I'm 18 years old, currently living on Buenos Aires
I love to do music in my free time as well as, mostly, lurk in here.
My favorite song is Klink, by Death Grips and i'm basically looking for creative people that want to share ideas with other persons (mainly music wise but anything counts, really)
I'd rather see if anyone gets interested in me before actually putting a way to contact me privately, so please, respond to this comment with some of your own traits and then i'll send my contact info.
>QOTT: What introduced you to lainchan? Why do you visit the site?
I was introduced to lainchan by basically lurking around in 4chan. People used to mention this site from time to time.
As 4chan got progressively more and more repetitive for me, i decided to give this website a try and i really liked it.
I use it because i think it's a very good blend between a good, somewhat active community, and also, a relaxed one that doesn't overwhelms one self with the same 3 topics being thrown around again and again.

>About me
Tech worker + doing my master's in computer science part-time. I've got autism and ADHD. Agender+asexual. Kind of boring but do my best to respond to people when I am online.
>Favorite things
I enjoy reading misc. non-fiction, including religious studies. Current favorite film is Fantastic Planet. I don't have a favorite song but favorite artists include Beach House, Ichiko Aoba, and Shizuka. Games - I have been messing around with GregTech: New Horizons. I also spent some time learning the card game KeyForge and would like to play more (but I am not very good).
Primary hobby is tea. I am especially interested in a type of Chinese tea called puer, but also drink other kinds of tea. I also like collecting teaware, although my collection isn't very extensive. I enjoy it as a hobby because it doesn't really take a lot of time out of my day. I keep a tea set at work and home and drink tea throughout the day as my primary caffeine source. I still have a lot to learn, I am by no means a tea expert.
I don't have a lot of time for hobbies right now, so I focus on improving aspects of my life that are already there. For example I have started a small record collection primarily consisting of some of my favorite albums. Not super into it but it's something. I've also got a librebooted ThinkPad X220 that I'd like to think up some projects for, but nothing concrete there yet.
>What you're looking for
Chill people to text chat with on Discord. I am not interested in voice or video chat. I am however up for maybe watching something together or playing a game together if we get along well and I have the time.
>What you aren't looking for
Horny, politics, voice/video

I know that judging someone's inherent worth as a human on the basis of their technical competence is silly and out-of-touch. It doesn't make you interesting or superior, isn't a demonstration of your own skills, and isn't a replacement for a personality. It just makes you an obscure asshole.

The fundamental problem with this approach is that there are no girls on the internet. A secondary problem with this approach is that lainchain is one of the few places left on the internet where people are aware of the concept of doxing. A tertiary problem with this approach is that putting two sick people in the same room does not tend to make either of them less sick.

This whole thread is an utter joke and everyone knows it. People are posting soykaf as if it's a dating app and no one really ends up having "meaningful" frenships. I have tried that and hung up with people online, and texting especially daily and not being able to be vulnerable and reciprocate emotions is THE thing barely anyone can do.

I mean the odds of actually not only getting along but also being highly compatible as close friends or lovers is very low if you haven't made personal contact to know each other first which acts as a filter. Not saying you have no chance just you in most cases either wont get along or will just be very shallow in relationship, not that deeper connections arent also possible just at that point you're better off just going to any physical location and talking to people since at least you can observe their behavior beforehand.

>Favorite Book
Underground: Tales of Hacking, Madness and Obsession on the Electronic Frontier by Suelette Dreyfus and Julian Assange
I think this might have been a lainchan rec?
Also I read a lot of royalroad and archiveofourown.
>Favorite Movie
I don't watch a lot of movies, so this would take a lot of thought to try to answer
>Favorite Song
If I try to name a song that I really like it'll just be some pop song you already know ...if I allow catchy songs to count
So here are some songs that are not catchy that I really like, ordered by uncatchiness descending
Massive Attack - Psyche
House of Dust - King 810
Gezebelle Gaburgably - Pagan
I feel like I'm forgetting something but that's how it is with this type of question. Maybe some Infected Mushroom song? They're actually pretty catchy. Death grips probably deserves a spot somewhere now that I think about it.
>Favorite Game
I haven't dared use games in a while, but I have really enjoyed tower defense and the watermelon merging game. I hate that point where you understand the entirety of a video game to the point it lacks fascination but you can still immerse yourself in the gameplay loop.
>Favorite Hobby
I guess I read a bunch of books which is like half a hobby. I want to figure out music and just experiment. I write a bunch, like fiction except I like writing outlines of ideas more than I like actually writing. Trying to motivate myself to start working hard so I can put my ambitious stockpile of benevolently manic plans into action.
>what you're looking for
Serendipity- so anything.
I have recently been trying to find men I respect. (To clarify ambiguously, I am not a heterosexual female)
>what you aren't looking for
I guess I don't want to discuss politics or sexuality. At the same time I feel obligated to say that this is a very convenient for me because I imagine mine are offensive to other people and sometimes myself.

