I'm going to therapy now, what should I expect? What was your experience like? Will they shove pills down my throat and put me in a straight jacket?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

Awkwardness. Discomfort. Manipulation by people that just want you to be a wageslave and serve the system, with no legitimate regard to your individual well-being. You'll feel lighter but only because they're taking from your wallet.

It depends on your condition and if you get an average experience or luck out and find a rare critical thinking psychologist. >>83466 Well there is humanistic psychology and positive psychology etc where their goals are higher than wageslave

>>83465 >I'm going to therapy now, That's great if you need therapy and you find a good therapist. >what should I expect? It depends on the quality of the therapist. They have about the same incidence of incompetence and excellence as any other profession. >What was your experience like? When the therapist was good, it was extremely helpful. When the therapist was bad, it was terrible. When the therapist was mediocre, it was just a waste of time. >Will they shove pills down my throat and put me in a straight jacket? Not unless you are one of three things: 1. A danger to yourself. 2. A danger to others. 3. Gravely disabled (unable to care for yourself). The final decision on this is up to a judge, not a therapist, psychiatrist, or policeman. The good news is that judges usually have a lot better sense than healthcare professionals or law enforcement. Otherwise you can refuse any medication or confinement the same as anyone else. I hope you hit the jackpot and find a good therapist and/or psychiatrist who can actually help you.

The real answer is that it just depends. The therapist and their methodology matter a lot. There are good and bad therapists, and even within that spectrum there are variations in who is a good for fit for a particular therapist or type of therapy. Some forms of therapy have more robust evidence supporting their efficacy than others. It also depends on your particular diagnoses (some respond to therapy more than others), the quality of healthcare in your country, etc. Anecdote: Personally, I've had both good and bad experiences with therapy. When I first sought help when I was in university, the therapists that my university employed were not very good and they turned me off of the idea of therapy for a very long time. When I entered the workforce and moved to a new city, I did my research and found a therapist in my area who is a good fit for me as a person. I feel like I have made a lot of progress over the past couple of years both in practical matters and in more personal and existential ones.

expect glitterboyry there are a number of types of therapist but they're pretty much all glitterboys. some might not try to shove pills down your throat they'll just try and turn you gay or break your spirit through other ways don't waste your time on them the odds it will ruin your life are higher than the odds it will make it better

>>83471 They are required to inform you I think. Though they might do something unofficially then wont. >>83465 couple of tips: 1. if your mental distress is due to external circumstance then the therapist will not have anything to say to help you with solving the problem. if your problem is due to objections with the state of society then they will always try to deflect you from this line of thinking and try to get you to internalize your feelings and see them as purely a symptom of state of mind instead of having some sort of objective legitimacy 2. if your emotional state is more than moderately negative, and you reveal to them the full state of your feelings, you are always running a risk of them involuntarily institutionalizing you

>>83465 >Will they shove pills down my throat and put me in a straight jacket? This is all coming from my therapy experience in France, but I've heard it's pretty much the same every where else, here, psychology is a bullshit degree for drug addicts that want to party through college, I don't know how it is elsewhere, but I've always been told to never date a therapist, because they are always insane. The learning material for psychology is full of holes, labels change all the time, lots of documented mental illnesses aren't even real, because people make bank discovering new mental illness and discovering bullshit placebo meds, or straight up dangerous drugs sold as medication. I've spent a disgusting amount of money looking for a good therapist,I went through army therapists, therapists that went on TV, therapists that published books and therapist that work in psych wards, now I'm sure you can find a good therapist, but it's like finding a needle in a haystack because the learning material is obsolete, and the people that attend those classes rarely if ever questions the status quo, as of now a therapist is a 21st century snake oil salesman. Now this is based on my experience with therapy in France so, this might not be accurate elsewhere, there's a number of things that can happen. >Therapist doesn't listen to you and gives you bullshit "hang in there" tier advice >Therapist gives you meds that kills your libido, makes you act retarded and turns you into a social outcast >Therapist gives you benzos, benzos increases chance of brain and heart disease, benzos are highly addictive, if you quit benzos cold turkey you might die. If a therapist tries to give you benzos just walk out, that therapist is an evil piece of soykaf, literally worse than a crack dealer because at least they don't wear a lab coat and pretend crack is anxiety medication. >Therapist sends you to the psych ward (this is more likely to happen if you are underage) >Become psych ward guinea pig, yummy experimental pills, you might get raped or die from overdose, maybe you'll get drugged so much you'll become retarded, you're not getting out of here without PTSD I grew up with abusive parents, like really abusive, I cut them off now. Anyway when I was a kid I went through multiple therapists, they all knew, they saw the bruises yet they just told me to stay positive and keep making art and jokes and soykaf because they were getting paid by my parents, every time I mentioned the abuse I just got told to "take a deep breath and let it happen, it'll stop eventually". After I got beaten bloody and thrown in a dumpster by my drunk father, I called my therapist I wanted to leave with her but I was too scared of what my parents might do to me. Then she snapped, called social services and police, my parents bribed them easily and sent me to a new therapist, of course I investigated, went to the good therapist's office, been told she just moved out in a hurry, probably got threatened. That was the one good therapist I've had, but even she didn't have the tools to help me. Just go to the gym bro, it works better than this guru nonsense.

