Writing Prisoners

Spooky · 2024-01-13 20:28
Have any of you lainons ever written prisoners before? It was something I did as when I was in my late teens, but over ten years later I'd like to get back into it. Things seem to have changed a bit and now it appears to be heavily e-mail based through websites and such. Prisoners deserve some companionship too. Anyone have experience doing it? Maybe try it out

>>76945 >ever written prisoners before? It was something I did Who did you write to? >Prisoners deserve some companionship Most of them have some companionship. Are you planning on writing to someone like Breivik? He reportedly sued over being isolated. >Maybe try it out Wasting resources to put myself on some watchlist? Sounds like a bad joke to me.

Imagine being in prison for decades, then upon release seeing how the entire world has transformed into an open air prison after several years in which a large number of people were in solitary confinement. >>76946 >put myself on some watchlist? I think we're all on some kind of list at this point considering breathing is becoming a crime. Certainly all of our communications are being read by our COs.

>>76945 Basically it depends what criminals you are writing to. If you knew them before they went inside that is obviously one thing. If someone famous ends up in jail you can also write them. I bet Martin Shkreli replied to unsolicited letters while he was inside. The only other excuse I can think of is the descendants of famous people. Like if the grandson of Douglas Macarthur ends up in jail writing him a letter might be cool

I wrote some letters but never had the guts to send them. I was briefly enamored by the Michelle Carter case. For lainons unfamiliar, when Michelle Carter was 17, she encouraged her depressed boyfriend to commit suicide. She was indicted a year later and a few years after that, she went to trial and was found guilty. At that time, I read the evidence, which included all of the texts between the two that the prosecution wished to use and some testimony to the content of some phone calls that happened during the suicide attempt. I felt that their texts had been misrepresented. The media quoted the worst texts without context and painted her as some conniving sociopath who did it for fun, but the impression I had was that they were two dumb teenagers who were in love and she was trying her best to help him with his depression. When it was clear (from their perspective) that the only way for him to stop being miserable was to commit suicide, she showed him love, kindness, and support. It felt like she really believed she was helping him and that she was making his last moments alive as peaceful as they could be in his circumstances. I expect that i felt that way mostly because i was projecting because I was suicidally depressed at the time and wished I had someone who was supportive and didn't make me feel guilty for wanting to an hero. I'm not depressed at all anymore and if I reread their texts now, I'd bet I would not draw the same conclusions. So anyway I drafted a few letters about that and how I thought she was an extremely kind person who made a big sacrifice for her boyfriend and that even though she shouldn't have been as encouraging as she was, she didn't deserve all the hate she was getting. But I never sent any because I was scared to be put on a list or something.

Can I do it anonymously? I dont like the idea of police being directly informed of my opinions even if not officially illegal to have any.

>>77217 Literally just fudge the return address, or give a Postal Box that is not associated with you. There might even be laws about police reading mail as protected. I thought about getting a prison pen pal, but my job would probably question my associations with inmates, also most people worth writing were dumb kids who fuarrrked up and probably can't read, or they are terrible soykafty people. I guess some people wrote the unibomber before he died and discussed his books and stuff.

>>77225 In the US, letters mailed to and from prisoners are all screened by the prison staff. The only privileged communication a prisoner is allowed is with their legal representatives. Additionally, prison staff can arbitrarily discard your letter, or the prisoner's response, if they believe there's something nefarious about it. Neither you nor the prisoner is guaranteed to be alerted when this happens. Prison staff will often use this to punish prisoners by withholding their mail with no good reason.
