I genuinely don't understand why people willingly post gore on the internet. Is it some sort of fetish or mental illness? Desiring seeing death and pain is not really something one would think as a survival instinct, so it doesn't seem natural either. Seeing death often means in nature that you are in danger as well. Why is this? What do people that post that stuff get from it? Is it sexy?
Agent Jones · 2024-01-10 19:03

Why people post it.. attention seeking? Or maybe because they think others may find it interesting genuinely?
Why people like it is perhaps a better question. I don't like it much myself but I think that seeing our internals like this is kind of interesting.. it's not about the violence or the loss of life, and sometimes it doesn't evem click that someone actually died in the video, it's so absurd that it feels fictional. Normalization of gore by popular media like i.e. zombie movies has maybe intensified this association of gore to fiction.

Why do so many people post gore? Because many people are attracted to violence. Because a lot of people like blood. Because many people enjoy hurting others. And because many people find it sexy. And why is this abnormal? Because you think so? Who imposed this narrative on you? State? Parents? Was that how you were raised? Is it wrong for you that someone’s brain impulses work/react differently than yours? If you don’t understand something, it doesn’t mean that others don’t understand.

It's just one of many gatekeeping actions. Posting gore keeps certain people away. That's it. That's the point. Yes, it's that simple. Note that I'm not saying it's the only reason, it's merely the main reason you'll see it on so many imageboards and it's why people did it for a long time on a certain imageboard, and it worked like a charm. The (main) reason people would request it is so they could post it later, too.
Lady Jessica · 2024-01-10 23:02

it's a thing you already see in mainstream movies, people think that they will eliminate fear by watching this, but they make such content so that they will eventually eliminate sympathy towards others and when they see it happening they'll just say "Well, I just hope this won't happen to me".
I think the main reason of gore is fetishes. When you get addicted to porn you develop fetishes that look normal at first (like aprons and feet) and then over time you get bored of it and develop other fetishes that you want to look at them "just for the sake of curiosity" until you get hooked again. You might then develop fetishes for femboys, shemales, gay/lesbian p*rn, then you would move for weirder things that are seriously fuarrrked like l*li, gore and real cp. That addiction is literally what makes people pedophiles and can change one's sexual orientation.
Nemissa · 2024-01-10 23:11
I used to think it was gatekeeping, to keep normal people out of niche internet communities. However some people on the same websites would also post things like male genitals. I originally disregarded it as being posted for the same reason and ignored it completely. Eventually I figured, there are actual threads of these people, they aren't posting gay content to keep normal people out, they are posting it because they're gay. Similarly there are people who spam boards with anti-trans content, sometimes with similarly improper images. Those people aren't doing to 'keep normal people out', neither are they doing it because they are into trans people themselves. Another, fourth example of people posting such content is morbid curiosity. There are places where people post morbid content, it's not focussed on gore but more on events and stories; Wikipedia pages of tragic events, news coverage and video of people who were later murdered, things like that. In that case it's not gore, but perhaps the people who watch gore have a similar morbid interest. So whereas maybe a lot of it was gatekeeping, maybe there are other explanations too, like any of the above reasons (them being somehow into it, the trying to harass others with it, or them having some kind of curiosity about it). I'd still default to it being gatekeeping, but maybe those are some other reasons.

Not considering things like news coverage or shock-based raiding/gatekeeping: I take pleasure in cruelty, being the power that decides the life and death of my prey down to the details is exciting. Blood, the lifeforce that animates them, is the most raw symbol of that control. One may also get a fake sense of mercy or nobility by refusing to spill it and opting for other, cleaner forms of cruelty. But 'control' is the cornerstone of it all.
The Plague · 2024-01-11 01:06
I used to know teenagers whose interest in gore was that they thought being more desensitized made them tougher than people who were still upset by it. I think that's probably a major category, kids who haven't gotten over the novelty of it yet and are playing around with stuff that elicits strong emotions.
Ivan Petrov · 2024-01-11 10:47
>>76894
That was a one major factor for my gore consumption when i was a teen. The other major factor was a belief that seeing harsh realities was a good thing and would give me a better perspective on things than just reading about it in the news. I don't believe that to the extent that I used to, but I do think that some of the gore I saw had a positive impact on my life. Easiest example is that I would not be nearly as safe of a driver if I hadn't seen a lot of car crash aftermath images. On the other hand, gore videos can be lead to emotionally charged reactions which I think can push people too far into emotion-based belief systems instead of rational belief systems and some gore videos can be traumatizing to some people, so a lot of people are better off just reading about tragedies instead of seeing them.
Another core factor was that when I was a teenager, i was an antisocial edgelord who thought the juxtaposition of lighthearted text on gore images was funny.
Marly Krushkhova · 2024-01-11 11:51
One obvious reason is kids like being edgy. They want to be different from the others, be it by watching disgusting videos everyone else seems to find too hard to watch.
A more interesting point is that seeing what is happening in the world, even if it is ugly, is sometimes necessary. Think of the allied soldiers forcefully showing German citizens the insides of concentration camps in order to make them realize what they were blatantly ignoring all the time. As a more recent example, I think popular opinion on the Ukraine war would change a lot if war footage/gore would be presented on the evening news. Delivering weapons for Ukrainians to defend themselves sounds noble if you just think about it, but if you see how men are getting blasted to pieces, kill themselves to end the misery, lose body parts and all that soykaf, you start to question if any ideal can be worth sacrificing all of this for and wonder what would happen if you got conscripted yourself. Horrors of war are a reality of our world, is it really such a good idea to look away because it is uncomfortable and then still make decisions that lead to gore scenes happening at another place where you don't see it?

