Free Software Games

Pulse · 2017-04-16 22:15
I'll recreate my thread from the old /cult/. This is a thread to collect and discuss Free Software games. Preferably, the games should also have free assets and so be entirely freely available. It was an issue with the old thread for people to list off many games with barely a sentence accompanying them, if that. With this thread, prefer to spend an entire post detailing a single game and why you find it fun and whatnot; assume the reader is entirely unfamiliar with it; include screenshots. This is also not a thread for organizing events for games, as that interferes with the primary purpose of introducing new and interesting games to people. In particular, here are some qualities you may find value in describing: Is the game easy to install? Is it easy to configure? Is the game finished? If not, how much is playable currently? What input types are available? What genre is the game? Is the game easy to modify? Would you want to? It would be better to discuss a small number of games very well than merely create a dumping ground for lists. Try to focus on games you don't believe others would be particularly familiar with already. The games mentioned in these opening images are examples of Free Software games; feel free to discuss them in detail below.

I'll start with the same game I used last time, Hexoshi. It's made significant progress since the last time. It's a game in the same vein as the Metroid series, but I believe it refines the formula to a simpler core. As an example, it's taken for granted in Metroid games that aliens will leave energy and ammunition in the wake of their death, but Hexoshi has this as an optional upgrade to the player that can then be skipped for increased difficulty if desired. The ability to curl into a ball is present, but rather than leave bombs, it shoots spikes out for a moment as its defensive measure, which I find much more appealing in many ways. As of now, the first area to the game, now named Iridia, is finished. The game prevents players from progressing to unfinished rooms by pushing back when entry is attempted or, in the case of the first area, merely not providing the player with the item needed to access the newer areas. Some changes have invalidated older save files now, but this isn't so bad when considering the length of the game so far. These changes did improve physics and performance and whatnot. The game works very well with a separate controller and has a menu for configuring this, meaning it's no pain at all. The game itself is particularly easy to install, as it's simply a Python script, supporting 2 and 3. I've no experience with Python, but also had no issue setting things up. It's important to note that systems with different newline conventions will have issues with the script as provided, but this is also simple to fix if it becomes an issue. With all of this written, Hexoshi is a very good game and I only look forward to its future developments. It's ongoing and the fun in contributing to a game such as this is also quite rewarding in itself.

I'll post about Bernd and the Mystery of Unteralterbach. This is a Free (Libre and Gratis) erotic western visual novel. It is made by some Germans from a German imageboard. Not many western made visual novels are good, but I enjoyed this one alot. It plays like any other visual novel, but has some "puzzle" segments at some points. I fount it very humorous, and the erotic scenes very arousing. Url to download the game (source is at the bottom) http://unteralterbach.net/ (keep in mind this has erotic scenes with loli (2d ofc) content, so in your nation it may be illegal to view)

>>147 *I found it I will also answer some questions from op 1) Is the game easy to install? Is it easy to configure? I found it very easy to install and play, and not much configuration can be done (just the usual vn ones) 2) Is the game finished? If not, how much is playable currently? Yes the game is 100% complete. 3) What input types are available? Mouse and keyboard shortcuts. 4) What genre is the game? Erotic visual novel 5) Is the game easy to modify? Would you want to? I don't know, I have not looked at the source. Personally I would not modify this game at all. If I wanted to make my own vn, I would use renpy.

Kernel Panic is a game about computers. Systems, Hackers and Networks wage war in a matrix of DOOM! The only constraints are time and space; unlike other real time strategy games, no resource economy exists in KP. All units are free in this game, every factory built will be spamming units at all times. You can build more factories, but only on pre-defined areas (geothermal vents). All that remains is pure strategy and tactics. KP makes for a frantically fast-paced, action-oriented game, with a very unique graphical style. https://springrts.com/wiki/Kernel_Panic

As I'm typing this the whole group is just rolling up and back down the ramp trying to figure out how to get to the flat area in the middle.

