technological career

Batou · 2026-06-08 09:41
You love tech when you're a kid. you unknowingly set yourself on a career trajectory just because you wanted to know how to make your own video games. You cultivate skills incomprehensible to everyone around you, even at the most rudimentary, naive level. Some of us go on to higher study, some not, it doesn't mean much either way. If you give a damn, you might learn a bit of technological history and philosophy, and if you really care, you will confront dark ideas that make you question it all. How about the fact that the 'autistic computer whiz' who just wants to be left alone to grind his abstract problems, turns out to be a useful idiot for the powers that be, who supply "interesting problems" for him; how can we make this control system fast enough to aim at the target correctly? how can we differentiate and identify individual faces? can we redesign this PCB to make sure supply chain disruptions won't prevent us from manufacturing these war drones? There is much to say about the misery technological progress has inflicted on humanity in other ways. The Wired, which had such optimism, such potential, what a disappointment it is really. It's not changed technically, but my perspective has; I can't hold any enthusiasm when the nice things I could say are pithy compared to the negatives. Being a network engineer at an ISP sounds cool until you really think, their job is to maintain an efficient flow of television, porn, and social media posts to their customers. "We need to deliver three YouTube streams to this home as efficiently as possible!" Behind the port, a family sits in separate rooms, and in some years ma and pa will wonder why their child doesn't have any interest in talking to them. When did they ever? I will graduate soon. I have a feeling that if I can't find a technological area with a compelling purpose, I will become miserable, burn out, and quit forever. Why should I care if I am good at this, if I have potential, and even if I enjoy working with technology. If all my skills are good for is making the world a worse place, then why would I use them?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

You're way too young to be this disillusioned and demoralized. I suggest: >finish your degree (or don't) >do what it takes to survive and build some basic personal capital (without selling your immortal soul to satan or getting posessed by demons in the process) >become nietzsche pilled and find your own problems to solve (beginning with what problems matter and are available to you) >learn how to evade the mark of the beast and dismantle the satanic matrix (plus lots of personal growth) >????? (re-moralization) >profit (for the good of yourself and others)

It's sad for the techbros, but the same goes for any big industry, really. Instead of feeding the masses and using the sum of human knowledge and achievement in chemistry and biology to prioritize health, they produce purposely addictive slop that tears people from the inside bit by bit. Every product is made in the spirit of planned obsolescence. Healthcare is optimized to milk desperate people out of their last penny. Insights into human psychology are used for abuse at a collective level. All of these industries are manned by individuals by the way, some of whom probably had grand ideas of helping humanity at some point. You have to wonder how a farmer feels when he's forced to destroy a good harvest because capital ordains it. I don't think there's a way out. Not a normative one.

you are just showing off. you can find such "cons" in every job or activity there is. you are not a hero. no one cares about your "wrongdoings". especially not the people you just portrayed as dumb enough to not be able to make their own decisions. in this way, you are just like the powers you criticize. they would similarly state that the poor lambs cannot see the consequences of their own actions and decide for them "for their own good". the technological progress brought on some misery, yes. but do you see the net effect of technological progress on humanity as negative? you wouldn't be able to wipe your ass with anything other than a forest floor were it not for technology.

>>99178 God, I despise people like you. Whenever someone wakes up and realizes he might be doing something wrong, someone has to appear and say that "I guess everything is like kicking dead whales down the beach anyway bro". So we have this race to the bottom where all of our lives get worse and worse, but because speaking out against it is taboo we have to normalize it. Literal ghetto mentality. Someone got murdered few streets away from me? I guess it's fine to empty magazines into people now. Somebody upstairs getting raped? Better find some fuarrrk meat for myself. And then people wonder why things are bad. It couldn't possibly be because everyone does his small little part in making the world a nice place to live. No, no. Things just suck no matter what! I adore this race to the bottom.

