Interesting humans thread.
Post someone that you find interesting and share a brief summary on why you find them interesting? Can be anyone, but it would be nicer if they have a Wikipedia article and/or a biography and if their life is relatively well recorded.
I'll start with pic rel in replies.

Robert James Fischer aka Bobby Fischer was the most dominant World Chess Champion to date. At his peak he was rated over 100 elo above the world number two, whom he crushed in the 1972 World Chess Championship. Yet, he quit competitive chess after attaining the title and his life afterwards is somewhat nebulous.. some will argue that he had several mental issues and/or became a Nazi, but there are also some who knew him personally who will argue that he is very misunderstood and that a lot of the criticism against him is just slander. Very interesting guy, I wonder to this day what caused him to just quit, he was obviously the strongest player alive by a wide margin.

Wtf kind of yaoi pose is the guy doing in this picture?
Technician · 2023-07-08 00:59

But lainon he said why he quit. He loved the game and became the best at it and saw that everyone just memorized everything and hardly loved the game and that it was boring and uncreative, so he made his own variant of chess (Fischer Random Chess) that eliminated the pure memorization aspect of standard openings. There are 960 possible opening positions which means that the game immediately starts with the level of thinking and strategy that would typically not be utilized until middle or late game in standard chess.
I find him very interesting too, and his perspective and disillusionment with what he saw from his time in the spotlight at the top of his game looking down, it was not good what the future held.
Hiro Protagonist · 2023-07-08 03:05
>>72589
I know that he had a problem with how much impact prep had in the game, but the way in which he quit was still very abrupt. After the wcc he gave an interview where he said that he would continue to play. Also, even before the match he almost gave up on the challenge before the event took place. The US government had to call him and convince him to play. Idk what to make of it. He clearly loved the game a lot, I wonder how much the WCC meant to him if anything at all? Maybe he just thought that it didn't really mattered at some point.
Bobby Newmark · 2023-07-08 11:37
>>72593
I actually respect the abruptness of leaving, maybe he didn't feel that there was anything further to prove, that combined with his jadedness about what the chess meta had come to be he just didn't find it fulfilling to pursue competitve chess in that way aynmore, he certainly wasn't going to milk it for all he could. That's not who he is or what made him tick on in life or what he enjoyed about the game. He coulda rode that for a long time, until he wasn't the best in the world, and still keep milking it, muddying up his stats until the chess world decided it didn't have room for him anymore, or he could leave on his own terms.
I'm not going to say I understand him but I understand some his perspective. I'm a bit paranoid myself, and full of passion, but when disillusionment sets in on something it's better to plan to leave it behind and focus on more worthwhile (to you) endeavors.

Fernando Pessoa
A poet in the early to mid 20th Century from Portugal. Only gaining recognition due to the posthumous publishing of his works. I imagine many people on Lainchan will be able to in some capacity relate to his themes of disconnection, tedium at the thought of life and loneliness.

Mark E. Dean is an American inventor and computer engineer. He developed the ISA bus, and he led a design team for making a one-gigahertz computer processor chip. He holds three of nine PC patents for being the co-creator of the IBM personal computer released in 1981. In 1995, Dean was named the first ever African-American IBM Fellow. Dean was elected as a member into the National Academy of Engineering in 2001 for innovative and pioneering contributions to personal computer development. In 2000, Mark discussed a hand held device that would be able to display media content, like a digital newspaper. In August 2011, Dean stated that he uses a tablet computer instead of a PC in his blog.

Major figure in European avant-garde and surrealism movements. Coined the term "Body without organs" and "Theatre of Cruelity". He wrote "Van Gogh: The man suicided by society". Later believed to had gone insane and spent a good portion of his life in mental asylums. I thought that picture was Rotha Lintorn-Orman? In any case, I think Rotha was more interesting anyway. She was also involved with the fascists and was rabidly anti-communist. Her parents stopped giving her money after hearing rumours about her having orgies and doing drugs. I think Rotha hated the BUF, too, who she saw as adjacent to commies and labour activists. Lmao.

Hans Reiser is somewhat interesting. He created the reiserfs filsystem which was somewhat popular for Linux systems in the early 00s (and still sees some use today), did a fair amount of fundraising for Linux filesystem development, had a successful software company (namesys), and murdered his wife.
He met his wife when he was in Russia going on dates with mail order brides. His wife was not a mail order bride (she was a gynecologist), but she was acting as a translator for one of the potential brides that he dated. They married and she moved to America, had some kids, then a few years into it all, he murdered her. He initially maintained his innocence and tried to blame his wife's disappearance on being murdered by one of his friends friend who had falsely confessed to being a serial killer, then also argued that his wife was not dead but had just went back to Russia. He was convicted and then, as part of a sentencing deal, confessed to the murder and lead investigators to the corpse.

