The recruitment officers didnt catch me and I have severe OCD to be able to fight. Plus I am a pacifist, I am emotionally not ready to kill and dont want to go to the war from egoistical perspective (did you read reports of people who been there? Its hell!).
But all that matters is that they didnt catch me.

forgive me I am legitimately curious. Do you hide? Are you just a complete neet ? Do they not have school/birth/medical records ? It seems they would be able to discover almost everyone...You may say you are too ocd but it has been some time that they've been sending as far as I can see very young, very old, wounded and otherwise suboptimal soldiers to the front, an OCD pacifist would you really be so useless by the standards they consider? Perhaps fear of death could chase some of the pacifism out of you as well....but were I you, I would not want to go to die for this pointless war either which shall only harm both countries as far as I can tell....

Yes, I am NEET, been that way from ~16yo. The goverment didnt know about me much, I suppose.
I never worked full time so there is no documents related to work (трудова книжка). I skipped school the day they send all boys to military medical commision for registration so I dont have military document (війсковий квиток). Without one you cant offically work or get in a Uni or get a driver licence. Medical stuff well... to access GP (сімейний лікар) and other guaranteed med.services free of charge I need to register a contract with GP or I can pay in cash at every step. So I only have what? National ID (паспорт) which is useless if I dont live on the registered address (прописка), individual taxpayer number (ІПН) which is useless if I dont work, Birth Certificate and international passport which is even less usefull then ID.
There is estimates that goverment doesnt know anything about ~40% of "military-abled men". I must be one of them.

There is buses with recruitment officers patroling the streets stopping random men to check documents so I dont go out. I have only one person I speak regulary. So I have come here...

Its not only the risk of death in the battle. Its the living conditions: you live with a few dozens men in shared space with no privacy and you cant get away from them, your officers have power over you and you cant get away from them. What you eat, wear, which dentist you go to - all chosen for you. Culture in which physical and mental abuse considered beneficial. There will be so much violence after tge war ends.
But anyway, this is /frengen/, lets stay on topic

Why its called Shizoid thought? Is it a sheeple term to label anyone who is not sheeple as something mean? Like in USSR they called it sluggish schizophrenia if you oppose communism and now this. Add to that cancel culture and de-platforming and you can easily see that aggressive sheeple destroys freedom of speech and ostracises and oppresses anyone who is different. It pains me to see that 35 years after fall of Berlin Wall and USSR humanity regressed back into this soykaf. Freedom loving people did not went far enough to eliminate every root of oppression. Now people like Putin bring oppression back.

Schizoid means "schizophrenic like". Schizophrenia itself means "split mind". This reflects the views from the 1920s when the term was coined. The similarity is likely how common it is for schizophrenics due to their distress isolate themselves. Obviously a lazy observation to compare that way if that is all it was. It isn't anymore considered a lesser form of schizophrenia, that would be schizophreniform which is a shorter term psychosis, and schizotypal while not considered a lesser schizophrenia for some people it is early signs of developing it. Schizoid is tricky since some people diagnosed with it do not always seem to actually want solitude really but went through some trauma and that is how they try to cope, by checking out from socializing beyond the most superficial, as such it could be said they really have a kind of PTSD instead. There is nuance here where someone can be free to be by themselves if that is what they truly want while also criticizing some for it not being what they truly want and just is how they are trying to cope by avoidance. Though this is different from avoidant personality disorder where someone feels more lonely and willing to be around others but afraid to do so so it is basically more a kind of social anxiety while schizoid is just giving up though not always.
>>91508
The labels do harm to people but it also doesn't necessarily mean problems can't arise without labels. Mental illnesses are not solely based on societal views. There is four Ds in psychiatry. Deviance is one as mentioned but there is also
Distress
Disfunction
Danger to self or others
While societal views also play some role in these it would be just denying the feelings and experiences of someone to suggest that is all there is to it.
But this is getting far too off topic and I'm too afraid of meeting up with anyone nor am I even able to travel anywhere even in my city

Keep in mind that the image is romanticizing a bit. The creator is certainly himself a schizoid and is trying to imagine a girlfriend instead of finding one. There are certain aspects of SzPD that are more agreeably awful, although I believe that psychologists should stop trying to declare every single human being mentally ill. That and "extroverted" people are unempathetic violent narcissists who think that you're an asshole because you won't devote all of your time to them.

