What was the most weirdest chan/message board thread you've ever seen?
The Oracle · 2024-09-10 15:10
On this forum for something about free audio tracks or something, there were these users posting cryptic messages, I can't really remember the details since it was a few years ago but it was a really interesting rabbit hole. At the end it turned out to be 2 online friends messing around with each other or something.
Also about a month ago there was this really long confession to a murder that was also a suicide note posted on a mostly dead forum. The forum was closed down and the post wasn't archived.
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2024-09-10 18:25
Back on GameFAQs it used to be common to find random dead boards and just do weird stuff like blogging or roleplaying for thousands of posts. Last night I was on rumble and it reminded me how the internet used to feel, a bunch of casual weird behavior that was almost taken as normal. Everyone was a bit weird back then lol
Crazy Jake · 2024-09-10 23:35
Haven't seen anything noteworthy ever. This thread belongs to /hum/. It does not have anything to do with tech.

facebook is filled with old people who believe in the soykaf. Q was basically the consequence of the fappening, which accelerated how the demographics of imageboards, 4chan and 8chan in particular had been shifting towards older people with poorer media literacy, as well as reactionary 14 year olds
Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2024-09-11 13:10
I liked the thread or maybe it was a series of threads on 8chan's /monster/ where someone claimed they through an occult practice made a doll possessed and were taking photos of it. It went on a while.

Im not familiar with her so i dont know what the images were but im going to assume she was maybe at most naked which is actually legal in the US so long as it isnt genital focused in sexual manner which is kind of vaguely defined, but regardless rule 8 should be rephrased for clarity if that isnt allowed since few think of 17 year olds when they hear "child model". Not meaning to derail but there is no meta board that i am aware of.

I don't know about 8chan but that was a thing on some 4chan boards after the self-service ads were introduced. I remember for certain that [s4s] and /jp/ had a back and forth for a while, and the happenings threads on /q/ would often include details about troll ads taken out against certain boards. Probably they're still doing it.
In a similar vein, every script kiddie forum used to have threads about what ad companies let you take out malicious ads and ways to run js through ads.

On a forum of my native language (I won't tell you), a man posted a very long post about his life experience, telling how his parents tried to force him to a mental hospital and ordered the psychiatrists to force feed him schizophrenia drugs and tried to kill him afterwards. He believed that he was not mentally ill. Most comments in that thread said they didn't finished reading his post and thought he was simply delusional. But one user believed what he said and suggested that he collect his parents' hair at home to identify whether he was their biological child.
That forum is gone now, and I don't know what his current situation is.

Probably around 2010, 2011 or so, I had just discovered Tor and was on the old intel exchange site. The site was getting hammered with spam, and the users were blaming an early AI chatbot for doing it. IIRC, they had the implication that the airforce PS3 parallel computing rig was being used to power it or something.
The whole forum seemed to be convinced it was real, but I don't remember much more about it.
IIRC, they thought it was based on markov chains, and I think for very narrow topics, bots at that time could have done what was going on, so it could have been legit.
Not really inexplicable, but was kinda "weird": I actually recognized a girl in a porn dump on new fap chan back in 2013 or so. She was a girl I knew in highschool who was an original user /b/tard back in the 2000s decade. I told her I found the pics and she explained that she used to do that for self esteem back in the day. It seems she must have posted them back in 2007 or so, and then they got scooped up and archived by someone who reposted them years later when I found them.
Again, not really inexplicable, but I've never had that experience before or since.
Most of the other cool stuff I've seen is like the above: just dummies being dummies. Funny, and unusual, but not inexplicable.
Zero Cool · 2024-09-16 10:41
Probably the History-Spammer's own LambdaplusJS instance. I don't want to digress too much, but there used to be an imageboard called Nanochan on Tor, that discussed anonymity, security and that kind of stuff. I'm sure most Lains know about this. It was born out of 8/tech/ and quickly it was inhabited by avatar users. One of them was the history spammer, who relentlessly spammed the board with images from some historic movie. This led to him being dubbed the History-Spammer. Nanochan eventually died and a successor was born: L+JS. It was also written in Lua, also required no Javascript and was only available over Tor. And after a few months of operation a clone was born, that looked similar, yet had boards reserved for historical spam and it seemed like it had only one active user, the History-Spammer. There was a board, where old news articles from the 19th century were posted (only) for example. If I'd had to bet, that was dozens of GBs of just images with historical spam from that movie and other historical-themed stuff.
Too bad, I couldn't find the link to it right now.

