Is being alone a bad thing?

Otacon · 2022-08-24 19:39
As more and more time passes, I find myself yearning for being a recluse again. I don't know why this is. I used to be a loner NEET and would spend most of my time alone playing games, now I have a job and friends and a life that is becoming successful. For whatever reason I find myself wanting to go back to the way things were. There was a simplicity in being alone, I never opened myself up to being hurt or used in anyway like I am now, and have been even. Maybe it's not even that I want to be alone again and am just yearning for the simpler times. I don't realistically think that being alone again will solve anything especially seeing as how communicating is almost essential for human function. I don't exactly even want to be a NEET anymore per say... maybe just a remote job with limited human interaction outside of the workspace. > Is it alright to be replacing real friendships with online ones? I used to exclusively have online friends who I would spend a lot of time with and have quite a bit of fun playing games with and such. It's strange because they would never be as close as any IRLs you could make I don't think... but they were also extremely close to my personal life with some distance left over. It was comforting and secure at the same time. I feel like with real-world friendships I'm compromising my own safety a lot of the times. Maybe it's past experiences that feed into an algorithm in my brain. Maybe finding friends in just Discord and IRC isn't a bad thing, it seemed to serve me well in the past? > >sorry there are so many points in this I just kind of brain dumped into the text field.

In other words, you want to socialize but don't want to take the responsibility and would rather get into the masturbatory act of playing fake personalities behind pretty profile pictures over the Internet.

>>62038 yeah, it is, humans are very much not built to be socially isolated irl. online friends will keep you from literally going insane, but to be healthy you need real life friends, ideally close relationships, and at *least* one person who you're physically affectionate with (this can mean a platonic friend you hug often or a partner)
John Titor · 2022-08-25 09:14
>It's strange because they would never be as close as any IRLs you could make I don't think... You clearly didn't get into the skid / game hacking culture (or similar) as a kid. Peer learning and shared activities are a helluva drug for friendships, cuz almost nothing you do can harm or degrade them. Still friends with a bunch of people I did stuff like that with, though with the amount of info we know of each other we aren't so 'anonymous' anymore....

>>62038 >As more and more time passes, I find myself yearning for being a recluse again. I'm a somewhat dysfunctional recluse that's suffered serious negative consequences (not even accounting for opportunity cost) as a result, and I want out. I've had my good times and "good times" playing the simulations online too, but perhaps some things are best left in the past. >I used to exclusively have online friends who I would spend a lot of time with and have quite a bit of fun playing games with and such. The way I'd slice this thread is "I want to relapse into internet addiction". Take care to differentiate your thoughts at their various layers - is this a "real" desire, or just operant conditioning? If you were as lucid as you could possibly be (while, for the sake of argument, remaining "yourself") would this still be what you want? >>62046 You probably are (and posting here doesn't help your case zoz). Tribal belonging is almost a "by-definition" aspect of the human mind - if you're alone, you're going to get eaten by wolves. Either you're insane but not conscious of it (a result of not having a "ground truth" human in range) or you really don't need these things, which we call "schizoid personality disorder" or the like. Not that being insane or "insane" necessarily makes you a bad person.

>>62055 Thats interesting, thank you. How could I tell if I am insane? I go to Jiu-Jitsu three times per week, maybe that is keeping me not insane, but I don't really talk to people there.

>>62042 >>62044 >>62055 Over the course of the past day and clearing my head up a bit of all the fuarrrking head fog that comes and goes, this is a similar conclusion to what I came to. I think that, honestly, I'm better off getting socialization with real people, make real connections, and have a good time offline. I think a lot of the issues that plagued this thought process in the first place was more a desire to go back to a simpler time, and I'd argue a happier one. Even so, that's an imperfect thought process and I figure I'd be doing myself more harm than good. >>62055 > "I want to relapse into internet addiction" Honestly, I don't think I could sum up these thoughts any better. I think that this was the conclusion I came to without having my own words for it. There's been a lot of desire to relapse in various things lately. >>62043 >"the amount of info we know of each other we aren't so 'anonymous' anymore...." Thankfully I did have these connections, some real genuine people I (somewhat) keep in touch with. They knew a lot more about me than I'd like to admit, it's a real shame I didn't know them as IRLs I feel like our friend group would've had even more fun that way lolz

