Fuck youtube
Dox · 2023-04-26 00:24
Something finally either cleared, or simpy broke, in my mind. I am sick of youtube. It's almost as bad as television and the effort required to maximize it's utility while not being used by it, is too great. Once you get scrolling you're bombarded with bullshit that's just fatiguing to the psyche. From soyface thumbnails to this clickbait soykaf, like fuarrrk off. Transcripts are machine searchable and I suppose you could skim them or ask an AI for a summary, Whatever. Suddenly, it has all become not obnoxious but outright unnacceptable and intolerable. How fuarrrk of a stupid soykafeating shameless GOYIM do you have to be to jump and dance around like a performing monkey. Hey guys like welcome to my video and thanks for skipping through my 30 second intro, remember to like comment and subscribe, SMASH that like button, fuarrrking DESTROY that bell and comment it really helps the algorithm and if you wan tto donate I have my paypal and patreon in the doobliedoo below. Now here's 30 seconds of useful info stretched out over 15 minutes of video! I watch at 3-5x with mpv, and it's still not worth it.
Disgustingm, fuarrrk these niggercattle. It is toxic to the very soul to look at the neotenous and jester-like song and dance of these ritualistic shameless gnob cobbling cog bogglers and slobblers. Slob this retard BAM. It only takes a few soykafheads to displace enough that everyone has to sink to their level. That's why you cannot build without also actively pruning and destroying. Same mistake everytime, a mistake for the ages.

I never really watched youtube or went on it(with a few minor exceptions notably).
It always struck me as the same type of hyped up social bs like facebook and co full with npc cattle, i knew right off the bat it would grow to this cancer it is now, honestly it is worser than "tv".
I have seen other people use it and heard from them, its abominable, it is a joke of how badly you can fuarrrk up video distribution.
The ancient old method of uploading a avi video on a site was a 1000 times better than all this cancerous crap, from the old flash player to the x264 and w3c bullshit its just a clusterfuck, yt embeded videos doesnt even work for me and when it does the video is either not avilable or taken down cuz of "harmful content".
The advertising and algorithms on it are worse than horrible from my few experiences with it, it is truly revolting how people can like this.
Stuff like yt and fb go to show how low the quality bar is with the smartzombies, they would fight over dogturds if you put a ribbon on it and serve it on a golden plate.

You sure pat yourself on the back a lot.
The old style YouTube (2008-2014) is mostly still there, it just gets the same ammount of views that it used to, about 1 to 100 thousand views in a year or so.
Ytpmv is going strong, for example, even getting a boost with the Mr beast thing that will get more people into the craft.
There's a plethora of long form Content like professionally made documentaries and Podcasts, stand up specials, some unique bloggers that visit interesting places.
I use YouTube and New Pipe on my phone and have a pretty pleasant experience.
You just need to curate yourself and show some restraint. Threat it like food. Some junk food is fine and even beneficial psychologically from time to time, but you shouldn't go to work with 3h of sleep because you were eating chips and drinking soda in the dark all night.
I probably got a while degree worth of education from YouTube, at least in humanities, but also in history, up to date science, geopolitics, what have you.
Yes, there's a lot of propaganda and specific platform induced limitations, but guess what? You can't skip 10 minutes of your professor rambling in the lecture hall or get a detailed timestamp section with notes in the comments for your zoology textbook.

Yeah, you're the guy who capitalized Content in the other thread. What you just described is television. Abuse of the audiovisual motion medium. You could consume all that Content much faster from a book. You wouldn't know Content if it BONKED you on the head, numb nuts.
>Some junk food is fine and even beneficial psychologically from time to time
Yep, here too. Here's basically what's going on. You're a brainwashed oversocialized (likely urban) individual who learned to play ball and maneuver, but never really think. First off, there is no inherent connection between psychologically beneficial junk food and a trade off. It doesn't exist. Junk food is junk because manufacturers load it with poisonous garbage. Second, the phenomena you're tlaking about is known as hormesis, which is strictly windowed.
Yeah, I hate it. People like you with this easy going "don't sweat it bro" grazing cattle-like vibe. You don't see a thing. You're always coping. Your whole inner world isa cope labyrinth and everything that comes out of your mouth is cope.