Not really that special on retrospective, but quite interesting back when it happened.
It was the first time i went out of /k/ on 4chan to try /r9k/
I remember there was this black girl, think it was called Iris or something like that.
A lot of people on r9k had an obsession with her, and i remember that once, she created a thread where she explained that she was going to be having a meetup with an anon. Things went sideways real fast; she was saying that things were getting weird, she got paranoid and alleged that the anon was going to rape her, and what not. At the end, i think she just either abandoned the thread or escaped from the motel that she was at.
I recall that within the thread a big discussion unfolded, in which some anons said that Iris was just trying to get attention and other ones said that she was in real danger.
I haven't entered r9k in around a year now, so i don't know of her current whereabouts, but it would be nice if any of the lainons from here saw the same thread that i did. Let me know if you have any archive of the event.
It was my first day seeing a discussion on an image board unfold in real time, so yeah, for me, it was a novelty.

Back in 2018 there was this guy called Eunuch chan that would post on 8chan’s r9k. The gist of his story is that he was a 30 year old neet that didn’t like having a high sex drive, being lustful, and the power women had over him. Something about porn and fapping being sinful, and also that it was addictive and he had little control over it. So eventually he decided to become a eunuch and castrate himself. One night he injected some numbing agent, cut open his ballsack, pulled his testicles out and snipped them off. Then he tried to cauterize the area. At some point he passed out due to the pain and his parents found him passed out in a pool of blood with his diy surgery tools. After that he ended up in the hospital and posted some pictures of it, and of his stitched up nutsack.
He started off as some guy with a distinct posting style that would talk about AI (this was back before chat gpt so it was more theoretical rather than something you could spin up on your computer, mainly basic neural nets), along with religion, sin, how he wanted to convert from Judaism to Christianity, and other moral views and random bs. Then he castrated himself and posted the story. Pic related are the only screenshots I could find from some of the threads. I can’t seem to find the one with the photos of the aftermath (not sure I’d post that if I found it because it was pretty gross).
After that incident he gradually stopped posting about AI, religion, and the usual topics and got really into veganism. He’d post vegan propaganda and pictures of animals in slaughterhouses saying something about how people complain about not being accepted but are ok with animals being killed for food. He'd post the same threads on 4chan and 8chan every week or so. The veganism and some changes in his personality were probably caused by having low test from becoming a eunuch.
Anyways that was probably the most extreme person I’ve encountered online. I guess transgenderism is more common now and the surgeries are more drastic than that. The whole DIY surgery aspect is wild though. If you think of the most extreme people like Jihadis and the 9/11 hijackers, they’ll do some crazy things that no one else would do for some abstract religious goal. I can’t imagine any of them agreeing to cut open their sack with a science playkit scalpel, and then snip off each testicle to accomplish a mission or make their God happy. They’ll do crazy things and blow themselves up but I think that’s a line they wouldn’t cross (not that that's an option, or that becoming a eunuch is practical in any way.)

Probably the puppy torturer thread is in the top 5. A help request to find the evil sh*ts in the video was posted on 9ch. We went after them in old 8ch fashion. They were found and arrested and convicted soon after.
RIP pupperino.
Geolocating a rapey stalker posting photos of his target, a child murderer, and terrorists I don't think would make the top 5 weird threads though.
Perhaps the 8ch thread where it was discovered imageboards do fed MITM and change what is posted on the fly (proven by SHA sum comparisons) would be among the weirdest. 8ch didn't last for long after that.

This reminds me of a lainchan post (about learning to hack of all things) that linked to the web archive (very complete, like scanning the blog every single day) of a blog by a (tragically?) neurotic individual who felt disgusted by their encroaching male puberty. "I felt like I was the only one who understood that hormones were not part of the soul." Comes to be a trans female, AI enthusiast, vegan, and the author of a unique moral framework. Hijinks ensue, from sleep deprived silicon valley twinks in a boat to save on rent to a misunderstanding making people think she was going to shoot up a school. Ultimately either committed suicide, or faked her own death to donate the life insurance policy to AI safety causes. If I remember what the blog was called I'll post the archive, I think her chosen name started with a Z.

This is more weird in an amusing way than a creepy way but every few years I go back and re-read this 4chan /lit/ thread that devolved into an intense but entirely serious debate about hermeneutics and literary criticism centered on the subject of whether Holden Caulfield raped his sister Phoebe. Where did that one chan go which was by some one schizo dude who claimed to be a wizard and people would talk about sending loosh and the indigo pill or whatever color pill?
But the strangest imageboard experience for me has to have been Sipulikanava & Torilauta, which were darknet imageboards in Finland which on peak times would average like 500 posts an hour, mostly drug dealers posting advertisements of their wares and their IM contact for arranging face to face meetings, there were separate boards for all cities. In addition to buying drugs you had a dating board (for prostitution) and a work board for hiring people for your fraud schemes or as dealers to sell your drugs for you. I once hired a driver to drive me around while I dealt drugs there, I gave him a silver bar as a tip. Friend met his girlfriend for a while by hiring her as a maid to clean his apartment there. I indulged plenty in the prostitution too and got robbed many times. There'd be so many stories from that board. There was a widely publicized murder for hire attempt there...
It was quite something, nowadays there is still a textboard like that in use, originally for IM people used safe-mail some Israeli email service, then Wickr some American app but nowadays its all mostly gone to Telegram and Telegram groups.

