Meeting new people from the internet
Agent Richard Gill · 2024-10-12 18:34
So, how do you go about meeting new people on the internet?
I mean, 1 on 1 chats, preferably with someone you may eventually meet IRL. Is it considered creepy to message random people on social media nowdays? Is there proper etiquette to be followed?

Somehow it feels like it is simply not done. I think it's mostly a trust issue, a lot more spammers/scammers now for one. Not sure the answer, I'd also like to know.

It's not easy to find people who share common interests in the ocean of piss known as the internet because it now mostly consists of always-online social media addicts who love to mimic each other and share the same insufferable personalities. I tried all different social platforms and nothing works. You'll either end up meeting lots of those toxic people, who by the way do not want to make friends but only garner attention and a following, or you'll be talking to the wall all the time.

Dont have any actual advice, but ive made new friends thru ttrpgs. At a rate of 1 for every 10 strangers tho.
As long as ur not being a sperg and asking for a friend, messaging randos in ur interest groups seems like a rlly good idea.

Usually it involves murder with a ball-peen hammer to the skull followed by IRL mudshark poasting with your waifu.

I mean, Tinder and Grindr are both a solution to meet new people.
Sure it's for sexual/romantic experiences but if you want to speedrun your way out of loneliness, you can get a gf/bf and meet their friend group, if you are not totally socially retarded.

This lain's right. You can't make friends by either asking them or getting through mindless Discord servers even if they're about something you're interested in. Because the talk will still be superficial and won't show you anything about yourself.
You can't complain here either or cry for not having friends because even the other lains will be hesitant to approach you. They have no idea who you even are. That's why you need to engage with others doing "something" together or make something for them where you can be vulnerable and show yourself to them. I had a YouTube channel and now got around 3-4 friends and even a couple more approach me through email. Literally my best friend is actually a lainon I first met here lmao.
If you want a friend, be a friend. Stop complaining or looking for easy shortcuts, not everyone you meet will be your friend even when they talk to you and have fun.

I just was thinking about this at work. The internet is terribly boring now that there's a homogenous culture establishing itself, and it's business aligned not cool soykaf aligned.

Need a guide for those. I get matches but then people just don't respond, it's very frustrating.

That's fair, thanks for the advice!
I'm now thinking that maybe online games are my best shot. The few online friends I've made were made in games after all. I wonder what's hot and if there's any of the popular ones that I could play comfortably in Linux.

it's unfortunate, and AI certainly doesn't help.. but I'm sure there is still a way to find cool people. There's too many people in the world and I'd just like people to chat with to be honest, but am too awkward IRL to actually make friends.

Personally I believe that most online games would end up like Discord servers as long as they don't share cooperation and ways to express your personality. I used to be a Genshin addict and all the "friendships" I've made were just so superficial.
I don't like to spam stuff but I've actually talked about the way I made friends (it was through making something on the internet):

I was just browsing BBC and I stumbled across this really interesting article about something called "cosy gaming". Ever since covid, some people started meeting or just lurking in games like Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Unpacking, Stardew Valley, Sims, etc. Apparently this really helps some people feel connected, relax, and get their minds off their problems. I guess in some cases you might even meet friends this way. Here's a link to the article if anyone wants to check it out:

I was thinking Minecraft in peaceful mode with safeguards against griefing might work for this, too. I have some experience running a small Minecraft server.

>So, how do you go about meeting new people on the internet?
I used to play a certain, older online multiplayer game and fell into a small community of long-time players. I don't open up to many people, but there was one guy I ended up becoming good friends with from a server. We've been friends for about 12 years now and is one of the few people I communicate with on a regular basis.
He's asked me when I'd come out to his state to visit and I may, someday. I trust him, but I haven't traveled far outside my home state on my own before (late bloomer, if you will) and I work a lot so it would be something I'd have to schedule and take time off work for.

Nice. Seems like a pretty good channel. Hope you can grow there!