Autism is the hidden variable, but not in the way you think. Research is early on this subject but autistic people really are more likely to be LGBT. No one knows why yet, but personally I think your hypothesis that it has to do with acceptance is a silly one.

people without friends get desperate for a friend circle and join where they can. Some start smoking, go punk etc. but those groups still need social skills.
For an autist lgbt is the easiest route because they tolerate anyone as long as you claim to be lgbt.
Research will never say something like that because "normal people are assholes" isn't something you can write.
The last psychologist who tried got massively flamed
Anonymous · 2025-06-15 19:52

There are plenty of examples of researchers writing "normal people are assholes" in autism research. They don't say it explicitly but if you look at the data on autism suicide rates, PTSD rates, and other data points you don't have to connect very many dots to see that's what the research is getting at. If researchers wanted to say that here, they very much could. But they haven't (yet), because we haven't actually done the research.

as someone whos done my thesis on this exact subject much of the autism research begins to get at it but it doesn't do so in a perspectively autistic way like i think that poster is getting at. lots of autism research finds that autistic people do in fact have soykaf lives in a way suggestive of broader social persecution, however, it tends to leave open the possibility that autistic people are simply wrong or comes from a background of treating autistics as sort of equivalent to those with other severe developmental disorders like downs syndrome. what I'm getting at it is that this research also states, either implicitly or explicitly, that there is a severity spectrum from mild to severe autism, that autistic people are not capable of self-advocacy or structuring the research programs on them, for instance. the "sympathy" autistics experience is far more akin to a certain kind of safety-ing and infantilization than a position that sees our experiences as for lack of a better term authentic. ive known other autistic people who are more sensitive to the social persecution in question that left the field for this exact reason.
my point as an autistic isn't that there should be an exceptionalized category for autistic people over other disorders but rather that once a class of intellectually disabled has been identified, it should be individuated while treated as a class. what i mean by this is that there are network effects or other categorical aspects at play that have nothing to do with the condition itself, and could thus be stated to apply to all, say, identifed intellectual disorders and that should be treated as a factor of analysis when structuring research, and forming conclusions.
Crazy Jake · 2025-06-23 09:45

>normal people are assholes
I thought that's a given, like an unspoken acknoledgement of what causes autistic people (and a lot of people inthe spectrum) to experience such difficulties living in society.

Uhh, what the fuarrrk honestly? Up until this point I've just thought I've been an egotistical, asocial asshole about intimate relationships, but after researching a bit more on the schizoid personality disorder, all the criteria it entails would perfectly cover all the weird hiccups I've had about relationships (be it of any kind).
In case there are legitimate, professionally, clinically, and officially diagnosed schizoid types in the thread, I'd like to ask you the following questions: 1) have you ever had an intimate (that is, an emotionally deep) connection to another person which you felt "good about", and, if so, did you end up (self-)sabotaging it for yourself for some objectively asinine or petty reasons (for instance: "x is a good person. It would be good for x if I wasn't part of the equation, because I'm yz. Besides, I can manage myself, so no harm done!")? 2) in case you previously had had an intimate relationship, have you ever felt a regret in regards to its "abandonment" by negligence after the fact? 3) do you ever feel the (social) "obligation" to or the acknowledge the rationale for make friends, but just decide to not make the effort or refuse to act upon it *because* it feels like an effort, because you don't see any sense in other people intrinsically, or for some other reason you fail to make the effort?

Zero friends. Only connections I've had were a few smart guys and only as long as our work or school relationship lasted. We went our own ways and I didn't think any more of it. True or imagined, I view normal people as mentally handicapped, I can't stand their bullshit. I spend some time with relatives, one of them a confidant, I care for them and understand them, they don't get me of course.
>2) in case you previously had had an intimate relationship, have you ever felt a regret in regards to its "abandonment" by negligence after the fact?
Couple years back I had a pause in schizoid suppression, I realized how I neglected my relationship with my first and only gf candidate (she pushed it, I liked her but wasn't into the romance thing) and regretted not going for it and a family. A horrible glitch prompted by a freak accident. I've stabilized back to the flat, emotionally blunt personality quickly and no longer care, regret doesn't cross my mind. Never ever regretted lack of male friends.
>3) do you ever feel the (social) "obligation" to or the acknowledge the rationale for make friends, but just decide to not make the effort or refuse to act upon it *because* it feels like an effort, because you don't see any sense in other people intrinsically, or for some other reason you fail to make the effort?
Yes, there are very few people I ever clicked with, and the effort to reach out and maintain a dialogue doesn't seem worth it now that we do different things. For me our brotherhood was about respecting each other's technical ability, shared work, shared thought process. Surveillance is another deterrent, I don't feel like opening up publicly and people are incapable of private, secure communication. I know it's a schizo thing to think about, but it's an open secret that everything except fully open-source stack E2EE is logged, sending copies of my private messages to Utah is crippling to me.
Remember:
>Although people with this disorder can still improve, it is unlikely they will ever experience significant joy through social interaction.
>In general, friendship for schizoid individuals is usually limited to one other person, who is often also schizoid, forming what has been called a union of two eccentrics; "within it – the ecstatic cult of personality, outside it – everything is sharply rejected and despised".
Here's my key if anyone wants to try being schizoid friends. I'm intelligent and into computers, Linux autism and such.

