Esperanto Scouting

In "Scouting for Boys," Baden-Powell recommends Esperanto as a secret language:
"Also if you want to use a secret language in your patrol, you should all set to work to learn ”esperanto“. It is not difficult, and is taught in a little book costing one penny. This language is being used in all countries so that you would be able to get on it abroad now. "
We should keep internet culture more secretive so that it represents an international culture not merely a reflection of English-speaking countries like America.
Would anyone here be interested in learning Esperanto to help stop the internet from leaking ?

>not merely a reflection of English-speaking countries like America.
This is really just a consequence of population and internet infrastructure. English is the most spoken language in the world, and the countries with the highest English speaking populations have the more access to the internet. Even if a trend of learning Esperanto did develop, statistically, a huge percentage of the people learning would also be Americans. For all manner of other reasons, Esperanto also lies low on the list of practical languages to learn. I think one would be better off learning a living language with a longer history, even if it is more difficult.

Esperanto sounds like just an Anglo bastardized version of Spanish and Portuguese. It sounds not good. I like Lojban and Toki Pona better.

dogy bona is a fun language that really is not built to be useful. Trying to use it is like trying to use templeos for your serious engineering+cad job.
>>97544
I dont see why learing some other language with a longer history would be desierable. Amusingly Esperanto is actually really useful as an entry into an interesting, distributed network of random people who will let your crash at their houses while traveling around. Not saying its going to be the new lingua franca but hey it has a niche.

Mi jam scipovas iomete Esperanto. Kvankam, mi nek parolas ĝin laŭte, nek uzas ĉian kompreneblan enigon, nek havas grandan vortprovizon, nek iam eĉ legis unu (1) libron.... Do "scipovas" estas eble ne preciza...
Anyway, despite liking Esperanto, it's honestly a bad design for use as a universal auxiliary language. It's much, much too Eurocentric. You'd really just be replacing anglocentrism with Eurocentrism
Roger Pollack · 2026-04-21 15:28
I love Esperanto. I learned it 10+ years ago. Esperantujo aĉegas sed la lingvo mem estas amuza

The eurocentrism criticism is always nonsense. Learn the culture, it's huge in Asia, that's where a lot of speakers are from. ĈRI, from China, has a lot of broadcasts. The language is very unlike European languages, it just has similar vocabulary. But the grammar is not European. People just want to criticize things, the Internet loves to criticize and repeat the same criticism despite that being there forever. Zamenhof himself wrote about it, it's not original and has been answered a million times. Same with every criticism that comes from non-Esperantists. Actual Esperanto speakers have very different criticisms.

>The language is very unlike European languages
That's just not true, it's very closely based on indo-European roots and almost exclusively uses phonemes that are commonly found in European languages.
Still a stupid criticism, because the structure of indo-European languages makes them relatively easy to pick up compared to tonal languages, even for speakers of tonal languages.

Vocab is similar. Grammar is very agglutinative and simple, unlike romance languages. Those criticisms make sense for Interlingua or Ido I guess but people just hate to hate

Depends. I've gotten more out of Esperanto than French despite knowing French to C1, EO only B2

Alilandanoj eĉ ne lernas bazajn sociregulojn, ili ne lernos tutan novan, eĉ facilegan, lingvon k ĝin uzi mdr

While Toki Pona is difficult to use it is easy to learn so I still think it is very useful just for that. As for my argument for lojban

Lojban just looks cool maybe. But dumb grammar and I don't care for the people that use it. It'd be a private language. It is. I've used various aspects in my personal conlang.

Does anyone want to help translate TESR Skywind to Esperanto ?

Can personally vouch for La Lengua de Los Elfos by Luis Gonzalez Baixauli (if you speak spanish). Unless you specifically mean non-Tolkien takes on elvish, but Tolkien's languages have extensively developed etymologies interwoven with his mythos. namárië ta ta