An 8chan /fringe/ thread about Lainism was pretty weird.
Other esoteric mystery cults started derailing the thread (Lam's people, Great Determined Protector, et. al.), and an antisemetic racist homophobe CrapSlinger instigated a thread slide on such a slow board it was plainly obvious they didn't bump Lain's Lainism Thread.

They had galleries dedicated to those personalities and there was close to no activity other than anons just sending different pics of them. It also had a pretty eerie vibe to it, the main page was a pic of a girls nosebleed with clickable buttons going from A to Z, some of them leading you to galleries, few of them leading you to a single image that's taking up the whole screen, and the rest leading you to boards.

Common things in the Brotherhood of the Wheel, Masonic lodges, special services. This is called - to step onto the Bridge of Twins [Golden, Lion Gate]. As a rule, no really important information, only the oscillation of the mind, locked in a new cage of fictions. Reading 2~3 worthwhile books on Alchemy will give you all the necessary Knowledge. One time back on 4/v/, I was lurking in a thread, can't remember what it was about, but I think it was another thinly disguised off-topic thread, something about strange women IRL. It didn't get weird until one anon started posting some odd Wojak images. The best way I can describe them is like the old ones about NEETs and their parents, but instead of a guy and his mom, it was a girl (or princess, as the images kept referring to her) and her concerned-looking dad. Nothing graphic or out of place was happening in the pictures; always, some combination of the femjak smiling at the viewer from her room while her father stared on from an open doorway, uncomfortably, while some poster nearby counted "princess points."
What made these really strange was the other text inside the images; they all contained some esoteric messages. They were all oddly worded, and the message changed in each pic. I can't remember the specifics, but they ranged from things that sounded like they were about personal happiness to others that sounded like they were about taking advantage of people. These quickly derailed the thread, and the anon who posted them didn't respond to any posts asking about the images or where he got them until the thread was deleted by a janitor. I can remember one of the last posts before the thread 404'd, by this one anon warning everyone to leave the thread
>There is a demonic presence in this thread, and I encourage all anons to leave quickly. Demons are real and creatures of emotion, not form.
Might have been worded differently, but it was among those lines. I've never seen those images again or a thread like that one. I've tried to find it in the archives more than once, but never had success. Maybe that's for the best.

Whenever I see one of these annoying avatar posting image board users I have to imagine theres some amount of masochism inherent to it. It’s certainly some form of victim blaming but I can’t help but wonder why someone wouldn’t simply kill their online persona and start posting under a different identity. Even if someone has been doxxed a separate online identity could easily be created and separated from your meatspace identity. it was like the perfect expression of the human condition, an exquisite blend of rational and irrational
the unwillingly programmed monkey overlaid by the intelligent human who understands just how fuarrrked up he is underneath it all
more eye-opening than anything I've read since
it was fuarrrking hilarious too, but that's beside the point

The kpop posters on /mu/ always freaked me the fuarrrk out. I always thought they were bots cus seriously, who spends ALL their waking hours posting kpop celebrities? I'd test their botness by explaining my amazement, and ask them to reply to me with angry kpop women, and they would. I would get 5-6 replies, mostly just images of angry women, no words.
Dr. Eli Selig's fascination with maids counting to big numbers was quite amusing. Like, there were always a parts of you that were simultaneously convinced and unconvinced he was roleplaying his persona.
Terry A. Davis' story was fascinating. 'Down the rabbit hole' was my intro to him.
Pamperchu is probably the weirdest and grossest. I don't feel like typing out his habits... his YouTube account might still be up.
Hosting websites and servers and watching all the ssh authentication attempts with usernames "Zhang" "youxiang" "Xiao" etc around all ports ending with 22. That and all the bots going to /wp-admin /fast-cgi etc when I don't host wp or PHP tech

I'm a huge sucker for weird/outsider writing. Pic related is a great example. It's so bizarre that it almost seems real.
As far as finished/polished internet content goes, the whole Systemspace internet suicide cult slash nu-Gnostic belief system was probably the weirdest thing I personally encountered as it was happening. I still have my sketch and submission ID from back then but I kinda fell out of the loop after the site went down.

