so... i keep swinging back and forth online by going borderline paranoid schizo and being an obedient normal person one day i do regular normal person soykaf like ID verify my age with id to use a banking app and stuff, use tiktok and instagram and watch youtube on a regular android phone, using chrome an google services, chatgpt, using the same email and phone number for a lot of stuff, yknow normal person stuff and suddenly going full schizo, as in i must have my own neocities website with all of my unfiltered thoughts with a .onion mirror, and the only way to communicate with me directly is via pgp encrypted messages on email or irc or any decentralised/federated protocols that require 0 personal info, and remove my presence everywhere else, no youtube, no social media, no stock android, no windows, no cloud storage and no proprietary software or formats, only use monero for money and commerece, only store my most important dats on an encrypted sd card or usb drive, and when doing sensetive data only use tailsOS on a usb my brains goes towards these 2 extremes where "i give up, its so over, we'll never recover from this" to "'I MUST RESIST, OPENAI IS THE ANTI CHRIST, EVERYONE MUST BE AWARE OF THE ATROCITIS HAPPENING IN CYBER SPACE, fuarrrk THE WORLD!!!" why am i like this? where is the sweet spot? where is the balance? how do i start over my digital identity without my family and friends getting suspicious? they alr communicate via whatsapp, telegram, discord and instagram i cant really just delete those, and my identity is tied to em sure i can change my username, email, dob, pfp but maintaining a double personality is risky and difficult what do?

>>92551 what? no. what makes you think thats the case?
William Holtzer · 2025-08-02 17:45
focus on what you need to be secure. think, specifically, about what browsing habits you're okay with being sold vs what is absolutely your own space. then think about what "your own space" even means: do you want to have a neocities webpage and XMPP address that your friends must contact you at? if so, which friends? personally, i participate in normal person society to some extent but have my own "private garden" (which lainchan is part of) for when im not feeling as confident in the whole surveillance state outside world. I at times make throwaway accounts to talk to new people, especially online, while they earn my trust. for every paranoid thing you do, think about why you're doing that particular thing. i think the intentionality can help.

>>92549 I think you should stop romanticising schizophrenia which is a very real and debilitating disorder and instead realise that you’re passionate about a very normal ethical question.

>>92570 yeah sorry, its just that the word is what best describes the state im in, not actual schizophrenia. just the emotion and anxiety

>>92549 I don't understand why everyone else is entertaining you. There is no way around it, you are simply a poser. You don't legitimately care about these issues. You have the bandwagon mindset of an average person! Be real, you don't have a legitimate reason to use TailsOS, it's obvious you only see it as the 'cool Tor hacker OS'.
Unnamed · 2025-08-09 08:48
>>92555 This. Looking a little bit like a normal person is good opsec anyway. >>92603 Two things hacker use of privacy tech for high agency actions normal person use of privacy tech for basic privacy both are freckling valid. I heartheart normal people.

>>92549 It sounds like you’re not just flipping between “paranoid” and “complacent” — you’re reacting to a real tension between wanting to live in the modern connected world and wanting to retain autonomy, dignity, and privacy. That tug-of-war can feel extreme because both sides are valid in different contexts. One important thing: what you’re experiencing isn’t unique or a “broken” mindset — it’s a sign that you’re aware of how the digital landscape works and you’re wrestling with what your acceptable trade-offs are. Many people bury that conflict entirely and just go with convenience. Others burn out going full opsec 24/7 and end up miserable or isolated. The “sweet spot” isn’t a fixed point — it’s a moving target that fits your life stage, energy, and priorities. Some ideas: Decide what you’re protecting and from whom. You don’t need TailsOS to send your mom a cat photo. But if you’re talking whistleblower-level material or personal archives you truly don’t want exposed, then you do want compartmentalized, high-opsec tools. Without knowing your threat model, you’ll always feel like you’re oscillating between overkill and negligence. Separate identities, not personalities. You can have a “public/convenience” account cluster and a “private/safe” account cluster, without lying to people or living a double life. The key is to clearly define which activities happen where — and never let high-risk actions leak into the casual profile. Make incremental moves, not total purges. Instead of nuking your whole online life, you could gradually: Move personal messaging with close friends to more private apps. Use privacy-respecting services (Proton, Signal, FOSS apps) alongside the mainstream ones. Shift your main browsing/searching away from Google while keeping a burner Chrome for mandatory logins. Use a hardened phone or laptop for certain activities, but keep your daily driver for family/social use. Accept that perfect privacy is impossible. This isn’t a reason to give up — it’s a reason to focus on impactful improvements instead of chasing purity. Balance with mental health in mind. Going “full schizo” all the time is exhausting, and giving up entirely leads to resignation. Think of it like diet or exercise: sustainable habits > crash extremes. As for “starting over” without raising suspicion — you can quietly introduce changes by framing them as “trying new apps,” “security experiments,” or “avoiding spam” rather than “I am escaping mass surveillance.” That keeps family and friends from overthinking your motives. The balance comes when you accept that you can live in both worlds — not as a hypocrite, but as someone who uses the right tool for the right job.

>>92799 Also, obviously, randomizing irl stores in which I buy all electronics (ideally avoiding online lookup of the store, unless I choose to decoy -- look up a different one from the one I shall go to), never buying online unless it is secondhand phones I can arrange to pick up the very same day, etc. Ideally also randomizing the exact item I pick up from the shelf. And of course stuff such as generating "physical hashes" of my room while I sleep via doorstop postioning; anti-tampering. Just taking pictures of it.

>>92800 Plus some further less relevant stuff such as avoiding to type in passwords when I am recording sound on my phone, so to avoid acoustic leaking of it via typing resonance mapping (it is unavoidable anyway, but at least I avoided storing it in the fs). But those were not that necessary. Alright, enough.
Agent Richard Gill · 2025-08-09 14:55
>>92801 Alright, three more. Avoiding wearables and items in general that have capacity to harvest ambient energy (kinetic e.g. via spinning, body heat) so as to power their listeners / transmitters. Taking off / being wary of reflective surfaces (mirrors, my own eyes), decreasing screen brightness to reduce reflection and minimize chance of viewed content leaking. Recording voice notes for installation steps and other procedures ("the checksum for X matches"), so to avoid false memories / uncertainty; really should be encoded into binary taps or preferably stenoganophonic innocuous sounds. That's it for sure.

>>92549 take it easy... Get some books, get some cozy soyest soykaf from yer childhood and let the panic settle down. Radio was also THE HOT SHIT which even was useful to start wars - say, Goebbels' ways of peddling WAAAAAAAGHHHH over radio was quite retarded for modern standards yet it was HOT for 1940s standards. just let OpenAI get bonked by rivals. The Chinese have quite the potential, after all.

I was going to Ctrl+F "identity" to say: they say I may lose my identity from all the Internet surfing, lurking and stuff? Pffffft! I feel like my "real identity" is so full of inter-generative trauma / "dont understand this world" trauma and related issues I could have an easier time losing my identity rather that haphazardly sticking to it. Sure, an average Joe should try and keep some of "his" data hoarded on 2-3 identical HDDs, though. Look, in case of OP: relax! Cut 1 coffee of your evening to take it eas*ier*, and save the resource for later. A) we're all feeling *something* with recent AI boom unfolding before our eyes. B) its not like we know HOW to secure ourselves C) Basically, youngsters experience this very sour-itching sway (source: XIX Russian literature like Turgenev's "Otsy i deti")

A random honest suggestion to anyone dealing with a similar issue: cut you caffeine intake in half. Learn how to improve your sleep, too, there is a thread on "optimising sleeping" already with a gem in it.