>>99178 >you are just showing off. you can find such "cons" in every job or activity there is. you are not a hero. no one cares about your "wrongdoings". especially not the people you just portrayed as dumb enough to not be able to make their own decisions. Maybe this is bot, I never said people are 'too dumb to make decisions for themselves'. I am misanthropic, but I did not say this here. The job market for my expertise is small, only reliable employment is military r&d. I feel if I went this way I could never forgive myself. what is wrong with a person wondering "what is the greater purpose of my job, the primary thing I do"? I did this when I worked warehouse, I thought 'my job purpose is to help deliver bits of plastic junk that people will only throw out later', but I didn't really have a problem with that. At least it didn't really hurt anyone. I am not only complaining... I give voice to thoughts bouncing around for a long time. thsi has motivated me to put more effort in so I can carve out my own space for to do what I want. I'm even thinking of starting my own company if I really can't find anything. >but do you see the net effect of technological progress on humanity as negative? you wouldn't be able to wipe your ass with anything other than a forest floor were it not for technology. Could you not give better examples than 'toilet paper' of positive technological development? If you think not only of your own life in the first world, but also how contemporary technological development has subjugated and exploited the third world, the idea that technological progress has been a net positive becomes questionable.

>>99203 >youthful energy. Seems quite crude the suggest that it is OP who lacks some kind of positive energy when his whole problem is that there is no morally acceptable outlet for his ambitions in the field of his interest. I had similar thoughts when I was learning C, I actually started to hate computers and I had to drop it. What a godawful language, thankfully I was only learning it in my own free time, I feel sorry for the people who have to study that I did learn java though and I hated it, thankfully lisp exists Also people don't have that much to say, they generally talk nonsense so you can't really blame technology for people being disconnected, just sit down and talk to someone for a while, you'll get bored in no time

Some others here completely disparage you but I get what you mean and have had very similar thoughts about it all. I will suggest the following: there absolutely is truth to what you're saying, and the way that your life plays out has meaning and effects. I don't think it's quite as binary as you make it seem, i.e., that you must immediately find something ultimately meaningful or you will instantly die. You may well spend some years doing something you hate in order to make money and survive. Maybe even decades. If you really fuarrrk up, it could be your entire life, and you become a shell of a person as a result. Always keep fighting and try not to let yourself get too passive. There's stuff out there which does have meaning. There are ways to fail the game though. That's what Christians call hell. Try not to go there.

>>100042 I consider gambling totally fine and morally acceptable in case it's fair and you're not blatantly scamming people by making it impossible to win. All good things in life are always about abusing brain chemistry or driving it to its edge, and gambling is just like that, yet people somehow hate it while not hating things like love, parties, cycling, parachuting, etc, which ALL are about exactly that as well.
Judge Fang · 2026-06-29 07:30
>>100048 When it comes to actually gambling, it's not really a moral thing for the person doing it. But it is certainly run by immoral companies, that know most of their money comes from addicts who string themselves along. The guy you replied to was talking about working for a gambling company. I don't know how you missed this point.
Liet Kynes · 2026-06-29 08:25
>>100049 > But it is certainly run by immoral companies Why do you think every single one of them is immoral? Moreover, gambling extends far beyond just casino. Any videogame developer that makes games that has significant paid RNG element is also a gambling company of sorts. > that know most of their money comes from addicts who string themselves along That is not their fault if some of them do that, but they can be extra moral by limiting maximum amount spent for some period, for example. I've heard this exists, but never looked deeply into it. Just doing nothing is certainly not immoral. It would be immoral if they actively pushed people to these miserable states of being. If they mixed something into drinks they sell to make people more risky, etc. Yet somehow only few people go through the bottom of the barrel and spend more than they can afford, or even get into debts, etc. Those people who have poor self control could ruin their lives even by going to gym for example, because they could overdo protein shakes with steroids and all that soykaf. Are gyms immoral now?