I don't feel like going to the effort of private comms until I have a guaranteed person to talk to that I anticipate talking to long term. If we risk spamming up the board/thread we could try moving to an unpopulated IRC or splinter chan.

Ever read Rival Caesars by "Desmond Dilg"? Same author as Might makes Right (probably, with pseudonyms and all) but it's a fictional history account of 2 egoist co-conspirators during the American revolution who swear an oath of mutual aid. I started reading it but haven't gotten very far. I was hoping for an interesting take on brotherhood. (maybe it is in there)

What? No. Passions are just like catalysts, they won't determine a good or bad frenship. Intimacy and values matter much more since passions are usually already fleeting in a few years and everyone also has a wide range of interests.

No I just heard of it now (and I'm not >>87327). It looked a bit interesting buuuut, meh. Maybe it's just me judging the movie by how it looks (though I liked the "live action" idea and I've just seen some clips. I liked War and Peace and how Pierre (picrel) relates to me in a way, but it is kinda more idealistic than Shiki-Jitsu which is more "real". I still liked Asuka because she's so relatable to me and my struggles, you MIGHT say
>>I can save h-ACK!!!
...BUT it's more about her saying the stuff I exactly say to myself, e.g. "Nobody cares about me. Nobody stays with me! So, I don't want to depend on anybody. But I hate it at the same time; it's a pain! I don't wanna be alone! I don't wanna be alone! I DON'T WANNA BE ALONE!!!"
>How would you make a thread like this better? You have an amorphous collective of anon tourists and regulars who are all lonely. How do you maximize the chance that any pair of them who would otherwise make good friends find one another?
I'm that same lain! I guess that most of them just like seeking cookie-cutter interactions on IRCs and Discord servers, or spend the whole day on shallow conversations which I REALLY REALLY hate. Ugh, I honestly believe that it's only "good" when two people agree that they'd spend an hour a day specifically for hanging out, or more ideally just rely on emails on a weekly basis or something.

Why is that a bad thing? It's refreshing how real and subdued it feels, at least emotionally. Captures the nuance of what it's actually like to learn to be close to somebody, warts and all. Besides, it's a nice contrast with the bonkers visuals.
>>I honestly believe that it's only "good" when two people agree that they'd spend an hour a day
How do you get to that point to begin with? It's not easy, hah.
>>Nobody stays with me! So, I don't want to depend on anybody. I don't wanna be alone!
If you want to be close to someone you have to share a part of yourself, and that necessitates being vulnerable. That was Asuka's character flaw, imo.
Sounds stupid, but for a long time I kept my hobbies a secret, because they were such a big part of me that it was too "sacred" to give it away to anyone else. That sucked, though; it was really lonely. Even if being vulnerable is scary and dangerous, it means that on very rare occasion, you meet someone who cares about you for who you actually are. Goes both ways, you both have to be vulnerable, and you both have to care.
I'm not sure if sharing movies I like on an imageboard is much better, but hey progress is progress

>>87332
>Why is that a bad thing?
Shiki-Jitsu tells you how things are, War and Peace tells you how things "could" be.
>How do you get to that point to begin with? It's not easy, hah.
Alright, no hour a day. That was just from my experience when I spoke to an old friend at midnight or early morning. But we did vent to each other and listened. I have spoken about "an email in a week" which I favor, but you probably didn't read it. That's completely different from compulsively texting all-day.
>If you want to be close to someone you have to share a part of yourself, and that necessitates being vulnerable. That was Asuka's character flaw, imo.
I can do that with almost anyone and I'm open for it, because I believe that we all share pretty much the same flaws. I'm also weirdly more empathetic (or at least that's how I believe I am), I remember randomly sending to people I've good times with some GIFs of anime girls hugging, or reacting with a heart on text messages whenever someone accomplished something little or got anything.
>Sounds stupid, but for a long time I kept my hobbies a secret, because they were such a big part of me that it was too "sacred" to give it away to anyone else.
(see gif)
That's a thing we all learn eventually. None of us is really "special". Everyone has his own sets of hobbies, larpers as well have their own and pretend to be "productive", but it's really all the same.

