the degenerate existence of modern city dwellers
Incognito · 2025-07-21 15:27
Am i the only one who thinks life in a city is absolutely terrible. Most people don't even know how bad it is until they finally leave. I mean everywhere i go there are always people. An overpopulation of them a infestation if you will digging giant cave systems out of a dying land, few animals or plants you will find there are being smoked out domesticated or are just sick and dying or already lie dead rotten on a cold stone surface.
it feels so fuarrrking dystopian its unreal. The first thing i WILL do when i get the chance is leave and live in some forest hut or on the outskirts of a very small village like a hermit. Living WITH nature instead of competing it or beating it like a pulp
Becoming less and less dependent on other people or the intergovernmental institutions since long term they are not sustainable and will always fail. If you are wondering why you always feel like soykaf, why your material goods or shiny clothes feel hollow or empty, why feel like just a cog in the machine wasting away for someone else's burning material desire, here is your answer... you live in the city
The Oracle · 2025-07-21 15:56
I have lived extensively in both, from the bumfuck middle of the forest as a hermit surviving, to the middle of a sprawling megacity, and I can tell you one thing for sure, you take yourself (your baggage, your conditioning, your skills) wherever you go. The things humans do in cities is analogous to what animals do in forests. Its the hamsterwheel that is samsara. I think you, as a city slicker, will actually find rural life to be more bullshit than city life. I've seen it happen both ways. I will also say that where your story ends is usually a result of where you started. Good luck finding yourself lainon. It can take a few years or a lifetime
Donna Hawthorne · 2025-07-21 22:17
I too have lived in both.
Life in the city was obviously more stimulating.
Nature is not very interesting on more than the mechanical / bioadaptive level.
Humans and societies are the most complex entity there is.
Then again, had I had good memory, I would have analyzed humans even without seeing them daily.
But then again, everyone profits from direct observation.

Different places suck for different reasons
City is like kicking dead whales down the beach because too many people
Rural is like kicking dead whales down the beach because too few people
Suburbs are suck from design
The solution is being close enough to a city and a rural area so you can enjoy the benefits of both, while also not being in a suburb. Owning lots of land in between is the dream.

>Life in the city was obviously more stimulating.
Press 'f' to doubt.
In my experience, city living consists of "exchange money for sensation"
Country living (or basically non-city activities) are more often "exchange effort/time/interest for <more rewarding sensation>"
e.g: I have way more fun spending an afternoon sitting in the woods hunting red squirrel than I've ever had doing pretty much anything in a city.
Exceptions include:
- museums (which you can just travel to visit)
- major performances (e.g: ballet) (which you can just travel to visit)

to perform Their Business
if you have grey hair and are still muckin' about in the urb, you done fukt up somewhere
ideally it should go rural →city →rural ↑space
also paul virillio has a great, essential analysis that the urban project is finished

it's not just people who messed up, but wealthy people who don't want to quit making their life about them. They're comfortable forcing their kids to move school districts every few years just for a job opportunity or a pretty house. People don't want to settle down, even in their forties and fifties, many either live or dream of living like they're twenty until their body gives out.

As someone who has sucessfully settled down, and missed MANY job opportunities resisting uprooting, I can say with absolute certainty this is bullshit.
As a generality, **people** want quiet, simple lives where they are left alone. Government and corporations refuse to allow you this simple pleasure, because doing so costs money and power.

That's a very good assessment of city living I think. I stayed in London for 2.5 years, and that very much was the model of living. It seems like the model of capitalism is most complete somewhere like London.

Maybe if you’re not creative or social? When I was living in a large capital city of a country that shall go unnamed me and my friend would constantly just walk around town and there was always something going on and people out doing something. You didn’t need to go inside anywhere and pay to discover things, sometimes people here giving out free things, they where hosting events, playing music, people just hanging out, and a large amount of those people where very happy to just talk and hang out no strings attached. Sometimes people would just give us free drinks and drugs while we were hanging out, no money spent. I’ve never experienced that when growing up in the countryside. People in the country tends to be more introverted, rude and sheltered. It’s not an exciting place to be and I say that as an introvert. In the city I can go out and there is always something happening when I’m bored.