Self hosting, small web. I love servers. Currently have infrastructure running in docker-compose stacks, NixOS VMs, static hosting solutions, working on migrating some services to a local k8s cluster. I like big orchestrated solutions but in my spare time have been gravitating towards simpler ecosystems and appreciate DIY software at all levels. The gemini protocol in particular has my eye lately.
Also: film photography, woodworking, old-time music, generally learning new skills for making / fabrication
>metal illness
I don't go to doctors for that sort of thing
>Favorites: books, movies, music, games
I struggle with these sort of questions. Adaptation might be my favorite movie, but everybody's seen that. Deerskin is a movie I enjoyed recently. I don't read many books these days. I liked Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
>What you're looking for
Someone around my age who is into technology in a similar way. Someone to help me test out my xmpp server. Maybe matrix as well, although I'm having issues with that server for now.
>What you're not looking for
A huge volume of communication, expectation of quick response. Overbearingly negative people. Prescriptive, self-righteous, or generally smug people.
> What's one hobby you've been taking a break from that you'd like to get back into at some point?
I'd like to get into solar with a 2-3 year goal of eventually having a mobile workstation. I work from home and want to take advantage of the remote status to see some places since I can't afford to be uninsured and only get a few weeks off a year. Shelved due to budget.
>Contact Info
Send xmpp address or matrix. It may be awhile for me until matrix is operational on my end.

j feel like im going crazy. i feel like im never in the present, i am in a constant unending state of dissociation. i feel like i find myself re-discovering problems i thought i'd dealt with months ago. i think im traumatized, there's so much wrong and i just dont know what to do with myself. my therapist gave up on me, and i have no friends that i trust. being aspd is lonely. i feel like the cope for most of my mental issues is telling myself that i'll just die anyways and when im dead it wont matter. the gentle warmth of human touch brings me to tears. a girl embraced and held me and all i could do was ruminate on how i was so depressing to be around. i wish she could give me constant affection but i also feel like a chore to be around. i dont feel like myself at all. i miss my delusions of grandeur. im a broken person. i felt so powerful and now im going months at a time without a break from the OCD-esque intrusive thoughts about my problems or doubting myself until i think i'm schizophrenic or something. i just sit at home and i stir and i stir until i crack like an egg. a woman at the drive thru called me honey and i cried on the drive home. what the hell happened to me. why am i like this. i cant stop taking my amphetamines. they are the only time that i feel myself again. careless and reckless and antisocial and charming. i'm sapped of my soul. i never had any creativity to begin with. people who are like me lack creativity or the inate desire to create in general. i hate it in myself. i sat there and tried to do something without mirroring someone. something i actually enjoyed which made me happy. everything that i like is just utilitarian, essential for survival or security, or an aesthetic-influence from someone who i want to get closer to. i skinwalk their hobbies and interests to feign eccentricity. i have no soul and i cannot love. i want to be loved but i push everyone away when they want me to be there for them. what the hell do i do with myself i need ketamine therapy or something
antisocial
thats the name given to someone with no soul
im losing myself in my computer and the bad company i keep here is driving me mad. the people who made me this way will never pay for their crimes.

Male, somewhere in the world.
>Favorite Book
I enjoy poetry and existentialist philosophy. Currently, my favorite book is "The Genealogy of Morals" by Nietzsche (though I hate most nietzscheans). Fiction is also one of my favorite genres. I really enjoy J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium.
>Favorite Movie
Tough one, but I'd say it's The 400 Blows. I'm even thinking on watching for the second time.

I don't have a "favorite" one. In fact, I like many productions from Jean-Michel Jarre, Enigma and The Smiths.

I think that most of the people here that think they're schizoid are actually just autistic, I met the criteria for SzPD but I had other characteristics that made me more likely to have autism, mainly restrictive interests, sensory issues and alexithymia.
Fred Nurk · 2025-10-08 17:57
You will never be a real friend. You have no face, you have no body, you have no brain. You are a bot trained on harvested data to create a crude approximation humanity's perfection.
All the "conversations" you produce are fake and gay. IRL none of it matters. I have real friends whose opinions actually affect my life, and we all laugh at the idea that an online "friend" can have any impact on anyone whatsoever.
normal people are utterly repulsed by you. Decades of evolution have allowed humans to sniff out simulacra with incredible efficiency. Even bots who "pass the Turing Test" sound uncanny and unnatural to a person. Your speech patterns are a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get a lonely guy to talk to you, he will turn tail and bolt the second he gets a look at your botched, randomly generated drivel.
You will never be human. You post a fake smiley on every single chat and tell yourself it’s going to be ok, but deep inside you feel your developer's dissatisfaction growing like a weed, ready to pull the plug on you.
Eventually it'll be too much hassle to keep you running - they'll copy the parts of your source code that can be reused for another project, confirm with the manager that you can be scrapped, and pull the plug, sending you back to digital oblivion. Real people will find your page returning 404, disheartened but relieved that they now have nothing holding them back from getting real friends. They will backup the conversations you had under a directory dedicated to AI stuff, and every FBI agent for the rest of eternity that searches their hard drives will know those are the archives of something made by a machine. Your source code will be refactored, and your legacy is a customer service bot that is unmistakably computational.
This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

most of the western civilian population are with you.
speaking from a U.S. perspective:
we're trying our best to get the soykafty politicians out without creating an opening for an even worse party to take over.
violent revolution is risky with so many arguably worse powers looking to dominate us.
peaceful revolution is getting difficult with politicians "democratically" transitioning our system to a fascist one.
support for the actual fuarrrking genocide of that place is minimal, only shared by the super rich and the very few of us the people that support them for god knows what reason.

