HIGH SCORE GET: More than 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2023, more than any year on record.
HELIOS · 2024-03-20 23:20
• More than 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2023, more than any year on record (including during wars, the Great Depression, etc)
• An additional 100,000 people died from overdoses this year, in comparison to the ~18,000 in 2000. Many of these are suicides.
• Depression and anxiety disorders are at an unprecedented all-time high. You're probably part of this statistic.
My questions are this:
1. What do you think is causing the great despair? Is it a symptom of an inability for individuals to affect their surroundings? Is it something related to the nature of digital communication and the lack of physical community?
2. How can we fix this soykaf before we're all dangling ourselves off of our bedroom ceilings?

You can't blame the overdose of fentanyl on suicide. That new cheap drug is easy to overdose with and that's how it is.
Despite what the guy above me said, everything is going to soykaf, everyone become poor, it become harder and harder to just have a job and live your life and easier and easier to stop trying. Drug usage is out of control, the economy soykaf on the face of the worker and don't get me started on the action of uncle Sam.
Good luck not having a home, not owning anything, not having any hope for a better tomorrow, having 10 drug dealers in your street alone and keeping it straight.

it was me I did it.
sorry
>how to fix before we all find ourselves dangling off of bedroom ceilings
first of all, ban rope. Who needs it, really ? Climbers you say ? silly sport, don't need it. Occasional legitimate construction uses ? OK maybe, Ill trust the experts but we can require a construction workers license to buy it idk. Problemo solvederino.
On a more serious note I don't know about you but I'm fairly certain that I'm not just going to turn suicidal any time soon lol. Git gud.

ok but why do you care so much? Let people die. At least that way they can have some control on life.

1. Modern society does not promote mental health. I don't mean this in a ultra-right/reactionary way, but it is a fact. It can't be reduced to a certain thing, but lack of strong social ties, economic crisis, drug use, lack of an common set of moral values(religion used to solve this problem before the religion of atheism and the lukewarmness of agnosticism took over), changes in diet(not so much a lack of food but a abundance of junk food and artificial food that has vitamins/minerals but not other substances present in natural foods), lack of physical exercise or the respect for a healthy body and over-stimulation due to the internet are know causes of personal suffering. When we have multiple people experiencing this we also see people searching for some magical solution often in extreme ideologies, the anorexic and vigorexic, the search for an authoritarian savior regardless if he will save you from evil foreigners or crazy capitalists. I am not the first to notice it, a quick search on the internet will show people searching for and exit ('dopamine detox', spiritual retreats and motivational videos like being 'that' girl/guy videos on youtube are ways that people use to flee from this oppression).
And the worst is, that we seem to be in a negative feedback loop where a soykafty lifestyle promotes soykafty mindset that promotes a soykaftier lifestyle(thus the spike in suicides in the 2010s).
2.Difficult question. I guess by disregarding all things that have a negative impact on us even if we enjoy it. In my case for example, i know that i am an internet addict specially a image board addict. Also the internet has introduced me to a lot o bad stuff like stalking/trolling having fun at the expense of other people(think what lolcows do to their victims), gore, extreme porn and actually porn of any kind(since too much desensitizes you).
My solutions so far are:
1- Most Imageboards i used are blocked in my hosts.conf file, i am only browsing lainchan now because i turned on another computer.
2- For the most don't use social media, i have an YouTube account and an Instagram to follow certain topic i like.
3- I have stopped consuming media like junk food. During a large part of my teenage years i read manga/LN, watched anime or played video games to pass time because i was bored. I don't enjoy those things anymore but that's what i do so i kept doing it for years, searching for that one game/anime/manga that would give me a dopamine rush. This is a huge waste of time, the worst thing i did in my life. Because the writing is shallow and repetitive and it becomes harder and harder to find a good series. Since this is an Imageboard i have to say: For the love of god, don't consume media out of boredom do anything else.
4- I have never been athletic, but after being sedentary for years i once felt a HUGE rush of happiness after i started to eat healthy and workout.
5- I am spending more time with my family. Many of my close friends have lost their mothers/fathers and i felt i have weight when i understood(emphasis UNDERSTOOD) that my dad and mom will die in as few decades(at best) and that since i have to work and take care of other life problems the time that i can actually spent with them is short, much less than these few decades.
6- STOP WATCHING THE NEWS, fearmongering is real. I never found a way to stay informed and not be affected negatively by the news.
7- Understand: You must save yourself first, and even then, most people can't be saved.
Lastly i can't speak for everyone/everything but i feel like imageboards users are prone to circular thinking. Try to break that cycle, search for new experiences, meet new people especially if they don't think like you(in my case, it would 'liberal' types).
Sorry for the text wall. I needed to get that out of my system.

