Corpo Manager on InfoSec Team

Donna Hawthorne · 2023-08-10 23:00
I used to love working on my blue team. It was a small team that was the type of bitter that comes with a cybersec background and experience seeing awful breaches firsthand. Even the managers were as anti-corporate as you can get while climbing the ladder, and had a cybersecurity background. About a month ago we onboarded a new manager who transferred from another division. This one is clearly using us to climb the corporate ladder and has no security background. Despite this he’s tried to take over several projects and change processes that he doesn’t fully understand. His attempts to correct us are often incorrect and misguided. Even worse he uses the most corpo friendly phrases in his constant communication, soykaf like “adding value” and “process excellence” and “team member advocacy”. My eyes glaze instantly. What can I do without giving up on my projects (need dat raise) to put this guy in place?

You could chat with them about the new guy, probably won't like him, and the stars might align that they'll use their power to do something about the new manager.

List all praiseworthy qualities, especially those that make him unqualified for the job 3. Praise them or simplify them or label them so much they become a vice 4. Name all his bad points by defending and excusing them 5. Hint at a scandal > experience seeing awful breaches firsthand It seems the bubble of your team has itself suffered a breach. I hope your team can practice defense-in-depth, where punctures in the outer bubble skeins do not threaten the integrity of the core identity. Indeed, you might even welcome such outer punctures, like crumple zones or reactive armor. https://nathanbarry.com/design-approval/ https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CensorDecoy > I used to love working on my blue team. Is change a particle or a wave? When the tide comes in you can blame the individual water molecules that flood your sand castle and heave them away in your plastic bucket, but more will just replace them. > About a month ago we onboarded a new manager who transferred from another division. And when this one leaves, will who replaces him be even worse? What pipeline did he come from, and what's next to flow out of it? > infosec Of course what washes up on your beach is of no concern of mine. But what washes up on mine comes from the same ocean, so I seek your temporal intuition. The drone war in ukraine, the poisoning of AI training sources, the chip shortage and the digital currency glut; what is the glacier of damocles bearing down on our fleeting free and open internet?