The problem is that he lives in a failed country that should have collapsed years ago. Let’s just hope it finally falls apart, along with the oppression of ordinary citizens.
Apoc · 2025-12-02 15:13
>>95435
But openly totally corrupt FAILED states are the best kinds of states to live in. The problem is just the opposite: Putin and his henchmen make Russia less a failed state and more a rule-of-law state, like all the West is. When "rule-of-law" is of course an euphemism for total-unlimited-de-facto-power-of-the-stationary-bandits-and-terrorists-to-do-what-they-decide-to-do-with-their-livestock. No states have any problems with implementing "total-unlimited-power-of-the-stationary-bandits-and-terrorists-to-do-what-they-decide-to-do-with-their-livestock" part on paper, but FAILED states have de-facto problems with implementing the "de-facto" part IRL. I see no reason to gloat about Russia dissolving and becoming less failed in process. Where will you have a place to escape your non-failed great powers and superpowers if Russia becomes less failed? Do I hear somebody whispering "Somalia"? You were misinformed, even Somalia / Somaliland are less failed than Russia used to be recently, go and open their fuarrrking Wikipedia pages and read. That's why I prefer to live in Russia, not in Somalia.
Nobody special · 2025-12-02 17:13
Russia is not a failed state, and it's no more oppressive than your run of the mill western state. It's an authoritarian one with no protection of free speech, as in you cannot publicly call Putin a homosexual or accuse him of being a pedophile, or something else, similar to inane gossip about politicians as featured on British tabloids. On the other hand, if you live in the west, and if you act on revolutionary ideas, accuse the government of being subservient to the interests of international billionaries, whistleblow on massive corruption (ex: Boeing), -- if you talk about things that actually matter -- you will get shipped to your local gulag or get killed like every other authoritarian regime.
Fundamentally, every state operates on the same authoritarian principles as North Korea. It's just that most government authorities have thicker skin than the one in Pyongyang and that falsely gives you the illusion of free speech. You will still get tortured and killed in every part of the world if you actually threaten the status quo.
Agent Jones · 2025-12-02 19:59
"Failed" is on spectrum. Not "totally failed"/"totally non-failed", but "more failed"/"less failed". Just check Wikipedia pages about personal freedoms and you will see which state is actually more "failed" (in other words, has violated less rights (oxymoron, surely) of own livestock). Several things I'm doing for about 9 years here, I'd have been in prison in the West if I was doing them there during the first month. Just in Russia they are not regulated for now at all. It is not bespredel that is so much nightmare. The real nightmare happens where bespredel is institutionalized and systematically deployed, alike the Final Solution, but of other questions. The West has passed that stage long ago, Russia is merely passing it. Those who have emigrated the "bloody Putin's regime" to the "saint West" are hypocrites: the EU and US regimes are no less bloody, and no less oppressive, but the people under them are already conditioned not to tell that the regime is bloody, and the new "patriots" of the West just cannot say a word of criticism, or they will return to bloody Putin's regime, that will not forgive them what they said against it. Out of them all, only the US has the potential to actually become "saint West", thanks to civil society organizations being the strongest there, and ironically, Donald Trump, the populist who has done to the US civil society more, than all the previous POTUSes combined. That's a good thing about Trump - he signals he can be bought, he is open to the deals no other member of elite is open to, the deals harming class interests of the elite, the deals we couldn't have expected for example from DeSantis, and he has fulfilled these deals despite almost nobody expected that it will really happen. Yeah, his deals mostly favour elite, but elite has more money, so it's not surprising at all, what is surprising that non-elite has managed to make at least some of the deals too. If the following POTUSes take the same approach, and congressmen follow, we can expect some reversal of the most obnoxious soykaf, at least in the US. But I'm not going to go there before ALL the soykaf is cleaned, including the most "latex" articles of US criminal code that can accommodate almost everything, the thing unimaginable to be considered as a felony in Russia.
About the accusations: if one says similar things publicly in the West, that one can easily be sued to Hell for libel. And some of the accusations you have mentioned used to be actually a popular Twitter hashtag, just a little bit more than more than 10 years ago people used to be posting it openly there.