>>62038 People on the internet are mentally-ill and online "socialization" isn't actually socialization. You should sign up for or get involved in stuff that pro-social people your age are doing. The first step is to kick your internet addiction. To do this, instead of slumping and gawking for hours you should make it a point to be hyper-aware of what exactly the garbage is that you're consuming. Use invidious and compare it to your YouTube experience, and you'll come to realize that the algorithm and sidebar and stuff, has you watching hours of content of skewed quality but that you're retaining nothing. The shorter form the content, the worse the content. BOOKS---) Youtube videos----) tiktok videos. With each level, you get much worse content and less control over what you're watching. Lingering below a level for too long literally impinges on your ability to consume the more valuable level(s) above. If you waste your time watching YouTube videos related to, plebbit or 4c-ck boards related to animanga, tv/mov, music, books, history, whatever, you literally fill your time and impinge on your ability to actually do these or engage with these things. Socializing on the internet is the same way, If you do this LARP form of socialization, you replace real socialization with this nonsense and become more like these people by being with them and by slumping into the internet as they are. i.e. worse at socializing, more rude, more fervent and occupied with nonsense like your operating system or being an LE old user, more of a sexual deviant. Another MAJOR issue is people telling themselves they're le autistic this is LITERALLY just feeding into your shortcomings, and it's truly truly catastrophic. By browsing imageboards and convincing yourself of this, you will literally develop a psuedo form of autism after a while. Should we mention Reddit, twitter, facebook, porn? The internet fuarrrking is like kicking dead whales down the beach. Wait, did you say cyberhumpcord... how could you possibly think cyberhumpcord is good?
Agent Jones · 2022-08-28 03:54
>>62097 Also, ebin /a/ and /tv/ culture mixed with anime/ hentai/loli stuff will literally will turn you into a pseudo-pedophille.
Hitomi · 2022-08-28 04:17
>>62097 your YouTube experience, and you'll come to realize that the algorithm and sidebar and stuff, has you watching hours of content of skewed quality but that you're retaining nothing. Complete nonsense. The algorithm gives you what you keep clicking. If your youtube feed is full of garbage then make a new account and try to only click on quality videos and you'll see that you never get any short form trash content in your feed.
Mario Rossi · 2022-08-28 05:21
>>62099 If you're addicted and not watching with intent, it's impossible not to indulge some amount. The platform makes it very easy to get sucked into watching videos which aren't very good because you watched a few from the creator or related videos. Being addicted involves half-watching, clicking through the sidebar endlessly, this leads you to finish your session without actually having retained much information from the dozens of videos you just watched. And like I said, YouTube videos aren't nearly as good as printed information anyway, so the information is worse even without the algorithim and stuff.
H.R. Giger · 2022-08-28 09:58
>>62099 >The algorithm gives you what you keep clicking Only partially. They manipulate the results to promote their own garbage and shadowban content based on some AI filtering that is faulty like half the time. It's the TV2.0 and their modern algorithms have nothing to do with youtube pre-2015 where it was plain and straight based on simple ranking and like count. You cannot even guarantee your video with relatively high view count will get into "trending" because there are hidden metrics of view quality and whatnot.

>>62057 He's being a retard. He doesn't know what he's talking about. It's not solitude itself that makes you go crazy. Mental health isn't binary where being in your fuarrrking room on the computer like a NEET all day is going to make you insane. Many people live like that on a day to day basis i.e people who work from home. Saying that being in your room on the computer all day makes you insane is just simplistic, idealist nonsense and ignores other major contributing factors for mental health decline (that have nothing to do with solitude itself). People like him bring up the "hurr prisoners go crazy in protective custody" argument but again, prisoners are already fuarrrked in the head due to different circumstances while growing up and there have been cases of prisoners suriving PC for decades with no stimulation and they turned out fine. If you were insane you would not be using a computer right now. Ignore him. He thinks he's being cool by being an arm-chair psychologist by diagonising you with some meme mental disorder (Why is it always Schizoid personality disorder?) but in reality he's just a over-cautious, sheltered manchild (or a dumb teenager)