Spring:1944 3.00 "Operation Frühlingserwachen" released! Spring: 1944 is a free, open source WWII themed 3D multiplayer game based on the libre SpringRTS Engine. Our goal is to create a game that is as realistic as possible while still being fun and accessible to play. Games on average take 40 minutes and feature up to 8 factions battling to the last man standing. All factions are complete with several types of infantry, towed and self-propelled guns, normal and rocket artillery, tanks, aircraft and boats. The game supports big matches with thousands of units and double digit player counts. A new version of Spring:1944 was released. This one is numbered 3.00 with codename Operation Frühlingserwachen and is based on the SpringRTS 103 engine. Operation Frühlingserwachen or "Spring Awakening" was a combined German and Hungarian counterattack in march of 1945 against the advancing Soviet troops near Lake Balaton [1]. Major changes since Spring:1944 2.0 "Operation Overlord" include: >Two completely new sides: Hungary has been added to the axis factions and Sweden is available for those who would rather not pick sides in this war. Both factions are complete with their infantry, vehicles, towed guns, mobile and rocket artillery, aircraft, boats, tanks and more. >An "in-game" faction picker widget. It is now possible to pick your faction when choosing the starting position >A preview version of a new AI called spammer was added to assist the C.R.A.I.G. AI in training you for multiplayer games. This one will throw units at your at breakneck pace from a big and scary Flakturm. Can you hold your ground against it? Install the game and find out! >Some units have received a graphics makeover in the form of new models and new skins. Build menu pictures have also been updated. >For those who have new graphics cards a new graphics makeover has been added in the form of SSAO, color correction and Cook-Torrance specular shader. >There are new units available for the 6 other factions: US: M36 Jackson tank destroyer JPN: Type 5 heavy tank destroyer (Na-To) JPN: Busou Daihatsu Artillery Craft JPN: JPNT14 torpedo boat All: Scout cars have been added All: long range guns (longer range howitzers) >A new match option called Spoils of War has been added, which spawns 1940 era French armor at flags. The first one to capture the flag gets it, hurry up! >Flags now display their value. As always, flags give you income with which you can build units and increase in value over time. >And ofcourse many many bugfixes. GET IT HERE: https://github.com/spring1944/spring1944/blob/master/README.md

I want to bump this thread because I have some questions about how one will go about making a libre game. How would the audiovisual development go? How could the game archive a cohesive art direction? How could the project avoid feature creep and guarantee the important features get priority? Also what way are there to make a little bit of money to pay more permanent devs?
Unnamed · 2017-12-01 10:46
>>629 There are more suitable threads for this i think, if there isnt you should create one. But its good you bumped this. Ive been gamedeving for quite some time, frankly i cant give you answers to these questions. I think its more of a thing of individual artists finding their style and sticking with it. I think its just a matter of having a idea what you want to do and then do it, if you are looking for engines and tools, there are plenty around and i can suggest some for you if you need them.

>>631 >How is making free software games not relevant to a thread about free software games? This thread is mostly for shareing/promoting and discussing individual games. A thread for making games is floating around somewhere i think, if not it might be a better idea to make one. That way we can keep this thread for sharing and the other for making games and such. >I'm aware there are many tools online for a person to make a game but my concern is how can a project where people can contribute openly be coördinated. So far from my observations is that almost any foss game just has a leader who calls the shots and usually people with similar ideas and join it and then it naturally evolves somehow. Engine development usually has comitees and such, but thats quite a different manner. Foss, or indie games in general are often either somewhat artistic or remakes of things. Its not often that you see a dedicated design process in those, mostly its the main guy merging pull requests from third parties.