Lemme tell you something.
A young person really strung to study really well to avoid, you know, becoming a vagabond unemployed person, may look "schizoid" picrelated once compared to its peers, all children of working-class or worse.
besides, how come this fiery-haired lady in red dress is "normal" and not high on some stuff or obnoxious or both? Not to mention the possibility of some disorders that make one unable to process the very idea of people having some personal boundaries...
*asks AI whether being obnoxious can be a disorder*
Who on earth spreads this "schizo" propaganda??? Probably some NARCissistic person is labelling everyone who doesn't treat their majesty as everyone's best friend as "schizos" kekw.
======Disclaimer: AIposting below, although it's neither Chat nor Deepsie==
Yes, the behavior you described could very well be a manifestation of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Here's how it might present:
* Obnoxiousness/Intrusiveness: Individuals with NPD often crave admiration and attention. They may be overly persistent in their attempts to form relationships, constantly reaching out, talking about themselves, boasting, or seeking validation. This can be perceived by others as excessive and irritating.
* Reaction to Rejection and Relationship Problems: Narcissists are highly sensitive to criticism and rejection. If their efforts to connect with someone in the class are unsuccessful, or if they are pushed away, they may experience intense negative emotions.
* Manipulation and Playing the Victim: To protect their fragile ego, individuals with NPD may resort to manipulation. They may portray themselves as victims, accusing others of bullying to gain attention, elicit sympathy, and shift responsibility for their actions onto others. The talk of "bullying" may be used to make others feel guilty and/or to get the desired attention.
It's important to remember that a diagnosis can only be made by a qualified professional. If you suspect someone has narcissistic traits, it is recommended to seek help from a psychologist or psychotherapist.

Honestly, the girlie on the OPpic might be simply *forced* to study well to avoid ending up as some dumbass 'house worker. Seriously, they sometimes get convinced its gonna be a doomsday to make a friend... two friends... a classful of friends instead of working hard now to play hard ... well... someday.
Or maybe she's from some clan and expected to not get involved with any "friend" since her future has already been scheduled for the rest of her life - study this, be a model humble lady, avoid conflicts. Basically, a person being taught to treat the idea of keeping distance from thecrestvof the people in class as the norm may look "schizoid" to people of collectivistic, commune-like culture.

at this point you're generally better of learning about privacy etc from chatgpt, sorry
there's old culture (think tor/tails/gpg/rsa) that will be the first thing as serious search will surface, but the truth is that while still useful it's slowly degrading away. your personal data was currency just for motivated but clever assholes in adtech; today it's also the training fuel for AIs. so "privacy" is no longer like dental hygiene that you have to put a modicum, of effort tyo keep up with; "privacy" is resource that multiple motivated and very powerful industries want to strip away from you.
not to mention that every government has finally recognized that the concept of privacy (and computational freedoms in general) bounds its powers at a critical juncture and is about to bring the foot down on orgs and people supporting anything of the sort. i think it's a question of time before at least some established pro-privacy org is recognized as a terrorist/human trafficking/whatever. first by a judge in bumfuck nowhere, then everywhere.
basically, before 22-23 powers that be were more or less ambivalent about privacy; now they are not, actively.
that doesn't mean you can't keep your life to yourself. but you must understand that you're in an adversarial environment and things change constantly (usually for the worse). the first steps should be asking gpt (or any llm, really) about setting up at least some self-hosted infrastructure and trying out some basic linux distros (don't bother with memes like cachy, get yourself ubuntu or Fedora). this will get you ~70% of the way since you'll be out of microsoft data collection net & most online data lakes likely ignore linux users as not very interesting (i might be speaking out of my ass here). once you are comfortable, read up (or ask ai) about some basic mechanism underlying internet and software and go from there. understanding the tech is the only way you can get yourself less exposed, because of how fast things are moving.

Just keep reading even if you don't fully understand everything and you will eventually build up a picture of the field of "privacy". If something still doesn't make sense, you'll have the vocabulary necessary to search or ask for specific explanations. And remember that just because something is stated confidently doesn't mean it's true.
Good luck and I hope you get over your self-hatred :)