>>62038 Depends who you're spending time with. Most normal users in the west are insufferable. It's only natural that you would yearn for reclusion after spending enough time with them, and the same reason you feel more secure with online friends -- they're more disconnected from the cancer that is modern western culture, like you. I would propose that when you are solitary, you are not really as alone as you think you are. I find the only person who can really keep me company in a way I don't get tired of is "myself," I say myself, but it feels like another person. I wonder if other lainons share this experience. >>62039 Do you even know where you are? Virtual personas are no less real than """real""" ones. It's not just that there's no functional difference, there's no actual difference. >>62064 This lainon gets it. When we talk about friendship, we are really talking about kinship. People with a high degree of similarity to oneself with respect to both upbringing and genetics. So few people that you will meet in person fulfill both of these criteria that abstaining from superfluous social interaction is the only logical conclusion given typical modern circumstances in almost any western country. Anyone who disputes this has a brain on par with that of a middle schoolar concerned with who's "popular," and is definitely traumatized. That's an appropriate analogy because feeling the need to "hang out" with people to gossip or play is just that -- infantile; effeminate. Not befitting of an adult male.

>>62291 One. Of Us. One. Of. Us. >>62038 Being alone makes you feel bad because ancestors who were alone and didn't feel bad continued being alone and then struggled to survive/pro-create. Oh course we don't live in the same environment as those ancestors but that's basically it. Feeling bad about something is a warning sign that you are departing from the successful behavior (in evolutionary terms) of your ancestors.
Hiro Protagonist · 2022-09-04 19:49
are there bad things and good things at all? From a certain enlightened eastern-religion point of view, there isnt, and it can feel better to not make such a distinction
Agent Jones · 2022-09-04 19:54
>>62062 Evolution works by making different types of people that arent the same as those who came before in those millions of years. So you seem to have it very backwards. Further, our environment is completely different than in those millions of years now, so different behaviours and genes will now be appropriate. why the fuarrrk flood discarded
Anamika · 2022-09-04 22:07
>>62293 >are there bad things and good things at all? Your hand wants to make a new hand. Your toes want to make new toes. That's what "good" means to evolution. That's why sex feels good and smashing your balls with a hammer feels bad. >>62294 >Evolution works by making different types of people that arent the same as those who came before in those millions of years. Yes and the people who didn't feel bad when they were alone didn't procreate as much as people who did until it became an almost universal human feeling like feel hunger or physical pain. There were also people who didn't feel hungry but they forgot to eat and died out. The more universal something is the more important it was for survival. >our environment is completely different than in those millions of years now, so different behaviours and genes will now be appropriate Over the past few 100 years society has moved much faster than evolution can adapt. It's down to you to fill in the gaps with your general intelligence.

>>62038 Atleast for me it is, every time I interact with my online friends I instantly feel much better and I remember this feeling was much stronger when I had IRL friends. With no interaction I feel like I'm going to go insane. I don't think I'll ever have IRL friends anymore so this type of living is not sustainable I probably have 4-5 years max.

>>62328 No you are wrong. I'm really just that divergent. I don't talk or think the same things. I don't want the same things. Diagnose me with whatever you want I don't care. In history there have been labels for people like me, misanthropes, hermits, cynics. I don't believe I'm unique at all. This doesn't come from a young persons shock at their first taste of friction with the world. I've spent many years in agony and confusion before having to just admit what I am. I'm just a different kind of person. I can't mesh with with most anyone online or in real life. I'm not some stuttering autistic or an obsessive neurotic person. I just am a different person.

Should I feel bad when as I man I dress like thread picture? To your topic: I don't have any scientific points to add besides the ones others pointed. So again, you are a guy who is afraid of responsibility and possible fuarrrk ups. If you can't share your personal view/drama on the world around you with the ones you label as friends/closeups chances are they are no good for ya or you lacked love when you were young and now have a problem to share your feelings with others because of distrust/bad responses in the past. Best case scenario: find a truthful love with whom you can share other parts of yourself besides your genitals. Other adds to point out so this will end up a high quality reply: >my internet friends with whom I masturbate to.. the start of this so called friendship started with an addiction (may it be gayming) where all you do is soykaftalk over internet and play videa for tremendous amount of hours for that sweet dopamine hit even when you feel like a soykafe when leaving the computer at 3 am knowing you lost a whole day doing fun. So yea you end up just like a junkie in a circle of others low minded people. >but what about discord and meeting people there as someone may pointed out here. Internet itself is a bad place to actually get in touch with someone because: 1. on 1 average human there are 10 subhuman idiots 2. on 1000 average humans there is a 1 gem worth talking to 3. there is 100% probability that gem has some mental illness that you have to cope with when having interaction with him/her If I were to give you a honest advice. Go somewhere with no internet and people to make your brain go a bit quiet and find who you really want are/want to larp as.