If you live in rural areas and you get a bad reputation then you are fuarrrked, while in a city you can just move to a new social group. Also I like meeting new people, communities and events and like you said cities often host those all the time. Like I could potentially show up to multiple social events and activities in a month within a city that I can't do in rural. People on here are likely anti-social and so they often romanticize the rural world where they can live off the gird and be independent but forget that having healthy social communities is huge.

>Maybe knowing your neighbors isnt fun if you're some sort of filthy degenerate but maybe we wouldnt have so many filthy degenerates is they had to keep up appearances for their neighbors and family and stuff.
An interesting point. The city is so large and densely populated that people feel anonymous. I believe the phenomena of people acting depraved only happens because of this disconnectedness from the people around them; they can afford to be more selective of the people they associate with, so they associate with who makes them more comfortable, which retards or even reduces your interpersonal skills.
Only in the cities can people be so staunch about associating only with those who share hobbies. A true relationship is not based on such a thing. But people find this a more comfortable social situation.

It is absolutely a desperate measure to hold onto power now that their legitimacy is fading and we're beginning to slide into the sort of intolerable living conditions that historically give rise to revolution. The sheeple aren't quite at the level of waking up, but they're beginning to see the strings and it's terrifying the elites. They're doubling down on censorship and repression because that's all they know how to do. The thought of giving even a single concession is completely alien to them. Whereas the place they go through earlier in "wasteland nostalgia" is probably Israel and Palestine. It's hard to say, like I said a lot of it is like a crystallization of some sort of "Astral" hypersymbolic slush layer, and it's an as above so below as within so without allegory, and is basically the record of an MK Monarch deprogramming to begin with least as an overlay. So it may not even have to map spatially, and they pass over the City Lights Bookstore which could either be a manifestation of memory and have nothing to do with where they are spatially, or it can imply that they're in what used to be California. So I think since they end up in Mosk after this... still figuring it out.
The issue may be trying to map something metaphysical and allegorical directly onto something spatial and real. That it's a process and set of steps occuring in a nonlinear manner, not a single entity traveling from place to place.
Still, I think there's something to it. This spiral staircase is actually the protein stripped end of a tobacco mosaic virus going into an egg. Disguised as an incomplete or malformed cosmic egg / orphic egg.

I also have a feeling it's all gonna end one way or another once the obvious 33rd birthday comes. I'm focused on experiencing the flesh prison since it's showering me with synchronicities currently but I'm also working on making a game. two if possible. follow your own advice: you assumed that lainchan staff are persecuting you and doing censorship, either because you exceptionalistically feel like you are being targeted or because you want to be a hater. either way, it is in very poor faith and this attitude of yours disrupts everyone else's experience.
>my script gave an error
there could have been lainchan site updates or archive.org site updates, or updates to the wget application. I think the latter is the most likely, i seem to recall wget updating their policy in news recently. there is no "they" that is targeting you.
>And if they blocked it in robots.txt, would archive.org have even saved the version that blocked it?
now you're just not making sense. this is what I mean by tech pseudery: while it is possible for a website to send a different version of the webpage to archive.org's bots, it is trivially easy to check. there is no shadowy place where malicious things happen that we can only make paranoid assumptions of. you can test it yourself by changing your user-agent to archive.org scrapers' user-agent.
>you have no place talking about anyone "figuring things out".
you're right, I don't, but as someone attempting to communicate you need to meet the people you're talking to where they're at. otherwise you resign yourself to utmost psychotic, solipsistic paranoia of any and everything. You seem to feel very attacked by everything and frustrated, perhaps, that nobody really backs you up or helps you out. I was simply stating my opinion as to why.
>I could just as well assert you're the mod or site operator (who constantly sages across the site) and you're playing games.
listen to yourself. there is no singular powertripping mod who is sageing across the site, why would they even need to do that? if an entity existed with the capacities you mentioned they could just ban your HTTPS certificate, IP and VPN ranges or they could edit your posts so it doesn't look like you're denying them. they could data mine your closest secrets, they could serve you malicious files and if they even cared about you that much social engineer you in the process. the only reason why you can assert these things in the first place is because moderators aren't on power trips. though i honestly believe they should be less lenient towards threads like this and the kind of hostility you bring in here.
>You're mind-fuarrrked, buddy