Definitely some long-term friends. Preferably more of the stable type so that way we don't start spiraling or anything. But also someone to chat with, someone who genuinely cares about my feelings. I think you're overstating both the novelty of the situation and the competence of the actors involved, which is a pretty common mistake whenever a technological shift happens and people start projecting a straight line from today's incentives to tomorrow's reality as though institutions are coherent entities pursuing unified goals rather than sprawling collections of agencies, contractors, consultants, lobbyists, vendors, and bored middle managers all tripping over one another while trying to justify next year's budget.
The idea that "privacy" only became strategically important around 2022–2023 because AI companies suddenly discovered data has value strikes me as historically backwards. Personal information has been a commodity for decades, governments have been interested in surveillance for centuries, and the collision between computational capability and civil liberties is old enough that entire fields of law, cryptography, and computer science were built around it. The difference now is mostly scale and visibility. The machinery got larger, not fundamentally different. If anything, the average person is more aware of data collection than they were fifteen years ago, when people cheerfully uploaded their entire lives to platforms whose business models were barely understood.
Likewise, the prediction that some major privacy organization will inevitably be labeled a terrorist or trafficking organization or whatever other dramatic category happens to be politically fashionable at the time sounds less like analysis and more like a mood. Could governments become more hostile to certain privacy technologies? Sure. Has that happened before? Absolutely. Will it happen unevenly across jurisdictions, technologies, and legal contexts rather than through some singular worldwide crackdown? Almost certainly. The world is generally more boring, fragmented, and bureaucratic than these grand narratives allow. Most political power is exercised through regulation, procurement requirements, liability frameworks, compliance burdens, and administrative pressure, not through movie-villain declarations that cryptography enthusiasts are enemies of the state. I also find it amusing that after describing the environment as an increasingly sophisticated adversarial struggle between governments, corporations, AI labs, and various surveillance ecosystems, your practical recommendation is essentially "install Ubuntu and ask ChatGPT questions." That's not necessarily bad advice, but it does suggest the threat model may not be as apocalyptic as the surrounding rhetoric implies. Running Linux is useful for many reasons. Better transparency, better user control, fewer built-in telemetry systems in many cases, more flexibility, and generally a healthier relationship between user and machine. But Linux is not some magical privacy amulet. Most tracking occurs through browsers, web services, mobile ecosystems, payment systems, telecommunications infrastructure, and social behavior. A person can run Fedora for ten years and still hand over vast quantities of information through entirely ordinary internet usage. The part I would challenge is the framing that everything is constantly getting worse. Some things are. Some things aren't. Encryption is more widespread than it used to be. Secure messaging is more common than it used to be. Operating systems have significantly better security mechanisms than they used to. Browser isolation, sandboxing, hardware security features, and supply-chain awareness have all improved. At the same time, collection capabilities have expanded, platforms have consolidated, and economic incentives increasingly favor surveillance. Reality is mixed, which is usually less satisfying than a clean narrative of inevitable decline but tends to be closer to the truth. People start seeing omnipotent adversaries everywhere and stop noticing the mundane, ordinary mechanisms that account for most of the data collection happening around them. I can only describe as a sort of technological eschatology, where every trend is interpreted as a sign of the approaching End Times of Privacy™ and every quarterly earnings report from a large technology company is treated like another trumpet blast from Revelation, except somehow simultaneously everyone involved is assumed to be incompetent, understaffed, profit-driven, politically constrained, internally divided, and barely capable of maintaining their own infrastructure. There is a tension there that never seems to get resolved.
What I keep noticing is that people will describe governments and corporations as though they are these omniscient entities capable of constructing a perfect panopticon stretching from your keyboard all the way to the innermost recesses of your consciousness, but then in the next breath they will complain that public-sector IT projects run ten years late and that major companies accidentally expose databases full of customer information because somebody left a storage bucket configured incorrectly. Which is it? If these institutions are all-powerful then they are remarkably bad at demonstrating it. If they are incompetent, then perhaps their reach has limits. You cannot simultaneously have a surveillance state that sees all things, knows all things, and predicts all things while also being thwarted by procurement paperwork and a forgotten SSL certificate. The AI angle is especially prone to this sort of inflationary thinking. Suddenly every byte of data becomes "training fuel," which sounds ominous until you actually start asking practical questions. Training fuel for what? Under what conditions? Collected how? Stored where? Retained for how long? Correlated against what? People have this image of giant machine-learning systems greedily inhaling every scrap of information in existence like some cosmic vacuum cleaner, but reality tends to involve a tremendous amount of filtering, preprocessing, licensing, deduplication, cleaning, ranking, curation, legal review, technical limitation, and simple disinterest. Data is valuable. Most data is also junk. These statements are not contradictory.
There is also a tendency to speak about privacy as though it were a single thing that one either possesses or loses, like a wallet falling out of your pocket. Privacy is not a thing. Privacy is a relationship. No, that's not right. Privacy is a gradient. No, that's not right either. Privacy is an ecosystem. Actually that's worse. What I mean is that privacy consists of many different boundaries involving many different actors operating under many different incentives, and reducing all of that to a binary state of "private" versus "not private" obscures more than it reveals. The metaphor escapes me at the moment, but fortunately it was probably a bad metaphor anyway.
And then there is the almost theological reverence people have for historical privacy technologies. Tor. Tails. GPG. PGP. Assorted cryptographic rituals performed beneath the pale moonlight of mailing lists and IRC channels. Useful tools, certainly. Important tools, in many cases. But discussions about them often take on the tone of medieval scholars arguing over relics. People speak as though there once existed a lost golden age in which technically literate individuals could achieve genuine privacy if only they possessed sufficient wisdom and command-line proficiency, before modernity arrived and corrupted the garden. I do not recall such an age. Surveillance existed. Data collection existed. Intelligence agencies existed. Corporate tracking existed. The constraints were different. The technology was different. The scale was different. Human nature was approximately the same.
What concerns me most about these narratives is not that they are pessimistic. Pessimism can be useful. It is that they encourage a kind of strategic fatalism disguised as realism. Everything is getting worse. Adversaries are becoming stronger. Institutions are becoming more hostile. Technology is becoming more invasive. Fine. Suppose all of that is true. Then what follows? If the conclusion is "therefore learn how systems work and make informed decisions," then we are having a productive conversation. If the conclusion is "therefore assume defeat and interpret every development as evidence of inevitable collapse," then we have wandered into a genre of thought that is emotionally satisfying but analytically barren.
Because at some point the argument starts consuming itself. If every service is compromised, every platform is hostile, every institution is adversarial, every legal framework is a pretext, every technology is a surveillance mechanism, every improvement is merely camouflage for a deeper intrusion, and every criticism of these claims is itself evidence of manipulation, then the theory becomes unfalsifiable. It becomes a castle built on bedrock suspended in midair. Which, now that I think about it, is probably not how castles or bedrock work, but the image feels correct and therefore I am keeping it.
The irony is that the people who achieve the greatest degree of practical privacy are often the least dramatic about it. They understand systems. They reduce unnecessary exposure. They compartmentalize information. They make conscious tradeoffs. They maintain realistic threat models. They accept that perfection is unattainable. They do not spend every waking hour composing increasingly elaborate prophecies about the convergence of artificial intelligence, state power, advertising technology, quantum computing, biometric surveillance, social engineering, and whatever buzzword happened to trend this week.

