Where to make friends?
Yet Another Lainon · 2023-03-02 10:03
The internet is full of "social" media and multiplayer games are as big as they've ever been. And yet, it seems like the interaction with other people online is usually anonymous, brief, and fleeting. Where does one go with the intent of forming lasting friendships? What website offers genuinely social interaction that is intended to last, rather than offer random brief encounters like Omegle?

>What website offers genuinely social interaction that is intended to last, rather than offer random brief encounters like Omegle?
None really. Searching close friends online isn't the best thing for many reasons, in my case, my humor is like saying the most stupid stuff while staying serious and then laughing about it basically reveling it's satire, you can't do this online, cause they might think you are a creep and they will block you and you can never explain anything (Happened to me many times).
Honestly the idea of blocking someone is also kinda stupid (I only do that with someone who spams/bots and people I don't wanna be around, but I tell them why before, else how should they learn), IRL you also can't truly block someone and rather rely on police or bouncers as judgement, this has it's ups and downs.
lainchan might be one of the only cool place in the internet cause it's very meta about it's rules, it does not ban you for what you really say(to some extend), but rather how you said it like always arguing your opinion and never just spam. Also because it's very slow you have time to think, which chats or Omegle don't offer.
I had some luck playing card games like yugioh, but it is very stressful to attend and money and also people get toxic.
>1. Probably what I and basically everyone here has to do is finding what you truly want to do.
In my case that would be like philosophy and retro tech/games.
>2. Finding where to do it. This is the hardest step. Your city might not have the things you like.
Not studying in uni yet. It's kinda hard to talk with people about Nietzsche IRL. Also I am not a real hacker so hacker spaces are also pretty meh.
>3. Going there. This is also pretty hard, but the way I overcome this is that however soykaf the situation is, you don't have to talk to those people ever again.
It helps me to call the organizer first.
Also one extra. Best relations online (probably even irl) are non-politcal/non-argumentative (accept maybe communities that have that as a focus). IRL people are way less caring about what you think, online people just block you.
I guess for me the best thing would be friends I can talk about philosophy with, making some sick beats and playing on my N64 with. So basically a very specific obscure kind of people. Guess you also have to make compromises.
Also generally speaking places like IRC and Matrix and Mastodon are ok, but it gets boring like people on those platforms are mostly really into tech, so if you really want to just be online you can't really go around discord. There is also Teamspeak, but not as active as it was in 2015 so yeah pretty sad.
Tank · 2023-03-03 06:33
I'll look forward to seeing you all in VR. I hope you're good people, but I know that many will not be.
Anonymous, brief and fleeting is more a symptom of people. Sure, it might be enabled by a medium, but at the end of the day, it's just a medium.

I thought this thread died like a year ago... I guess it's back.
Here's some advice:
>hobby groups
>religious institution
>martial arts clubs
>tabletop game store (usually have events)
>conventions
>Book clubs & library events
>volunteer groups
No friendship lasts. Deal with the fact that people don't stay i n one place, and the best you can do is is befriend interesting people all the time.
There are even companies that arrange for events for people autistic enough to be unable to arrange for them yourself.

I bet you don't get out much. Everyone here has been suggesting things and you just soykaf on everyone's ideas.
I've unironically had a different philosophical discussion every night this week in every one of the clubs and social groups I am part of. Interesting people like interesting people. We unironically make fun of each other for being the most autistic.
I even made a new friend of a coworker by telling him we've been working together for years, and that even though he's always on time, polite and helpful I don't know anything about him. I asked him where he was from and we just started talking, turns out we have a lot in common and we became friends.
You just need to learn to communicate better. If you want to live in a pod eating bugs and jacking off to your VR furry friends and anime waifus you are never going to make new friends.

Why pretend? Junkie support groups like having non-junkie volunteers. That goes against you saying volunteering is dogshit. You can also get a prison pen pal if you want a friend, all without doing crimes.
I will say that you are the company you keep, and associating with junkies at rock bottom or inmates tends to be an awful experience in general.
The letter writing isn't bad, but why would you want to be friends with people who continually ruin their lives and would possibly try to use you as a lifeline, dragging you into the hell they created.

What website offers genuinely social interaction that is intended to last
the Internet was largely built to sneak a peek into the minds of exactly those people who tend to avoid for whatever reason "lasting" interactions. so why seek them there of all places?
it's kinda like asking which porn channel welcomes your participation into the picture.
> then what do on internet?
- buy domain, rent VPS, run Unix derivatives.
- self-host web presence and daemons to decouple personal knowledge workflow and comms channels from the mind laundry.
- collect 0/? zeitgeist fragments to spookily at a distance invent a better machine for make person do thing (default: give money).
- ...or just use for mental ballast so you don't tip over. comes with an UBI, these days (another hint that influential ai predated all yallz deep dreamz...)
Mario Rossi · 2023-04-17 10:18
I find some friends with local tinder analog (it's not like tinder, more about getting friends, than find love), anyway, only one from hundreds of people there actually stayed with me, and he is from another city.
I tried to talk to people irl and it works, but they still don't interested in me, they already have friends.
People say, I do not know how to speak with people and it's true, I think.
So, I decide to stop searching for friends, bcause it take too many time and effort, and gives you nothing. Loneliness sometimes hurt, sometimes it give you some cool feels of going mad.
Neuromancer · 2023-04-17 12:21
Fediverse resembles the old internet and encourages genuine interaction, especially on the pleroma side. It's easy to find people on the same autistic and edgy level.
Small forums also work too, but I found them to be more of a place to exchange ideas rather than making friends.

This. There was a VRC thread a few months ago. Don't remember on which board. Probably /inter/ ? OP could check it out if he's still around and looking for friends.
Aevisia · 2023-08-26 19:52
I often wonder if it's even really possible anymore. People are so divided on every level. I find it discouraging to invest any time in online friendships anymore, because all it takes is for the person you're investing your time in to have an issue discovering something you don't align with politically or with social issues and then they want nothing to do with you. Folks just can't be themselves anymore and agree to disagree on stuff or just not talk about the things they don't align with. The internet isn't as easy to make friends as it used to be, because that's what it's come down to is people putting social/political views on blast everywhere and only being willing to interact with folks in their echo chambers. I am certain that's part of the problem, but it's so common everywhere now adays, there's not really any avoiding it. So I too am pretty open with who I am and where I stand, because I'm at the point where I'm fed up and don't want to bother wasting time on people who are going to disappear as soon as one thing comes up that doesn't align. I feel like if I just express myself openly, it'll automatically push away the folks that won't bother wasting time on me, and attract those who are like me and also those who honestly don't care one way or the other.
I'm definitely open to making friends though if you're looking for one. I'm trying to break away from using a lot of social media so idk if you have a site of your own or some other way to connect. Email is also an option. We don't ever have to talk politics or social issue stuff if we don't align on it. I'm open to being friends with people of a variety of beliefs and opinions, even the ones I disagree with. We can connect on other things. I feel like it's rare to find others who are also like that. So if you're similar in that regard and open to being friends with me, let's be friends. :)
Find me over at thecozy.cat if you want to be my friend.
