Fishtank Live
Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2023-04-20 02:25
Surprised there's not a thread on this yet: What do we think about Hyde's Fishtank Live?
For those that don't know, it's effectively a 24/7 stream of eight (potentially) autistic people locked in a house with no internet or electronics for six weeks, reminiscent of fictional movie The Truman Show and non-fictional TV show Susunu! Denpa Shounen. The goal is to be the last man standing to win $10k, with chances to win more along the way, but only if the contestants don't crack under the pressure first.
It's kind of mixed for me. On one hand, it's a Hyde project involving streaming autists and is incredibly funny, but on the other, it exemplifies a lot of the problems with Internet-based entertainment (parasocial relationships, abuse of the mentally unwell/unstable, willingly spending exorbitant amounts of money unfunny jokes and inconveniences, etc.). I hope that it can stay funnier than it is depressing, but I fear that it will simply miserable later on. Only time will tell.

I swear to God, I feel like I was have seen/read this same exact idea for Fishtank live before.
Special Agent Bob · 2023-04-21 12:21
I haven't really been keeping up with it, but it lookes like an interesting concept, might watch the highlights when it's done. Sam excecutes on the most random ideas.
Switch · 2023-04-21 13:44
The idea is so obvious, I bet tons of people watching the first reality shows back in the day thought "what if this was live 24/7 and viewers could interact with the people more directly".
It's crazy that this is really happening though.
They mentioned that they already spend 30k on the streaming costs alone and its only been a couple of days.
This could one to be remembered, few people do unique and interesting things with a decent budget like that nowadays.
Tequila · 2023-04-21 18:56
My first exposure to this was someone posting some webms of that autistic girl (Josie?) dancing around and stuff. Curiosity led me to some /tv/ threads, where apparently people are falling head over heels for her because "oh god i wish i had a quirky autistic gf like her", only to lose interest once they found out she has a boyfriend. All I could do was cringe because I used to be just like that in high school toward every dorky girl I met. Every single one.
Though I'd still love to know where to find women like this when you're in your 30s and don't live in a big city with hobby clubs and stuff. I was too shy to make a move on any of them during high school, and I couldn't meet any in college since I had to take all my classes online.
Unidentified · 2023-04-21 20:43
I could imagine if I were utterly addicted to streaming entertainment I would find this intriguing. As is I'm just waiting for an edited version.
Some of the contestants are probably going to have nervous breakdowns at some point. Being constantly, actively monitored fuarrrks with your mind.
Ender · 2023-04-21 21:49
From what I've observed Sam advertised it as "torture my prisoners." Day two he spergs out on a person who asked if there will be "free speech absolutism" in the text to speech and yelled about lollys. Turns out the person who send the superchat was a poster who had been spamming the threads on /tv/ with lolly cartoons to see if they had been in the threads. There was a sus push on the board which many speculated to be a marketing campaign for the show possibly even involving the mods due to unusual bannings the organized format. Detractors organized because the text to speech was delayed, price doubled, then heavily moderated instead of being a free for all. They were called troons by Sam supporters (or paid goons, depending on your opinion) because prior to this a trans guy who got fired from Sam's group posted a big info doc on all of Sam's staff including text messages and a bunch of personal email. They believe this guy is leading some kind of crusade against them.
This devolved into a massive storm on /tv/ for the last few days of idiots calling each other sha-hills and troons while posters also debated which female on the show was their favorite.
As far as the show itself its an interesting design but unstable. If they get it working again it's worth checking out but otherwise just watch the clips on youtube.