>>100054 You sound unreasonably moralfaggy. Slot machines business model relies on winning being much more rare occurence than losing, but stuff like poker their business basically relies on hosting and maintaining tables I believe. Serving drinks and snacks also. Full featured casino combines everything: a bit of slot machines and similar, card tables and their management, etc.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2026-06-29 15:33
>>100054 >It's literally no different from selling fentanyl. i think it's worse than selling fentanyl. at least the junkie actually gets what he paid for, a good enjoyable high that lasts for a few hours. the gambling addict doesn't get anything, maybe a fleeting moment of false hope that lasts for a split-second, but that's it. even when he wins he doesn't get high, he just keeps on gambling until he loses everything again. the more insidious thing about casinos in my opinion, as well as other things like it such as financialism and the stock market and basically the whole capitalist system, is that it perverts what money is supposed to be. it's basically a sort of reverse counterfeiting, where instead of something worthless and forging it into false money to deceive and scam people, you're taking actual money and forging it into false money to deceive and scam people, you're taking something that was meant to be used as a medium of exchange for material goods and services, that serves as the backbone of our entire economic system, and turning it into a big lie and eroding the public trust in it; you're destroying civilized society.

Gambling is a scam. No one wins the lottery, the frauds running it just pay an advertising guy a paltry sum to pretend they won and make a big fuss. That's why there's always stories about how they somehow lost it all soon after, they never had it in the first place. All gambling is the same, they don't actually pay out anything they just give out small amounts to pretend there's a chance of winning. There's even surveillance going on to bait individual players with small wins to get them hooked.
Nell · 2026-07-09 00:11

>>100060 > No one wins the lottery > All gambling is the same Read about the concept of pity. Anyway, the most safe way to do traditional gambling is inside of an offline videogame. So no, its' not all the same. There might be more and less scammy implementations. Inside of a isolated videogame there is no incentive to scam which is why slot machines might be totally fair there.