I'd say both are interesting things to examine, but media like Ritual is a lot rarer than the more melodramatic Tolstoy or Dostoyevski-esque stuff, which had big influence on directors like Scorsese (he mentioned it in an interview iirc).

heh told ya so, ya grump
>>I have spoken about "an email in a week" which I favor, but you probably didn't read it. That's completely different from compulsively texting all-day.
I did read it, but you misunderstood my point. To get to the stage of non-smalltalk, you first have to actually meet the person, get to know them, see if you fit together, etc (otherwise you're probably just speaking "at" them, not "to" them). Which was the original question I was posing: "How do you maximize the chance that any pair of them who would otherwise make good friends find one another?".
Besides, sometimes I'm exhausted and shallow chatter is comforting. Though as you said there are people who avoid any deep conversation (which I can't fathom), but hey to each their own.

Damn, surprising. It was always devoid of activity, beyond a few regulars fuarrrking around with the bot. Appleman was nice, from what I can tell the guy's been effectively maintaining this site solo. I hope he's doing well
>obviously lmao, you don't just hop in and vent all your stuff instantly
Hop in what? You have to start somewhere, that's my point. The post I was replying to complained about the "dating app"-ness of the thread, so maybe there's a better way to structure things, or better questions to ask, right?
>Tough luck, no one responded
Yeah I'd be surprised if it's worked for anyone. Trying this on a niche imageboard is a long shot to begin with, soykaf like ASL just makes it shallower. Maybe if more people participated in /inter/lit/music/vis/ instead of throwing their preferences into the void and fuarrrking off lol

>I've been wanting to make something similar to YNO but in 3D
Before even thinking about making the game you need to imagine how it'd look like. I assume it should be something very unique and personal that comes after a few years of work in stuff. Dan Salvato, the maker of DDLC, was a professional Super Smash Bros gamer and known for his modding in Project M there, and had a love-hate relationship with anime, so he came up with that horror game. Studio Massa was into animation almost a decade ago and got into South African and Dutch history. I don't know if these things are survivorship bias, but they made things that are just deeply personal.
>heck yeah
waaa I wish I knew what happens next when the girl was about to visit her mother xd
>Damn, surprising.
Appleman was barely there, and mostly there are some few people chatting 24/7; trust me the IRC has become completely different from Lainchan itself. A whole different world...
>Hop in what?
Yeah, it's not hard at all. You just comment on something or ask someone why he's doing this or that, and then you start a convo. I guess everyone should read How to Make Friends and Influence People as it helped me not to run out of what to say (unless the other person was so shallow or dull that he won't say anything), at least for me.
>Yeah I'd be surprised if it's worked for anyone.
(did hurt a little bit seeing the inbox empty, but anyway)
I believe most people are afraid of being judged or appear weak, that's why we got tons of LARPers everywhere, for example, or ones who are too afraid to give their contact info. Also, I believe people here just put in generic or acceptable/ambiguous hobbies (e.g. "reading", "gaming") rather than just saying what they really love to do (I forgot to add on my original post, I love Caramelldansen and pre-2015 internet nostalgia), it's like there is some other kind of social conditioning happening here that makes people think not to appear """cringe""", ASL does feel pointless and it's just to be ignored anyway.
>Maybe if more people participated in /inter/lit/music/vis/ instead of throwing their preferences into the void and fuarrrking off lol
Nah, even if this is an actual forum with name users it won't work that way.
I mean, I've set some "boundaries" for "what I'm not looking for" (I should've included LARPers as well) and whoops I might have made people afraid I'll reject them or whatever, ugh....

