tl;dr: Was mental fatigue due to gaming always that bad or am I getting old?
I have been playing video games since I was a child and always had a lot of fun with it, or used it as a recreational activity; however, lately I notice how playing leaves me mentally fatigued after one hour, sometimes after less time.
I feel as if my brain is exhausted/drained and I can't concentrate on anything now; then I need a break from the "break", if you know what I mean.
Other activities like reading, piano practice or just going for a walk feel actually relaxing.
My question is: Has anyone else noticed something similar? Am I just getting old and can't "handle" games anymore? Or has this to do with modern games getting more and more "flashy" and attention demanding?
I think about just quitting games for a month to see what happens, but I have a serious addiction problem with WoW.

To me those sound like burnout symptoms or something. A break might be a good idea and you definitely shouldn't be playing if it feels like a chore. You said yourself you have an addiction problem so there you have it.

I really wish I had the joy of being able to see your faces as you read through all these useless replies in your thread on lainchan. It gets ultra sweet when somelain jumps in and states that lainchan is an intellectual community, so posts should be digested with special care, when in fact it is only mildly different from mainstream social media, at least as I remember it from ~10 years ago (haven't been using it since). It is funny how people escape to such desolate places blindly thinking there are sparks of intelligence but ultimately end up on the very same places they left. People are the same everywhere, that's it.

You probably subconsciously understand wow is a waste of time and a soykaf game so you feel guilty about spending your time on it.
Good news is if you get away for 2 months you stop caring. Used to be in your spot once but now i hate even the idea of installing bnet and avoid it like the plague.

Not sure what you mean; I posted here because I think of all imageboards I know lainchain is the most civilized with good moderation.

Yeah I should probably do that. I already canceled my subscription, so after that running out we will see.

I started to lose interest in games until I realized I don’t like the new games, but if I play retro games I feel as good as when I was a kid. I’m not talking about replaying things for nostalgia, it’s the same for games I’ve never played. I’m talking about the current games being made for mass consumption while there was a lot of experimentation going on originally.

Not only "mass consumption", but also "as much engagement as possible"; at least this is how I feel about it.
You can't walk 5 meters in a game without some notification, achievement, random event, etc.
Compare this to a game like the original Myst, which contained a lot of walking and just reading.
I wonder if all these flashy "bling bling" in modern games causes fatigue.

Games these days are very demanding: they're high-paced, visually stunning and usually have lot of sub-narratives woven into them that influence your person. There's a thing I wonder: do you only experience this fatigue for World of Warcraft or for other games as well?
If this is only for WoW: you say you've got a serious problem with addiction to this game, and my personal experience with my addictions, is that any addiction is ultimately a drain to you. So, quit playing that game and see what happens when you play other games. Or maybe even try not playing any games at all and see how you are! If that's something you don't want to do, perhaps trying playing less demanding games or games where you decide the tempo of the game (puzzle-games, turn-based games etc.).

Yes, I think you're really on to something. Our minds aren't wired to deal with the input we receive on a daily basis.

Whatcha been playing recently? (Other than WoW.)
>Has anyone else noticed something similar?
I felt this kind of feeling too at some point. This was years ago. I was playing alot of multiplayer games like TF2. Lots of Competitive/social stuff with randoms and close friends. At some point the games I played became dull and I started watching videos (about video games). Doodling here and there, too.
At some point I reconnected with an old friend during the most busy years of my academic life and I started playing vidya games again. New stuff, but same ol' genre. Fast forward, I couldn't keep up VG and studies together. Not even socials outside real life. Long story short We slowly drifted apart again. I connected with new people. No hard feelings. I went Back to watching video. This time studying. I used to draw alot, too. That habit never came back.
Nowadays, now out of college and with a job, I play single player games I really enjoy. Noita, Rain world... Kinda want to make a mod for that game so much I enjoy it. Sometimes the games I play will have multiplayer in them by happy coincidence like Monster hunter. I rarely touch the games i used to play before unless some friends invite me. Really the only times I play multiplayer games is if I get invited to play them.
>tl;dr: Was mental fatigue due to gaming always that bad or am I getting old?
Hmm. Probably not. I like to think this is like a wave. You get into video games, you start to loose interest, take a break, consciously or not and, at one point, maybe a game is going to interest you again. You pick it up, you start enjoying the media once again. Cycle repeats.
If you end up still disinterested in video games, don't be so sad about it. That's how it'll go. You'll find something else to occupy yourself. Sounds like you already did, anyway. And take it easy, Don't think you'll loose a part of yourself. I thought so when I started drawing less, but I still got it. Just a bit rusty. :)

Not OP, but I'd agree with this. I've had less drive to game, produce music, and even study for my program from time to time, and when I do get those bursts, it's short-lived, but I realize I may need as much of a break as I can get from most things to let me recharge.
Thing is, that time of break seems to be quite long in order to get somewhere, something I may not be personally comfortable with doing.

How out of shape do you have to be that gaming exhausts you. Ever been checked for diabetes?

It's infantalizing, braindead, machine-like, and degrading. Exhausting doesn't even begin to describe, the words you'tr looking for are closer to boring, disgusting, pathetic, trough feeding human cattle-like, wi-fi and cell phone brain fried, etc.

Possible. I try to stay clear from big studio games. Since I learned that big companies needs to grow profit, it's hard to think the new games they are all pumping out are any good. Except for a few ones that have yet to disappoint me, but they are all eastern studios and this is due to the east having a much different culture than western studios when it comes to money.
>Myst, which contained a lot of walking and just reading.
I wonder how you feel about the most recent "point and click" games that came out. Things like Disco Elysium for example.
