Assesing mental health (Without a professional)

Jim Hilger · 2023-01-20 16:45
Anyone know of practical ways to assess your mental state, and determine how normal you are (emotionally, socially, etc) relative to most other people? My first attempt was to be open with my very well adjusted friends, but they all gave me the advice of "talk to a therapist" and "talk about it with your family". While this is definitely good advice, I can't do the former due to my fear of giving anyone but those very close to me information of my mental health, and I can't do the latter as I would simply be piling on to the stress my family already feels. I tried an online quiz to asses myself, but this just made me even more anxious about my mental stability, with the quiz qualifying me as mentally broken. Do you have a good assessment of your mental stability or lack thereof, and how did you figure it out lain?
Demeere · 2023-01-20 16:53
Forgot to link the quiz I took, sorry! https://moralcrown.com/test/

Why is there a luck component? Anyway, at least you have friends.

>>66268 It found that weird as well, you'd think the luck component would be about starting circumstances (Being born rich in America Vs. Being born in Somalia) >>66269 I'm more surprised you, and my peers, scored so high, especially on the mental. I just assumed what I was missing out in those sections was something felt universally, although that's probably for the best that it isn't. Also re-did my response since it was a month old.

Dujour · 2023-01-20 20:46
Meh. I dunno about 'moral'- I do crimes and such. I don't harm or betray people though, like I won't do ransomwarez or carding, but I'll still take ur box. As for 'social', it puzzles me, because I do not talk to people right now. I wouldn't be too averse to talking to them, though.
Lunch · 2023-01-20 21:22
Mentally, you are in a box, a comfort zone. You can reflect on your current or past states as much as you want, and it could give you a good insight, but it wouldn't change the fact that you are doing it from within the comfy box, and thus only see what lies in store of that mental bubble while everything else that is to you is remains shrouded in mystery, or rather not being known of at all. In order to truly assess yourself, Imo, you need to unbecome yourself, to get into a third person mode, get very uncomfortable, then get very comfortable, expand your array of experiences, and then tear all of that apart trying to figure out why are you attracted to loli feet (jk, sorry, you get the point). Be aware, though, this process takes some time, quite a lot of time actually, so if you are not patient and wary of your emotions, you will simply fall for anything that feels good, rather than figure out why it does so, and how much truth there is to it. The single most important thing on this path is, Imo, getting past your ego defences - your irrational emotion regulating lies you tell yourself, in short. Not all people are capable of this, in fact, I've only ever met a few who are, but even then, they weren't 100% sincere still. Presuming you are 'broken', though, your ego is probably weakened, so you'd might be able to get there. Apart from a cold-blooded analysis of self on your leisure, there are innumerous ways of shifting your perspective of the world and yourself in to, unraveling what is normally hidden; talking to a therapist, getting close with new people, physically stressing yourself, reading some philosophy, meditating, creating art, allowing yourself to be irrationally impulsive and tripping on acid - to name a few. For me personally, being in an emotional rollercoaster of a relationship has had that eye-opening effect (Clockwork Orange movie theater scene style...), but I've got lucky, so it's not like the same will necessarily work for you. Also, I think posting about that quiz wasn't a good idea, quizzes overall are soykaf, and linking it here would probably just have people take it and focus on their own results instead of the thread, even if only subconsciously so. >>66279 Speaking of ego defences, I think paranoid tech-secs are simply victims of their own insecurities. "Oh no-o, the joogle's gonna collect my data, no-o-o!!1" What a larp.

>>66288 I very much doubt it too, in much the same way as running across a not busy but fast road is perfectly safe the huge majority of the time. Not willing to enable js, haven't enabled js in a very long time but the questions were visible so I noted my results. 12/15 physical 3/15 mental 0/15 social 1/15 lifestyle 12/15 maturity 12/15 morality 1/15 luck maybe lifestyle could be 2/15, there is a chance for my life to improve I might enter into a relationship soon because this girl likes me which would then alter my results a fair bit. I won't count on it though. https://similarminds.com/personality_disorder_test.html This site has a lot of personality tests, they shouldn't be taken too seriously but they may interest you. I'll withhold my results for now.

>>66265 Talking with close friends or family is a good way. Online quizzes can help but they are less trustworthy than talking to someone who knows you well (or talking to a professional). I recommend you try multiple different quizzes from multiple different sites. You also need to do some introspection. For example: >Does you mood change very often? >Do you feel angry or sad almost all the time? >Do you feel hyper happy all the time? (to the point where you almost start hugging randos) >Do you feel emotionally numb often? >Do you always try to belittle or hide it if you do something wrong? >Do you often feel that your friends are going to abandon you? Or that they are planning something bad for you? >Do you do things or cause episodes to get attention? >Do you feel that you aren't completely real? >Do you feel that your environment is not real? How about when you go outside your home? >Do you have a problem with substance abuse? If you drink or use drugs, actually try stopping using them for a while and see if it affects you negatively (it shouldn't affect you at all if you don't have a problem with substance abuse or addiction). >Do you do stupid or reckless or weird things? >Do you actually feel healthy? (If you feel sick, there is likely something wrong) >Do you feel happiness? (but keep in mind that it's perfectly normal to not be 100% happy all the time) >Have you lost interest in almost everything? How about the things you used to like 1-2 years ago? >Can you get enjoyment from something? >Are you functional? Can/could you study or hold a job? >(cont) When you need to do something, can you actually do it when you need to? >If you go shopping, do you usually spend a lot more money than you planned? Do you often spend more money than you should? >Can you actually take care of yourself (and your personal hygiene)? What about the required household chores (cooking, cleaning, washing dishes and laundry) and going to the grocery store? >Do you sleep properly? (I mean that you usually get full 8 hours of sleep and you go to sleep before midnight). Also, it's a bad sign if you require a lot of sleep (let's say more than 9 hours, unless you have sleep debt). >Do you often feel so restless that you can't sleep? >Usually, having extreme personality traits or behavior is a bad sign. (for example, being a hikikomori is not healthy for anyone.) But it's usually pretty hard to reliably use them as a measure, however. I also recommend you start keeping a journal (just write what comes to your mind, it doesn't have to be super detailed).