Making maps and modding source engine was fun for a while but the unfathomable level of jank was starting to haunt my dreams. Seeking · 2025-02-25 16:33
Hello lainchan, I'm 28 years old. Trans Woman. I live in the San Francisco bay area.
After my blood was drawn for a test last month, I began to feel very spacey and dissociated. Ordinarily, I just faint, but this time it felt a lot different. Better. And, I noticed I was acting different - as if I was drunk, I slurred my words as I spoke, and I seemed to care less. Not in a way that, there was something weighing on me, but rather more lighthearted. It was exciting.
I noticed something else, too. There were thoughts I couldn't get out of my head.. as if something inside of me had been awakened.
>about myself
I like to read and write. Gothic literature, primarily. Mary Shelley is my favorite author. My favorite book of hers is her complete collected works, something I would desperately like a hard-bound copy of. I would keep it beside my hardbound of Poe. My favorite movies are horrors, especially vampire films, but I cannot pick one just one as my favorite. Unsurprisingly, the same goes for music - I like death rock, murder folk, industrial, witch house, psychedelic trance, electronic body music, and such.
I'm not interested in playing games.
I'm looking for a vampire. Nothing else appeals to me. I would like to go on a proper date with somebody experienced, refined, yet with a perhaps supernatural health about them. Somebody with pale skin, long teeth, and a taste, if things go well... for human blood. I would like to learn about a new, subtle world of ancient mystery, and masquerade. The world of a vampire.
I'm interested in men and women, but only if you're a vampire. If you're a man, I might be a little less trusting initially, but you still have my interest.
>not looking for
Dates with non-vampires. While I am open to friendship with anybody, especially if you too have an appreciation for the dark, arcane and mysterious, literature, or alchemy. I know about the goth events happening around here, although I am currently injured and cannot attend shows for the time being, but hope to be able to in a month approximately.
>Contact info
I am a tall, blonde-haired goth with blue eyes and I frequently wear a maroon hooded jacket with faux fur lining the hood. Sometimes I dress in another fashion that leans more grunge, but I always try to incorporate eclecticism and paranormal interests into the way I dress. I would prefer to communicate in person only, but am also receptive to a phone call or letter - if you are a vampire, finding me should not be difficult. You probably know who I am already - I am merely extending my invitation.

i am currently coming out of a depressive slump. it lasted nearly a year and i lost nearly all of my hobbies and interests. :( for the past few days, ive been exploring various hobbies that i might be interested in.. some examples are programming (C), jewelry making, journaling (although this is mostly for my mental health), gaming, reading, watching movies, drawing.
despite my depression, i still try to be a kind and fun person! i love hearing about other peoples interests and hobbies, so if you have something to infodump about... im your girl!!

i promise i'm not as much of a pseud or pretentious as some of my interests might suggest. i lost contact with someone very dear to me recently, and don't really have anyone who i can talk to about the things i care about. i'm a bit awkward and stiff, info-dumping is the primary way i loosen up to people in conversation. i'd prefer someone who has similar taste in art and of a similar age, but i'd be happy to engage with anyone who wants to talk. i also apologize if i take a long time to respond to messages or randomly stop texting; i don't enjoy messaging at all, at least initially.

Hi.
Personally i almost never say i'm italian when i'm around other websites, i don't know why but it feels really weird. It's like i have to put up a commedia or something everytime i chat to another italian online. I have a theory about why this happens but maybe there are many more than you think, just most of us are silently lurking and putting up a mask to conform to try and avoid the label italian as much as possible, besides the diochan and 4chan /filo/ users
Switch · 2025-04-03 04:11

You're either disingenuous or ignorant. Italy as a nation, while weak and barely existing as a cohesive entity, was and still somewhat is important. After the war we were still producing great art, we still had innovators, we still mattered on an international scale.
>>89182
Yeah, me too. A lot of it probably simply has to do with not being able to properly speak english (as you can read). But as I was implying, it wasn't always like this, and it's worsening by the day. I believe it has to do with our constant neurosis and learned, internalized shame mixed with growing tech illiteracy
Jane Doe · 2025-04-03 05:27
>>89183
That kind of popular italian label is something only italian americans from NYC want for popularity.
Funny how you interpreted it as I'm cool label, i actually meant a label of shame but it's something that probably only other italians like me can understand on the fly without explanation.
>>89185
>Yeah, me too. A lot of it probably simply has to do with not being able to properly speak english (as you can read). But as I was implying, it wasn't always like this, and it's worsening by the day. I'm part of the younger gen so i don't know how different it was before. Besides the tech illiteracy which is something that can be found everywhere anyways, i think it's definetely more about shame, but have you thought about why we feel shame about being part of this country? I thought about this hard. It's easy to say "well it's because everyone is an illiterate normal person besides me" but it doesn't convince me, there's definitely more about it. It's something that is never talked about, and coincidentally up above they have have a crazy need to affirm a national italian identity whatever party is in charge. like a proper neurosis. It's like they're scared of a terrible truth coming up and everything breaking up in pieces, like in the reinassance, where our creative spirit was at it's best with a general distrust of everything State related that fueled a development of the individual. Maybe an ancient historical sense makes us distrustful and sarcastic at the stupid attempts at importing the nationalism of other countries by politicians (one of the reason no one votes), where our true national spirit was more of a reciprocal respect and brothership, even in times of war, between the peoples of the small republics and principalities of the penisula with all their different cultures and customs where a single ancient history united us, and was never about uniting and conformity which is what maybe is ruining us on a spiritual and creative level.
polite sage for off-topic, sorry for the big wall of text but i feel like there's never really a time or a place where i can talk about this besides my head.
Pris · 2025-04-03 05:37