>you assumed that lainchan staff are persecuting you and doing censorship
I didn't "assume", I know. Threads and posts are deleted. It's that simple.
>disrupts everyone else's experience.
Unsurprisingly you just drop this line but make no attempt at making your case or substantiating it.
>now you're just not making sense. this is what I mean by tech pseudery:
My script error'd and submitting the site directly to the wayback machine did likewise. Attempting to use wget, it stated that it was being blocked by robots.txt. I had to add the switches for it to ignore it.
>while it is possible for a website to send a different version of the webpage to archive.org's bots
Irrelevant to the discussion. I stated I didn't know whether a site blocking with robots.txt would even have the new versions of that file archived. You ignored this and answered something that, while creative, was no relevant. Essentially you're trying to find leverage and bolster a case built on nothing but your own narratives.
>you're right, I don't, but as someone attempting to communicate you need to meet the people you're talking to where they're at. otherwise you resign yourself to utmost psychotic, solipsistic paranoia of any and everything. That said, here are my suggestions for me-proofing boards.
* Block posts with first- and second-person pronouns, yes. Maybe permit a very, very small ratio.
* Impose min post length, yes.
* Disable greentext, and perhaps its analogs such as quote-wraped lines / paragraphs. Addressing other people is identitial and useless.
* Forcr that style unifier I haf spoken of. Will decrease identity pursuit too.
* Drop /hum/ as a board, yes. Humanist insight emerges as discussion of technology, as it is (in terms of networking, cognition, identity obscuration / derivation, ... ) abstracting its problems and issues anyway. So tech boards are intrinsically /hum/ anyway, and it is a step backwards, by inviting people who only speak human. Not to mention technologists are more human than humans by mere intellect.
* Maybe block nonvector img formats (and even for vector images, parse to ensure they are schematics and not art / representation).
* Maybe disable saging and force aging.
* Maybe impose cooldowns on order of half an hour or more.
That is beyond mod intervention.
Terzibashjian · 2025-08-24 02:00

(Or maybe split tech boards into, yes, "selfproblems" and "transproblems". First for editors, languages, debugging etc.; second for protocols, service design, specific libraries as serve human intents (intrinsic, not instrumental; "a better window manager" is instrumental). May be taken even further into code collaboration, digital policy, companies etc. Probably preferably not.
Anyway, point is, /transtech/ would be the successor to /hum/.
Arguably, though, /sec/ fulfills that role.
Point is, get rid of human-attractors.)

It's a fair point to but the modern world really sells the idea that people can only live through spending on frivolities, hence the hegemony of the Consumption concept.
A city has its advantages although the OP's overall tone is one of criticism of the urban life. Say, a certain urban life. It's obviously easier to create or find communities in cities, which is nice too for social creatures like us.
The environment that was described is typical of most modern large cities now: greenless, crass, noisy and cramped. Which easily induces anxiety.
Cities attract wealth and power and exacerbate the issues any society has. Needless to say, current times are ripe with such issues. Western cities are dens of mediocrity and filth on the average, they do not deserve respect.
Countryside people, for all their ills, are far more level headed and stable. You may have less friends, less fancy groups you can join and leave at will, but the stability, quietness and common sense you find are priceless. To say nothing of the natural landscapes.
>>92505

>>92538
>Only in the cities can people be so staunch about associating only with those who share hobbies. A true relationship is not based on such a thing.
Even sexual hobbies. Requirements for a proper and convenient social life are more dissolved in cities, of which the effects are mitigated only in times of tighter moral rectitude.
In laxer times cities are wide scale calls for inhumane debauchery. Urbanites in general are the most rootless of all people, they always live in the abstract.
The worst is when these morons come to the countryside, settle there and then decide to change the rules and environment according to their vision of the world and it's always terrible.

