Coping Mechanisms

Nameless · 2025-04-25 10:00
How do my fellow Lainons cope? I just gained 8lbs this week from stress eating, and I realized that's a huge problem of mine that needs to be addressed. The coping mechanisms I've used in the past no longer work for me. I no longer find joy in activities like playing video games and consuming large amounts of sugary food and drink is just not healthy. Drugs are equally not healthy, and neither is becoming a gambling addict or alcoholic. So leeching off of the community here, what are your coping mechanisms and have you noticed that as you've gotten older they've become less reliable?

>>90039 3 kg is nothing, and I'm stuck around 50 kg (110 lbs), whenever I eat junk food I worry about my guts fuarrrking up so I tend to abstain from it. I don't even have any games to play, and I don't feel like doing it either, I'd rather just watch a streamer playing that game instead, and I don't have any Google Play apps installed (since they gain control over your installed apps), I just habitually browse the web, trying to find something interesting, like new threads, or seeking videos on Invidious, occasionally watching series for free (because I never want to pay for streaming services) but none of it in particular seems worthwhile. I just need to clean my entire home, because the clutter makes me feel psychotic, then I'll get back to my computer. Programming on your mobile phone is such a pain in the ass. Whenever I speak my mind freely online, it always feels like some out there try to take advantage of the available info (for financial motives?) instead of genuinely helping out others. I'm chronically depressed but I still do not understand those who smoke, do drugs, or drink alcohol, and especially gamblers falling in debt, I feel like I'm going to die too soon either way but I still wouldn't wanna risk ruining myself further. I can't help but to ponder on lost cultural eras (early 2000s and way before that), how everyone around the world used to be, since people seem to be in a really soykafty mood these days. I can't even get off to porn any much longer as a coping mechanism without thinking about the individuals themselves who were behind it, it seems more and more like a complete waste of time to me now, a community built around deluding themselves into believing that it's healthy and natural (because it keeps the money flowing). Social interactions should be done more often in real life, not through screens with people you don't even know, and I don't care if you're an introvert, it just doesn't feel like the right path to me for everyone to take.
Lord Nikon · 2025-04-25 11:25
>>90039 for me it was booze and video games, worked until a little after my 30th birthday I started drinking mainly due to work stress and didn't think it was a problem until I had a nasty episode of GERD and realized that I'd been spending almost every single Saturday completely soaked for more than three years at first it was fine, just a bit of fun (and it was a lot less alcohol, something like a single bottle of wine or a six pack spread out over the whole weekend), but as time went on it got less and less enjoyable until I was pretty much only doing it out of habit (and it grew to the point where I was buying a handle every other week, I still have about a quarter-full of whisky sitting on my desk from when I finally stopped cold turkey, which itself really fuarrrking sucked) now I've got nothing that I really enjoy, I weigh 290lb and I feel like soykaf all the time, in case anyone needed yet another anecdotal reason to not become an alcoholic

>>90039 meditation and spirituality is unironically what you need. observe how all of this bullshit happens in the space of consciousness and how sensory pleasure basically controls and shapes your life, even if you can't totally get rid of your goyslop graving after that you will be more aware

drugs but less than they used to be. Its sort of funny but video games used to be a unhealthy cope for me but since quitting a lot of drugs its become a pretty healthy one where I just play 2-3 hours a night some nights. i try to keep busy during the day and if i have a day off i clean or go on a random outing somewhere by myself. i have friends but im not great at including others in activities i make up often just cause i dont think they would be fun for other people. Sometimes its a lot of just meandering around and stopping into establishments and not buying anything or talking to strangers. my last and most powerful is probably obsessing over and taking care of someone. i try to always have someone in my life that I think is like god but simultaneously keep them at arms length a bit because i have more fun imagining say dating this person and getting very excited every time i get to spend time with them vs if I actually dated them and moved in with them the magic would be lost. even if I am dating someone I still do this, ive gotten enough therapy to not be visibly weird or obsessed or think about them all the time everyday; but ive just sort of made peace with it being something that gives me a lot of drive and hope and motivates me to better myself and it just seems to always be what interests me the most. If im having an off day though I can get paranoid and panicked that the person died or is in danger or is thinking about not talking to me anymore and spin myself into circles for a few hours knowing that im being irrational but also just having to wait it out.
Guthrie · 2025-04-26 04:32
>>90077 Also weird one but sometimes il just sit and think about ass for like 2 hours and enter an almost meditative state i dont even masturbate during or after or anything it just fills with me peace and gives me strength. I also do this to sleep.
Turner · 2025-04-26 04:40
I am trying more healthy coping mechanisms like having an extremely well-stablished routine and stop for nothing, consuming mostly media aimed towards comedy, working out, etc. I never drank or smoke but I engaged in a lot of binge eating and gooning sessions that could go on for weeks with no end in sight
Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2025-04-26 05:40
the good news it's impossible to gain 8lbs in a week
Zero Cool · 2025-04-26 05:45
I was in your position some 10 years ago until I completely derailed and started increasing the intensity and range of coping mechanisms until I couldn't run away. Now every waking moment is filled with pain and grief. I can't run away from the shadow work as it is presented to me as a Gods mocking me through schizophrenic signs and symbols. I highly suggest you face the abyss before it consumes you. Vent off pain little by little, just enough for your body and mind not to crumble, and you will adjust.
djordy · 2025-04-26 12:46
To be honest, if you are using terms like "coping mechanisms" when thinking about your life and how to improve it, its already over for you. American psychology is poison that cages you and makes you miserable.
Agent Smith · 2025-04-26 19:21
>>90090 If your thinking in extremes like this over terms people use and word choice its already over for you because you have becomr internet poisoned and subsequebtly hyper reactionary and dismissive. you are going to do the same thing to this post but with a bunch of caveats about how its not that you wont be able to help yourself
J.C. Denton · 2025-04-27 10:32
>>90090 I have to agree with this post. Just to think in these terms is severely limiting. But then again, in an english-speaking imageboard, can anyone expect anything else? The medium in which we are is as much a vector of murrican conditioning as that vocabulary of "helplessness psychology".
Agent Richard Gill · 2025-04-28 00:45
>>90090 Most people aren't blessed with happy lives, even those who appear to be happy are putting on a mask to others or are delusional about their own lives. Many people are effectively just waiting to die, so seeing "life improvement" as mere "coping mechanisms" makes sense. Though even for those, hoping for mere "coping mechanisms" isn't helpful, even if that's the goal its more useful to think in terms of "life improvement". As "coping mechanisms" are fragile mechanisms that inevitably break, leaving you wondering why you even bothered. So its better to just try to improve life where you can, and avoid pretense and overextending yourself.
Hououin Kyouma · 2025-04-28 06:45
>>90044 Unironically this. Also have a journal to note down daily thoughts. What helped me the most even more than meditation is not being the center of everything, caring for someone/something else really moves me into becoming a better person, I started caring for my dog walking at least 3x (due to homeoffice it's easier for me), started my garden and taking care of my wife due to some health issues. And to do all of this I need to be well for them.
SHODAN · 2025-04-28 08:26
Music. It helps silence unproductive looping thoughts. It distracts. Journals are nice for forcing focus. When your internal monologue is being too adhd you can externalize it and put a stop to those attention blinks or whatever the fuarrrk.
djordy · 2025-04-28 08:58
>>90101 The terms and concepts you use to think about life matter. When someone talks about "coping mechanisms" I just know their mind has been influenced by garbage psychology on the internet. I think "how do I live well?" is already a much better question than "how do i cope?" or "what are good coping mechanisms?".