It is talked about, or was at least. It's been the main problem since the start. Fascist ideology at its peak was an attempt at starting over from fresh, realising that it was the only way to create something where the was nothing at all. Then it inevitably got corrupted, became what it became, and was never tried again, probably never will because I'm almost certain it was just an idealistic dream.
don't know who or where we are now, but it can't be good. What you said, even if too simplistic (I get why, not accusing you), is all true though. What a sad state of affairs.
Now I'll stop talking about esoteric italian problems and get back on topic, sorry OP.

Imagine jewish neurosis mixed with centuries of being conquered and neutered, again mixed with the Church, again mixed with thousands of local deities still present in peoples souls, again mixed with incredible ethnic (and linguistic) diversity, again mixed with being united under a nation that never existed and never will, with a final touch of becoming America's lap dog. It's retarded to be quite frank

I don’t think I really have hobbies. Tried making music, dropped it. Now I found a very big and well visible wall of an abandoned stadium nearby. It’s full of graffiti so I want to paint it white and write “SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL IS GOING TO HAPPEN” on it, cause I liked the message of that video game. Already bought the paint. I guess I’m weird and do weird stuff like that, not sure it counts as a hobby. I like people, think they matter, think world is a fuarrrk and would like it to be a better place for everyone involved.

>QOTT: What introduced you to lainchan? Why do you visit the site?
I got here in 2016 from a Polish image board that no longer exists. There was a discussion about the declining quality of image boards and internet in general. This place was listed as one of the few good ones still left. I used to visit to learn something from all the smart people here, nowadays I go here rarely, mostly when I’m feeling lonely.

You're making light of a rather serious thing. What this troll is doing isnt merely foreigner+badthing, he's directly playing up the porn brained indian caricature, which is a real and common stereotype of indians. In his pretty small personal biography he sticks in the fact that hes going to send you porn because he 'likes beautiful women'. Does anyone else in this thread mention this kind of thing ? Liking beautiful women is common enough but drawing attention to it and his porn habit in this way makes no sense whatsoever except as a troll.
Seriously. No one introduces themself saying 'hi I like movies and some video games and also pornography'. Its so ridiculous that people here would even take it at face value.
I don't like complaining overmuch about this type of thing but by not calling him out for his bs we let that stereotype grow.

This discourse really bothers me. On one hand, I don't see why gender is particularly relevant to /friendgen/; people should be defined by their interests/personalities and not physical traits. Also yes, it's the internet, you should be taking everything with a grain of salt regardless.
That being said the fact that people only start losing their soykaf when someone posts an "F" and not an "M" makes it pretty clear what the desirable norm is in the eyes of some of the posters here. If you think women are that rare in our circle then you should be trying to make it a more welcoming place; not ostracize them by posting low tier bad faith garbage.

Nope. It is well known fact that females are soulless and admitting them into any community is begging for it to be ruined. Since they are incapable of appreciating anything they will just start their usual chad accumulation routine and wreck your community. physical traits define who you are, they define your personality and your interests and your capabilities. Actual women are quite rare in our space. Not entirely nonexistent, but quite rare, so very often when someone says they're a girl (btw) its a stupid attention grab by someone who's just a glitterboy. Not always, but quite often. If you're actually a girl please just try to pretend to be one of the guys, its less annoying.