A thread critical of cities and society is made; later on a post injects an obivously loaded political set of questions on a single theme that isn't named; then comes the retarded posting meant to derail it all.
Just a quick example.
>Yet in the game show episode "Mosk", which gets nuked by the Rapture, is located basically where Israel is on their map. Which is what you'd expect, Mosk would be Jerusalem, getting nuked. I have an idea to fuarrrk up people back.
1. Buy a bunch of cheap disposeable ear plugs. 1 jar or maybe more.
2. Set up an oldschool tape player + "programmable outlet" thingy
3. our tape player - just push play
(make sure the button is mechanical, and the player will play once the timer socket feeds the tape player with electricity)
4. "BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!!! I WANT YOU IN MY ROOM!!!" class alarm clock to fuarrrk up the heads of your noisy midnight-partyng neighbours hahahahahhahaha
5. In 2025, you can put a "tape adapter" into a semi-broken tape player (damaged gears of the tape mechanism or torn rubber) and put a non-stop. But then again, you pretty much can use a basic MP3 player + a usb charger + a pair of active speakers + the same "programmable socket"
So, you hear your neighbours going UNCE UNCE UNCE UNCE
You plug the earplugs in to have some comfy sleep
You sleep
7 AM - ahahahaha now it's my turn!!! How's sleep, soykafhead owls?!?!

Seriously, OP, try and describe some *particular* problems you're dealing with, so lainons could pinpoint the issues you're dealing with.
In other words.
Tell me the soykaf you're used to already - street noises, rude neighbours, noisy neighbours, stench, faulty wiring etc.

While watching the show I assumed map is supposed to be earth.
On pic1 I see Europe and Asia. Africa is covered by his body.
Looking how badly the earth has been massacred in the show it's not weird that seas and oceans will have different shore lines.
Pic2 and Pic3 are a bit more of a stretch. I would point that location to east of mediterranean sea with the island or land mass above it being around Cyprus location (of course it's scale would be way off).
I had to spend a bit looking at it and trying to match it.
In your interpretation we are looking at partially flooded Yemen?

I had the exact same feeling as you. I lived in a crowded city for half a year, and it made me realize how deeply people are buried in different levels of abstraction. When I came back to my hometown, I noticed how the lack of constant noise made me peaceful. Noise pollution is very real, and it messes with people more than they realize.
Now I can take a walk in the park by the river and not pass a single person. Just birds, ducks, and cats. That kind of quiet nature calms me down. That said, I do miss some of the busyness of the big city — and the architecture too. I think, for me, the best setup would be a house on the outskirts of a city. That way, I could have space, silence, and nature, but still get a bit of stimulation whenever I need it.

I thought it could be Earth with minor variations and embellishments, or symbolic renamings (sea of sleep, mt slave, etc). I now suspect it's actually the moon. This is why Pino counts in rabbits (moon rabbit), the ship is the centzon totochtin, etc. ie centzon Toto-chtin. Dorothy's companion, Toto. The robot in the memory room wears ruby red slippers. Vincent's autoreiv is named Dorothy (she's killed and replaced by a self aware spinner kitten, Pino). The Ergo Proxy manga has the one who brought the Centzon to Romdeau named Dorothy.

See this thread for all that.

Yes. Thank you for not being completely obtuse and belligerently retarded, like the other poster who said "blah blah blah it's totally fictitious, hurr durr look at me I'm fuarrrking retarded and I'm here to make it your problem."
>Looking how badly the earth has been massacred in the show it's not weird that seas and oceans will have different shore lines.
Yep. My thought exactly. There's no clear way to establish a timeline either. It could be that Earth is frozen over, it could be hundreds to thousands of years in the future, the methane hydrate explosion could have shifted the landmasses, or it could actually take place in the past. I couldn't find a definitive way to tell.
>In your interpretation we are looking at partially flooded Yemen?
Don't know. When they're at the City Lights Bookstore, IRL that's located in California. So it Implies they either left Romdeau, went to the Northeast US, traveled across the US to California, and are headed to Russia. Or that they traveled across India and Asia, and across the Pacific. That puts Mosk around Kansas, Utah. Maybe even Texas. That's assuming these places even exist and are arranged spatially, rather than temporally or symbolically.