I'm saying the video format has been diluted and broken to the point where it's an extreme timewaster. It doesn't give returns on the investment. It's a trick. I remember as a child the idea of sitting down to watch a full length movie was investment, like a whole hour and a half, that's a long time. You'd make popcorn, turn the lights off. Now most of this trash "Content" (yes capitalized) is that long. Or it's a bunch of Content sprinkled out over 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there.
No. The idea that you've taken control, are selective, temperance is a virtue, etc is what the trick is built on. Not worth it.

That's your first mistake. YouTube is just free video hosting and a huge catalogue of useful and less useful videos. You are supposed to look for what you want to watch, and not just sit and wait to be fed useful information. You have a soykaf TV-like experience because you watch YouTube like you watch TV. The effort is too great? You could say the same about doing any kind of research on the internet, and about the internet as a whole.
Just to be clear, I don't like YouTube's administration and policies one bit, but it's an extremely valuable website for those of us who aren't mentally handicapped.

>You are supposed to look for what you want to watch, and not just sit and wait to be fed useful information.
Not mutually exclusive. I do both. I wouldn't know about half the relatively obscure channels with high quality information I subscribed to without scrolling a bit or seeing them mentioned elsewhere. Youtube's tagging and search is very garbage unless you have something extremely specific and explicit, like replacing this or that on this or that car model or whatever. Then it works. So no, I totally disagree with you. The platform is designed to encourage scrolling.
Drifter · 2023-04-26 13:55
Youtube has a lot of problems but I find it better than Spotify etc. for background music. Spotify plays the sort of songs meant to be listened to intentionally on their own and can get repetitive, subjectively I have a hard time finding stuff on Mixcloud that is palatable and not crap, and Soundcloud has a mix of those issues. The youtube interface of a thumbnail image to represent the music, selectable from a grid, actually works pretty well for choosing something to listen to because the images normally represent the aesthetic of the music pretty well. My youtube feed is almost entirely full of hour+ mixes I guess because the algorithm prioritizes what you spend a long time 'watching'. It always autoplays more music afterwards, usually from the same genre, never the sort of crap you're complaining about. There are many channels that curate music and put out new collections on a regular basis, and a lot of excellent indie stuff you won't really end up hearing on other platforms. example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRzQuPvLjdU&t=8s. There are whole genres that are mostly just on youtube and bandcamp, and bandcamp is like kicking dead whales down the beach for discovery and autoplay.
Granted youtube would be terrible and unusable for this purpose without browser extensions to remove the ads and bypass the 'are you still watching' auto-pause. Also useful are tools for downloading music, the current state of things is such that a very flexible way of pirating music is downloading it from youtube, to the point where a tool like spotify-downloader literally doesn't even try to download from spotify and instead searches youtube for the requested music and downloads from there.
My only real complaint is that the algorithm tends to bring you back to something you've heard a million times and it's a little inconvenient to switch the autoplay mode to 'Recently Uploaded' every time, which isn't exactly what I would want anyway, old uploads would be fine if I haven't heard them much.

I'm sorry that your clearly superior intelligence is such a burden on you.
What you wrote reminds me a section from Flowers for Algernon where the protagonist is astonished how little the experts know outside of their level of expertise and how slowly they consume information.

You're clearly very into finding clues and quick detective work since you identified me with some other lainon by one word being capitalised. I'm really sorry to inform you that I don't think it was me, I'm just writing from the phone and it auto corrects in strange ways from time to time.
As for coping, not really sure what's so detestable about adaptation, but that's my view of things. You certainly won't have it go back unless you get a dark age, do no point of trying to retard the progress in my view, though I respect your viewpoint.

I think YouTube is the only option when it comes to background music. Spotify is creepy as fuarrrk, and so are most other "music streaming" alternatives - creepy DRM, telemetry etc. With YouTube you can at least just grab the video using some sort of tool like yt-dlp or invidious/piped to mitigate fingerprinting

Yes I agree I used to go to youtube because there are a few decent channels in there. I emphasize a few, because even if there are plenty that have well-meaning content and putreal effort into it and may have interesting topics, the video format is too fuarrrking slow and you can't really just skim as with a book and the information is by nature of the medium never as complete as you could get from a book.
I gotta say, imageboards are just the same. It's 98% chaff, and the bits that are actually worth it for whatever reason are very few and very far in between. Most of the time it's retards who think they're smarter than everyone else.

Everything is about views and the money gained from it. Really if you're looking for information just go read it from somewhere or watch a documentary that wasn't made by a youtuber. YouTube at it's core was supposed to be about making whatever you wanted and sharing it. That's no longer true, it's a huge numbers game where the content is the last thing considered. If you really still need to watch online videos go to Odysee or something or install the unhook browser extension and hide everything except your subscriptions. YouTube is dead, it has been for years and the only thing keeping it alive is that it's the only website with the infrastructure to hold a mass amount of videos that it does.