Assault Cube is a free as in gratis FPS game based on the Cube engine published under a zlib-like open source license. It's written in C/C++, highly moddable trough "CubeScript", custom skins and maps. AC is available on all three main platforms and has matured alot since its initial release in 2006 and is still being worked on, although development has reached maintenance mode with updates mainly consisting of bug fixes and sometimes minor features. Configuration is pretty straight forward. Options are accessible at the main menu(ESC). Main Page: https://assault.cubers.net Source: https://github.com/assaultcube/AC Documentation: https://assault.cubers.net/docs/ Unfortunately, Assault Cube is a hotbed of people using it as training grounds to learn game hacking. Cheaters are to be expected in multiplayer. Otherwise its a great game if you like sped up CS 1.6 clones.

That scrot of pmars really threw me back, so in honor of corewars I dug out an old pasta you might enjoy. Corewars is one of the most cyp games ever: >What is corewars? Basically you write programs in Redcode, which is RISC assembly with stuff like multithreading and relative addressing. Your warrior (code) is then loaded into the core (VM, e.g. pmars) and has to compete with another warrior to make it terminate itself (you usually do this by modifying their code, jump addresses etc). You warrior fights against multiple other warriors to eventually be rated and get a rank on the hill (if it's good enough) to push another off. Get the first rank to become king of the hill until you're pushed off. >Nice, how can I get started? Learn redcode, there's the '88 standard and the '94 draft with some cool features which is the de-facto standard. It's reference implementation is pmars. Here's a beginners guide to '94: http://vyznev.net/corewar/guide.html Here's a reference: http://www.koth.org/info/pmars-redcode-94.txt For some advanced reading try http://www.infionline.net/~wtnewton/corewar/chapter1.html and http://www.infionline.net/~wtnewton/corewar/chapter2.html or http://www.corewars.org/docs/tips.html You can test your warriors in pmars >pMARS pMARS is the reference implementation of the '94 draft, you can get it on http://www.koth.org/pmars/ It's open source and comes for all major operating systems, most have it in their package manager, or you can compile the source yourself. You can use it to have warriors fight each other (usually you do multiple battles with randomized starting positions in the core). If you call it with the -k option it compiles your warriors into koth format (which you need to send a warrior to a hill). It also features the cbd debugger, you can either enter it during a battle or by supplying the -e option. >cbd use "help" to get a list of commands. "step" executes a single command and outputs the next command. Supply it with an integer to execute more than one command (e.g. "step 3" does three commands). "list" allows you to look at core addresses, "list 5" looks at the 5th command. You can also supply ranges like "list 0,100" to list a range of addresses. It also supports relative addressing (remember, all addresses are relative). Say you want to check what's at address two: (cdb) list 2 00002 SNE.X $ -102, $ -102 (cdb) Now where does -102 point to? Check it like this: (cdb) list 2-102 07900 (cdb) (i.e. we subtract 102 from 2 and end up in 8000+2-102=7900, which is empty) You can also set traces with "trace". Use something like "trace 5" to put a trace on 5, then issue "go" to have pMARS run until just before the next execution of the command at address 5. >So what's a paper or bomber? There's many strategies for corewar warriors. The most popular ones are named stone / paper / scissors as they tend to beat each other much like in the popular game. Check out http://corewar.co.uk/strategy.htm >I wrote my warrior, where do I upload it? Usually you upload your warrior by sending an email to a hill. There's several hills with various rulesets. Try http://www.koth.org/koth.html http://users.obs.carnegiescience.edu/birk/COREWAR/koenigstuhl.html http://sal.discontinuity.info/ >What kind of hill should I choose? Imho '88 hills are boring, no multithreading and the lack of pspace mean your warriors are somewhat simple minded. Regular hills limit your warrior size to 100 instructions, which is a lot and easy to get lost into. For beginners I recommend to use a smaller hill like tiny or nano. Nano limits your warrior to 5 instructions, so you have a good chance of understanding what's happening. However nano hills are usually dominated by evolved warriors, so warriors created by hand don't stand much of a chance. Tiny limits you to 20 instructions, there's still some evolved warriors around but considerably less and they're not as dominant as on the nano hills. Also this allows more elaborate warriors such as vampires. You might also be interested in the beginner hill on http://sal.discontinuity.info/hill.php?key=94b To participate, register and then send an email with your warrior to koth@corewar.info in the following format: ;redcode-94b ;name my_super_warrior ;author based_anon ;strategy glory_to_8chan ORG START START NOP.F $ 0, $ 0 NOP.F $ 0, $ 0 NOP.F $ 0, $ 0 NOP.F $ 0, $ 0 NOP.F $ 0, $ 0 NOP.F $ 0, $ 0 JMP.B $ -6, $ 0 end (obviously you have to replace stuff, the first line tells you which hill the warrior goes to, also remember to compile your warrior first). See http://sal.discontinuity.info/help.html for more info on the email format. In case you're wondering how the ranking is calculated check out http://inversed.ru/CoreWar.htm >More links http://www.koth.org/links.html http://users.obs.carnegiescience.edu/birk/COREWAR/ http://corewar.co.uk/guides.htm http://www.corewar.info/beginner.htm http://www.infionline.net/~wtnewton/corewar/ http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~anton/cw/corewar-faq.html http://corewar.co.uk/scanner.htm http://corewar.co.uk/tw/tw05.txt