its dystopian to be living in some atomized family in a suburb completely out of touch with everyone, in artificial nature. i grew up in and have seen absolutely horrific soykaf occur within these sorts of family units with everyone in it thinking its normal or acceptable because everyone is an island unto themselves. Id much rather have a chunk of actual unsculpted nature within walking distance of skyscraper concrete jungle than a bunch of highway islands and lawns for miles.
I respect rural communities I respect small towns and I respect city but the sprawl 90% of you "i was raised isolated and thus cant understand cities and somehow this is cities fault" if I could explode your heads with my mind I would which is why im glad I cant. I actually have lived in all of these places, from 0 - 15 i lived in rural woodland hills with just family and extended family, from 15 - 21 I lived in suburb, and from 21 to 30 (now) I have lived in a city. There isnt any point in discussing with you how you are wrong or not comprehending, because we dont speak the same language anyways. Most people on this board have had irreperable psychic damage done to them making them incredibly antisocial and causing them to hold schizophrenic interpretations of why people do things and the people around them because you dont interact with enougg people and certainly not closely or intimately to put anything in your brain to the test. As a result the rest of the world has to just suffer with these sort of like ticking timebomv half humans who spend their life waiting for the day someone wrongs them so they can lash out and have their special moment in their otherwise very mundane life. If you are the product of a suburban atomic family you are part of a group of people more isolated than any large swathe of people has ever been in history and you think its the way life ought to be. In much of the ye olde times you long for there was villages and if land was occupied by just one family it was families of like 10 or 20. Thats 10+ people you are regularly living with, forced to compromise with and deal with the annoyances of, that life doesnt produce people like you or the people on this board who cant even hold a conversation with someone you don't completely know like the back of your hand. You were raised to be a social burden and that is why you cant handle living in a city.

Or large parks that bisect entire districts.

Cities suck, yes. Generally they only grow because there is economic opportunity to be had there that is unavailable elsewhere... living in the countryside is like kicking dead whales down the beach much worse if there is no work and you don't own land to grow food. It is not an escape from the miasma of capitalism. The only thing going for it is that your environment is less unpleasant to be in.
If you go full primitivist and you don't want to farm, whether you live or die in a given year is extremely dependent on whether other species do well enough to sustain you. You'll also almost certainly die if you are alone.

Yeah. The hatred cities get ,minus the ghetto parts where crime dominates, is rally overrated. Like there are some inconveniences, but as someone who has lived in the a featureless small city surrounded by suburbs and visited both the rural towns surrounding said city and medium to large size cities, I can already tell that most of my lack of socialization isn't form something internal, but just form the lack of opportunity to either meet the same people and build deeper bonds like a rural town or meet new people, experience new things and live a more fulfilled life and grow social bonds like in an actual city that isn't a dilapidated suburb.
A lot of the modern social ills are just due to retarded suburban planning becoming the norm and the highly atomized lifestyle people live in these ratholes compared to the boring but still respectable lives of people in rural/small towns and the more natural setting of the city (which most people that ever lived have lived in one or another across thousands of years). In the next couple of generations, the suburbs will cease to exist and they'll just become more natural offshoots of the city structure. I just don't like how hard it is to meet people in the suburbs compared to anywhere else where people act a lot more natural. The fact that people think post-WW2 social planning is normal is quite the farce.

yeah the urban planning behind suburbs is a marvel of shortsightedness. Funny you should mention the "ghetto" thing, in city im in the most sketch looking area is a little section of inner city for various reasons also involving some shortsighted decisions. However very little bad is likely to happen to you there unless you are literally homeless. The part of the city where you are actually most likely to get your head blown off for being in the wrong place wrong time just so happens to be where the city turns into suburbs getting worse as you go deeper into the suburb. For well documented reason in that within a city if you have an area where there is no activities no reason to meander around at night cause there is a lower concentration of business and schools and whatever and you have lower concentration of streetlights and lower concentration of public transit these things compound to create prime crime mugging theft shoot gun real estate. Its why even though there is those few super sketch looking blocks of inner city with lots of addicts you are very unlikely to get robbed or assaulted ot whatever there because people generally avoid doing those things if there is a lot of people walking around and its well lit. You basically never hear gunshots, its a big deal if there is one, but you go to that little suburban area and you will literally hear a gun go off 5 times at least every single night.
Not to say all suburbs are ghettos this is strictly speaking about having areas of unchanged sprawl within a city economy and ecosystem.