Not OP, but yes it is wrong that someone else's brain impulses work in certain ways and I'll completely own that. You made a good point in your post, not being able to connect the images to the reality that a real person is being harmed shows a distinct lack of empathy.
Sadism, pedophilia, and violent tendencies are all things that society would be better off without if they were eliminated from the species in favor of empathy and cooperation.
Does that mean I think people who hold these traits that don't act on them should be killed or anything? No, but the behaviors should hardly be normalized and should actively be repressed in what ever constructive way possible.

Perfect example of what I mean. People who seek power over others for the purpose of simply having power should be kept away from power at all costs.

Let's assume the situation. You are in a room with two people with you. One of them is a pedophile, the other loves gore, blood, etc. Let me remind you that there are only three people in the room, including you. From the point of view of society/the community in this room, you differ from them in that you consider yourself normal and for them your beliefs, your impulses in the brain are dangerous. Therefore, you must be suppressed, right? Do you work for the sake of society or for your own interests?

I can tell you from first-hand experience that's a terrible idea. I was trying to completely get rid of that aspect of myself for several years and it nearly destroyed me instead. It's better to try and find a healthy way to cope through art or play, which is why I write guro when I get the urges.
I do agree with you that it should not be normalized, but going full-on inquisition mode about it is going to lead to a lot more harm (self and other) from the burst of pent-up tension, guilt and shame.

Maybe its not natural but people like to see their enemies suffer and powerful people like to show off their strength by inflicting suffering on people. There's a beauty in death. I used to like gore because you can see how precious and fragile human life is and how death and even disgusting stuff has a dark beauty to it.

>there are people who spam boards with anti-trans content, sometimes with similarly improper images. Those people aren't doing to 'keep normal people out', neither are they doing it because they are into trans people themselves.
People like this have an inferiority complex. They are driven by a primal hatred of someone or something which they see as the cause of their frustration and personal failure. They end up building an identity around hating this object, it becomes who they are and they get a kick out of it. Deep down they know they secretly like it and it stresses them out so posting gore is one way of releasing stress. Its why you see a lot of interracial blacked porn on racist sites. They hate the idea of black guys sleeping with white women, their paranoid about dick size and their own sexual performance, but they also like feeling like a victim and jealous of some jacked black dude so it turns them on. Rage consumption and hatescrolling like this is probably why the internet is so fuarrrked.

I don't mean that you should have to repress yourself as an individual. I just mean that society shouldn't allow normalization, we agree there. Simple possession of even pizza is a non-violent crime, in other words, not a crime. There also need to be laws to protect people who seek therapy from law enforcement, it's harmful that therapists are required by law to report and or institutionalize their patients when they haven't done anything.
This is what I mean by constructive. Being open with oneself and downloading anything should never be illegal. Sharing pizza should be actively criminalized though.
Guro doesn't need to be censored in the same way, at least not until we're a much much more enlightened species. As long as there is widespread war it doesn't make any sense to expect such high morals from society in a pure sense.
>>76980
This situation doesn't exist because the supermajority (over 90%) of human beings across cultures and across history value not having their children raped or their families, communities and societies mutilated. I'm not saying that the majority of people who enjoy these things want them done to their kin, or will even carry them out, the vast majority of people won't and have more sense about them. But any normalization is very dangerous as the implications of normalization are dire for everyone.
Baseless thought experiments have no meaning or power and pure subjective morality is dubious. There are morals that can be measured. Natural selection doesn't select for these traits, they are harmful. There is no equality in an appeal to a Thrasymachian "might equals right" fallacy here to undermine my words as if the thought experiment has any meaning.
Spike Spiegel · 2024-01-15 21:35

Is it about majority? There are all sorts of cultures in which sacrifice, murder and cannibalism are something sacred. The same with rape and pedophilia, parents gave or matched their child to someone older, depending on their status. And guess what happened... I gave such an impossible example because it shows that in the context of situations, there are different amounts of majority. If we compare the total population, then yes - the majority do not accept this. And then, in this majority of the population, quite a large number of people hide or suppress their inclinations for a number of reasons, including fear of the society in which they live. If for 90% of population gore and pedophilia will be ok, that will make it normal?

Alright, lainon, thanks for clearing that up. The way you framed 'constructive repression' made it sound more like a suggestion for some sort of dystopian societal mass-medication or -therapy. It's bad enough as it is because as you pointed out
>There also need to be laws to protect people who seek therapy from law enforcement, it's harmful that therapists are required by law to report and or institutionalize their patients when they haven't done anything.
This soykaf is precisely why I didn't go seek anybody and just tried coping on my own until something stuck. People around the world are going into a massive purity spiral lately, throwing the word 'pedophilia' especially brazenly around every mildly objectionable content. Once that bone's been gnawed clean, no doubt they're going to go after 'violent content' again.

