Do you Lainons have any life goals? did you complete at least one?
Miho Iwakura · 2022-11-01 06:52
All of them (I mean, without going into details like individual programming tasks) except ever knowing love or sex. I feel comfortable programming in a variety of low and high level languages (from C to CL), I have reached real Wisdom™ (i.e. that actually applies to the way you live) and I have maximized the potential of my body (for example, can do 80 pushups on 2 fingers and have okay 3000 m performance). **As you can guess, my brain prefers to focus on what's painfully missing, it doesn't care about what was accomplished,.**
Leto Atreides I · 2022-11-01 10:35
My life-goals are pretty normal for the most part: Be genuinely useful in some way; have a rich social life, seeing interesting people regularly; graduate; have a job that isn't too painful; living with a couple roommates and/or a partner. I haven't achieved any of these “standard” goals yet, but I'm on the way to graduate, getting a job, and I've been seeing a guy for a little over a year who I think I'll be with for a long while. Other than that, I want to live with as much variety in my life as I possibly can. I don't want to have programming as the only career in my life, I want to do something else after ~15 years or so, go back to school on the side. I want to have several phases that are wildly different from one another. Someone that's healthy and lives healthily can live 100 years— that's enough for four “major phases” in life (maybe careers), and enough for many smaller subphases in how you spend your time, present yourself, and interact with people. Chris McCandless was a deeply unwell man, but he was right about one thing: > If you want to get more out of life, Ron, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life, you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.

I've never had a life goal. Even when I was a kid through young adulthood I never had a clue. I never had hobbies. I never had any idea on where to begin interacting with this world. So I suppose from that the closest thing I had to any goal was to be a NEET. I've achieved that. But I am wracked with guilt and regret. I wish I could have had a life to live. I spend all my time in a maladaptive day dream where I totally leave behind my life and all my family and relations. Change my name and as much about myself as I can and start fresh. It's an insane dream. But maybe I'll be insane from my current life.

I guess my "life goal" is to secure a nice and comfy life forme and my family. Not much. Stuff like "be an artist" or "become a writer, an athlete, get rich" seem to me too abstract and, honestly, kinda pointless. They seem more like labels for the ego. If I were to say "make some big contribution to mankind" or somehow influence a large number of people or future events also seems far fetched. Sure, my values might be in line with some such goal but I do not hold such ambitions myself. I guess I would like to influence someone in such a way. But that would be a consequence of a more modest goal of achieving a good understanding of that which I do.

my life goals? i think i had a clear sight of what they were but i am not quite sure anymore. Since highschool i was interested in academic psychology, and i went into a uni, finished it without failing anything under very very bad circumstances, especially the last year, my thesis was written in a very bad place. I did it however and got on top of that. I left some piece of me with that paper though cause i had two major depressive episodes that summer, i had to follow a certain treatment and it worked actually and i felt better and all, i also decided to leave my folks cause they were insufferable since i can remember and since i got my degree i had no reason to stay with them anymore. I changed the city and i found a job and a place, living alone since then. I have a small group of friends that are very loyal as well and some of them ik since i remember myself. we where from the same neighborhood. So i am covered, a house, a job, a degree. But i wanted more, an Msc to start with, a career in psych but all i do now is... ISP contract sales... I started abusing weed, i am stagnating each day more and more, I lie to my folks about by studies i am to ashamed to say otherwise, I have no motivation to chase my dream anymore, it feels as if i am stuck in time.