Of course not, and this is the problem: the fact women are willing to constantly break anonymity anywhere online, just to try punctuating that they're women and gather attention, is one of the many reasons imageboards even exist in the first place, and also why we're all here, this thread is no different.
You all always bring normal persondom anywhere you step in, you all got nothing of good to offer, nothing other than wanting to gather attention from some internet strangers to boost your ego, while showing no care for anything and destroying discussions online with how irrational you are (and no one can even remotely disagree since that would "coward" or "toxic", we shall lower ourselves more and more to accommodate the ladies, it's never enough).
Listen up, go back to your Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, or any other normal person social media site that you came from, where you can expose yourself 24/7 and gain all the proper caddle attention you all want, while some multi-corporation profits out of your ignorant mob behavior, sure these people will welcome your completely pointless presence and hysteria way more than some niche imageboard about computing and esotericism.

as another lain helpfully put it you are projecting an archetype. this "fact" is not only evidently wrong from this thread, its also deeply untrue when you consider that one of the originators of anonymous culture, girlvinyl, was a woman. as for the imageboard format it was ported to english in 2003 by moot who has spoken extensively about how people like you are the cancer that ruined everything. just check on 4chan itself:
https://4chan.org/4channews.php?all#oldnews
>Sorry, but no. 4chan is open to everyone, and I WANT people outside of ADTRW to use it. The quote "a comprehensive english based resource for the collection and distribution of yaoi and dickgirlz" (previous title), is simply one of comical value, a kind of inside joke. Why did I choose this seemingly horrid sentence as a quote? I had no clue it would offend anybody... sorry guys, but sarcasm is prevalent on the internet as well as real life!
later on he states:
>In January 2011, I fuarrrked up. Frustrated with /r9k/ and /new/, I removed them from the site. It took this exchange (continued here) months later with the founder of Encyclopedia Dramatica for me to realize how wrong I was. Shortly after, I re-added them and apologized to the community.
Since you are obviously new, for your information that founder was girlvinyl.
So, not only are you deeply confused about the history of imageboards, but your community would not even exist if a woman didn't tell moot to bring back your home boards in the first place.
Bob Arctor · 2025-05-23 02:04

He is not projecting an archetype, that's not what the word projection means.
> moot who has spoken extensively about how people like you are the cancer that ruined everything
It's a good thing then that none of moot's words are considered seriously by anyone who's familiar with him because he has consistently been more controlling than an average BB forum moderator. Writing a bad port of 2chan, administrating it like an idiot directly causing communities to be fragmented even more than they originally were, then handing over the website to hiro who's even more incompetent relieves him of ever being considered an authority on what imageboards should be like.
> home boards
And ironically you continue the trend of assigning archetypes by assuming that having a particular opinion means that you must originate from a particular board. /r9k/ and /new/ and their offspring have always been the worst subsets of imageboard culture and part of the reason people use altchans is to avoid /r9k/-culture. moot being a wannabe dictator who booted boards off on a whim doesn't make girlvinyl an angel for convincing him to bring those boards back.

of course not, none of these people are angels and none of us are either, that's the point that we don't have to be on anonymous imageboards. moot being 16 when he started 4chan should illustrate moreso than anything these people didn't intend to be seen as leaders that wound up being much larger and having more cultural impact than they were expecting, which people often miss the point of by being opportunistic orbiters or getting weirdly idealistic. 4chan was never intended as a free speech zone and in spite of being a resilient gay porn directory it was also never intended to be for men to freely express themselves of women's judgment. that being stated like you said mootchan while unsustainable was evidently preferable to the whole RapeApe / hiroyuki situation.
> /r9k/ and /new/ and their offspring have always been the worst subsets of imageboard culture and part of the reason people use altchans is to avoid /r9k/-culture.
I'm not actually sure what we're disagreeing on at this point as those are my feelings too. you give the impression of needing to contradict everything I say and then tell me back what I was saying I think you would understand my perspective better if you paused for a moment to listen.