You can have a good amount of fun just playing with games Emacs comes with. I recently started playing Dunnet again and just looked at the source code the two times I got stuck, but I shortly thereafter died anyway. Once you get past the first part, it picks up a bit, I think. There's also a decent tetris and M-x doctor is good for wasting a few minutes. There's even more games I haven't mentioned, but these are the biggest three. There's also more you can download from the repositories. There's a good 2048 written for Emacs I would occasionally play.

For visual novels, I would say Trick And Treat which involves having to get all other endings before getting the true ending. I would also recommend the Strange Man series (Crooked Man, Sand Man, Boogie Man, Hanged man) which is suppose to be played in the order listed. There are paid versions on Steam which I got for convenience sake. I will say that the original Doom and Doom 2 are now freeware and I think possibly the original Quake. You can get the GZDoom mod to incorporate keyboard and mouse combo controls without doing much of anything and GZDoom also works with Heretic and Hexen. Also, the game Paladins is pretty good despite the reputation thrown at it excusing it of being an Overwatch knockoff.

I see that no one mentioned "Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead". https://cataclysmdda.org/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataclysm%3A_Dark_Days_Ahead https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA The game is now officially in the repo of all major distros, though I haven't tested if that's actually the case or not. When I played the game (a year or perhaps two years ago) I had to build it from source. The game falls in the zombie survival roguelike category. The gameplay is quite straightforward (or at least it was when I've played it), you should try to survive as long as possible before being devoured by zombies/dying of heat/dying of dirty toilet water etc. The part where the game really shines is the character and scenario selection. The choices in character/scenario creation can range from a naked homeless person who is also a psychopath to a refugee muslim who has +2 ability in speaking for some reason which is > than rabbi or priest. I've also forgot to mention that the game has vim like keybinding which was somewhat of a hurdle to get into. If you can't be arsed to sink some time in character/scenario creation you can always just hit "Play [N]ow" in the main menu which will generate everything randomly.