My goal is to get out of this hellhole and move all my operations some place secluded, warm and with lots of space for me, plus points if i never have to see another human being ever again. In addition i would like to spend my time doing automation work and build robots of all sorts and kinds. >>63807 I wanted to learn about computers and become a master programmer, a hacker. I've learned more than I thought to be knowable well ahead of schedule. I became as competent as I wanted to be years ago, and venture in unknown territory in this. However, the joy from most of my work dies within days of finishing it. I knew it wouldn't make me happy, and it didn't. I'm much more proud of my creative writing, and I oddly believe it to be because it involved others reading it, which is so alien to me. Some stories I've written are still able to make me happy, despite their relative insignificance. I also enjoy having a website of modest size. Now I'm learning Latin. My progress is pathetic, but I know finishing my books today wouldn't make me happy, so it hardly matters, and at least I progress at all, anyway. Latin, however, makes me happy. Get a job. I completed that but I can't say I'm happy about it. Where I went wrong was mixing society's expectations of me with my own wants, needs, and desires. But in 11,000 BC, where your Primitive Mind lives, there was no such thing as processed food, calories were hard to come by, and anything with a texture and taste as delectable as a Skittle was sure to be high in calories. >>64471 Just do the art for yourself, man. If you can pay the bills some other way, then stopping now means you are more interested in the money or validation of success rather than the process of creating something (which is fine, too, just don't drag artistic endeavour into it). Show work online or at a local art group if you'd like, but consider even one viewer worth the effort, rather than the thousands and accolades that people take as the baseline for meaningful persuit with social media these days. Every hobby is equally meaningless and unreachable if you hold it to that standard.
Hagbard Celine · 2022-12-11 15:34
>>64548 Maybe a question to ask yourself is if you woke up tomorrow a skilled and talented artist, would you feel happy about it, indifferent, or feel robbed of the process of development? In the first case it was the perceived rewards of developing artistic skill and the impact of getting your worldview out there that you cared for, the middle case making art itself, and the final case the joy of cultivation of artistic skill that is meaningful. Demoralisation requires you to have some expectation or requirement for achievement before considering it a win, and that is within your own control. I'd argue making art for the sake of making art, or to enjoy slowly honing a skill is valid. On the other hand, trying to be one of the greats or propagating your own views beyond a close personal circle is statistically improbable and on to a loser (or, at least making the attempt as you have but not pathologizing a lack of success). Be it for altruistic reasons, fame, money or validation there are uncountable numbers of people trying to outperform the average person's reach, and have been with art and music long before youtubers and tiktokers. Enjoy art for art as a hobby, if you'd like, but you'd get better returns on acquiring an unduely large platform with a megaphone and billboard on a street corner. Else join an art group or support group that your can present your message no matter how amateurishly. You have in your control what element to focus on and get enjoyment from, and by focusing on the more humble elements of a hobby or cultivation you have the best chance of accidentally stumbling on conventional success. I understand it can be demotivating to have something in your head and not feel like you can adequately capture it in a physical medium, but as far as I can tell every artist has that frustration - no matter how good you are you can feel skill-limited if you want to, and the solution lies with choosing not to view your work that way, not with becoming skilled enough you never feel insecure about your work.

>>64838 Good goal! I agree that there is a lot of value in Eastern philosophy as a counterpoint to the modern way of viewing the world that is implicit and otherwise unquestioned. There was a flourishing of Eastern Philosophy in the late 50s to early 70s, Huxley and Schrödinger among them, but a regrettable receding of influence since then. If humans are unchangeably self-interested agents, as some believe, the only way for moral actions to not be second-order effects (such as pack survival correlating to personal survival in the primitive, or maintaining oneself as 'one of the good ones' in the modern ego) would be to redefine what the 'self' one is interested for actually is. Tat Tvam Asi. There's a bit of modern silicon-valley-esque resurgence of meditation as mindfulness, and Sam Harris in particular championing a secularisation of a portion of 'Eastern' world-view, but something about these apps making spiritual development a subscription-based service rubs me the wrong way.