>>90039 Running, cycling around at night looking at the empty city, more running, lying in bed listening to random soykaf on bandcamp, more running, photographing trash, writing blog posts I'll never publish, writing random soykaf in my notebook, hunting for rare street stickers, more running. You sound like you have too much free time and nothing to fill it with. Put on a raincoat, go outside and pick a direction. Walk until you're lost, then walk back. Drawing is good for burning energy. I used to draw for hours before I was exhausted. Now I can barely last a few minutes. Still, it is a good problem. You must consciously identify where to apply shapes and colors. Just get a lean app.

I don't believe in coping. I believe in doing things for the experience they provide rather than using them to relieve my anxiety of being alive.

>>90039 how do i cope? i use nicotine to control my stress, helps me lose weight as well. its fuarrrking terrible for me but truth be told, id be surprised if i lived a long life anyways. apart from drugs and alcohol, my only "healthy" way i cope is by skating outside, but ill usually grab some energy drinks and cigarettes so i wouldnt say its the best thing i could do for myself, but at least it gets me outside.

>>92775 >my only "healthy" way i cope is by skating outside, but ill usually grab some energy drinks and cigarettes Nice! Skating is awesome how you can ride and drink and smoke at the same time, no? And with a board, you can sit anywhere and have a table for your food too. Not to mention you can defend yourself with it. You use a regular board, a cruiser, a long, a penny perhaps?

Had some pretty wild trips on my boards too, you wouldn't believe how little you fall, even when visuals obscure your sight.. riding drunk is the most dangerous in my experience, I never had a accident but i saw friends fall pretty bad on alcohol.

I am assuming you are asking what we do to stay busy and keep the boogeyman at bay until shuteye. I really enjoy plastic models right now. It's nice to paint plastic, manipulate plastic, add plastic, take away plastic and end up with a silly plastic kit that has marks of you on it.

>>90039 The best coping mechanism IMO is unironically work. I know plenty of memes are made about wagies and their lifestyle but it's really not a bad thing. If you already have a job or you go to university then try to find a nice little job on the side, for the weekends and so on. Instead of spending your time thinking you can socialise a little bit and make some money on the side. Don't take your sidejob too seriously and let it be something light, like working in a bakery or a coffee shop or something. It forces you to become organised, clean and teaches a lot about dealing with other people.
J.C. Denton · 2026-01-20 10:08
>>96363 Work is a great way to find community *if* you aren't stuck at a job. There are a lot of very toxic workplaces and you need to be able to pick and choose who you want to interact with at work. As long as you can quit if you start getting too much disrespect, you're not a true wagie.

>>90039 A cute idea: regaining some control over my life, step by step, IS my coping mechanism. I buy canned food so know I can add canned peas/beans into our pot. I also keep my earplugs handy so I could plug my ears before going to sleep (street noises...) Even cuter idea is to ask municipals to do a thing - file a complaint or request a little add-on like a bench
John Doe · 2026-07-05 14:45
>>90039 > I just gained 8lbs this week No you didn't. It's either water retention from infolammation, or reduced intestinal motility so you have more waste in your intestines. Every time anyone talks about their weight it's almost always pure insanity.
Undisclosed · 2026-07-05 14:50
>>100189 >No you didn't. Like seriously, go pick up a 10 lb weight. You're telling me that in the course of a week your body converted and stored 8 whole pounds worth of sugars or lipids into adipose. That simply isn't possible. You probably barely ate 8 lbs of material in a week and you're actually asserting ALL of it, starch, fats, fiber, protein, mienrals and all, turned into "weight"? No, quite obviously not. What is possible is that you are inflamed and have fluid retention, or your intestine is not moving efficiently and so you have more waste in you.