>it's a huge numbers game where the content is the last thing considered
How do you get numbers without content? What you're really complaining about is that most people are dumb, and dumb people like dumb content. Why spend 10 hours putting together a carefully researched video on the fall of Rome for 100 people who will appreciate it, when you can spend 10 minutes doing a reaction video that 10,000 dummies will appreciate. When all clicks are equal, content gets dragged down to the lowest common denominator. Just like democracy.
Ender · 2023-04-28 12:11

Except that people still do put together and post carefully researched videos on the fall of rome, and those are just as available to you as the clickbait garbage. It's not even very hard to find.
Vasya Pupkin · 2023-04-28 12:37
>How do you get numbers without content?
Content is the LAST thing considered. After you have done enough research and considered what gets the most views and what is most likely going to get pushed the most by algorithms. You're forgetting the most crucial component in how YouTube videos get noticed. You can look for videos on the fall of rome and you'll find it pretty quickly, but you have to manually search for it unless you already watch things similar to it. When you are in a numbers game it's about what's going to catch the most viewers when they are looking for something new on the home page and your videos being pushed when YouTube is on autoplay. This is why kids content gets so many views because kids passively consume content without thought to what they're watching and their retard parents let them.

Because it's not the 90s anymore.
I used to download mp3s back in the day, initially from private servers, then from Direct Connect network (remember that?) and from Soulseek as well. At first my computer was not fast enough to decode mp3s in real time, I had to convert them to wav and with HDD sizes back then that was not optimal as you can imagine. Point is, I used to download mp3s and I played them through Winamp with an Asuka skin before most of you were even born. It sucked and I don't want to do that anymore. DRM? I don't care. Quality? Bullsh|t. Youtube's method for determining what gets front paged/recommended has always been fairly opaque, presumably so they can rig the competition without any pushback. Even without direct intervention they have never been shy about meddling with the incentivized success criteria on youtube. Scripted content used to pop up a lot more when viewcounts were the success metric. Then it became watch time and we were all flooded with 180 minute video essays on how spongebob ruined the housing market or something. Now the company wants to push shorts and now we're getting tic tok reposts flooding the front page. You can't opt out of these aspects of the site and the whole "make any sort of content you want" thing doesn't ring true, especially after the adpocalypse and fair use episodes. The loss of anonymity on the internet means you have to put yourself out there a lot more when posting niche soykaf, and engagement metrics mean that unless you're actively branding yourself no one is likely to even see your work regardless of its quality. Quality is, in fact, disincentivised in favor of quantity by the system as it slows down the stream of uploads (why make 1 good video when you can make 6 sh tty videos). There are still good creators out there but the system is stacked wholly against them on youtube, failing to recognize that its willfull ignorance or solipsism.

I just tested it out to see if it could do what I want. It's not bad, I think I'll keep using it for variety, but searches seem to yield large unsorted lists of albums that include the search string, which is extremely basic as far as a discovery algorithm goes. It seems to be not really a replacement for YT because it is a much more manual process, and what I value here is a way to play an endless stream of undistracting music that flows together, conforms to my tastes and mood, and requires little to no input or consideration from me.
As for DRM and quality, when I want to download from youtube I use a custom script with yt-dlp, there is no noticeable DRM and the default format is higher quality than mp3.

I'm sick of hearing people blame everything on others and refusing to take on just a smidgeon of self determination to stop using services they don't get anything out of. I'm sick of people posting on twitter about how bad twitter is. This thread has exactly that same vibe.

You're not protesting a great injustice, Latin. You're mad that a service that used to be good has turned to soykaf. The simple solution for you is to stop using it. If you really feel like putting on your activist hat, encourage others to stop using it too. As it is the OP and quite a lot of this thread amounts to "I'm special and so much smarter than all these sheeple around me" 16 year old edgelord bullcrap. That mindset is a fast track to mediocrity and self-inflicted loneliness.

living in the woods solution which doesnt really work.
it would be better to work arround the problem than avoid it. I.E. if youtube search is crap make a wrapper search engine that filters out the crap and gives only good videos.

