Any lains that play Dwarf Fortress? Elves get out.
Technician · 2017-05-16 16:51
I've started a while ago, but i abandoned it due to the key commands and the menu navigation being confusing. Now it seems a little bit easier, So I might actually get past just making a world and doing jack soykaf after that

I've sort of tried it a few times, but I never really gave it a proper attempt. I think it's something you should sit down for, and that you should be prepared to put in some study before playing. Definitely planning on doing that sometime still.

>>174 >>175 Getting used to the menu is really the hardest part. The wiki is a fantastic reference if you can't figure something out.

The best game ever. I haven't played it a while but i remeber I had a lot of fun with it. It allows you to build almost anything you can imagine but you should enable full autist mode before. Perfectly symetrical plans and layouts in various shapes gave me so much fun. However I admit it's a little bit hard to start it and get through the mechanics and interface. It's also nice to have a friend who plays it because it's not that good if you don't have anyone to brag about your builds

>>185 Fractals and dwarfcubes got tiring for me I found it more fun having an asymmetric mess of a fort that I'd expand as I go all on one level, or building on the surface, especially when it came to things like setting up plumbing The game's got some pretty big problems though, most notably that once you're past the initial learning cliff, it's very easy, to the point where it feels like you have to actively make challenge for yourself

>>135 I really like this game, but own a really soykafty laptop, so playing it's almost impossible, pretty frustrating

>>135 This is one of the few games that I still play, and even after a year of playing it on and off I still learn new stuff in it. But as soon as my game hits <25fps I just stop playing. Wish the game was slightly more efficient in that sense..

>>191 There's a text only mode. In fact, that's the default. Should run on a toaster.

>>200 Lolno. Toady has a hard time optimizing so after a certain point the game lags a ton and heats your computer. In fact it wasn't even a year ago that he released a 64-bit version.
Mitnick · 2017-05-20 19:21
>>200 Yeah, the ASCII, but it's still a lot for my processor

>>175 There are plenty of youtube tutorials for DF. Check some out at one point, I remember one really helped me when I was first getting into the game.

I frequently play it and drop it. When I get a large amount of dwarves and something bad happens I tend to just give up even if it can be fixed. Its so stressful.

>>203 >>202 >>200 Yeah it runs like crap to be honest. On my old laptop with an AMD quad-core, 8gb RAM etc. it still made the damn thing +90C and ran slow too. On my AMD FX gentoo machine it runs like a dream though, a shame it isn't what you'd call a successful design since it obviously has lots of bottlenecks in the code. But keep in mind the programmer is a math PhD and not a CS guy to begin with.

This screenshot captures one of the greatest moments in the history of Staffclinches. A titan had gotten into the front hall of the fort and was slaughtering every dwarf it met. After about 50 casualties one of the nice human visitors decided to help out. The titan died after getting shot twice. I'm sure my dwarfs helped soften it up. After this setback Staffclinches moved on to become my most prosperous fort. Magma pump stack, steel and gold industry, masterwork coffins lining every dorm hall. Then DF 40.01 came out and I wanted to start fresh. Made a couple small forts since then but haven't gotten far in any of them. Should get back on my latest attempt. >>188 This is true. The game has lots of interesting ways to screw you over, but almost all of them are mitigated with some drawbridge gates and traps. >>338 DF has interesting hardware demands. It has no multithreading so you want fast single-core performance. It also doesn't use a huge amount of RAM but it does a lot of RAM access every frame so it's most important that your memory is fast rather than large.

Never understood all the trouble people had with the menu, I didn't have any problems at all getting into it when I first started playing, just used the wiki to answer any questions I had. I love dwarf fortress but I do admit ever since the adventure mode overhaul update it's felt a bit off. I don't know how to describe it, almost like it feels less stable, more fragile. The quest system hasn't really been so great in years now. Fortress mode seems way too easy now, starvation isn't a problem, raids seem to take way longer to come, etc. I still love dwarf fortress, but I quit a fort due to boredom or FPS death way more often than any other reason. I usually quit from boredom and then every few months boot it up and binge all day/weekend dorfing

If any of you are in situations where you can ssh into a nice computer with a lot of memory, you can install df_linux on the computer and change [PRINT_MODE:2D] to [PRINT-MODE:TEXT] in data/init/init.txt to have it run in the terminal. The only problem I've had is Shift not working. Just make sure you run it in tmux so you don't lose progress if you lose connection.

>>135 I got into it a while back after a friend introduced me to it and ended up binging on it for a while. Haven't played recently but this thread might motivate me to get back into it again. Would any other lains be interested in a round robin map where we pass off control ever season / year? I've read about them before and they always seem kinda neat.
