How do you feel about popular/rich people generally being psychopaths or sociopaths?
What do you believe is the systemic solution to this problem? Do you believe this is a problem?
Delilah · 2023-07-09 17:39
A far less localized and global society as we have now is the best opportunity for psychopaths who with little doubt now occupy the highest positions available. World renoved actors are just one viable avenue since high functioning psychopaths are by virtue good at it. But also politicians and positions where it's advantageous to step over others to reach the top. In addition psychopaths are aware that while they can not trust other psychos, they know they can still find a compromise or understanding that is agreeable, even if immoral to people with functioning moral senses while someone who isn't one can endanger their scheme by acting on principle.
Imagine this as a sort of nepotism based on a pathology.
This is why I believe we ended up with people being in charge who act almost comedically evil, since frankly they are.
And sure, there's solutions to this but you might not going to like those.

Sociopathic behavior isn't limited to the rich and famous, it's pretty common in America, other developed countries and online in general. Celebrities have a pathological need for attention, trained to think they need to stay in the limelight for as long as possible or suffer career death, they end up pulling dramatic stunts to stay in the headlines and e celebs do the same. Rich people are cruel and psychopathic because many of them are business men, they have to manage a large group of people (workers) who they see as inferior and they're used to living in their own elite bubble apart from society which shields them from the consequence of their actions. They think like Paradox gamers, moving pieces on a board with little care or concern for the people actually affected by their decisions.
There's a story about Himmler visiting some death camp in Poland and not being able to stomach the mass shootings of Jews. He was visibly upset at the sight of women and children being mowed down with rifle fire and threw up when a piece of flesh ended up on his shoe. Yet Himmler was totally fine with ordering these deaths from his office in far away Germany and continued to do so. It's easy to sign away lives with a pen, you don't have to actually watch people suffer. That sense of distance has only gotten worse thanks to the distance afforded by technology.
>How can it be solved?
I knew a Gulf War vet and peace activist who'd show teens gory combat footage to ram home the reality of war and emphasize how easy it is to chant for death miles away and never comprehend it's effects. He'd show them a clip from some mainstream news report showing American cruise missile strikes and then cut to raw footage of dogs picking at burnt out corpses in the desert, or segue form one of George Bush's infamous speeches to footage of helicopter gun ships massacring civilians or American troops screaming in fear as their position comes under attack and they know their going to die. According to him, a lot of the pro-war pro-military conservatives were really shook up by it. Tech creates distance, but it can also bring us closer together too.

>People act evil because of business and the internet.
Haha, I was naive once, too. But I'm sorry to say you're putting the waggon before the horse. Especially psychopaths (and do learn about the difference to sociopaths) are drawn to positions where moral consciousness is more of a handicap and where they get to control others and thrive on that. They're often born that way, too. And those gore videos? They often watch those to get off on them. While to me they just desensitize for what I worry is yet to come.

Do psychopaths just exist, or do people become psychopaths because society encourages that kind of cruel detached behavior and we just label certain people psychopaths and make them fall guys? If certain positions make moral consciousness a handicap, then we're incentivizing a lack of moral consciousness. Is it any wonder that narcissism is now at epidemic rates thanks to social media, whereas before it was way less common? It's also the case that lots of evil people weren't psychopaths. Truman had no problem with firebombing and nuking innocent Japanese civilians, but by all accounts he was a normal person not a psychopath. Osama Bin Laden, according to those who met him, was a warm, friendly and kind person who was incredibly selfless, but he had no problem killing thousands of defenseless people for a cause.
People don't act evil because of business and the internet, they act evil because distance allows them to make decisions detached from cause and effect. If you sit in an office all day and socialize at high society dinners, laying off a couple thousand employees doesn't effect you. You don't see the parents starving themselves so kids can eat, you don't see marital breakdown, you don't see the alcoholism or the drop out kids watching their grandma die because nobody can afford to pay for medical care in a hospital with no ventilator. If your a world away from that reality, living in your own little bubble, then firing a bunch of people is just paper work. People become a statistic and if you have to plunge a 1,000 of them into unemployment to marginally increase profit, you just do it without thinking.
>And those gore videos? They often watch those to get off on them.
I agree with you there. It doesn't work on everybody and a lot of people get off on this soykaf. The same methods don't work on everyone. Ultimately, it's a societal problem and you can't fix it on the individual level. If there's an epidemic number of assholes in society, then clearly we're doing something wrong as a society. Even if psychopaths just exist in nature, we're clearly fuarrrking up if we let them into high positions.

>being laid off is pretty similar to being a civilian war victim, both are caused by sadistic pencil pushers who stand to neither gain nor loose from their actions, and are really quite nice when you get ot know them
>also old ladies can live forever with the power of socialized medcine.
amazing, I never realized....

You may have argued about whether it's nurture or nature but it is a recognized antisocial pathology regardless what the origin is or how much you want to blame society for their existence. Though it does appear like a possible survival strategy with enough benefit that it has lasted to this day. Like you manted your warriors to be cool headed and ruthless. It's just in small village settings there was more accountability while now, with the vastly detached societal stratas, it's esier than ever to get away with incredibly self serving behavior and even thrive while being shielded of the consequences of one's actions after becoming able to afford enough security.
So is it really that distance makes people evil or rather that their inherent predisposition is enabled by it?
And sure, you do not need to be a psychopath to do evil things, a strong enough conviction like Bin Laden can do just fine as well. But he also was an asset of the United States government at first of whom people like Hillary Clinton certainly are displaying indicators of such traits. People were calling the shots who thought arming and training radicals was a good idea. And inb4 muh crazy conspiracy, just look closer at the kinds of decisions she maked and what the accident rate of people close to her are. Another serial killer case of a psychopath murdering prostitutes and young runaways had a wife who swore he was the nicest guy. And after presented with the truth she replied that she loved the man she married and hates the man who took him away.
I believe people who aren't attuned to that sort of thing just often miss to see it so I understand the perspective from which you're talking from that sounds like people are inherently the same on a base level and it's just the circumstances that change them. While enough clinicians would disagree with that notion.

>Truman had no problem with firebombing and nuking innocent Japanese civilians
the fact that he did it doesn't mean he had no problem with it, the public information I've seen from his records indicates he did it with some reservation but with the opinion that it was net good. Whether he was right or wrong is a seperate matter, but he certainly considered the plight of the jap civvies and had a lot of people trying to argue their interests to him.
Also worth pointing out that fighting a war wasnt a purely theoretical concept to Truman, who'd been an officer in Europe during the first world war.
doesn't mean the war against japan and all wasn't made on false pretexts or whatever, but saying truman was a psychopath who just did this without any problem is laughable.