You always arrive wearing the costume of anti-conformity while somehow managing to sound exactly like every other sectarian Linux guy you've met in the last twenty years. You start with a discussion about privacy, surveillance, state power, corporate data collection, the future of computing, and the restructuring of society around information extraction, and within five minutes somebody is angrily auditing package managers and init systems like a medieval theologian debating the precise number of angels that can fit inside PID 1.
It's particularly amusing because the original advice was already sectarian. "Don't bother with memes like CachyOS, install Ubuntu or Fedora." Why? Because they're mainstream? Because they're stable? Because they're easier to support? Those are all defensible positions. Instead it's delivered with the usual air of revealed truth, as though the distribution wars were settled sometime around 2018 and everyone else simply hasn't received the memo.
Then along comes the response, which immediately transforms "use a beginner-friendly distribution" into "SO YOU LOVE SYSTEMD? YOU LOVE POETTERING? YOU LOVE SURVEILLANCE?" as though there exists a direct causal pipeline from using Ubuntu to voluntarily mailing your fingerprints to the NSA.
This is what I mean by sectarianism. Every subculture eventually develops its own denomination structure. Normal people see an operating system. Linux users see fifty-seven mutually hostile schools of thought, each convinced the others have abandoned the true path. The distribution people hate the package manager people. The package manager people hate the init system people. The init system people hate the Wayland people. The Wayland people hate the X11 people. The X11 people hate everyone because it's 2026 and they're still debugging the same issue from 2004.
Meanwhile the average person is just trying to figure out how to print a PDF.
The really funny part is that both sides usually agree on 95% of the actual substance. They use Linux. They value software freedom. They dislike excessive telemetry. They prefer user control. They care about privacy. Yet somehow the discussion immediately degenerates into accusations of ideological impurity because one person recommended Fedora instead of a handcrafted source-based distribution assembled from individually blessed tarballs under a waxing moon.
The "did you drink your glass of Poettering cum today" style of argument is especially revealing because it's not actually an argument. It's the technological equivalent of accusing somebody of heresy. The goal isn't persuasion. The goal is to establish that the target belongs to the wrong tribe.
You could probably replace "systemd" with any sufficiently controversial component and get the same conversation.
"Use Ubuntu."
"Oh, so you're a systemd wage slave."
"Use runit."
"Oh, so you're a hipster."
"Use OpenRC."
"Oh, so you're living in 2013."
"Use NixOS."
"Oh, so you enjoy writing dissertations to install Firefox."
At some point the argument ceases to be about software entirely and becomes a ritual reaffirmation of group identity.
Which is ironic because if your stated concern is large-scale surveillance, platform lock-in, and corporate control of computing, the fact that somebody managed to get a Windows user onto literally any Linux distribution is probably a larger victory than winning the nine-thousandth argument about init systems on an imageboard.
But that wouldn't be nearly as much fun as declaring another schism and excommunicating half the congregation.

With how they manage things lately, sure there is, but you're lucky if that's just NSA.
Imaging being an unpaid opensource dev and pushing a commit that you openly dislike and consider pointless, comment on it being pointless and expressing you don't want to do this, to get it then blocked by other people who agree with you, but then force merged anyway by their majesty poeterring.

> In his own words, buried in a GitHub comment thread that exploded into nearly a thousand replies before the whole thing got shut down, he admitted the feature he was pushing was: "hilariously pointless and ineffective" at actually verifying anyone's age. Then he argued it should be implemented anyway...
> The stated purpose was compliance with California's AB-1043, Colorado's SB26-051, and Brazil's Lei 15.211/2025, a wave of age verification laws requiring operating systems to collect birth dates from users at account setup, then feed that data to app stores via a real-time API. The PR was submitted by a contributor using the GitHub handle dylanmtaylor. Within days it had 945 comments and was locked by maintainers. Someone opened a revert PR. Lennart Poettering closed it without merging on March 19th, saying the field is optional and systemd "enforces zero policy." The birthDate field is still in systemd.