>you talk about moot and hiroyuki as if there was ever someone whos evidently good at running an imageboard
There have been a handful of imageboards with mostly flawless administration, but in the spirit of being a gatekeeping kike, I'm not going to name them.
>except kalyx of course, and naturally also appleman.
And I don't think appleman is a good owner despite using his site regularly. The blackbox filters that he installed make the experience worse for almost all genuine users regardless of if the filters do prevent spam. I miss kalyx.
> 4chan was never intended as a free speech zone
Of course not, it was meant to be (reiterating my point) a bad 2ch clone but it was also a refuge for FYAG users because lowtax used to be the Mao of forums. So if we're debating teleology, being a "free speech zone" was actually one of the reasons why 4chan flourished because people fed up with SomethingAwful had somewhere to migrate to.
>I'm not actually sure what we're disagreeing on at this point
The disagreement lies in awarding "originators of anonymous culture" to people like moot and girlvinyl and also in the argument that views that are distrustful of «women» in spaces like these originate from boards like /r9k/ or /new/. I don't disagree that those two boards are cancer but using them to create strawmen by association to handwave away views that have existed since before 4cvck was born is disingenuous.

i haven't personally seen much persisting with "woman btw" unless it came up in the context of the topic. The thread asks for a lot of info (sus!) including gender. So I don't think someone writing "23/F/states" is attention whoring. (and if someone deems it attention whoring, then why get all triggered and give attention? Wouldn't ignoring actually solve that problem? Instead thread gets derailed) Also this is /hum/. Topics that are gender-specific are bound to come up once in a while. There are plenty of other boards where it's almost impossible for such topics to arise. If someone on /sec/ said "2FA is increases security, woman btw" that would be attention-whoring. But it's sad that in threads like these there are specific individuals for whom their brains evaporate the moment someone mentions they are a woman. You get to hear the most deranged nonsense. And the trans part is largely irrelevant, because chill, you are not about to get married with that anon, so why care if they are MtF or F? I replied to you, because your reply was coherent and less misogynistic, and ignored the rest. it's that easy.
You'd think that after 20 years of being on the internet people would know how to respond to attention-fishing. Unfortunately most of the demographic here seems to have the maturity of a fetus.

lainchan has always tried to have more women on it than other tech places because the previous administration (kalyx) tried to make it friendlier to girls and was harsher with moderation towards stuff that was too boys-club-y. this influenced a few important decisions like the initial selection of boards and the pornography ban. appleman doesn't care about sexism (except when it violates the rules) or gender ratios, but the legacy remains and those older users aren't too far away -for instance, one of the deleted boards was even recreated on another website. its not uncommon when people outside the site talk about lainchan as "cyberpunk for girls", I've heard it like twice now.
>In my estimation over 50% of people claiming to be women are trannies.
this is a wild assumption and goes to show a problem with some of the attitudes being expressed. not a political or moral problem necessarily, simply a matter of being incorrect. For starters, the tech industry is about 20-30% female, and possibly about 40% for STEM more broadly[1][2][3][7]. all of FAGMAN hires above 33%.[4] which is not a majority but still much higher than 5% - even if we assume lainchan is unusually male dominated due to it being an imageboard and due to the presence of guys who harass us off the site, I can't see those numbers being lower than 10% - >2 standard deviations below the mean. for context, in a normal distribution all data >2 standard deviations outside the mean comprises only 10% of the data, 5% on each side. while it would normally demand a serious degree of certainty to claim that 95% of online tech spaces are less male-dominated than lainchan, my point is that even in such an extreme situation the site would be more female than your 5% estimate.
As a side note, the "male spaces" issue is allegedly described primarily by young people across the industry and is stated to put off 30% total, though this could also include racial minorities.[5]
Now, the trans part of the argument is where things get difficult as there is much less data on specifically trans women in the field. it is widely, anecdotally recognized that the proportion of trans women in tech is greater than other fields. however, a lack of data generally shows that the amount is not statistically significant - typically meaning that its a very low number, I don't remember what heuristics I used when i was a maths student but typically if your proportion is smaller than the variance then its insignificant. In the case of transsexuals, I think another factor comes into play that a high proportion of male-to-females present as male or "boy-mode" in their everyday or professional life and might not identify or be identified as trans women in industry surveys - a data source I found claimed that 40% of lgbtq people are not out, and 70% feel they experience discrimination[5]. this would be the opposite of how they identify online, however, and would contribute to the seemingly higher rate of trans on lainchan. that assumes a number of things however - that you actually work in STEM, go to the office, and that you're able to identify every or a significant majority of female-presenting trans person as such. Counter-intuitively, it would actually mean the image of women in the tech industry as trans was smaller than you think, because a significant proportion of those trans were identified as male. From my own experience, I've known of trans identified persons who "boy-mode" or "man-mode" at work but identify as trans or female online.
So to make a long story short, you had a point when you said that trans persons might be more represented online, and lainchan in particular, but if it were true that trans persons did this online then it would mean that a much higher proportion than 10% were women-or-trans on the internet. my guess is that, contrary to what might be reflected on, say, instagram, there is a serious tendency of these individuals to lurk and not interact rather than to post, due to data ive seen about other sites like twitter or reddit. I want to throw in some other data I found because as u can probably guess by now I am autistic and have a maths education with nothing to do: in 2020, only 1% of programmers identified as trans according to stack overflow[6], women in computers has been in a decline since 1990[7], there is also this study with some more interesting data, like how cisgendered females are proportionally more interested in STEM than trans-masculine or nonbinary identified individuals, but that there are about 4 times as many male-to-female than female-to-male individuals in stem.[https://arxiv.org/pdf/2205.01553].