Nobody important · 2023-11-18 16:59
Frank Amodeo was a man with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, he had an eidetic memory and an iq of 180, from the age of 16 he had been on a mission to become the emperor of planet earth and create a galactic empire. He was very open with his plans. He gained a lot of wealth and power. He did so much I can't list much, at one point he was going to NATO conferences and telling NATO officials his plans for world domination like a supervillain, he had bought fighter jets, created an army of mercenaries, tried to overthrow the Congolese government, when he failed he just decided to take over their central banks and subsidize militias for a more covert takeover, he ended up being locked up over tax crimes by the IRS because he did his very best to avoid paying taxes, he actually wasn't guilty of any of the charges levied against him but he couldn't defend himself in court because he was heavily drugged by the court so he would not be present of mind during all proceedings, then he was medicated in prison for a year until he lost his chance to appeal his conviction, only then was he taken off meds. If he wasn't locked up he probably would've taken over some nation(s) and started wars. He did need meds, when interviewed one could watch as he'd fly into a manic state, only to slip off into a depressive state and become unresponsive and barely able to move in the course of 5 minutes.

While there needs to be the obligatory mention of everyone's favorite schizophrenic programmer Terry Davis, who could code circles around most if not everyone here at 10 WPM and who was tasked by God to build the 3rd temple in the form of an operating system with its custom kernel, scheduling management, shell, compiler and c syntax which could compile both JIT as well as ahead of time, the person I want to mention instead is Christopher Langan, who despite having his IQ being estimated to be around 200 spent his early career as a bar club bouncer and now owns a horse ranch where he's authoring the "CTMU" which is intended to be a theory of everything or a mathematical proof of god. But from what I understand so far it's basically him stating that we're the universe looking back onto itself, allowing it to actualize itself through our consciousness. Which is imo at the very least an interesting view as well as being far less plain as just seeing yourself as being mere star dust.
Also he let's you use his barbell rack if you're cool.
>>75792
>The vast majority of people aren't geniuses.
You truly are a smart and observant person.
>>75832
The "midwit curve" is real and a fascinating phenomenon. Langan calls it the "danger zone", albeit ascribed it to people of much higher intelligence than what is apparent of the person you replied this to. It's the interesting case where being incapable of filling one's head with academic mind viruses and ego driven overintellectualizations and thus makes one immune to the fallacies and mental pitfalls that come with it and end up with people still being wrong on many things yet are paradoxically more grounded in reality than people generally being much smarter than they are. And only further to the high end will you get people who can see through the clutter of half baked ideas and plain but elaborate and well packaged deceit while also being able to aptly articulate as to why they're nonsense. It's been baffling to me ever since I noticed that pattern.

You can't actually estimate IQ. Someone has to take an actual IQ test and even then different IQ tests can have different results and at different times you can have different results. IQ has various flaws to it too, for starters it never was meant to measure genius it was meant to test for debilitating mental deficits. This is coming from someone with a reportedly genius IQ which im in disbelief of.

If your hardware is better any program will run better, performance correlates across all programs even if not perfect. Same with people. When you look at success then the people who score high, score high across the board. Doesnt matter if its some iq test, school grades or some esport rank. In reality any test will do for a rough ranking.

So like when someone says that Israel has a militant right wing government that always seems to be getting into "accidents" with allies and engagements with neighbors where they always claim the other guy attacked first but their neighbors claim they didn't attack anyone and sometimes have a track record of admitting to aggression with other neighbors.
I can dig it when people say stuff like that but when someone starts talking about Zionists it's a red flag at least to me I can go into their posting history and see they say a lot of things if you get my drift.
Talk about Israel's problems without resorting the nomenclature associated with the weird centuries long conspiracy against Jews. Israel is perhaps the most skilled crybully country of modern times so they will use that soykaf against you quick. Just stick to the facts and what they do.

Israel is a legitimately very small country that doesn't have the depth to defend itself and a lot of enemies that simply don't like Jews. Ignoring everything else about them running A-game propaganda is something they're gonna do.
Now considering that they get into armed conflict at the drop of a hat and aren't the best global citizen. Yeah run that propaganda double.
For the record I tend to really like Jews that I meet and I think Hamas kicked a hornets nest they didn't need to. The whole thing is a complete fuarrrking mess and the only ones who benefit are a bunch of powerful fat old fuarrrkers who couldn't partake in the fights they create if their lives depended on it.

Do you seriously unironically think it even matters if it's a small fish? People make a big deal out of the littlest of things these days so of course it doesnt take some master plan in action to do something. A single individual with no life outside the internet can do a lot.
Project 2501 · 2023-11-26 19:26

Sure, it's a single individual. Let's just ignore the fact that Israel obviously has a huge organized campaign to spread propaganda and misinfo online, including several major, respected news outlets in the US. Let's also pretend that Zionism doesn't exist because it might maybe be construed to mean some Nazi soykaf (ironic that many jews explicitly consider themselves anti-Zionist and describe Israel as nazis). This is the way to combat misinfo online.