>>2826 I love Cataclysm. But if someone wants to play it, be aware, it is so fuarrrking comfy and addicting, i wasted so much time playing it. I can't think of a more immersive game than CDDA. I remember writing stories about my characters in between playing sessions about their adventures. There is so many items and stuff to learn. Once you get good at it, you can decrease the rate at which items spawn and increase zombie health/spawn rate in new world creation menu. This will keep things interesting and challenging. Otherwise you turn into a god quicky if you know what you are doing. >When I played the game (a year or perhaps two years ago) I had to build it from source The best place to start is probably stable version 0.D. Current git version can be really buggy, i remember playing with a bug that spawned like 100x more monsters that it should. >I've also forgot to mention that the game has vim like keybinding which was somewhat of a hurdle to get into. I know, I'll make a better query: ["list of" eternal daughter cave story super mario forever] to see what site shows up that isn't gay. >no luck >wiki list of platformers showing up >add yume nikki >get spammed with yume nikki fan sites instead of actual lists you know what *quotes everything individually* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_freeware_video_games I give up at that though super mario forever isn't listed, I guess maybe I'm expecting too much for a 'complete' list. At least mari0 is there. *checks and it isn't* Gay soykaf. It's in the other link though. Someone needs to combine the three. Anyway, other than touhou fanmade games and swf games, I liked super mario forever (the older one(s), eternal daughter, cave story, yume nikki, etc. I don't know which I should talk about with lains though. I'd just expect a giant list to be posted though I can't find one that looks good. If I want to be really sad I'll attempt to find a list of swf games that's good. Laughable to attempt. I'll not bother. I don't even have any swf saved even though I have the flash player installed. I tried to find my fav flash games and failed a couple years ago. >>629 >>a little bit of money to pay more permanent devs >aka how can I make non-free games >>631 >>How is making free software games not relevant to a thread about free software games? hmmmmmmm

>>1566 >>3286 freeware =/= free software >>3581 >doesnt removing drm also allow you to fuarrrk around with the code usually? I guess if you're an expert at reverse engineering compiled code then sure, but that's not really what DRM prevents in the first place. The FSF defines source code access as a prerequisite to freedom 1 anyway. Also, pay attention to the wording at the bottom of pic related. Even if you're able to take those rights by force, so to speak, nonfree software still doesn't give you those rights. Just because it's possible to break out of jail, that doesn't mean prisoners are free to leave.

GemRB is an open-source implementation of the Infinity Engine, used in BioWare and Black Isle's 90s cRPG classics like Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate series. Super easy to configure, playing PST on my Vita of all consoles right now at native res with widescreen support.

>>3580 I have only played online for a few days but can recommend Xonotic. Community is great and willing to teach and help. Even on 300+ lag I had a fun time! There is a useful tutorial page on their website explaining how to git gud and offline play is pretty fun with many difficulty modes. >Is the game easy to install? Is it easy to configure? No installation required, .zip file has the executables/shell script. "Linux, Windows and Mac", "Xonotic can be run on other platforms if you compile the included DarkPlaces engine source code yourself." I had no issues setting options in-game and there are many of them. >Is the game finished? If not, how much is playable currently? I say yes. It feels finished enough to me. Latest release is 0.8.2 (2017), latest commit 3 months ago but I can't see any gameplay changes this year. >What input types are available? I think only keyboard/mouse (can rebind in-game). >What genre is the game? Arena FPS (inspired by Unreal Tournament, Quake) >Is the game easy to modify? Would you want to? Unknown. People create custom maps with NewRadiant. I know someone made a Pony models mod and I recall a vore mod and a fork game called ChaosEsque Anthrology, so it's probably not too hard. There are many in-game modifiers (e.g. different weapons, jetpack/grapple hook, instagib)

idk if this is exactly free software, but Sonic Robo Blast 2 and it's Kart spinoff are some good soykaf. They're based off a heavily-modded version of the Doom engine SRB2 Kart is quite different in controls from other kart racers, but once you get the hang of it it's helluva good time. Rigs of rods is a game that needs more coverage. It is a vehicle simulator with soft body physics, it has cars and trucks of all shapes and sizes, trains too and even aircraft. https://www.rigsofrods.org/ The downside is you have to download and place content in the game manually.