That user was called Smiley, I believe he was on 8chan's /fringe/ board but also had his own chan, I think it was called fringechan or something.
Smiley was a follower of a goddess named Eris. Eris being the greek goddess of chaos. I believe loosh is a new age term, although the basic concept exists across multiple belief systems. Loosh is magical fuel, kinda like mana is in video games. Smiley and some other anons (many of them chaotes) claimed that loosh could be harvested from other people's emotional energy and that trolling was an effective method of loosh farming. nonfat-soykaf drinkers would often reply with "thanks for the loosh mundane" after winding people up.
I remember seeing pics of who people claimed to be Smiley, a curly haired twink holding a sword in his comfy looking neet bedroom. Not sure what happened to Smiley, I hope he's doing well.

the thing that disturbed me the most are dark soykaf like 3 letter agency programs, the finders etc
when it comes to an anon weirding me out i once joined a tox room and this guy started laying out how he analyzed my speech and choice of words etc and started building on reasonable conclusions further and further until be was basically semi-doxing me, just based off of reasonable and smart thinking. it's that or the guy who posted on his profile that he likes the taste of grilled babies, but that was probably a poser, right?

There was a poster on the old cyberpunkreview forums who i think may have had schizophrenia and would post about him and his family trying to survive. I'm not sure what ended up happening to him. There was another one i've mostly forgotten but it was an anon posting hacked webcam feeds pre-2010. Other oddball ones were the IMDB forums for figures that weren't normal celebrities. The ones for mass shooters, serial killers, etc had people who'd known them in real life, psycho fans and such.

Laser lainon who also posted on other imageboards was obsessed with blinding people including completely innocent ones with high powered lasers and constantly talked about it in every thread they appeared in. Might be in prison by now if serious.

Lmao, same. You have to be literally clinically insane to spend the WHOLE fuarrrkING DAY posting kpop trash nonstop. They slide all other organic threads too. fuarrrking kshitters should get their own board or be outright derezzed.
John Doe · 2025-12-25 20:31

He would post youtube videos of him burning and blinding animals with lasers, then ramped up to posting videos of him beaming high powered lasers into cars in an attempt to blind drivers. The last thing I remember him posting here about was how he allegedly partially blinded some guy while doing this and he said if the guy tries to press charges he'd kill him. He also sometimes claimed to have bombs made and that he planned on rigging his house with them and lasers.
he'd joke that he had memetic armor that shielded him from the police and any real consequence. he also claimed to do some more antisocial soykaf but I don't remember details.
I think he mostly showed up here when he got derezzed from 4chan. Most posters here did not seem to like him and I remember a couple of his threads getting deleted, so I think mods may have derezzed him from here a few times too.
Some lains archived some of his lainchan threads so maybe someone will post them here. In his indictment there are also some quotes of his 4chan posts and you can search 4chan's 3rd party archives to find the threads they're from.

He is indeed in prison, but not for the laser stuff. He (allegedly) shot and killed two people and left the gun at the scene. It was the same gun he showed off in some youtube videos and it had "absolution" carved into it, and that's how they connected it to him. He also got some hate crime charge for threats he made to a sherrif.
that was all in 2023 I think, but I don't know if he's been convicted of anything yet. Alaska courts move slow, I guess. His name was Joshua Wahl and if you search "Joshua Wahl Laseranon" you'll get results about all of it.

not a chan thread, but sort of chan-adjacent, one time i was lurking in an irc channel frequented by various prominent internet trolls and someone shared a link to a stickam stream where one of the regulars in the channel was on webcam grinding up methadone tablets and shooting them up one after another while the other regulars watched. as he kept shooting more and more pills it got more tense in the chat, some of the users started begging him to stop but others just kept egging him on and telling him to shoot another pill. eventually he passed out on his bed with the cam on and then his stream hit the 2 hour limit and automatically shut off. he was never seen or heard from again.

They don't exist anymore but there was a group that, from around 2009 to 2011, would randomly send links under certain videos or posts on sites. It was "propaganda" material which further investigating led me to the group's main site and a hidden forum where they posted about how to get children to join their alien nazi magic cult and how to spam sites and avoid bans. Tons of guides on things for it. It was called YJOS

For me, it has to be that one 4/diy/ thread where the guy was asking for a bunch of imitation crab meat for a project he wouldn't explain. There was also another weird ass thread on /b/ in 2012, where a guy had this moldy ass food that had been sitting there forever, and he started adding random objects to it, and anons kept telling him things to add to it. Then, eventually he stuck his dick in it. Does anyone remember that?
