Purpose

Nanashi No Gombe · 2022-05-11 14:14
Do you care about attaining a sense of knowledge of your life's purpose? What's the closest you could get to stating your life's purpose in a sentence? Would you like to have a sense of purpose that makes you into a person of focused commitment in a certain course of action? This is a thread dedicated to discussing such attainment,

>>58837 For years I've considered mine to be "grog, pals, and good times." I don't really have friends right now though, so it rings sort of hollow for the moment. Still pretty good thought-termination though— it's a silly enough sentence that sometimes when I think of offing myself I'll have a chuckle and remember not to take things so serious. I stand by that god damn sentence. Do drugs, do friends.

Here's one side of the esoteric take. Three books on the esoteric school of Thelema, greek word for Will. They claim to have a systematized process for the attainment of personal knowledge of one's "True Will". >Thy feet in mire, thine head in murk, > O man, how piteous thy plight, >The doubts that daunt, the ills that irk, > Thou hast nor wit nor will to fight — >How hope in heart, or worth in work ? > No star in sight! >>58838 Sounds like a good take if it helps you not kill yourself. Can't argue with those results. >>58839 I'm a slow writer.

Nobody special · 2022-05-11 19:52
I think it's a bit of a pointless pursuit. I could choose a purpose in life which would change immediately if this country was invaded tomorrow or if a girl I'd... "met" called to tell me she was pregnant. I mean I thought I had found my purpose when I was 12 and thought I was going after that goal. By the time I was 18, I'd learned a few things about the way the world works as well as about myself, which made that original dream not only seem silly but also undesirable and even against what I'd come to believe in. >>58839 >slide thread What?

>>58838 >Do drugs, do friends. Is that a purpose? A reason to be? >>58869 >I think it's a bit of a pointless pursuit. I could choose a purpose in life which would change immediately if... That's interesting. Self actualization because of an unexpected situation or because of a step forward in personal maturity. Such dynamics may bring forth not necessarily the abandonment of an old sense of purpose, but its transcendence. For example: >"My purpose is to become a great soccer player" (A) >Breaks a leg >"My purpose is to become a great soccer commentator/expert" (B) So from (A) and (B) he could conclude that his actual vocation, passion or whatever is actually soccer, in any of its forms. And maybe some time later he actualizes it because he discovers that his thing is not just soccer but sports in general. Etc. So, it's a moving target to which you get progressively closer. Or maybe your word is "explorer". So when you're 5 you wanna be Indiana Jones when you grow up. By the time you're 10 you've come to your senses a little so now you want to be an astronaut. As a young adult you've traded that in for studying astrophysics. And by the time you're 70 you fulfill that longing by reading some scifi every now and then.

Pulse · 2022-05-11 22:33
>>58875 >> Do drugs, do friends. > Is that a purpose? A reason to be? It's about as valid as anything else, really. All a "purpose" has to do is be a narrative that (at least) keeps you alive. It doesn't really matter if that reason is hedonistic (soccer, friends, drugs) or useful/socially good (volunteering, social work), it's just gotta do the job.
Shogun · 2022-05-12 08:09
>>58883 >having no purpose is a purpose, broooo Having an actual reason to live is different from doing something while living by sheer habit and self-preservation instinct.
Shogun · 2022-05-12 16:19
>>58883 >All a "purpose" has to do is be a narrative that (at least) keeps you alive. The first corollary to that would be that there's no purpose, no cause worth dying for. Would you agree with that? It may be that you wouldn't generalize that to everyone. For people with suicidal tendencies such a life-keeping purpose would be plenty good for starters. But more than a reason to be, it sound like a reason to not die. Or at least a personal narrative to such effect.
Boris Grishenko · 2022-05-13 22:43

John Titor · 2022-05-14 02:45
I think we look too hard for things to motivate us to do stuff. I don't really believe in such metaphysical things as for example a "purpose", perhaps I would be more focused if I did, but I would need evidence or some incentive that there was indeed one, among the multiple things I could do. So I choose to pick up whatever life throws at me, and make a "purpose" out or it. Give meaning to the circumstances I find myself in. It's not really clear whether I will sucdeed in my endeavours, or whether my efforts will lead me where I think they will. That is probably why, despite putting some effort in what my "heart" tells me is worth my time, my progress in many things is limited, and my effort is also limited to what's convenient at the time. So in a way I'm free of such artificial worries as a "purpose" but I'm also limited by lack of a definite, well, purpose.

not op, but need to vent about the same thing. by any measure my life is good, and yet i feel so unfulfilled with everything, im still lacking a purpose in life. its like everything i have interest in or am skilled at has already been "solved", i can never find the right people to connect with, im just completely lost. on the outside i give off the appearance of your average person, on the inside im just completely hollow and feel empty

