Personality
Phantom · 2018-06-20 20:42
This thread is dedicated to the discussion of personality, theories of personality, and personality inventories.

Have any other anons watched some of Jordan Peterson's Lectures on personality?
Mario Rossi · 2018-06-21 19:59
I don't understand. What is there to discuss about personality? You could have done some intro, like the rules suggest.

I agree. Please, OP, start us off with a more specific example for the topic.

Sample discussion points:
1.) Which model is more correct, the Big Five or HEXACO?
2.) Is there any validity to Jungian typology after all?
3.) When does a personality begin to develop?
4.) Is personality real or merely a socially-constructed illusion?
I was hoping that if I left it pretty open something interesting would develop.

Are you literally an autist with no sense of social context?
OP is obviously talking about psychology behing formation of personalities and how it fits in broader sense of self.

personality, identity, these things do not exist. Where they manifest they cause harm. Abolish identity. Personality is a weak imitation of the creative nothing.

Do they teach you that in those fancy shmancy art schools and gender studies?

Is personality different from ego?

Elaborate?

Personality is, theoretically, a semi-stable set of behavioral/cognitive traits or tendencies that differs between individuals. That's not a perfect definition, but it should serve to give an idea.
I'm confused by all this confusion. Personality is something that is naturally (probably) theorized about by humans from a young age, and it's frequently a topic of conversation, so it shouldn't be a foreign concept to anyone here.
We're talking about personality in the sense of "my personality is different from hers, so our ideas of fun differ" or "that behavior is unusual for someone of his personality."

Ah, I was trying to clarify whether personality is "what you do" or "who you (think) you are". Seems like you're talking about the former, which is handy because I tend to call the latter "ego".

Personality is in some sense an illusion, because it evaporates if you take away the subject. In other words, personification is subjective. My (admittededly unconventional) definition of personality is both subjective and extends to inanimate objects. This is possible because I view personality as something you perceive in others and in yourself, not an intrinsic property of human beings.

Well, I think that "what you do" and "who you (think) you are" are closely related concepts, perhaps linked by the usual understanding of personality (that is, the thing we call "personality" is considered the sum of who a person is and the explanation for how a person behaves). I don't really mean one or the other necessarily. However, since your understanding seems to be so unusual, could you tell us a bit more about it?

I think that personality is "what you do" as in, the learned mannerisms and behaviors we exhibit when we interact with the environment around us. Obviously personality is subject to perspective, but do you think that personality, or behavior, is just perspective in and of itself?

if they do maybe you should go. Hes speaking the truth but youd rather not listen and dismiss it as some overly heady soykaf when it isnt. il admit the way he phrased it comes off like somebody who doesnt even themselves understand what they preach.
people notice things about us and tell us those things, and we choose to identify with them and tell ourselves those things. Have you ever felt anxiety about acting out of character or been like "oh well thats not how I would say it". Can you not realize how even in these instances its totally in your head. Your practically speaking in third person saying "thats not how I would say it". You can say whatever you want, however you want. Whats stopping you.
but i doubt youl listen to anything im saying. which is why I think hes stupid for even bringing it up because no one wants to hear it. you probably actually think what im saying is some mindhack bullsoykaf that isnt real which is absolutely insane to me. I dont have any idea anymore of who I am and dont really have any anxiety about anything anymore because of it. I have no interest in knowing who "i am" because thats implying from the third person knowing myself, of which I cant. I can only build a flawed idea of who i am based on others words from a complete outside view and be trapped by it. I am whatever im chosing to do or say at the moment, and I am to you however you choose to contextualize it and frame me for your brains convenience.

Do you never experience any (involuntary) thought patterns that drive your behavior (if you don't expend conscious effort to change it)? I feel like those basic drives/motivations are what make up your personality. To me, the thing you are talking about is closer to adopting personas or masks, which of course you can control. But saying personality is made up or doesn't bear any influence over a person strikes me as far-fetched.

you are a hypocrite, then. if you abolish personality, who are you? there is someone that everyone else sees--that is your personality. like it or not, you exist through one, it's the only way to interact at all, there is no alternative, and there is no way to show people who you really are. you're a painting, what you display is open to interpretation, who you really are at your core is not.

In my opinion personality is set learned behaviour patterns that result in a behaviour that is manifested through your interaction with other humans. For it to truly be a personality it has to be present at all times and happen automatically without the individual even noticing the behaviour pattern. Personality is mostly formed in childhood by interaction with 1st parents 2nd classmates/other children. Psychiatric literature says that personality and its development in childhood is strongly influenced by genetics. I am not very sure if this role is not emphasized too much. Certain personality traits are imo certainly caused by altered chemistry in the individual's brain but I still strongly bellieve that this chemistry was created during the forming of one's personality (for example people with anti-social pd). On the other hand I bellieve that some personality traits (like hypersensitivity) are caused only by the chemistry and cannot be learned.
Personality can be changed even after it is formed (I bellieve that the personality is done developing around the 25th year.) for a limited amount of time if one goes deep into their subconsciousness and manages to look on his behavioural patterns from a perspective of a different person.
That's just my own opinion I got from Jung's and Freud's psychology as well as bits from psychiatric literature about personality and personality disorders.