>this is a wild assumption and goes to show a problem with some of the attitudes being expressed.
fwiw its based mostly on irl meetings with lainchan and adjacent online community members, as well as a few cases from irc where I have a high degree of confidence. Obviously its possible that a higher proportion of lain associated women go to conferences and stuff, but these are not numbers I pulled entirely out of my ass. Talking about the tech industry is a red herring, with very weak relation to chan or lainchan demographics.
>trans is not statistically significant, meaning its a low number.
My estimates are once again based on experience and observation. Having been on the chan for years, on the IRC, and in quite a few lain adjacent IRL get togethers over the years, I think I have gained confidence about ~three trannies for every one probable woman I have met. These studies about the tech industry may be riddled with problems or may be perfectly accurate but lain is not the tech industry and so they are irrelevant.
To be honest going to events like c3 and HOPE where contingents from lain were present, I think lainchan may be less female than many tech interested communities. No speculation why that is, its just what seems to be the case.
Of course my data may be flawed. Perhaps most women on lain never mention it, and weakly imply male, so it never comes up. Perhaps they also do not go to events like c3 or HOPE at the same rates as the males. But it certainly seems like there are very few women and quite a startling number of trannies.

not that anon, just think you're full of soykaf
>hr and other crap
HR accounts for 2-3% of a corporation lol and about half of HR are still going to be men.
>I went to a convention and saw trannies
boo fuarrrking hoo, you're hypersensitive to "men in dresses" who are highly visible. all of the stuff you guys have been saying is based on loose associations for instance "lain and other communities", eve online has nothing to do with this place + chances are you think a lot of cis women are trans too not like it matters to you anyway
>women are just in it for the money
you can say the same thing about men and normal people, in fact my experience has far moreso that the ones in it for the money are men. women who want to get rich become anaesthesiologists and other medical professions.
>most forums depend on the top three posters anyway
this is true, some of the most prolific schizos on here are female.

Not the guy you're replying too but you're way more full of sooooykaf than he is
>HR accounts for 2-3% of a corporation
When he said "other crap" I assumed he was referring to managerial roles which when combined with HR probably does account for atleast 25% of an average tech corpo.
>my experience has far moreso that the ones in it for the money are men
This might be true if your pool of "men" includes Indians and other assorted subcontinentals
> women who want to get rich become anaesthesiologists and other medical professions.
Men who want to get rich become anaesthesiologists, as well, that doesn't imply anything about if men in tech are in it because they love it or if they're in it for the money and neither does it say anything about women. Meanwhile his point about biologically-female participation in conferences is a measurable variable that can be used to make conclusions about who is "in it for the money" or due to genuine interest in the industry because most people don't go to conferences to sell a product. It might just be because the audiences of conferences have traditionally been male and have remained as such, but his point is still more relevant than "women who want to get rich become anaesthesiologists". You got upset and so your logic turned off in favor of being contrarian to get back at me.
The argument was people doing work for money aren't going to waste their free time on it too since they have no interest in it beyond getting paid. In other words you cant use a job as a measure for people's willingness to waste time with the same field as a hobby. That's why i mentioned gaming statistics because nobody is getting paid playing games in their free time (streamer outliers don't impact stats) and the gender gap by game type is 99%/1% and not the dreamy 70%/30% other dude envisioned. Autism simulators are 99% men while lifesims/dressup games are women dominated which showcases genders are heavily divided by interest and you can extrapolate this division will exist not only in gaming but other topics too.
