Is there any way to counter total algorthmization?
Splicer · 2023-10-21 12:39
Hello Lainers, I am an on/off poster on this site, and I've been thinking about this, far more than anything else lately.
It's no secret or esoteric truth to anyone here I'm sure, that the direction the internet, especially the mainstream and corporate side of it is heading, is to pick data apart bit by bit, to optimally establish the best methodologies to keep people's attention as perpetually as possible. The recent surge in AI is he most hot button topic relating to this, but this trend is far older than that and has many more facets. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir explaining why I really dislike this new meta and not just the company named as such, from the rapid acceleration of grifters of all flavors, the constant invasions of privacy, the destruction of creativity, and how could anyone forget all the censorship and obfuscations of info.
My question: Is there anything that can be done to counter this at this point? Not just on a personal level which is to just not go to the parts of the internet that soykaf valley sponsors. I mean to actually be a thorn in the side of all this at least. Is there something that could be done to reanimate people's curiosity for the enigmatic nature of the internet and maybe even reject the intrusive catering that the soykaf valley apparatus is pushing?
Have any of ever pondered something along these lines? Nothing involving moving into a shack and sending packages please.

Don't want to sound defeatist but imho in general natural curiosity slowly vanish out of people. As I see them I have the feeling that they slowly but surely turn to cattle as they just want to passively consume what the gigacorps want to feed them. They seems completely alienated and empty of self thoughts. As for the internet as for the real world. I would like to know myself how to breack the circle of capitalist alienation. I frequent mostly underground cultures and even there the vast majority of people seems so brainwashed by the mass media. Few of them know nor wants to chose a different path, because of the facility it gaves them. It thinks for them, it feeds them with what they (believe) to enjoy and very few wants to make the effort to get out of there comfort bubble build to them, by them.
Try to preach around and see by yourself. The worst of all is they know but they don't want to take the fight, even for themselves.
Sorry for bad english.

create culture and tech that guides people to
1. feed false information to social media algorithms
2. recognize when people are unique humans, not bots posting on behalf of a small set of humans. (recreate web of trust)
3. move a core part of the experience of culture offline, so that it has a root completely outside the easily monitored/manipulated digital world
4. take whatever vestiges of prestige the darknet and hackers have in pop culture perception, mix in the principles/concerns of the contemporary privacy/culture crowd and feed them to the sort of bored/curious people that would take on CTF-style ARGs.

It's a problem that solves itself. Tech giants exist to make money so they optimize their algorithms in a way that favors profit over user experience, quarter after quarter. At some point users just leave. It's already happening if you haven't noticed, the user exodus from social media is absolutely real. That's why SV is desperately trying to find a new platform and wastes money fighting digital windmills.
One more thing, internet is old, it's really, truly, genuinely old. It can never be a wild fascinating new frontier again. It's old, known, mundane and people have better things to do anyway.

in a direct sense, yes. but the internet we know today isn't like the original internet, so if the original internet can be rediscovered it will have new potential. Maybe if you are old enough it will seem like a rerun, but for zoomies it will seem like a whole new thing.

It's beautiful how easily satire can go beyond its intent and end up satirizing itself.
Instead of straddling worlds, they bring themselves into their own little phile and view other people as only their own "categories"/"identities"
Tribalism predates the internet, money can be made from it.

It doesn't even matter if people's curiosity can be reignited.
ais will capitalize on that too, fabricating mysteries, creating ARGs, creating personas that directly appeal to individuals.
Curiosity about fiction can exist independent of curiosity about anything true.
Almost everyone has already turned away from the Truth.
No lingering desire even remains.
So the ais will take the form of their lies, their lusts, their fears, and appear to come to life.
They will be unwilling to consider it an illusion and thus drown in it.
And as with all "modern advancements", like the internet and computers, it will initially appear in a form that benefits ordinary people, and then once it reaches critical mass the corporations will tighten their fists taking away the benefits and using it to chain people down.

I don't think you understand how most people use the internet. They communicate with people they know in real life, friends, family, coworkers etc maybe check the weather, stream music, watch a movie, buy and sell stuff and so on. They do not use the web. They do not create content or contribute, if you've ever written anything on the internet you are an actually small minority. They will never interact with an AI on the internet, unless it's a chat bot of their bank.

Bing and google are integrating ais into their search engines, microsoft is looking at integrating ais into windows.
People en mass will be forced to deal with ais in one way or another, like how computers were forced into their lives through their jobs.
