for s.adistic assholes. The first half of the game is 70% s.nuff s.ex. I mean go on vndb look at some screenshots.
Here too, there is a "but" ; the second half of the game displays a very interesting scenario, and there is "third half" most people don't care to play which is strangely critical, in metaphorical ways, of the very type of people who would normally enjoy this game. So if you try to actually play it to the end, it shows surprising layers of development.
Frankly, the nukige g.uro, the themes, the general coldness of the presentation, the sharp writing, the very s.adistic way the game plays with its typically sadistic public itself, it all makes for a great atmosphere.
But it's not for everyone of course. Maybe I could explain why I like the third part so much if someone is interested in spoilers...
...
Umeniko :
The artstyle takes some time to get used to. There is no interaction with the narrative ; it's a VN, but it's not a game. Though it's technically a "sound novel", the music can be annoying at various points ; and it's still necessary to the narration. It can be a bit slow.
Umeniko has a very unique bite. It's a very character driven VN - which in a way, that's been the "Japanese" style since the 90s, as Azuma argues. They all strangely enter your head as many-sided figures which relate in complex ways to each others. Incidently, Nemu Manaka of Euphoria is a Beatrice in the same way Lain kind of is a Rei. And the childish style of the visual artist of that game, though it's technically pretty bad, actually displays certain sense of characterization.
Contrarily to what most people say, it's not a "detective" game at all - or only if you've played the first part of it. But it *is* aimed at people who have a liking for "strategy"... And a very strange kind of strategy actually. I can't say much more without spoiling the game but it would keeps easily interested someone afraid of getting bored by just drama unfolding.

The Intellectual route (yeah, that's what it's called) is really depressing, but somehow works the best I think. Don't let the theme discourage you. Just try it.

I can recommend Saya no Uta and Chaos;Head. Check them out on vndb.org.
Stay away from the C;H anime though, it doesn't even begin to capture the atmosphere of the VN.
Also BlazBlue - Calamity Trigger is a cool hybrid of fighting game and visual novel. You can get it on steam. Highly recommended if you liked that StarTrek TNG episode where they're stuck in a time loop.
I also have fond memories of Ayakashi: https://youtu.be/Sn1hEkZ1G1o
Mainly because it was the very first thing I read when I started learning Japanese.
Objectively, it's a mediocre story with nice music, interesting monster and character designs, and good voice acting.
I have no idea if the VN ever got translated into English, but I did see an eng-sub version of the anime on YouTube.

I find it refreshing that right-wing pro-Japanese media even exists in Japan. Apart from very few exceptions like Blade Runner 2, just about everything Hollywood churns out is a disgusting pseudo-leftist Hebrew soykaffest filled to the brim with anti-European themes.