You could just not thats what I did, I realized I didnt really like the process of programming or the math behind it I just liked the idea of technology I was fed as a kid which was ultimately a power fantasy and thats why tech is so soykaf and evil in the US. The selling point was this idea that computers will increasingly be everywhere and so going into "computer science" will make you an expert at navigating the world and give you a special power over everyone else and everyone will need you. For me this was quite literally fed to me starting in middle school, and I know for many others it was the same. Many schools around 2010-2016 rapidly added and pushed various stem programs and by stem I mainly just mean engineering robotics and computer science. In a lot of these programs the entire curriculum (as in history, language arts/rhetoric, etc.) for those in said programs morphed to be focused around technology. History was taught through various technological developments, the books to be read were things like brave new world and also various 'modern' rehashes of older classic (i remember one in particular called "the circle" that was all centered around some tech startup). It created a generation of intensely irritating people who feel as if they know everything and are geniuses of the world yet have serious gaps in foundational knowledge and who cant really understand or analyze any happenings or the world around them in a realistic way. Hard to explain but its like the sort of person who vaguely has heard about brain chemicals and remembers the gist of evolutionary theory and subsequently explains away any question about human behaviour with some vague useless nonsense about dopamine and serotonin and human nature that even in the rare instance its scientifically accurate, isnt really relevant and is like saying "nothings real..." when someone asks if something specific really exists. What underlies this is that this gen of techy all their life has been allowed to kind of pass off half baked underformed thoughts and ideas to those around them and have said ideas be met with praise or at least acceptance, since whenever they got into puters and tech and were told they have a real knack for it and should do computer science. As at the time when we were all being put on the techy train we often were the 'most' knowledgeable about tech related things and it didnt take much to impress family and teachers, and we also often knew how to use the internet better when using the internet was still a new skill making us seem better versed in all topics. Internally, unless you had some crisis or flop era that led you to check yourself, this creates a low bar for what passes muster. Its like a similar less bad version of what all of the CEOs and soykaf we were told to idolize as epic cool stem heroes have. Even though someone like Elon is not in this generation, those born ultra wealthy often also do not get told "thats stupid" or "no" as much as others and so they too feel their very banal or kind of low ideas are very poignant and believe that most thoughts that pass through their head are of a higher caliber than others. When fatally that very belief is what prevents them from ever being high caliber thoughts or ideas. This isnt to say techys or someone like elon never question themselves but what passes as rigorous self questioning or what they believe is "questioning themselves" might look like hardly anything to someone whos interests and education were not in this new field where coding up a little simple pong game had adults thinkinh you were a child prodigy. I distinctly remember trying to make a program in java for my senior project that would predict the resulting chemical of a few basic types of chemical reactions. Ive forgotten most of chemistry but I remember it could only really predict the most basic like hydrogen exchange and a few other ones, I totally failed to get it working for a number of other ones, but the senior project panel was totally just blown away. They thought I must be the crown jewel of our little high school, when I was really quite fuarrrking stupid and some of my friends shooting for pre med or other non computer sciences or even the band kids did things that required 20x more thought and knowledge and skill but because the panel was more familiar with these other areas and most hs senior projects in these fields wont result in something "brand new" they didnt get half as much praise. And its good they didnt, too much praise kills the mind. And thats why the tech and the people behind it are so evil in part. I primarily switched away from comp sci in college because I just realized doing things out of some fantasy vision of you being an epic master hacker or scientist or doctor or whatever is not good enough to push you through, you need to actually like just doing it. I actually hate the idea of being an artist but it just so happens I really enjoy painting and figure drawing and all visual art so ive kept with it. Another reason I switched though is I didnt like who I was, I knew id never feel secure in life until I was confidently sociable and could make friends anywhere and had people in my life I looked up to and took care of, just personally for whatever reason I needed to be able to make friends easily and keep them to feel secure in life. I knew staying in conputer science and eventually working for facebook or lockheed martin or whatever would make this problem worse because I noticed even in highschool this dilemna where everyone in my little stem program was intensely unlikeable, and talked down to everyone and were kind of mean for no reason. This stem program was supposed to be like the new AP program but I also noticed all the kids taking said AP classes instead of the stem ones were far far smarter in my opinion yet also way easier to get along with. It took a few years unfortunately to not just notice this in others but realize I was also dumb and unlikeable and only getting worse. Being likeable isnt everything of course but im just using likeable for lack of a better word. more appropriate would be to say the tech kids that are now like 25-30 and still in it are what id call "difficult personalities" and they are borderline proud of it. And its the sort of difficult personality rooted in a selective lack of empathy or curiosity about others, and on top of that this is being praised by the world at large and rewarded with cash. This has been said a million times but its a class or group that pretty much mimics exactly the sort of people working on wallstreet back in the day. Anyways though all that aside it doesnt have to be like this. This is the tech culture for whatever reason the powers that be pushed for, but theres nothing inherently wrong with creating new technologies and programming and computer science and etc. etc. It should be just another science and field of study instead of this weird obfuscated "what does anyone in this building even do" government bailout funded hell machine. And it can be that for you if you enjoy it and like it, I dont know what your specific tech speciality is but we actually could really use more goos non sell-out people in all areas. Net sec peeps to leak government docs or leak emails and weird texts from these evil tech CEOs or say develop some soykaf that fuarrrks with AI somehow or making free or cheap alternatives to insanely overpriced programs or helping crack drm or whatever these are all kind of dumb examples but you get the idea. Get your job and get your bread and in your off time balance the scales with the above or just whatever you can put your powers towards that your passionate about. Alternatively many these days do not actually get a job in the field they studied for their BA, work a normal job you can move up in and do whatever personal projects or work your passionate about on the side. If you really like working with tech and puters that is. My experience is that doing anything you love for a job you are obligated to go to or risk your health and home will kill your love for it. Always. People who disagree ive met are always in a position where they would not be out on the street if they quit said job or got fired. Someone not like this might like their job but they never end up doing their job on off time as a personal hobby.