>>83546 2/2 Forgot to mention this but some therapists will turn you into a straight up bad person. Like the kind of chick that blames men for every inconvenience. Some therapists keep their client by helping them deflect blame for their soykafty behavior. >It's society's fault >It's men's fault >It's because of your trauma you can't do anything about it I've heard this behavior is more common amongst male therapist, also if you have a gf and she goes to a male therapist you might want to look into it, they are notorious for banging female patients. There's also plenty of pedo therapists, I wouldn't advise anyone to trust a male therapist, most of them are creeps.
Makia · 2024-08-17 12:57
>>83465 >>83466 fpbp. Don't trust therapists. They don't do anything you can't on your own but they'll convince you to be a slave on top of it. Usually they just repeat back to you what you're trying to express. "I can't stand broccoli. My father was abusive and would forcively shove broccoli down my throat every night when I was a kid. So whenever I see broccoli I get nervous." "... I see, so you're saying your fear of broccoli comes from your abusive father because he would force you to eat your veggies? Let's try some exposure therapy so you can return to your minimum wage job in the produce department of Walmart." No soykaf, shirlock.

Because I don't respect therapy, because I'm a scientist. Because I invent, transform, create, and destroy for a living, and when I don't like something about the world, I change it. And I don't think going to a rented office in a strip mall to listen to some agent of averageness explain which words mean which feelings has ever helped anyone do anything. I think it's helped a lot of people get comfortable and stop panicking, which is a state of mind we value in the animals we eat, but not something I want for myself. I'm not a cow. I'm a pickle. When I feel like it. So...you asked.
Drano · 2024-08-17 17:34
>>83548 This. Therapy has limited applications and most therapists are overpaid guidance counselors. Psychiatric medication can also be incredibly dangerous and is overprescribed.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2024-08-17 18:50
My advice to you, as someone who's been in therapy for many years, don't be afraid to replace your therapist. If you feel like they're not working for you, find a new one. It's a waste of time and money for you to visit a therapist you don't like or doesn't help you. By the same logic, if you don't feel like your therapist is helping you don't completely write off therapy just yet. A lot of people say therapy works for everyone, a lot of people say therapy works for no one. Neither of these are true, while therapy isn't for everyone the risk of being out of therapy is greater than the risk of being in therapy. Give it a while before you write it off. Most importantly enjoy and relax.

There are different kinds of psychotherapists because there is different schools of psychotherapy. Even in same schools certain therapists may focus on different therapies. Like you will get pretty different views from a pretty common CBT specialized psychotherapist vs a DBT based psychotherapist vs a Lacanian psycho analyst vs a Humanistic psychotherapist. >>83548 They do that so you know they heard you. It's meant to comfort you that you at least are heard. Suicide hotlines do the same thing except minus the advice. Also they do it to confirm you think what they think you do since they sometimes have patients without a logical thought pattern. Oh and in that scenario you made they would use CBT rather than exposure therapy. Exposure therapy is just for phobias rather than people with PTSD flashbacks. >>83546 Sorry to hear you went through that. That doesnt sound too typical though. Normally if there is clear signs of abuse they would report it, at least after some delay in case nothing happens to the parents because too soon and it becomes clear who reported them and that their kid told someone which could mean a bad end. Yours waited too long for whatever reason.

Drug therapy has helped me immensely. Fluoxetine pretty much gave me a livable life. But I was pretty skeptical about talk therapy. Then I saw some research photos of brain scans showing blood flow to various parts of the brain. Turns out that both drug therapy and talk therapy can cause significant changes in the physical brain. While it's true that most psychologist as useless fuarrrkheads trying to get you to believe in some ideal fantasy world that only exists in psychology textbooks and self-help books, there are still a few you can connect with on a purely human level. Those are the ones that can help you. And anyone who thinks drug therapy can't help don't know wtf they're talking about. Yeah, I know about the horror stories and the psychiatrists just using them like animal tranquilizers or experimental research. But if you manage to find the drug that works for you, it can be a life-saver. t. recovered major depressive

>>83586 You are absolutely right it really isn't working for me. I took a year long break and I'm only returning back to therapy now.