Ender · 2020-11-18 00:19
>>3737 >Ion Fury I don't get why people suck this game off so much. Don't get me wrong, I understand that it's well made in the sense that the sprite work is really good and the gameplay is quite alright, but it doesn't have any of the charm that made those old build engine games it's trying to imitate remarkable. They just picked the most boring bare bones sci fi theme they could possibly go for and don't take any risks with it. None of the weapons stand out in the way that Duke's shrinker or Blood's flare gun do, even the most "different" one is extremely conventional in comparison. All the enemies are generic cyberpunk fantasy tropes that could be from any other IP in the genre, lacking any of that same kind of memorability that a pig cop has. The protagonist doesn't have any of the edginess that made Duke or Caleb amusing to listen to, she's just "le BADASS female action hero" and her lines are cringey as fuarrrk, like a no-name brand Duke without any of the zest (which is exactly what she is). What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't have a sliver of the identity that the older build games did despite being OK playability wise. The lacking stylistic choice makes it feel exactly like any other "retro shooter" from the 2010s despite playing better, failing to realize that character is what allowed Duke to succeed in the face of technically superior games like Quake and recreating none of that here. Plus voidpoint is gay as fuarrrk in that they complain about people using sprites from their games in free Doom wads.

>>3800 It's edgy for today's standards. https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-08-26-ion-fury-to-retain-homophobia-in-game-after-all
Elliot Alderson · 2020-11-18 03:43
>>3806 This is why "retro shooters" will never live up to their own standard. The entire 90s FPS genre was deliberately advertised on shock value and reveled in the infamy granted to games like Doom and Duke by the media. They were genuinely counter cultural back then, even if it was embraced ironically for the humor. People whose dick retreats back into their body under the slightest scrutiny by woman twitter avatars have no place paying "homage" to these games at all. If gaming """"""""""""""""""""journalists"""""""""""""""""""" say that your game encourages people to become violent woman beating neo nazis then just own it, that's exactly what Doom did when it was slammed with accusations of being a satanic mass murder simulator back then. Even a game like Hatred, as gimmicky and ultimately dull as it is, is more admirable in that it isn't afraid to throw this suffocating etiquette out the window and do as it wants.

By wikipedia: "Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a free and open source roguelike computer game, which is the actively community-developed successor of the 1997 roguelike game Linley's Dungeon Crawl" This is my favorite free software game, it has very complex mechanics that makes the game very hard to play until you understand how things work. Besides the game being hard it's rewarding every time you came with a new strategy and progress further. One thing that i really enjoy is the gods of the game, everyone has a original identity. And that is it, if you enjoy roguelikes it's obligatory to play this game.

Just download the latest version (for Linux or that Crappy OS called windows), and you can play it. No Installation needed. I tested it on Ubuntu, Windows xp (back in 2016), windows 7, and windows 10, and it works great. The game is still in active development. The first version was released back in 2015-2016. Bonus points: play it on a CRT monitor. >Is the game finished? If not, how much is playable currently? I think you can finish the game, i'm not sure since i never was able to finish it yet. there are multiple branches (like forest or hell temed ones), and 20+ levels on the main branch. Around 260 demons to Befriend, battle, fuse, absorb, improve, and use. Multiple Starting classes, with the ability of upgrading your Innate powers to eventually gain abilities present in other classes. Each class can be played in multiple builds depending on what stats you choose to upgrade each level, your spells, and your team. >What input types are available? Mouse, and keyboard. Personal recomendation: keyboard with numpad. >What genre is the game? Roguelike >Is the game easy to modify? Would you want to? The dev only provides binaries so i don't think you can modify it. Hyper Rogue is free open source software with an unique style - the whole gameworld is non euclidian. The creator sells it on steam and itch, but you could just compile it yourself from source without paying a buck. While a bit rough on the graphic side, the gameplay is very polished and the different biomes you will enter are very creative. It's the fist dungeon crawler since FTL (non FLOSS) i played for a relevant amount of time. The music is great, the tunes are remiscent to the metroid series. Easy to install via steam/itch and fully playable; input types are mouse or keyboard. Genre=Dungeon Crawler. Should be possible to modifiy, but you would need to dive into the source.