>>59111 its the little things that make me feel whole, not hobbies or aspirations or whatever. i love life for the smell after a rainy day, birds chirping, the smell of baked bread. that kinda stuff. i basically just enjoy existing. it was pretty enlightening realizing that "life" or "meaning" was actually the things getting in the way of what I enjoy. i doubt this is something new to you, but its worth noting that we often look for things in the wrong place. the only thing i really want right now is that connection with other people. even if its just random people ill never see again, i want to find someone who doesnt take life so seriously

purpose is a concept invented by humanity to describe objects. the purpose of an axe is to chop tree, the purpose of a wheel is to make transportation easier. it was also useful to describe locations, like the place where you hide from the storm, or the place where you search for prey. eventually people started to use the concept to describe animals and other people in the tribe as well, e.g. you went to the shaman for a cure, you went to the miller to grind your grains, etc. it also became solidified in family structure, as roles like mom, dad, grandparents, developed and got closer to being optimal. how you map the various purposes assigned to you by thousands of individuals, groups, businesses, algorithms and finally yourself into a singular, unified purpose is pretty open-ended. it is heavily influenced by your various delusions of the present (ideology) and the future you're preparing for. any purpose you come up with will be a very lossy abstraction, comparable to 16kbps mp3 with lots of noise in the recording, and will never ring as true as you want it to be. if it does for a short while, the world will change and take that away from you, causing you to lament on lainchan.

was going to post this in /vent/ but its probably better here. I have a career opportunity which is pretty hard to fuarrrk up and thatll have me making easily over 100k out of college from an internship at a non big tech company. Feels super fuarrrking weird having my life mapped out in front of me. I like it and everything but I feel like I didn't work hard enough for it and it feels meaningless, especially the money aspect. Like sure I'll be super well off and everything but a career like that (especially in that field) is something most people grind and work for over the course of their lives. Its like ill miss such a big part of life that other people go through and use to give themselves purpose. I think itll feel very empty but at the same time I cant complain to anyone because its the type of stuff they dream of. I've never really had a purpose in my life and would only ever try to be at the top of whatever I was doing like school or video games then sort of move to something new. Now that I'm at the point where its almost meaningless to climb any further career wise I'm really at a loss, especially with how much time it takes. I like it but I imagine I'd hate anything I'm doing after I've learned enough and reached a certain status. I feel like im being compelled to fall into the consumerist lifestyle that I have not ever cared for previously. end of rant

>>59140 >over 100k out of college >super well off >only ever tried to be at the top but now I've reached it so what now fam, fam. 100k ain't a lot of money. I mean its enough to live off and all and it ain't poor but its not a lot of money, its far from the top of your field, laugably so. I know people who never even went to college who made more than that at their first programming jobs. And oi, aren't we gonna get some grandkids around here someday. >>59142 >>59143 100k is quite a bit straight out of college but I’d likely be making significantly more after a couple years. Actually it’s surprise me if I wasn’t making around 150k to start and work up to 250k given the role. Its a government job so one of those places where work is slow but also interesting, very stable and where people go to retire, just hard to get in. But regardless my sentiment is the same I don’t care to put in a soykaf ton effort for a marginally better position. Don’t mean to get this thread off topic

>>59186 Is there any reason to believe that what you say does not apply to practically all religious practices? Not to mention organized religion has historically been a primary means for governments to control the masses. Doing spiritual practice is becoming a blind man exploring the dense jungle surrounding one's shelter. Serpents and man alike will wish to convince you of angels in your presence, and to feel comfort in the belly of the beast. Perhaps it is best we are blind to it until we meet death.

>>59188 The whole topic is big confuse to be honest, but I'll try... >Maybe so maybe so, but correct religion is a map. The thing is, based of my own experience and the experience of others, is that the territory can change dramatically based off of the map. Yet, it's not hard to run into experience, affects, and information that seemingly contradicts a conclusion that the events are psychological in origin as well as affect. Personally, I am of the opinion that a very large amount of reported experiences are genuine phenomenon. The contradictions they present can be swept under the rug if we were to take the majority of experience reports as false, or conveniently ignore the ones that do not fit our bias, but if not it seems our map and territory work to conform with one another. NDEs, alien abductions, paranormal sightings, spirit communication, and so on all have that pre-existing influence imbued in them, though not rarely bring something unique. >Can't really have dozens of mutually compatible religions can we ehh, that would really just be one big religion, if its a religion at all. I think it'd be great if there was an effort to simply identify and reproduce phenomenon in a scientific process without an attempt to explain the phenomenon beyond what made it happen. The issue is, blinding people in such experiments and the veracity of self-reports, is something that has to be overcome since phenomenon rarely leaves definitive evidence -- something such a process would have to minimize yet accept as imminent. Most importantly such a meta-theocratic exploration would have to minimize its own introduction of a map, whether it be materialist, spiritual, or whatever, in validating the matter of phenomenon as it can ensnare observations as exclusive or a part of a scope unfalsifiable. Particularly with materialism, much of the sciences seem stubborn on defining an arbitrary goal line of what a source of phenomenon is (it's a chemical reaction or the activation of a brain region!). An approach of a western or eastern mystic, scientist, or agnostic should then be able to find commonalities in results despite method or definition. If we are able to understand well how phenomenon can be manifested, and which ways it can be manifested, then such a process can move on to specifics, such as how the map influences the territory, or to find definitions for phenomenon more exact. It's a shame that so much of the MK project files were destroyed (or are doomed to forever be concealed), as that research would probably be an invaluable jumpstart in understanding this all, not to mention how wildly unethical to repeat said experiments would likely be.