Projection, inferiority complex belongs to failed men seeking refuge in roleplaying women. I sometimes think that people have an innate urge to kill which is a result of the need to kill predators and attain food from animals that is societally suppressed. As such, they must find some sort of outlet. Really, I think that this is not just why gore is enjoyed so much, but why people are obsessed with true crime and serial killers, as well. They subconsciously can see their own subconscious desires being played out in reality.
For me personally, I always enjoyed gore because I got this really strange, shrill, burning pleasure every time I would watch someone get killed. It was how they twitched and struggled - the look of fear in their eyes; it really, really, did something for me, and I can not describe what it is. The more that they would resist, the intenser this feeling would get. The gurgling noises from getting one's throat slit, the dull groaning paired with the thud of a hammer, the cries of agony - all of these noises I much enjoyed. Watching the life drain out of their eyes was simply gratifying in a deep manner. I will never comprehend this feeling or why I experience it. Sometimes, I find myself ruminating on images like these in my mind obsessively; I replay the scenes in my mind, and these thoughts and images manage to find their way into my dreams and become more pervasive and vivid every day.

>Desiring seeing death and pain is not really something one would think as a survival instinct, so it doesn't seem natural either
Not if you don't relate yourself to others. If you can't "connect" or feel inclusion to society then you will lash out and desire its destruction.
>Seeing death often means in nature that you are in danger as well
Only if you relate to others, as mentioned previously.
Many reasons why you can feel not connected to another person. I for one have been bullied for my intellect. I was much smarter than others, socially isolated and weird made it even so much more desirable for others to exclude me from their social groups. In the end I started to not feel empathy towards others, especially dumb/weak/ideologically inclined. But even before this I had little empathy from my parents that always pushed me away and was cold or viciously harsh to me.
This is basics of antisocial behavior. You not understanding it shows how empathetic of a person you are, because you can't realize not being empathetic towards another. Same thing you can see between any 2 groups where there is distinction. En masse you can see this exemplified. Football teams, political parties, sexual and racial differences.... dehumanization of the "other" starts small and becomes grandiose. This is why most people who wronged someone else is considered a "narcissist". This sort of dehumanization ritual can get into literal rape, killing and physical domineering in extreme examples. Best way to see this is how most burglars go for the fridge to grab something to eat while they're out and about stealing from someones home, "they're making themselves at home" aka literal "rape" and "domineering" of someones elses space, completely dehumanizing and putting that person under them. This is why common courtesy of someone asking you to use your bathroom or asking you for glass or something from the fridge is important, them showing you respect. For those that can't get the physical domineering directly, or are scared of it they satisfy their urges with online material.
I have been diagnosed with autism, paranoid schizophrenia and antisocial personality disorder (colloquially known as sociopathy or psychopathy) so I know what I am talking about.

Mind you, a completely trusting society is doomed to fail. There is significant scientific evidence to show that psychopathy and sociopathy has evolved in need to dominate other tribes and create good social hierarchy of structure.
If everyone in one town trusted everyone, a simple sociopath would come up and steal everything, rape and pillage and go about without any fear. You need a psycho or 2 to be policeman, military, doctor, lawyer, judge or politician (which mind you, most of them are, as shown by scientific data on their empathy).
Tribe that successfully integrated antisocial people inside it was the one that successfully won their battles with neighboring tribes.

Why don't people endorse Total Psychopath Death?
It would seem very convenient for the fake edgy too-online normal people to have a "just get rid of the bad people, bro!" stance. They wouldn't even have to endorse killing them, just barring them from residence/citizenship, office, lobbying or major political party positions.
I suspect because anyone divergent enough to consider such an idea understands that they stand a good chance of falling under any medical definition. Anyone who respects themselves and is willing to endorse violence probably has a suspicion that they may medically qualify.
There is also the base technical aspect. It is hard to validate that a measurement was genuine and without tampering. Even if you had professionals and technicians uploading firmware hashes and multiple-perspective livestream footage to the blockchain people would still wonder if the process has intentional holes.

I think it's because of how some cultures there is so much distance from death it creates a lot of fascination with death and gore. I kind of doubt you would have many people obsessed with gore in somewhere like India where the families of the dead help burn the bodies and dispose of the ashes. Like why do you think medical reality shows are so popular ? Some people just like seeing people's insides. I recently started seeing a ton of gore pics unintentionally and it emotionally hurts me to see them but it's also kind of fascinating and I just wonder if what I am seeing is real or not and hoping it isn't. People watch it and post it because they're psychopaths who think they're cool and powerful. This is evidenced by some of the other replies in this thread.
Also, I think the "you need to see reality" excuse is total cope. Any normal human with a normal amount of empathy can understand someone's pain without seeing a violent video of it, and furthermore, can understand why it would be wrong to watch videos of a persons death, even if they (the viewer) do not feel particularly shocked when seeing violence. People who watch gore use this excuse because they don't understand how a real human thinks.