Never heard of this before, although I'm not surprised. My only question is why would anyone waste their precious time watching such uninteresting garbage? Even 95% of "influencers" on Youtube aren't that interesting to merit actually following them, so why would this be in any shape or form different from that usual trite? You could do literally ANYTHING else with your one-time deal of limited duration on this god-forsaken planet. I mean, hell, if tormenting autistic people is where you get your kicks, then at least do it for real. This isn't really that much different from BigBrother during its hayday, and I think even that had more thought put into it than whatever this is. I personally have never seen the appeal in livestreams in general (to be blunt, there is no worse time sink imaginable in the whole history of human culture than livestreams up to this point), but I'm sure there has to be stuff out there which actually merits following if voyerism is your game. Are people actually that rootless, bored, spiritually broken, lonely and directionless to willingly expose themselves to this or what the heck is this?
Batou · 2023-04-22 04:32
I tuned in the other day and watched an autist with a speech empidiment try to
cook a slab of frozen bacon in a pan, setting off the fire alarm and waking up
all the others which were still asleep by 11am. So far so good.
Picrel really hyped me for the show, tho I'll probably only watch the clips as
well, since I too work for a living.

just trash tv entertainment for lower masses to feel better about their own situation watching someone worse

You wouldn't know the first thing about Content.
That being said, these people aren't even fuarrrked up or anything, they're just weird. Alot of the audience can relate in addition to the fact that putting weird people in a house together will lead to funny situations.

are you really that desperate for views? Try reddit might be closer to the customerbase you envision

Its incomprehensible to you that someone could correct you and not be on the Hyde payroll.
Its simply not "entertainment for lower masses to feel better about their own situation watching someone worse".
That doesn't mean its high art either, but it is/could become entertaining.
Special Agent Bob · 2023-04-23 07:51
Been watching the last few days on and off. Like a lot of other posters have said all the good content will be rolled up into a VOD, twitter account posts or even the DVD set they're offering if you paid so no FOMO. That said I feel Sam might have unleashed a form of media that, if it catches on could really shake up online content in a worse way than streamers do with parasocial relationships and their personalities.
I'm talking modern day hunger games. Or crowdsourcing torture of some hated individual if production costs become reasonable enough. There's enough interactivity to keep people engaged through flipping cams etc..the possibilities and the model are fairly flexible. I don't know whether to be excited or concerned.
Yet Another Lainon · 2023-04-23 08:17
Makes me think of HWNDU. Back in my neet days I would have been glued to this.

Kind of agree. It's pretty fun keeping up with it all and it's nice to have a bunch of other weirdos going about their lives next to mine. Plus they're all pretty entertaining all in their own regards; Josie, Jon, and Damiel especially.
Bobby Newmark · 2023-05-26 12:31
having to sign up to watch the livestream immediately makes me not want to watch it
Tank · 2023-05-27 22:41
the show has gone beyond "degrading" and now it's in the "health hazard" zone. I'd hate to spoil it if you're into this crap but the contestants are being made to eat things that could make them very sick and there are issues with bodily fluids and a defecating animal. it wasn't like this before. just a few weeks ago the production staff made a better effort to look after the safety of the contestants.

The original name for the show was Hell House.
It's a game show and the game is withstanding abuse to get the prize money of 30k or whatever it is. I don't really see the issue.
> eat things that could make them very sick
What have i missed? They've been eating half cooked chicken since the beginning, but not because anybody made them to lmao

quasimodo fed them spoiled eggs and noodles that had been sitting in the sink for a week and they were supposed to guess the seasonings as a challenge

Josie won. Fishtank is now over. A consolation prize was given to Letty. The feed is down. Season 1 has now concluded.

It's not that much considering intimate parts of themselves have been archived forever on the internet. Now they have to go pretty much straight back to their dayjobs.

ye, definitely not worth it. I am baffled by fans saying they want to go on it themselves.
Ivan Petrov · 2023-06-02 10:41
I really hope they don't make a season 2. This whole thing just feels wrong. If this becomes the norm for reality shows then I can only imagine how awful it can get from here. I get that fishtank live can be funny at times, but its still extremely exploitative. The house is a living hell hole, and sam hyde is a narcissistic control freak. The show feels like it is something out of a fictional dystopian future.

they already signed a predatory contract to get on the show, basically signed their likeness away for 3 years based on contract leaks and there’s a stringent nda.

Considering how much of a hit Josie was, there's no doubt every single season's going to have someone like her (if not Josie herself) just to draw in the tfw-no-autistic-gf crowd and all the money that comes with them.