I would probably have higher marks, but being racially conscious is "bad", "tolerance is good", and liberal morality is the only acceptable worldview still. >Doesn't hate others for their sex, race, or beliefs I hate people who believe hurting animals is acceptable. >Wouldn't harm others if the law didn't apply for a day The world would be a better place without many, many horrid people who have gone without justice. >Has never been in a fight, or has only been forced into them If you wrote "yes", you have no convictions or were lucky enough to not have to defend someone >Doesn't believe they are superior to others I absolutely am superior, in some ways, to some. Just as some are superior to me in other ways. >Hasn't done something others would be horrified to find out about In modernity, one cannot realistically say "yes" to this question -- Going without eating meat would horrify some, sex before marriage would horrify some, waiting for marriage would horrify some. I rate this quiz 1/10 - Too bigoted and liberal.
Drano · 2023-01-23 18:31
I give this assessment an F. Dumb questions. No weighting. Poor use of a radar chart, which I would not use at all to describe these results.
Agent Jones · 2023-01-23 19:19
>>66346 >Doesn't hate others for their sex, race, or beliefs I think this is more about not having hatred in your heart for entire classes of people rather than having a moral stance that some people's behavior is unacceptable. I agree with what you said though I would say I hate the selfishness, cruelty and hypocrisy that leads to hurting animals more than the person themselves. The vast majority of people are flawed beings. >Doesn't believe they are superior to others We all have strong and weak points, this is/should be more about being able to have respect for other people as peers, not saying we're all equal. >Hasn't done something others would be horrified to find out about Should be trying to probe for dirty secrets and less about what other people think. It was a bad idea to make this question use the reactions of "others" as the measuring stick. They could definitely be reworded. I don't have anything to say about the remaining two, I think you're right.

It's derezzed for private use, so I wouldn't be able to post the link here, just know that it's available online and should be able to be found within 20 minutes. Joey · 2023-01-25 15:02
>>66380 >only being able to be interpreted by psychologists what this usually means is that the psych can make up whatever diagnosis he wants. This is largely because psychiatry is a made up science. There is no way to prove someone is autistic, no way to prove someone is depressed or adhd or anything else. There are written definitions, but they are imprecise, overly expansive, and subject to significant interpretation, even if they are followed earnestly.

>>66390 I quite enjoy this style of reply. There's an unfortunate degree to which you are correct. Both of these systems would be improved if they were made up of honest, intelligent, conscientious people operating without fear, but this isn't the case. Maybe psychology would be worth something if it was done by actual scientists, but its done by larpers who would contribute more to society if they learned to fingerpaint. At lot of lawyers (and many judges are lawyers) could do likewise.

>>66411 criminal legal system is usually much more complicated than psych diagnostic system. Legal system has many parts, someone has to make an accusation, pay fees file paperwork and take it to court, probably there's a judge maybe there's a jury various bits and bobs. For anything serious it will frequently get appealed. Judge is a small cog in a big machine. Legal systems vary many of them clearly do not trust themselves very much and are full of automatic appeals and such things. If your judge is too friendly maybe he gets removed from your case, no longer has any power at all. Psych system is very different. You get to pick your own psych. Diagnosis ? what is a diagnosis. Maybe psych comes and he talks to you, maybe he gives you a survey, some tests or something, maybe he talks to your family or friends. Maybe he does none of these things. Ultimately he sits down and decides that you have or have not something and thus he diagnoses you. This is all he has to do. Maybe he'll write out a letter, but all it is is his opinion. DSM is very vauge but its also non binding, its a diagnostic tool, its not a dictionary, not a rule book. No rule books exist. Maybe if he gained a reputation for being really bad the government would revoke his licensure, but so long as they havent, he's free. On the other hand, a diagnosis is basically meaningless, has zero pracitcal implications, is mostly just a shorthand for explaining and categorization. If you have a friendly psych, he can diagnose you anything you want. Friendly judge cannot generally just convict you of random things.
Nguoi La · 2023-01-26 23:29
>>66414 not to imply such legal systems work well, for very clearly many innocents are punished and criminals let free, not to mention the ardurous taxation upon the time of all involved even when the conclusion is 'no crime occurred'; simply that the role of a judge in conviction is somewhat peripheral, whereas a psych is firmly in control of his diagnostics.
