just occurred to me that all the videos i tend to watch have less views than my city has people. You think you get mass market media everyone watches visiting the popular site but then realize its just tiny subsection. Are you living in a digital village lain?
Even tried looking for most popular but none were real videos or they were really old stacking rewatcher views. Makes me wonder how fractured the viewers are and if there is anything that can attract 50m+ unique views.

if lainchan is a digital village then yes.

lainchan is just one place you visit. The scenario i was trying to paint is you might look around and find even on popular sites with 100m+ users you sit in a niche under 100k. So all your online interactions occur in bubbles never touching whatever the majority does.
The next question would be are there bigger bubbles than your own and by how much or is everyone sitting in their own bubble about the same size.

I think there's also the element of just nichy-ness, can be even cross platform. I hang out on places like lainchan, but also other places where, lo and behold I run into the same people. I follow a few blogs, and I see my friends from chatrooms posting in the comments. From time to time I meet people from these places, even by accident, in real life, just because thats how it goes. Its not just a pure internet community, why would it be in this age of cheap travel, but a weird abstract meme community.
Hard to tell how big mine is, for I think the borders are fuzzy, but it ain't big.

the vast majority live in digital potemkin villages that have been constructed for them. the algorithm determines where they go, who they speak to, what they believe. the vast majority will defend the lords of their walled gardens without ever even realizing it. reddit, a subconscious army of moderators and arrow clickers protect their overlord's kingdom as they have been trained to do over the course of a decade. The same scenario plays out in any of these walled gardens. What's very uncanny is that the algorithm can construct potemkin villages on an individual basis, never in history has this been possible.
i came to the realization years ago that i too was living in a digital potemkin village. since then i have spent years trying to break out, but it is not easy, the ever looming algorithm building wider and wider walls within the village. when i think I've broken out of the village, i realize I've only left the inner chamber.
>just occurred to me that all the videos i tend to watch have less views than my city has people.
it is good that you are watching videos with low viewership OP, the larger videos will pull you further and further into the village until your mind is completely warped and you are trained like the rest of the residents. however, like me OP you are still within the inner chambers of the village that has been constructed. the creators of these low view count videos often follow in the footsteps of the popular videos, shaping their style and structure to conform. soon enough, they will be cast out or fall in line. the reality is, unless your videos are from small platforms unconnected with the major ones, they will try to build the village around you, and it will be so gradual that you won't even know it happened.

the fuzzing of borders is the problem, as it represents the village expanding. before you know it, lainchan's culture will become generic "chan" culture, which has become popular culture in modern times. just look at what you said here:
>but a weird abstract meme community.
that's broad, very broad, and expansion of the village borders until you are sucked in. once you're sucked in you'll be be algorithmically feed "abstract memes" in the foreground and in the background become a digital slave without you even knowing it.
lainchan is part of the potemkin village, I'm only here because i haven't found a way out yet

Not sure I like this interpretation; If I hang out a little on lainchan, have been in one or both of two chatrooms for some time, and follow and comment on two specific blogs, that's pretty niche. The fuzzed borders I'd say are the little venn diagram areas just outside of this intersection between a whole lotta circles. Does it count if you only follow one of the two blogs ? what If I and <candidate villager> both follow the same different blog ?
part of the trouble is that I've probably got my feet in a couple pretty small neighboring villages. Maybe that's fine. Some villages have always been closer to eachother, than others.
This sort of niche is, I think fairly robust against entryism, just by virtue of the fact that to be in it you have to actually be in it fairly all around. There's skiddies who show up on lainchan and in some chats who'd probably not find these other places, there's people those other places who wouldn't be able to use the obscure chat software to get on the chat. Like living in a remote mountain village. Not too easy to get to, not the most terribly attractive for very much. Attracts a certain type of person who likes it. Only way to kill the vibe will be to find a good ski lift and a place to build an airstrip, and that hasn't happened, just yet anyway.

i see mixed results. Some videos with hard evidence as in citing official reports going against msm narrative on critical topics get deleted within a week but others continue to live on despite having likewise controversial views. It might be a matter of having a controlled adversarial supply so people don't leave for alternative places with more damning evidence which would lose them control entirely of the nonbelievers.
That said its completely a nonissue for hobbies outside the norm. Plastic model videos are free of stupid posts in contrast to say financial videos which will have bots repost scams and other nonsense like repent to god.
As for the invasive memes of mainstream those are partly people fighting for viewers. The whole react content meta is a subversive way to slide in your recommendations and take over viewers from the real creators. Parasites wont even link to the people they steal content from to fill their screentime.