>1. What do you think is causing the great despair? Is it a symptom of an inability for individuals to affect their surroundings? Is it something related to the nature of digital communication and the lack of physical community?
-Inflation
-Purchasing power
-Unemployment rate

philosophers for the last 50 years:
"we live in the postmodern times, the collapse of narratives is at the heart of our life, this fog has occupied the social climate as we lost faith in the naivite of modernism but haven't yet come up with an alternative"
people are divided like never before, neoliberal capitalism is on the rise, all dissent under liberal democracy is labeled as "oppositional defiant disorder"
vichan: i wonder what's going on?
how is this real.
Star · 2024-03-23 16:55
the answer might be this: organize. start communities, start leftist reading groups.
i left a message on the I Need Help thread in humanity, about a group that does exactly that, write to me, and i will add you.

dumb take. if you look at countries by suicide rate the happiest places in the world are all tiny latin american soykafholes that barely have indoor plumbing, let alone "purchasing power"

On the other hand, if you look at countries by measurable data, you find that the Scandinavian countries have the happiest people in the world, as usual.

unfortunately for this sort of thing one has to wonder about basic differences between i.e. scandies and costaricans. if costaricans are less happy, is it because they live in soykafhole and not scandiland ? or is it because they constitutionally differ somehow, or perhaps fixate on different sorts of problems, or perhaps simply respond differently to surveys. Some of these seem to be done honestly and without overt deceptive intent, but it is a difficult thing to measure, and once measured, difficult to really interpret into some concrete conclusions in the absence of quite a bit of other information.
Interestingly the scandis, while not super high, are not super low either as suicide goes.

"world happiness report" is propaganda for morons - it being put into a table doesn't make it "data". finland has one of the highest suicide rates in the western world, higher than soykafhole countries like india and most parts of africa
look at suicide rates. depression medication prescription rates if you want. but dumb indexes can be manipulated to mean anything

Yeah but a lot of the happiest places have other things going for them like family, community, and spare time.
Plus we're aware things are getting soykaftier, you can be used to a lot but one of the worst feelings in the world is the knowledge that tomorrow will be worse and you're not sure how.
Six · 2024-03-25 21:08
OK but here we're getting sidetracked into the ambiguous and undefineable realm of measuring happyness. Maybe important to think about, but far less practical than OP's interest in suicide and drug deaths. What I'm seeing from these last few posts is that happyness at least as measured by these organizations is quite likely not actually pertinent. What is?
Terzibashjian · 2024-03-26 04:49
in a nutshell: wealth inequality. happy to be poor when everyone around you is also poor, and its exciting because 20 of your relatives have moved to america to make it big. exciting! hard to be excited when you see in realtime the degredation of your conditions. a country not interested in governing. cant afford a box to sleep in. cant afford food. oh look, a wave of migrants coming to make things worse. and worse.
im checking out. my particular factors are different--mentally ill--but the general decline for the working class in my country is palpable. when you hear uncles saying how expensive rent is now, and how they paid $90 a week when they were younger. now you're looking at 400-700 a week. im taking the train. i would talk about this on sasu, but im allergic to making accounts. can anyone link resources about train suicides? the trains i have access to are surburb/city trains. no very fast ones. i think the energy behind a head on collision should be enough. the hardest part is psyching myself up for it. it wont be painful. toot! toot!

this one knows what up. Every single statistic ranking countries is fake.
Unemployment?
Census excludes people in education so unemployment centers stick the people in education courses to write them off. And they give themselves several weeks "time between jobs" where you dont count either so they dont have to pay for a permanent training but can only infrequently put you into something to write you off.
Crime?
Legislators just legalize crime. That's why they have lower crime - they simply don't count their crimes while doing exact same soykaf. When china steals citizen money its illegal crime, when us does asset forfeiture its legal. In reality its robbery by state either way.

Dubious, brazil for instance has very high wealth inequality, as many of these countries do, and as I understand in a fairly in your face inescapeable fashion, yet pretty low suicide rate. Does greenland have a serious wealth inequality problem ? Clearly there's something more going on here. I think you hint at it with your remarks on future prospects, perhaps the suicidal places simply see the future as grim and dark, whereas the others either don't fixate on it or see it as less so. But I don't think there's a good way to measure this haha. Much of the price stuff you talk about is inflation, which while frustrating I don't think bears too much on the future, just confuses things. Imagine if you lived in argentina or zombibway though, I think these numbers would be crazier.
CHOO CHOO CHOO!

unfortunately this does not change the fact that different countries are different, sometimes very different, and its nice to be able to quantify these differences to some extent. Self reported everything can be questionable, also for the mere reason of government competence. At least part of this happyness survey appears to be directly surveying residents of various countries in a standard fashion, which seems like a pretty good way of doing it* all things considered.
*obviously who even knows what happyness is or can say one guy is happier than another.

>just ask people
you will measure if a country has a culture of complaining or denying issues with that.
And i dont see a reliable way to calculate this aspect out of the data.

yeah it is like kicking dead whales down the beach but its a choice between 'trust the governments to be consistent, honest and knowledgeable' or 'trust random people to be consistent and honest' or 'trust indirect indicators which themselves are of questionable relation and truth to be consistent and accurate' etc etc. This is quite possibly the best...of several soykafty options....to measure a quality of uncertain usefulness or meaning even if known accurately and correctly.