There are plenty of resources that use YouTube as a source of videos while stripping Google's interference as much as possible.
Just use these, problem solved.
If you have issues with how the content is affected by these interferences, that's not only Google, it is mostly advertisers pressuring and it's present everywhere now
So this >>70306
lainon is correct, it's a deliberate tactic to satisfy advertisers

Taking note of the decay of society isn't being edgy.
How is anyone supposed to improve when they aren't honest about themselves, society, and what is right and wrong?

Once again, this means "average". If the average is bad, then you're just agreeing with them while disagreeing with them in every other way. This means you don't know what you are saying. While I do understand that this is a rhetoric technique that was picked up by the commoners, it's unacceptable to not hold a higher standard here.
>>70315
>How is anyone supposed to improve when they aren't honest about themselves, society, and what is right and wrong?
These are not considerations made by those who hold the worldview of "just bend over and take it". To these people, self-determination is a "fascist" buzz-word. It is "edgy" to be against the status quo and "edgy" means "bad", so either join in on the rebellious views that the establishment finds agreeable or shut up.

>Once again, this means "average".
"Mediocre" is not the same as "average", it clearly has different connotations and implications. Mediocrity is stagnated, it is samey, it is boring. Average implies none of these things. Please stop trying to nitpick with the meanings of words lain, I am certain you knew this.
>so either join in on the rebellious views that the establishment finds agreeable or shut up.

Lainon, this was covered. It's seriously exhausting to talk to people about anything, even the most trite soykaf.

But I don't use Youtube, lainon. I just read books.
Marly Krushkhova · 2023-05-24 07:06
I understand people mentioning there still being creative content out there, but before it was front, center, and overall more valued by the platform. Now it seems like something that's a deliberate effort to go and seek out. It's hard to adapt when 95% is sludge, and creators become more obligated to make that content because it's monetizable.

They way I hate it is even deeper than that. Everything ahs been poisoned on a deep and almost insidious level. For example this new trend of zooming the camera in on someone's face, either "for emphasis" or to hide jump cuts. There is a surreal and inhuman character to it, it's shameless, gross, disgusting. the other thing is the addition of just stupid bullshit. Like I'm watching some video on diesel engine repair and when he gets to what would happen to the valve head if XYZ part is slightly wrong they pointlessly insert a short clip of a goat makling this screaming sound. I hate this soykaf. In other cases it's a person's face, or something froma movie. They're literally adding reaction images to videos. Seriously? Meme brain poison.

I know exactly what you mean, I've seen that reaction meme crap more rarely (in my experience) and I click off so fast, even if the video could be useful or otherwise interesting, even the timing of it is off and overdone. It should be siloed to YouTube poops or something like that.

Do you know what this means? I think you don't and that is by design.
For example, we know how you add ISH to everything as a method of pilpul. The cattle accepted ISH to means, in this specific circumstance, IS on their own, so it's not YOUR fault that it worked out this way. Not that you, yourself, are even aware of this specific decision. That's the genius behind it. Do not update the next generation and the knowledge dies out! It worked with everything else.

Yes, and there are even niche content that used to be popular before commercialized clickbait soykaf. I am so glad I kept all the channels from people, who were actually interrested in what they made and genuinely wanted to entertain audience and weren't planned templated projects. And guess what? They are still there, but yes I agree that they get lost behind all the "standard" clickbait garbage that aims at housewives who don't really pay attention to what it is speaking while they are cooking
The Oracle · 2023-05-30 03:44
Because concept of the algorithmic recommendations is bullshit by itself. It's made only for two purposes, for a propaganda and make you aimlessly consume a low quality content for as much as they can hold you.

I've been trying to stop youtube for a few days now. I've still watched a few of them that weren't IT tutorials, but I think I'm getting somewhere.
I'm not doing it because youtube is bad per se. but because no matter how brillant the videos I watch, they're still just escapism for me. I go on youtube mechanically to waste time. I'm only now realising how much time I spend on this website daily.
I don't feel like youtube has made me any dumber, I've learnt so much things just by watching youtube videos. me writing this post is proof of that for youtube has played a huge part in my learning english. still I wanna do other stuff, like go outside, read books or even play video games. but I don't because I'm always watching something.
I've read this whole thread and just a few days ago it would have been unthinkable as I would have gotten distracted and headed to another youtube video. wouldn't say it wasn't a way to waste time anyway, but it's still a step in the right direction.

As awesome as YouTube is, this realization is nuts once you get there. 99% of it isn't necessary for your daily life, so at some point you gotta find that 1%, if you even want to, whether it be educational stuff or the best of the best video to watch on a given day