>>64839 >There's a bit of modern silicon-valley-esque resurgence of meditation as mindfulness, and Sam Harris in particular championing a secularisation of a portion of 'Eastern' world-view, but something about these apps making spiritual development a subscription-based service rubs me the wrong way. They are used solely as a form of therapy, to make the world as it is more bearable, a world permeated by capitalistic ideology, thus the common use of meditation as a means to increase productivity, be it professional productivity or personal productivity (do more, consume more, "enjoy" life). This is a subversion of a philosophy that was built to free a human being from what is perceived as essentially problematic and irredeemable (human life as a whole for some, or human experience as conveiced from the point of view of obstructed mind, for others). It's not the case that buddhism sees existance as such as problematic, but the solution against the mechanisms that produce what causes us mental suffering also erode that which now we perceive as pleasure: sense pleasures, relationships, possessions, achievements, the idea of ourselves. The "world" (not the physical one, at least not for now) is a dream-like structure built upon a false cognition that "i exist". People like sam harris have their merits, i think it can be useful for some people. He himself had some training in Dzogchen (a tradition of tibetan buddhism), so he at least had some first hand experience, even if mild. I don't think that as a practice it is for everyone, it is not like christianity where everyone should be saved, the whole world should become christian or whatever. As a teacher of mine used to say, buddhism as it really is only appeals to those who are trully fed up of everything use. But its philosophy doesn't depend on the cultural, religious structure built around it, and i do see some remarkable similarities between buddhist ideas and what the phenomenologists were trying to do, and Wittgenstein. One important difference is that buddhists had thousands of years of yogic knowledge and practice to enhance human cognition in order to see clearly elements of our experience that we are too distracted to perceive, and philosophers only have their minds, but verbal reasoning is too limited.

Only goal I could think of would be to solo-dev a game. A decent-sized one too, not just some short game you could pump out in a weekend and get bored of in half the time. I've been wanting to ever since I was 14, played Cave Story, and found out it was made by one guy. It was enough to make me pick up programming and music, but throughout my teens I barely practiced and never made anything worth sharing. For the longest time I beat myself up for it, comparing myself to the indie devs that "made it" and were doing things since their teens, until it dawned on me that my own upbringing was unhealthier than I thought it was. I mean, I was friendless and depressed all throughout youth, but I figured it was my fault just for being an autist. I didn't think my environment growing up was abusive and neglectful. I just thought all kids went through this and I was too weak to handle it. After the epiphany I learned not to (fully) blame myself for not putting in the creative effort most teenagers do. But while the damage isn't my fault, sadly the burden's still on me to fix it. It's been about a year and a half since the revelation and I haven't gotten much better. Sure, I don't hate myself anymore, but I still don't have the drive to create things regularly. Best I can do is a short song (1-2 minutes) or something every few months. So I guess if I really want to make a game, step 1 is clearing up all the baggage that keeps me from making anything to begin with. Don't know if that'll involve seeing a shrink or what. Not that I have the time or money for that.
Unnamed · 2022-12-12 09:06
>>64846 If it's any consolation, in my experience, most people who are driven enough to produce huge works are moderately pathological as well - they just have more to show for their neuroticism. Seek to be mentally well first, and then if you still want to devote yourself to such a poor return-on-investment spending of time (and success gamble) such as solodev that's great, but the reason why the average person isn't so quixotic is because they come from a more objective place and don't seek happiness or validation by proxy.

>>65808 People get distracted with soykaf like family and kids. It's not a problem of neuroplasticity, people cannot dedicate themselves properly to any major project since they are now obligated to work and deal with their responsibilities. As a kid, teenager or young adult they can and often do dedicate the majority of their time to something. If the kid is educated properly he will be exposed to music, math, science or whatever at an early age. If he start playing piano, doing math, etc. at 8 years old, at 20 he will already have 12 years of practice, and this is A LOT of time. The majority of people don't have this kind of opportunity. Maybe they are too poor, maybe their parents simply doesn't care, maybe both, so they will spend their youth wasting time with video-games and pornography (as i used to do). I only got interested in math at 18, i had to start from scratch and now, 8 years later, with a herculean effort, i'm finishing my math degree with a 3.7 GPA and i feel that i have the capacity of a 16 years old junior MIT student. >>65881 As i've said, i understand that the majority of people doesn't have this kind of opportunity. You started this discussion talking about how people over 30 cannot learn anything, which is a lie, and your defensive behaviour doesn't help. I also understand that for a set of reasons it's not probable that such people can change, but it's possible to a degree nonetheless. You are not old, you may need to lower your standards but relative to your starting point, you can achieve a lot. Let's say you live until your 70s, you would have at least 35 years to do something. You may not achieve a nobel prize in literature but you can learn to write well and publish a couple of good books, you can become quite proficient at an instrument and work as a amateur musician, you can learn to paint, you can even become a amateur athlete since you are not too old, and this could happen before your 40s, five years is a lot of time. The problem is that besides your apparent disdain for "normal person values", those same values dictates your behaviour since they may be a source of shame. It's common for anons to answer this kind of thing talking about how it's meaningless to study e.g. music if you aren't Mozart, it's useless to study math if you are not Gauss, you were disdaining people who came back to finish a degree ignoring that relative to their life stories, a degree is a great achievement. People want to be recognized and praised and their self worth depends on that, which for me is a stupid way to live. You can do thing because you want, for your enjoyment and for your own development, you can feel pride over your personal story. That given said, 5, 10 or 35 years is a lot of time and it is indeed possible for an amateur musician to discover himself as a quite creative person, composing some original pieces. These stories aren't common because people choose to give up, or they have to due to responsibilities.

