What can a therapist really do to me.

Mitnick · 2022-10-30 17:01
Do you have a story of a time you were seeeing a therapist. Just a normal therapist not a psychiatrist or someone who gives you drugs. Maybe it was a look they gave you or maybe it was the way they said something. Maybe it was the way they chose to bring up a point or the way they said something like "I thought that too". Sometimes I worry if I think about my therapist too much or I worry how much he thinks about me. Sometimes I think that if I think about my therapist more than he thinks about me that I will automatically know more than him and will do well in my next session. I assume he already knows all my thoughts so I always try to pick the best options. I know it makes sense because he says I'm doing getting much better.

>Sometimes I think that if I think about my therapist more than he thinks about me You already do. You have one therapist and there is a week? two? between meetings. He sees people like you five times a day. The last therapist I had admitted she enjoyed arguing with me too much and that it wasn't useful. She later admitted that she wasn't trained to treat someone with problems as severe as mine; I'd been referred to her by a psychiatrist after refusing antidepressants. I think maybe I should have taken the pills after all.

Shop around, there is no perfect therapist. I've been to two, one old guy who just sat and nodded the whole time and charged me $300 for two one-hour sessions, and the other was a middle aged mom-type that would argue with me over pedantic things, like how I felt I would benefit more from a male therapist even after explaining my issues with my father. Seven sessions at $100 an hour, she wasn't a bad person at all but I just wasn't getting any valuable insight from her. The one main benefit is that it forces you to talk and take some responsibility for yourself. But after that you really do need to shop around for someone that resonates with your own unique problems. Also a lot of this is just loneliness; rather than spend money on therapy you can simply try going to different religious groups, even if you don't share their faith they'll be patient with you. There was some free club for lost men going on as well. Lots of free social groups to check out that can do everything therapy does. Personally I got into Buddhism and visit a group once a month that does meditation/sutta discussion.. honestly I still think most the people are tools but, I do enjoy contemplating what the Buddha taught, and these people are tolerant enough of my spergy interpolations of it (guess that makes me a tool too). 99% of it is just exposure to other people, and forcing yourself to own up to yourself.

The truth is a therapist can't do anything for you that you cannot do for yourself. I was and still am suicidal and I battle with it every single day. I recently broke up with my partner of 10 years and now I am a lonely 30somthing living alone with no one to talk to or hang out with and I feel the desire to follow through getting stronger every single day. The reason I bring this up is to explain my last interaction with a therapist. I ended uip calling the suicide hotline after I expressed the desire to kill myself and I ended up with some pretty large gashes in my arm that got me put in the hostpital. Anyways, I ended up meeting a therapist who gave me her number and I ended up calling her after I Got out. I ended up getting ahold of the front desk who informed me that my insurance was unable to cover my fuarrrking mental health cover age and I kind of started freaking out on the clerk and calling them all POS at which point they transered me to the therapist who had given me her number and she started explaining things about "changing the narrative" and feeling the way I feel is not my choice but how I "react to it" is. Etc etc etc. Basically, all the soykaf I had heard before from other people/therapists in my life and then, at this moment, it dawned on me: No one really knows what they are doing and what is going on. No one has the answers you seek. No one can help you but yourself. No one knows what is happening and no one has the answers. Life is horrible and the universe is literally out to kill us at every turn and will if we let it and we are basically trying to survive in a hostile environment the best we can. I Can't repeat this enough: No one has the answers. Either you will cont living or you will end your life and this is where you decide your story/conscious mind ends. It's your choice. No one has the answers you seek but you. Live or die it's up to you.

>>63760 I was seeing a therapist until recently. I could feel that it worked for me. I tried not to think about the sessions when I wasn't there and tried to answer the questions as honestly as possible. Not to choose the "best" answers. When you go to the doctor with a broken arm, you try to show him where it hurts and how much it hurts. Not to show how well you can use your arm. The same principle goes here I believe. The better your therapist understands your mind, the more he can help.

Now if you live, you live by choice, nobody is in control of your life. Therapy is just a tool that keeps you a repeat customer 99% of the time, it should in all truth be trying to have you fix your own problems as quickly as possible.

>>63760 A good therapist was literally a life-changing experience for me - night and day, except not spontaneously, but over a longer period of time (couple of months). Unfortunately, that seems to be a rare experience, which I think is due as much to people's ingrained mindsets towards therapy as to bad therapists or simply therapists who don't resonate with you.

>>63760 I saw one for five years and I just talked about Pokemon, Yugioh, other anime, and how I was half-Japanese when I'm obviously not. Even discussed my non-existant visits to Tokyo and Osaka.

>>63760 For me, group therapy was more helpful than individual therapy.

>>63760 I met a therapist a few days ago. You should talk your heart out with them.

I recently finished with a therapist. She gave me closure that my parents were idiots, probably not malicious, and my childhood treatment for ADHD was totally out of line and lazy. She also helped me sort out and deal with various sources of stress in my life and develop plans around them. She did direct me to a psychiatrist who prescribed me herbal antidepressants and the lowest stimulant dose I’ve ever taken.

I should also mention that I was totally upfront about everything except suicidal ideation. She recommended I switch from vaping to edibles and take t-breaks. Not a big ask and it did make a difference. I was totally thinking about it.

>>63760 lmao'ing at that pic. Literally and unironically thought things like that. Still do occasionally. If something bad happens I just think oh well, I can just erase that from their memory. Watching Lain come to the same conclusion was interesting.