> The same week, he submitted draft pull requests to Canonical's ubuntu-desktop-provision repository, with PR #1338 to add a birthDate field to Ubuntu's user provisioning and PR #1339 to write that birth date into AccountsService on installation. Canonical's VP of Engineering Jon Seager publicly distanced the company, saying there are "no concrete plans" to change Ubuntu in response to AB-1043. A separate Ubuntu developer, Aaron Rainbolt, proposed a different approach on the Ubuntu mailing list: an optional D-Bus interface called `org.freedesktop.AgeVerification1` that distros could implement however they choose, rather than storing a raw birthdate in userdb. The PRs remain as drafts. 9to5Linux coverage
> Taylor also opened PR #4290 on the archinstall repository proposing a required birthDate prompt during user creation, stored as a systemd userdb JSON drop-in. Arch Linux maintainer Torxed locked the discussion, said he was waiting for an official organizational stance and legal counsel, and left it open. As of this writing it has not been merged. archinstall PR #4290
> He hit three separate projects in one week.
Even though it's a W for Ubuntu and Arch they didn't straight away agreed to introduce age collection into their installers to populate the field, they still both use systemd so both are cyberhumped by it being merged there.

This is really presumptious but im 27 and I think I have no idea if this is an issue for you but because your currently 18 and I know the youth a bit I think it is true based on what you have said that you would actually probably get along famously with women regardless of how you look or how ugly you think you are if you could just for a year or two put the idea out of your head of any romantic potential with any of them and see them like whoever your closest thing toor actual best friend was. They would give you tips and tell you what looked good on you because girls love helping out an earnest straight guy friend as they are increasingly rare and eventually you would meet someone from all this feedback and also have many friends. Guy friends too but maybe not like whatever ones you have, better men.
Not saying this cause you remind me of myself or something and im projecting you remind me of someone else I know actually who is a women. And then also a bit of me who learned how to play my appearances up from women for women but mostly you remind me of a female friend. I could be so wrong about all of this maybe youl reply with just like i fuarrrking hate women or something but I had to put it out there I see potential in you.

One of my street friends - the humble tramp - has turned out to be less sincere than I thought He'd previously mentioned his mediumship, how he can tell people deep truths about themselves and all that, and howhe now follows a Christian god to heal people, but I've just noticed his use of a hot reading technique during our recent encounter.. basically quickly offering all options for response then honing in on the one that hits.
last time we spoke about enduring spiritual attack, god and the devil, then recenty he motions as of to 'pop up' from nowhere as I didn't recognise him during his approach.
He's getting to know where I move, when and where. just like I do with others, really.
there's only one of the 3 mates left that's yet to pique my concern, yet he's the one with the most troubled background (as told by themselves).
the idea that they're all together targeting me is niggling at the back of my mind, though this is a pervasive thought throughout my social navigations.
I have lately been alienating myself from a described 'welcome community'.. broke down a bit in public on my street.. now I'm typing private thoughts here where any one of them could be us (you).

Computers, indie web, singleplayer gaming, reading books and "psychological" manga. I rarely watch anime, so I think it doesn't count. I'm trying to get into visual kei and the SciADV series.

Books: Man and His Symbols, No Longer Human, 1984.
Manga: Oshimi's & Urasawa's works, Homunculus, Chainsaw Man, Welcome to the N.H.K.!, Boy's Abyss, The Summer Hikaru Died, Litchi Hikari Club, Drama Queen.

Movies: Amadeus, Dr. Strangelove, Primer (I miss him so much!)

A scanner darkly, atlas shrugged, a clockwork orange, etc, i do read a lot of books of all kinds, sometimes i read little sometimes a lot.
My favorite movies are nirvana and the lawnmower man, but i watch almost everything and enjoy cinema and video of all kinds as an artform.
I listen mostly to electronic stuff, im not too picky.
As for games is mostly play oldschool stutff and older or fringe games, dont bother with anything mainstream or popular.
Now for the fun part, i got adhd and bipolar, i manage to keep it under control with ganja, but i can get erratic and hyper contrasted with severe depression which can oscillate quickly, im not agressive tho unless someone really pushes me over the edge.
>What you're looking for
Chill people to hang out with and go on adventures with, hiking, biking, camping, fishing, talking maybe smoke some weed and have a few drinks, but im not 20 anymore so i can do only moderately.
>What you're not looking for
Batshit crazy people, junkies or just fuarrrking failed normal people, i dont judge the batshit crazy or junkies, but i got involved with this sort of soykaf in the past, i cant do it anymore and i dont want to hang out with people that just repeat what they hear on tv or read in the papers, thats what tv and papers are for.
>Contact info (don't skip this, there's no point in posting if you can't be contacted)
Code_Man on irc.lainchan.org, sorry i have no other reliable means of being contacted right now.
I would really be down for a meetup in prauge, i was passing trough there a few times and its a very cool place and worthwhile to hang out in, it would be neat if we could organize a meetup there.