It's an adaptation of the story I mentioned earlier and you could sort of think of the story as a first draft of sorts for the comic, which I'd always intended to do but at the time I started out I wasn't a very good illustrator and I didn't have a tablet so I put it on the backburner. From there, get a slightly better job, that's what I did, Neet, to unskilled labourer, to call center, to basic data entry/paper monkey, to basic administrative, to IT, to current comfy job. Before that I had worked in retail at some points on and off and had cleaned hospital wards before that, I didn't even interview for the hospital and labourer jobs, I sent in an application and got a start date by text. I'm staying where I am for now and working on a degree part time, its a lot of work but its good for my self esteem and is impressing the bosses Fast food and retail are rough but doable and easy to get, supermarket is better, janitor is decent, all these jobs are always looking for people and don't expect you to have much skills, just turn up to the interview in clean clothes, clean shaven, and showered, and you'll probably get it. If you really don't want to deal with people or are feeling anxious about being perceived poorly that's understandable and completely natural, but it will fade with time, if you really struggle with it you can get nightshift work where you don't have to interact with anyone other than maybe the two or three other zombies on the shift stacking shelves or patrolling a building

Even the "standard" is pathetic: "Work hard now so you can enjoy life when you're 60 and your dick doesn't work." But in the current system, depending on where you are, there's not even the expectation of retirement. The options given to people who aren't born with rich parents aren't realistic or even tenable. Most people would literally rather be homeless, because it's more rewarding. That's an extremely deep pile of kaf our society has blundered into. >b-b-but if you work hard, you too can own a business and be a millionaire! The chances of that are so unrealistically slim it's hilarious that it's even considered an option, akin to telling someone, "Why not just be born with rich parents lmao what're you dumb you should have just picked rich parents, obviously." At the moment, my life goal is to establish a solid career in IT as a sysadmin and someday buy my own home somwhere rural where I can build my own DIY backyard telescope. Maybe I'll have a family, but I'm not ready for that yet. I like things to be simple, but comfortable. Personal problems have led me to waste a fairly big chunk of my 20s not advancing my skills, but that has improved over the past 3-4 years. I want to ascend, and I feel like I am slowly getting there. I know that by pursuing this goal I may end up failing in many other "objectives" of a mundane life, but I am willing to take the risk. It is especially trying now that I am at an age where pretty much every one of my friends is married and working on paying off their new home, and I have so many chances to be one of them. But I rejected those chances by choice. I am on this path and I will follow it to the very end. I am dating a person and at many times, she's more of a hindrance and a distraction than anything, and my job is merely a means to an end. But all this is secondary to my chosen ultimate path. Ascendence. If I end up being an unmarried childless loser, it will be because I made this choice many many times across my life, and I am okay with that.

Making a million dollars in order to be financially independent before I'm 30 and spiritual tranquility. I'm about half way there on the financial independence goal and am spiritually on some kind of buddhist path. I recently decided to visit my local Bon Temple and will be going there every week starting in January after a new years trip. Long term I want to be creative again, I used to do film photography and I'd like to get into web design too. Specifically I want to make web 1.0 and 90s/early 2000s looking websites focused around various hobby interests I have. My work grind has destroyed my creative and intellectual abilities, it's awful, but the end of the road is near. I don't need to be loaded, just enough to ensure a lower middle-class existence for me and my family into the future on land that I own. Oh yah, that's another goal. I want to start a family with at least two kids, ideally more but I've got lots of mental health problems so we'll see how much stress I can handle.
