The unique feeling and psychological effect of the opening of "Serial Experiments Lain" keeps coming to mind recently. I initially saw it as the process of dissolving the world and going to another one, perhaps via a materialistic basis like schizotypal dissociation and conditioning the brain into another state. The bridge, the in between space. Then I saw it as a documentary of sorts. Then I saw it as Ericksonian hypnosis and sympathetic magic, mapping and moving objects around the inner world.
It's like a death and rebirth allegory, torn into pieces and cast deep into an inner labyrinth, and then that which was divided and rendered unconscious must go to the underworld where it will subsist on dust for a time, then it returns. I should have realized at the time though, was totally asleep.
It just hit me earlier that I've actually repeatedly recreated an almost identical ritual space for the last several years. I go to town. I walk through town. I go to a bridge, and I cross over the bridge. The point of going to town is to ultimately cross over the bridge, everything else is the lead in, secondary. I always incorporate a bridge and if there is no bridge I don't find myself going there, ideally also there is no return over the same bridge. In the OP as she is crossing the bridge the wind blows her hat off. She stops the world, leaving the hat (with a bear on it) and the crow in midair. She leaves them behind, both floating there and finishes crossing the bridge. After which she dissolves as well, like the city.
I understood the symbol of the hat, but not stopping the bird. Stopping the bird in middair. This symbol keeps returning to me. I am lsitening to something from like 1950 now, and he describes the process of stopping the bird in midair. I saw a video of a crow hanging in midair, allegedly, run by their local news. The end part where she dissolves you can practically feel.
And long prior to this I would use similar ritual means to go from one state to another. You just map an allegorical or narrative structure, and the structure of your inner world, onto a place or process. Then walking around the loop takes on new effect, its stages new significance. Tesla circled a building 3 times before entering. It is necessary, I think he had the right idea.
It even ends with "I am hurting. I have lost it all. Help me to breathe." And that's exactly what happened. I feel a profound sense of loss. The world is trying to devour me. It failed to truly stop the pulse and so now, for various reasons I won't go into, it's trying to choke out the breath.
But that the opening is a ritual space is undeniable. I learned to see without seeing, know without knowing, and do without truly realizing. Destroying the layers of indirection seems to have compromised the ability to do magic. I feel I have lost my way completely. I tried to be a real person and I think it damaged systems that kept part of the mind in a certain eternal childhood, or adolescent, state. Which means I lost the ability to live in a sort of low grade hypnosis and dip down into theta domiannt states as needed. No theta control, no magic. I cannot feel the world around me. I can't create the gateway or bridge states either, nor visit the in between space. Something is very wrong.

Lainchan truly has fallen. Maybe this belongs on a different board?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST ,Do not whine and cry about 8chan, lainchan.jp, "quality", "invasions", "newfags", mods, bans, or kalyx outside of /q/.)

The bird stopping midair to me seemed to be emphasizing the discovery of the world as unreal and arbitrary.

The persistence and unpredictability of mental change both reassures and frustrates me. What you're describing seems like almost a universal, inevitable phenomenon; you can observe and learn and practice, relying on what is there, but it won't be for very long. Your foundations will shift and the structures built on them will crumble. What meant something once becomes incomprehensible. That wouldn't be a problem, since the act of building is the good part, but it's kind of hard to bother with something if you know it's going nowhere.

boo, there is so many things to say this to and OP's post is not one of them. OPs post is the essence of lainchan in all senses maybe. Like one in 10 threads ties in the human experience to lain these days. How does this belong on a "different board" moreso than the tens of threads of people complaining about stuff they only ask on lainchan because they refuse to solve it belong here more. This is entirely about lain. This is the true lainpost amongst a hundred people just begging for help with things anyone not here could tell them. Stuff they could ask "on a different board"
Even if OP is ultimately talking about far simpler things than he makes out, he clearly loves lain.
OP what is "Ericksonian" and what is "theta control" to you. Why is the bridge so important to you, was it important before lain. What do you mean by tesla circled the building three times and you think he had the right idea. What is the magic to you.

Interesting analysis. Lain is a work of magick, and that intro a treshold into that realm (every show, every display, every work of art is a work of magick, but lain was made with that awareness, so it is magick directed to a higher purpose, to absorb a certain class of viewers, to condense a sort of ethos that the authors already perceived existed, maybe from time immemorial, and of which the likes of Jung before them and shamans long before civilization were well aware).
Lain is a spell that brings this awareness to a new level, to bridge this ancient wisdom with the future, as computer networks and coincidentally, japanese culture come to dominate the Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!.
In that regard, nothing is accidental, and the moment lain "freezes time" (actually she just trascends it, as she leaves behind the hat the the wind snatched off her head), she is taking us into that time-less void that is the wired itself. We have entered a new reality, where the story of lain unfolds to bring us to a new level of awareness.
So it is that each time we watch lain is like a new initiation. Like an ancient tome of deep lore, which we understand only gradually, as each new venture wakes in us a new, deeper understanding, without words and free of linear temporal relations, and many "real world" suppositions that bind us to the imperfect and transient storm of shapes that confuse our minds and cloud our understanding.
